You must have the PPC Upgrade control panel installed first, and set for
PPC mode OFF.

Then, you unstall the PPC Upgrade card and set the PPC mode ON.

Then, you MUST power off the machine.

Finally, when you power ON the machine, it will be in PPC mode.

To revert to 68K mode, reverse the procedure.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-01 Thread Rob
To be honest, I really don't remember, since it wasn't very important at the
time. I was quite happy to continue running OS 8.1 on this machine, but I
have thought recently that running 7.5 or 7.6 might be a little better from
a performance standpoint. Too many other Mac (and non-PC) projects on the go
right now, but sometime in the near future I will look at it again...

You probably have to do a full install of the OS with the card in place,
although there's a chance you might have damaged the card moving it over. Does
it still work in the 610?

Why not use iCab? It's far better than anything else on the Classic Mac OS.
Netscape 4 is such a horrid excuse for a browser that it should be banned from
the Internet.

Help PDS Upgrade -Newbie to list and Macs

2003-01-01 Thread Frank Kannemann
Hi,

I have two machines and was trying to make one uber machine ;-)

>From everything I could find on the net it should work

I took a PowerPC PDS card out of a Quadra 610.Which meant taking it out
of the adapter and installed it into a Quadra 650.

The 610 worked fine using MacOS 8.1 with and without the PDS card ;-)

The 650 didn't seem to want to acknowledge the card was there. I did
install the PowerPC control panel switch it on did the vulcan mind
cleansing control-p-r and rebooted it..

The 650 also has MacOS 8.1 on it..

It seems with card is an Apple original and doesn't have a frequency
switch/jumper on it like some of the 3rd party ones...

So a copy of questions:

1) Should it work?

2) any diagnostic software that might help I think daystar had some?

3) What is latest version of MacOS can I run on it? 8.6?

The 610 only has 20MBs in it and the 650 has 72MBs that

The reason for doing this is to get a later version netscape MacOS 8.0
came with Navigator 3.0 but when I tried to install Netscape 4.78 or
Opera they complain about not having ppc...on the 650...

Anyway any thoughts or pointers would be appreciated...

Frank

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-01 Thread Rob
Thanks for the reply

I use Fusion Recorder now. It seems to be OK, I was just wondering if there
was something else available.

The last time I tried to reformat and partition the 4GB drive, the OS
complained that the drive itself was too large. On OS 8.1, there were no
problems. I'll have to try it again.

I've got a SpigotProAV. This indeed works with the older Quicktime versions
available, but the later versions (5-6?) complain about the lack of a CODEC
to view the file. On a machine with QT4 (I think), it wouldn't show the
video, but the audio was intact...

What are the best apps for digitizing video?

Fusion Recorder is a good one. I believe there is a download link at the

that fails, let me know and I'll send you the stuff.

I'm running 8.1 [...] The last time I tried to run an
older OS, it complained about my 4 GB SCSI drive, being

You can reformat your drive into smaller-sized partitions. This might be
a bit inconvenient for you right now, after you already have stuff set up
for your convenience on one 4GB partition.

Once I've got the video into the computer, are there any
good utilities to convert the video to a newer video
codec? Most newer apps (including QuickTime) don't want
to read the Spigot's Interlaced jpeg format.

What kind of Spigot card do you use? I have a SPRO (Spigot Pro AV) that
works fine from 7.1 through 8.1. It requires an extension to make it work
well with QuickTime.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I figured since it

full usable desktop (warm power-on because RAM tests take forever with 128MB

7.5 takes about two minutes with the same config minus AppleShare Server.

using an 840AV for VHs video editing

2003-01-01 Thread AylmerQuebec
Thanks for all the help. Until I can get all the software that I need per
your recommendations, I'll try with what's on there already.
At the moment it's Apple Video Player, which I'm guessing might be the
program that was installed to do editing. Unfortunately, when I try to run
it, I get an error message that it needs version 1.4.2 of the Video
Startup extension and that the computer have Video in hardware.
In the Extension manager, I have Video Startup 1.7.1. As far as hardware,
there's a card from Storm Technologies, with no serial numbers that I can
find, which I don't know the use. If I remove it, the computer works just
as fine.
Any guess as to whether this board has anything to do with Video and what I
can do about the extension 1.7.1 or 1.4.2 ?

Thanks

Jean Marc

There is one guy who does shareware programs for HAM radio operators that
might have what you want.

This from the INFO-MAC Digest list
Info-mac is a large group of mirrored FTP servers around the workd that have

Abstract:

Elmer creates sample tests to help you prepare for your ham radio written

Elmer will grade your sample test, showing you which questions were
answered incorrectly. It will also indicate if you passed the exam. Elmer

In Anarchie or Interarchy [the current version name] you just copy the part
that starts with / and include up to the ; for example
/info-mac/app/elmer-400.hqx and paste it into the FTP download window in
Anarchie and Anarchie will use the info-mac server that you have set in

One can use most any of the FTP programs like Fetch, etc. also, If you need

I don't know if Elmer 4.0.0 works on 68k Macs or not and I am not sure that
you will find what you are looking for in a 68k Mac version, but Chris
Smolinski does do the kind of shareware that you might want.

Re: Using an *40 AV to edit VHS video

2003-01-01 Thread Rob
I've got an 840av with a Video Spigot AV. I'm running 8.1, but I have
problems reliably getting the video to come out of the Spigot's outputs. It
seems to change depending on what app I'm using, then needs a reboot to make
it work properly again. Would changing to 7.5.5 help this?

The last time I tried to run an older OS, it complained about my 4 GB SCSI
drive, being too large. Is there an easy way around this?

What are the best apps for digitizing video? I only have a couple that work
with the Spigot. I've been trying to use Premiere 4, but it seems to give me
the most grief with Spigot output. Any suggestions?

Once I've got the video into the computer, are there any good utilities to
convert the video to a newer video codec? Most newer apps (including
Quicktime) don't want to read the Spigot's Interlaced jpeg format.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I figured since it was already being
discussed...

Thanks,
Rob
