IIRC, it's the old-style, but EveryMac has specs for sure...

Quadra 605 audio input

2002-05-29 Thread Bob Crowell

Does the Quadra 605 require a PlainTalk microphone, or will one of the
Mac Classic-style round mikes work with it?

Bob,

I recommend that you get a heat sink.
I bought a ful 040 chip on Ebay and it came with a heat sink.

My 8100 service manual, which I've had occasion to refer to recently, due to
a power supply problem, lists both the 661-1687 & the 661-0232 as possible
#s of the power supply for the 8100. Same input/output specs.

There is no indication that a specific 1 is required for a specific model of
the 8100 (I can't figure out which 1 I have from the label -- it says
MagneTek (Made in Italy), & the only Apple code that I can see reads
APPLE200 11394), i.e. whether the 8100/80 takes 1 # & the /100 or /110 takes
the other #.

So I would guess that they're all also interchangeable within the 800 & 840,
(or at least the 661-1687) AFAIK.

Hmm, I usually don't notice a difference in speed between iCab and
others but just for the sake of this discussion, I loaded that page on
my G4; it took about one second in OmniWeb and three seconds in iCab. :-)

It does seem that iCab is faster for some things and slower for others.
I really can't put my finger on what makes a difference from one page to
the next, however.

3 seconds in iCab on OS X on a G4.

I'll test the Centris 650 next time I'm over there.

I obsess over 605's - and from experience, a full 040 in one
does run a little warmer, but they work fine without a
heatsink - a 605 overclocked to 33Mhz with a full 040 however,
does generate an uncomfortable amount... as in the 040 burns
fingers :). That's when I put a heatsink on mine. The socket in
605's does have the clips on the side which allow a heatsink to
fit, if you'd feel more comfortable with one

Well done, another man entering the world of the 'feets mac' Micro
Quadra. They are lovely little machines and, as a LC officio it's the
one machine I want to get my hands on.

If it's running at 25MHz it should be OK. The fan in the base of the
605 draws air through the top-back of the case (look for the slots in
the lid at the back ,they are usually full of dust :) ) off the logic
board all the time when the lid is shut so it keeps it cool. The
reason the huge towers have heat sinks is because large volume of the
case means the air flow is not as good, mind you the fan in my 840av
is pretty huge!

Re: Prototype 840AV?

2002-05-29 Thread JoeyRn

The motherboard has all the same connectors as the 840AV,will have to look at the
processor to see the speed (I'm at work now). Just eyeballing the boards, they look
identical. The back panel of the case was cut out to allow access to all connectors.

I don't have an 040 connected anymore, so I tested with my G3 300 and
single ISDN. Navigator 4.08 (still my preferred browser) took 44 secs, iCab
69 secs.

I recently set up a 630 for a friend, for internet usage, and because of
the many praises for iCab around here, and because there's a danish
version, I tried it out, only to find it so slow that I found it unusable.

iCab performance

2002-05-29 Thread Jim Scott

I have been unable to solve my iCab performance problems. I think the
problem started with version 2.7. (Unless the problem existed before
that and I just didn't notice.)

My web pages usually have about 6 360x480 photographs. I have an ADSL
connection and Navigator 4.08 will display a page in about 45
seconds. iCab finishes downloading the files in about the same time
according to the bullet in the title bar. However, iCab then takes 9
minutes to render the images completely.

Have a look at
as an example. This page takes 45 seconds to render in Navigator. Can
anyone do better with iCab?
