Re: DSL on Your Quadra/LEM

Firstly when swapping the modem from one machine to the other always unplug the power to the modem so it can read the new MAC address from the different ethernet card otherwise you'll have no luck regardless. Secondly, if your connection requires a ip supplied machine name and uses dhcp then you may get by either naming the mac as the suppied machine name in the filesharing CP and using the last address as a static address in open transports TP/IP CP. The other solution would be to get a mac that does 8.6 which uses OT2.0.x which fixes the dhcp problem, hardly a fix for a unaccelerated quadra. Is TCP/IP installed and does it work for modem or other internet connection? Not trying to lead anyone down the wrong path being this is the Quadlist, but the truth of the matter is I haven't tried hooking up to the 476. I own an eMac, a 7100 and a 476. Eventually, I'd like to have all them sharing the DSL so I know I'll need a router. Needless to say the modem works on the eMac. I moved the modem from one machine to the other just to see if I could get a connection. Just to let you know, I base a lot of my reasoning on the archives at LEM, therefore the 7100 has OS 8.5.1, any reason other than OT 2.0.x to upgrade to 8.6? Tell me to jump and I'll jump. ;-) As for the 476, it's open game with OS 7.5.3 (nothing else) and when time permits OS 7.5.5 unless someone says otherwise. Well, IIRC someone already recommended OS 7.6.1. As for the ethernet port, is there any way to test it? All I know is that the green light on the back comes on. I tried doing the ethertalk between the 7100 and the 476 but I don't think I configured it correctly since I couldn't connect to each other. I see a version of TCP/IP on there. I'm open to suggestions. tia -stew -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... DSL/Cable on Your Quadra
Aloha List, Anyone here using a high speed connection with your Quadra? I tried copying the IP, subnet, router settings from my other computer but can't seem to connect. I don't know what else I need to do. Can someone give me a run down of what needs to be done and perhaps what kind of software may be required to do this. tia -stew -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... CD-RW Media was Re: Me again

I've been beating myself up for the last couple of weeks with this whenever I find time to play with the computers. I was using the "fast" computer with the "fast" connection to download some software. Burned them to a CD-RW, ran over to the 7100 and what the??? I thought it was a HFS/HFS+ issue and tried messing around with the preferences. Every time I burn the disk, and I go to "get info" it would say "MAC OS extended." Right about the time you posted this reply, I remembered that I had a CD-R disk with some software which worked fine with the 7100. Checked out the format and it was "MAC OS extended." Well, hell must be the media!! BTW yes, I've confirmed that. -stew -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Re: Upgrade LC475
Some of the articles are somewhat dated so it's great to be on a list with real people with real experiences. I'd start here: http://lowendmac.com/performa.shtml and check out the link that's model specific to you. As far as what I've done, I've swapped out the 25 MHz 68LC040 for a 25 MHz 68040, added a PDS Ethernet card and if you read my previous post, I've had success with a 4.2 GB HD as well as a 9.0 GB HD. I've always wanted to max out the RAM but have been uncertain as to what max is. 32 Mb per Apple specs but as one list member has reported, on this very list, has used more. When I maxed out my 7100, I took out 2 x 8Mb and 2 x 16 Mb. One of the 16 Mb RAM is in the 476 until I decide I want/need more. BTW All items were purchased through internet auctions. -stew On Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at 03:40 AM, Joseph & Michelle wrote: How far would I be able to upgrade an LC475? Currently it has 8Mb of RAM, and a 250Mb Hard Drive. Is there a limit on how high I can go with either of those? As well, a short time back I was asking about PDS Ethernet cards for said pair of LC475s. I never got around to actually getting any of them, because there were still a couple of other parts that I needed first. -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Re: Intro and Hard drive Size for Performa 476
On Saturday, November 22, 2003, at 01:10 PM, Stew wrote: Aloha Everyone, I've been using MACs for about a decade and fortunately for me, I haven't had the need to go into the case or mess around with software much. Basically, I'm saying I'm a novice with this computer. I just joined this list in the hopes of reviving an old Performa 476. The hard drive died about 6 years ago and instead of fixing it, I replaced the 476 with a 7100 reusing the keyboard, monitor and whatever else was hooked up to it. The 7100s HD is near it's capacity so I've acquired a 50 pin 9 GB HD. This works fine in the 7100 and my plan was to use the 7100s old 1.2 GB HD in the 476. This should all work fine but I was thinking that I should just keep that HD the way it is for a back up. Searching for another HD for the 476 revealed that there are some 50 pin 18 GB HDs out there, so being caught up with "more is better," I was thinking of grabbing a 18 GB HD for the 7100 and using the 9 GB HD in the 476. Of course I can't seem to get the 476 to recognize the 9 GB HD drive. Any ideas??? BTW After picking up the neighbors curbside trash, I've got just about everything (keyboard/monitor) I need to bring the 476 back to life with the exception of the current problem. -stew Responding to my own question and if anyone wants to know... turns out to be a termination problem. What's weird is that I was able to plug the 9 GB HD into the 7100 taking advantage of it's CD-rom to load software but when switching it over to the Performa, it wouldn't even recognize it. Even with a boot disk, it wouldn't show up on the desktop. Changing termination to ID 0, now it boots up just fine in the Performa. It's too bad that after numerous web searches that amounted to nothing, I've settled for a smaller 4.2 GB HD for the Performa, but for all intents and purposes, I think it'll be more than adequate. thanx for listening. -stew -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
