You mentioned earlier that you just need some way to get your NEC 3x
cdrom drive to work.

You need the NEC 3x drivers. You don't have these?

I have an external 3x NEC CD ROM and this works fine on 8.1 and with
the NEC drivers installed onto a boot floppy, so I am able to
reinstall or update (or downdate) software from CD ROM in this way.

Re: 8.1 boot floppy - how?

2003-01-28 Thread Todd Felmly
I don't need an 8.0 boot floppy - I have OS 8 on CD and have created the
floppy. I just need some way to get my NEC 3xp cdrom drive to work in
8.0. The cd-sunrise extension detects the drive when booting with the
floppy, it just can't read the OS 8.0 disc.

I guess my question should be - why can't I read the OS 8.0 cd when I
use the 8.0 boot floppy? The system says it can't read it and it needs
to be initialized.

Ah, you didn't tell us you had it on the floppy :)

Try booting from the HD after disabling any CD-ROM-related stuff *except* CD
Sunrise (i.e., replicate the boot floppy's CD-ROM driver config) and see if
that works.

OK, this is what I did:

I booted from the HD into 8.1. With Extension manager, I turned off
EVERYTHIHNG (control panels, extensions, etc.) _except_ for the
cd-sunrise extension. I rebooted the computer and the only thing loaded
was that single extension. When I put my OS 8.0 cd into the drive, it
came right up.

Sooo it appears that this single extension is the only thing needed in
at least 8.1. Is there something different between 8.0 and 8.1 and how
it handles CD's?

Also, my system is 8.1. Why can't I just create a boot floppy with files
from this system?

Must be. At least that's what the information you've presented tells me.

The 8.x boot floppies are special stripped-down System/Finder combos that do
little else besides boot and allow the launching of an installer. They're made
with a special Disk Copy script on the CD, and you probably need an 8.1 CD in
order to make an 8.1 boot floppy.

I aquired an old Quadra 700 (68040 machine) pre-installed with OS 8.1. The
computer came with an NEC external scsi cd-rom drive. Well since it is not
an Apple model I can't boot from it with the 'c' key. The drive uses the
cd-sunrise extension and works fine in 8.1.

Maybe the easy way out:

Suggest you pick up an old Apple CDROM. They're pretty cheap. I found an
Apple 600i 4x SCSI CDROM, $10 shipped, on the LEM Swap List.
Sure solved my non-Apple headaches.

I think I can answer this... Disk tools (PPC) disk will boot any system
supporting OS 8.1. Remove the two programs on the disk and install the CD
Extension into the system folder on the disk.

Can download this as an image at apples site, here:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Eng
lish-North_American/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.1_Update/Disk_Tools_PPC.img.bi
n

You can make a disk using Disk Copy from the image linked above.

Hope that helps, JeffL

Subject: 8.1 boot floppy - how?

OK, please no flames as I am new to the Mac world.

My question is: If something were to ever happen to the disk and I needed to
reinstall the OS, how would I do it?

I have all 19 parts of the 7.5.3 I downloaded from Apple and if I create a
boot floppy with that and include the cd-sunrise extension, I can't read the
OS 8.0 cd-rom. The OS wants to initialize the cd! Same thing happens if I
create a boot disk from the 8.0 cd. The extension loads for the cdrom drive
but I can't read the 8.0 CD, it wants to erase the CD. The drive and OS 8 cd
works just fine while booted in 8.1.

Please explain!
