Re: [q] botting macos 8.1 cd on a quadra 660av

2004-08-29 Thread Brett Forrester
i cannot boot the cd on my quadra 660av it is rather bothersome due
to the fact i need os 8.1. i cannot boot into macos 7.6.1 and just
install
As was mentioned in a related set of e-mails today about booting a
575 from an OS 8.0 CD, try booting your 660AV normally from its own
hard drive, and then insert the 8.1 CD. Follow this by accessing your
"Startup Disk" control panel and selecting the OS 8.1 CD. Now when
you restart, the OS 8.1 CD should take over and provide you an
installation option. Good luck and keep us informed.

Hi,
I have the white CD marked 1997. I bought it retail
probably in early 1998. I have used it to start up a
quadra 840av and a quadra 800.
My method for starting a computer with a CD is to
first start up from the hard drive. Then put the OS CD
in and choose it from the startup disk control panel.
Then I hit restart. I seem to remember having a
problem starting from the disk by holding down the C
key. I'm not sure though.

Try booting from CD by holding [Shift, Option, Command and Delete] keys held
down at same time as computer starts up with CD in drive, this should force
booting from the CD [or any external drive with a suitable OS] and by-passes
the startup hard drive.

I have a Mac OS 8.0 and a 8.1 CD, on both the code numbers begin with the
letter Z tho' they both follow the same x-xxxA scheme. I don't live in
the US, so the numbering may be different because of that.

Re: [q] Printing to USB printers via LPD/desktop printing?

2004-08-29 Thread Andrew W. Hill
Here's the quadlist part: I'll be printing from my LC-580, so my limit is
Mac OS 8.1. I know the Brother won't be a big deal cause it has LJ4
emulation, but what of the Stylus C84? The problem there is that the C84's
drivers only work with 8.6 or above. I guess what I was hoping for was that
I can just install the drivers on my iBook, copy the PPD from the iBook to
the LC-580, and set it up via LPD. Will this plan of action work?
I didn't think the Stylus C84 was a postscript printer. In any case,
PPDs aren't really important. You ought to try copying the driver
suite over, but I wouldn't be hopeful.

Re: [q] Quad 700 users, can two or more quads be yoked together?

2004-08-29 Thread Andrew W. Hill
It's been a couple years, but I remember downloading and playing
with something that purported to be a 68k multiprocessing setup. It
had a strange name like Hen and Chicks or some such... I'll have to
go dig up my Powerbook I was playing with it on and see if it's
still on there. The main problem is it'd require anything using it
to be recompiled with its libraries, and as far as I could find at
the time there hadn't been anything done. I've done a fair bit of
googling without turning it up, no idea if I'm remembing the name at
all right :)
The apps used to be called something cutesy, but have been merged
into a single app called "Pooch". Limit of four machines without
paying for it. I wanted to run 15 LCs together with it, but no go.

Re: [q] Dewad Clock Battery

2004-08-29 Thread Andrew W. Hill
How does one replace the Clock Batteries in a LC 580 and a Quadra
700 as well as a LC II
The LC580 takes a different battery than the Q700 and LCII.
580
Pull motherboard out the back. Locate the battery, probably a
rayovac on the board. It's a cube like thing, an inch on the longest
side (so not quite a cube). It connects with a wire then its
velcroed to the board.

Q700 & LCII
Take the top off the case. I forget where the Q700's is, but the
LCII's ought to be smack bang in the middle. It's half the length of
a AA battery, but otherwise the same shape. It'll be in a little
black holder thing.

This op is crazy easy. If you need real time advice hit up offlist
for IM or something

Re: [q] Help Identify OS 8.0 CD

2004-08-29 Thread Stephen Alexander
Not for resale means it was shipped with a mac most likely. The CD may be
model-specific. Quadlist archives reveal a similar query and response from a
couple years back:

http://www.mail-archive.com/quadlist%40mail.maclaunch.com/msg03234.html

I got a hit on U97073-052A which appears to be an expired page selling a full
retail version of OS 8.

That's all I've got, sorry
