Have a poke around http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/ it's a little hard to

the only thing with openbsd is they have no platform maintainer. also
the fact that it supports less hardware than netbsd or linux is another
issue on mac68k at least. there is also a wider netbsd/mac68k userbase
and therefore more incentive to fix problems with it. i ran
openbsd/mac68k and run netbsd/mac68k now. they are virtually identical
only netbsd is slightly faster due to cpu optimizations which are a real
must if you want to do anything productive on it like a web server or
email server.

My General experience with MacPPC is flip a coin for
BSD or Linux. Both have great support. I have run
OpenBSD and NetBSD--personal preference as to which
you choose. I prefer Open :-)
Linux on PPC is a simpler choice. The only acceptable
choices are gentoo and debian. And most people don't
like to wait for gentoo, so
But I would say avoid YDL like the plague. 2.3 and 3
were okay, but it felt too much like a half assed
attempt. PPC Debian/Gentoo feel like i386, Sparc64,
etc. Its just the same.
On Mac68k, I've run Open, Net, and Debian. And I
think those are your only choices. Again, my choice
is Open, but if you want that, you'll need one of the
most recent snap shots to run. There were some
strange problems in 3.5 and 3.6 release. They have
since been resolved. Personally, I ran a quadra800
with OpenBSD 3.3 as my firewall since 3.3 was released
right up until a month ago. Thats over 18 months.
Rebooted only when a new kernel was installed.

i know the guy who runs ziaspace.com. the url

netbsd/mac68k daily. it runs my email server. and
netbsd/macppc runs

but will be downgrading to my old Quadra 610 (which I have missed) here

I'm on a cable modem and I get great speed on my Quadra. Is is possible
to listen to online radio on my Quadra under OS 7.6?
Thanks,

A Quadra can be used under Mac OS for that purpose, as a router and
firewall. However, considering that there is a cost for buying the software
(like IPNetRouter) and the energy cost of keeping the Quadra turned on for
this purpose, and considering that a dedicated router/firewall device from
Linksys or Belkin costs about $50 these days (with very low power usage), it
does not make sense. Those small devices are designed just for this
purpose, so they are very easy to set up and use.
If that Quadra was also serving some other purpose (such as a data server or
web server), then it might (?) make sense.

There must be someone out there somewhere who has written a sure fire guide
to installing NetBSD, 1.6 or higher, on a Quadra 700.I've tried now

Now, does someone have a recommendation on what browser is best to use with
System 7.5 on a Quadra 700?

I also need a place to download it from.
Now, since I have built in ethernet, or at least an ethernet aaui that i can
transform to ethernet, I should be able to install NetBSD directly with my
high speed connection.

But, if it is not brain dead simple on how to do all this, please let me

copy a minimial install to a zip disk and such. you can just basically copy
the system folder as well that would work.

Re: [q] translation needed

2004-08-24 Thread setient
the main problem with a/ux is that it is no longer patched. when you run a unix
machine connected to a network you need to be current. you can maybemake it current
with pkgsrc. netbsd or debian or openbsd are the only alternatives. however openbsd
does not like to compile itself so that is out.

Mainly only good for cli, I've run kde but its way to slow. Netbsd is not
much better or worse. Some of the light wieght desktop managers are said to
work well, if a little slow.

If you already have a nix box of some sort you could try a vnc client on the
mac or Exodus which is rather excellent, even better if you know how to
configure your firewall properly. :)
When configured you can run nix programs at good speed on your quadra which
is fun. Win4Lin runs well in a window, sometime I'll try Sheepshaver, OS9 on
a unaccellerated quad, in a window. :)
