Well, it still loses time while it simply idles as well . . . just not as
much as when it's actually doing stuff. I think I was losing like 30
minutes to an hour's worth of time every day.

There is a problem with NetBSD and OpenBSD where time is lost depending
on how much work the processor is doing (the more work it does, the more
time lost). I didn't know this was a problem with Linux too, but
apparently it is.

There's no real solution to this problem. I worked around it by having
my Quadra 700 poll my Linux box's time server (which is x86) every 5
minutes. This keeps the time and date pretty much up to date. If you
don't have a box on your network you could setup as a time server, you
can always use a public one.

Quaddoubler Problem

2002-06-26 Thread Haroon

Anyone on the list have experience with Quaddoublers? I have a Quadra
700 I leave on for months at a time as an OpenBSD box doing some minor
tasks, and I noticed when it's given very intense tasks (like for
instance, today when I was compiling OpenSSH), it tends to have
stability issues.

I believe there's an overheating problem with the processor, since after
a crash in OpenBSD (while the processor is still very hot) the system
becomes incredibly unstable in OS 7.6. If I power it off for a few
minutes, or just let it sit idle, things return back to normal. Also,
if I return the original 25mhz CPU things are okay again.

I noticed the Quaddoubler pictured on Sonnet's web site does not have a
fan, but a heatsink. For some reason my Quaddoubler has a fan attached,
which doesn't seem to be cooling it effectively. Anyone think replacing
the fan on the Quaddoubler with the original Quadra heatsink would yield
better results?

It's very rare that I work this system hard, so it's generally not an
issue; would still be nice to fix it though.

I started experimenting with 68k Macs a few months ago (why I subscribed

except with apps and a real UNIX underneath. I don't want to have to
deal with x86 again except for cheap servers.

AU/X

2002-06-02 Thread Haroon

I'm bored on a Sunday before my summer classes will begin and feel like
installing AU/X on an old Performa.

Anyone have a working FTP I could get it from? I tried the one that was
posted here a few weeks ago but it's not functioning. Also checked out
the AU/X newsgroup but most of the links were dead.

This was actually a feature of the Net+ browser in BeOS. Probably could
be imitated easily enough if you have a cache like Squid running.

The death of Be is a major reason I finally gave up on x86 and moved to Mac.

Although you've probably already done this, one thing you might want to make
sure of is that the processor is inserted as tightly as possible into the

A while ago when I was considering installing AU/X I found a huge list of
all the bugs in it, and a run down of how to fix them -- but I can't seem to
find it.

If you can figure out what exactly might have possible bugs in it, I suppose
you could attempt recompiling those specific parts. The question is, will
it compile correctly on such an old platform? You might have some luck
using gcc for AU/X, but I don't know if it's really worth the time.

I have a Performa 600 laying around; maybe I'll try AU/X on it over break.
But as far as being secure right out of the box, OpenBSD has never had an
exploit yet.

SA Technologies has really great prices. I ordered some SIMMs for my Quadra

I Wouldn't run AU/X on anything that was going to be doing mission critical
stuff, or available to the outside world. Probably has tons of exploits

Am I the only person who uses OpenBSD instead of NetBSD?

If he's adventurous enough he could install Debian or BSD on it, and use

OpenBSD has a cdrecord package, or you could compile it yourself. Pretty

Re: Fixing Monitor Cable

Is there a place on-line that I could find information about the pin layout
on this monitor? I can probably do the necessary soldering.

Also, is there any place I could just get another monitor cable? I didn't

Yep but it aint gonna be easy! You need to repair the cable.
However in order to do this as a quick hack you would need to know where
thje breaks are
(they are probably at the bit of the cable you need to bend and likely in
the same place, which
was probably once trapped behind a desk or something such)
alternatively, it is better to replace the entire monitor lead.
And further more the best option (in my view) is to remove the cable and put
a socket on the
monitor and use a seperate lead, which can be thrown away and replaced when
needed.
if only all monitors came like this in the first place! Damn some cost
saving measures.

However to do any of these requires you to be fairly competant with a
soldering iron and
in some cases more!

Fixing Monitor Cable

My friend just gave me an Apple Multiple Scan 15 display tonight, but the

Maxxing out a Q700

2002-04-03 Thread Haroon

I'd like to take my Q700 as far as I can without moving over to PPC, but I'm
curious about what else I could do to it.

I have a Quaddoubler on the way and 68mb of ram (picking it up from UPS in a
couple hours). I'll probably max out the vram just for the hell of it, even
though it only runs OpenBSD in console mode.

How about adding an L2 cache? Would BSD recognize, or utilize it? Since a
Quaddoubler would already be installed would that mean I'd have to use a PDS
slot cache? Would it play well with the Quaddoubler?

Any suggestions for souping up this machine are welcome.

Bad idea -- I don't think A/UX has been touched since maybe '92 or so? It's

Mklinux is PPC only, and pretty outdated at that. Debian 68k, OpenBSD m68k,
or NetBSD would work well though. Samba is a good option, and if you
install Dave on your Mac's running OS 7 or 8 then you can browse the shares
from there. I don't know whether PC's or Macs running OS 7 or 8 can
understand NFS, but if so then that would be another option. Overall
though, Samaba seems like it would be a good choice for you (and I know for
a fact there are OpenBSD m68k packages available for it).

Although one person suggested it would be easier to just run MacOS on it,
you can probably get more speed out of a stripped down BSD or Linux
installation. OpenBSD comes out of the box with most uneeded services
disabled; the only thing you might want to take out manually is Sendmail.
SSH runs by default but you'll probably want to access your box remotely
accross the network. If you really want to go for bare minimals I think you
can boot it without a keyboard or monitor attached (by just sticking a Mac >
VGA adpater in the monitor port, or shorting it by some other method),
though I never tried.

Anyway, for some reason I enjoy playing with Linux/BSD on these older
machines much more than newer ones.

Quaddoubler

2002-03-26 Thread Haroon

Just closed a deal on one of these used. Anyone had experience with them?
Do they generally perform well? I'll be using it on a machine that's
running OpenBSD 3.0.

Also, I ordered some memory from SA Tech, but they didn't include the
shipping costs in the totals. Do they just add it on later? Send it
postage due?

I was just looking at the picture; that stick looks a /little/ too big. Are
you sure it would fit in the 700?

Memory for Quadra 700

2002-03-24 Thread Haroon Al-Qahtani

Anyone know where I could find (new or used) 16mb sticks for a Quadra? I
want to boost it up to 68mb. Crucial.com only had 4mb simms, and
Macsolutions told me I needed 72-pin simms even though the Quadra only takes
30 pin simms. Is there any difference between the 30-pinn simms this Mac
uses and ones PC's use? I don't really have an old 386/486 handy to
compare.

Also, is there any place I could find a Quaddoubler cheaper than what Sonnet
asks?

Quaddoubler and OpenBSD 3.0

2002-03-24 Thread Haroon Al-Qahtani

I'm thinking about buying a Quaddoubler for my Quadra 700. Does anyone know
if OpenBSD 3.0 m68k will support it properly? I'm guessing since it's a
complete CPU replacement it shouldn't be much of a problem, but I'm not
sure. Don't want to throw down $100 for nothing . . .

I've been reading this thread kind of in surprise.

Even though I've used PC's since maybe '85 or '86, when I started using a
Mac my initial response was "wow, I could probably give this to my mother
and she wouldn't break it." Really, there's a lot less trouble one can get
into experimenting on a Mac than on a Windows/DOS machine -- at least I
thought. This person has shot that theory down though :)
