Just knowing that it's from Radius helps a lot.

You probably have one of the video-input cards there, something like the
Targa TrueVision (I think that's the name). That DB-15 is probably for a
breakout box, like the VideoVision uses, and without it, the card won't be
too useful, IIRC.

If you have any way to get me photos of the card off-list, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Absolute beginner: Centris 610

2002-04-06 Thread Damond Walker

I also got a 610 about a week ago (complete with manuals, a real 68040,
monitor adapter, keyboard, etc). It's a nice little machine that I had
hoped to install NetBSD -- to be honest with you all it'll probably just
stick to MacOS into the distant future. It came with Word and Excel
installed (Word is v6 -- loads in about 8 to 10 seconds -- not bad for an
ancient 20mhz machine).

Anyway, I'm looking around the net for software to install on this machine
(which runs system 8). The problem is is that when I burn a CD at the
office (PC stuff) and bring it home the Mac treats the contents of the CD as
text files instead of the binary files they are.

Short of hooking all my network stuff up again what's the easiest way to
transfer software? If you copy of Mac binary from a PC created CD/RW how do
you tell the Mac that the file in question is actually a binary (executable)
file instead of a text file?

I'm a MacOS newbie if you havn't already guessed.

You won't be able to burn applications on a PC without a burning program
that can burn HFS filesystems (someone already mentioned Nero, it's what I
use and it's great), but if they're stuffed archives or the like all you
have to do is drag and drop it onto StuffIt's icon and it should unstuff
whether it's technically recognized or not.

MacOS for Performa 475

2002-04-06 Thread Michael Robin Zuhlke

I am running MacOS 7.5.5 on my Performa 475 right now. What is the
highest MacOS version I can run, and do I need a special 68k version of
this MacOS, or does the install CD come with both the 68k and PPC
version? Also, I don't want to spend a lot for whatever this MacOS
version is, so does anyone have one to sell?

Lately I see this question pop up, and yes a lower version of OS might be
faster but you have to remember what software is available for 7.1, not a
lot. Not to say that 8.1 which can run on a 475 will be as fast as 7.1 or
7.5.3 or whatever but take in mind what you will be using it for and check
to see what app's you are not going to be able to use using such a lower
version of OS.

Good luck getting any decent support for even current browsers. Netscape
doesn't really have the staff for general support (a friend of mine tried,
didn't work), and Microsoft has better things to do with their time than
answer IE questions. From what I've seen, you have to pay their per

Anyway, people have us to ask ;)

Hi James,

I'm using 7.6.1 with NN 4.08 in a 605 with 36MB, but one site
in particular, PowerMax in Oregon, loaded way faster with NN Gold 3
that I used to use.

Point for your side:

unstuffed it, but to my surprise up came instructional dialogue
from the God of Quad re. you need 7.6.1 (for the GX Graphics element I
think it was) - anyway I promptly installed update 7.6.1 and all was well.

I was using 7.6 in the 605 at the time (this winter)
That's the only time I've ever been

I personally like all the features of 7.6.1;
mostly the Extensions Manager, but lots more.

I personally drive an '86 Trans Am. It's old, but takes less power (money)
to own, it's a lot simpler to work on than newer cars (overall complexity),
it still works with a lot of newer stuff, plus it's just as fun to drive.

Warning - was MacOS for Performa 475

2002-04-06 Thread vincenzo

Greetings to all

Interesting discussion on an appropriate OS for a 475. I seem to recall
watching this conversation not so long ago.

I don't mind this thread continuing but the next person to suggest people
are talking out of an orifice that is not their mouth or any other such
nastiness will find themselves with the ability to receive incoming Qlist
mail but will not be able to post.

Please think before you post or send it privately.

Thanks and cheers to all
