With out writing to much there are several things you may require to do for cable.
Firstly when swapping the modem from one machine to the other always unplug the
power to the modem so it can read the new MAC address from the different
ethernet card otherwise you'll have no luck regardless.
Secondly, if your connection requires a ip supplied machine name and uses dhcp
then you may get by either naming the mac as the suppied machine name in the
filesharing CP and using the last address as a static address in open transports
TP/IP CP. The other solution would be to get a mac that does 8.6 which uses
OT2.0.x which fixes the dhcp problem, hardly a fix for a unaccelerated quadra.

First things first: what system (Mac OS) is on the Quadra? Do you have a
working ethernet port? Is TCP/IP installed and does it work for modem or
other internet connection?

Not trying to lead anyone down the wrong path being this is the Quadlist, but the truth of the matter is I haven't tried hooking up to the 476. I own an eMac, a 7100 and a 476. Eventually, I'd like to have all them sharing the DSL so I know I'll need a router. Needless to say the modem works on the eMac. I moved the modem from one machine to the other just to see if I could get a connection. Just to let you know, I base a lot of my reasoning on the archives at LEM, therefore the 7100 has OS 8.5.1, any reason other than OT 2.0.x to upgrade to 8.6? Tell me to jump and I'll jump. ;-)

As for the 476, it's open game with OS 7.5.3 (nothing else) and when time permits OS 7.5.5 unless someone says otherwise. Well, IIRC someone already recommended OS 7.6.1. As for the ethernet port, is there any way to test it? All I know is that the green light on the back comes on. I tried doing the ethertalk between the 7100 and the 476 but I don't think I configured it correctly since I couldn't connect to each other. I see a version of TCP/IP on there. I'm open to suggestions. tia -stew
