My 630CD has three RCA jacks and a DIN-8 (S-video?) port above the serial

Sounds like you have the Apple Video System - if you had the coax jack it
would be the Apple TV/Video System and if you had two coax jacks it would
be the Apple TV/FM/Video System.

What the RCA and S-Video jacks you have are good for is connecting a
camcorder or VCR or video game or whatever and displaying it's video on your
Mac's screen, capture QuickTime Movies or Still images, etc. I have a
similar if not identical card in my 6400 that I use with an old camcorder
and video conferencing software.

OTOH - you could have a video-output system installed, for displaying your
Mac's video on a TV or recording to a VCR or whatever, but the video-in
system seems to be much more popular and common.

Hopefully someone here on the list will chime in with a way to tell if your
RCA and S-Video jacks are for output or input.

Performa or Something Else?

2002-10-04 Thread Mitchells

Hi. I'm new to the Quadlist (and still a computer rookie), so I hope these
aren't really dumb questions.
I've already reviewed the FAQs and didn't find answers (but may have
overlooked something).

Awhile back I bought a Performa 630CD system at a yard sale (computer,
monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables and some software). It worked
intermittently for several weeks, but soon died. The computer repairman I
took it to said it needs a new main board.

I also have a collection of software (from a dead IIcx) I'd still like to
use - and a new copy of Microsoft Office 4.2.1 (purchased on eBay for the
Performa before it died).

Would you recommend that I:
(a) Get a replacement main board for the Performa (and try to install it
myself)?
If so, where could I buy one?
(b) Get another Performa, because I can be sure it will be compatible with
all the other
  hardware from the yard sale?
If so, should I stay with a 630CD - or move up to something better?
(c) Get a newer/more powerful Mac?
If so, what's the newest, most powerful Mac and OS that would still
run the IIcx software and Office 4.2.1?
(d) Give up on all this and starting all over again with a PC?
If so, do you know of any yard sales this weekend?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanx!

First try replacing the pram battery.

If the board really is dead, look on eBay for a new one from a 63x, 62xx,
 6300, or 6320.

Re: Performa or Something Else?

2002-10-04 Thread Scott Holder

All Performas are not created equal. They're all a little different in a
lot of ways, so just buying another Performa wouldn't necessarily be
safe. As it turns out, the 630 is basically the same case as the
6200/6300 so it'll drop right in without a hassle.

The 630CD is already essentially a Quadra, it has a 68LC040 that could
be swapped with a 68040, making it a full Quadra. In fact, there is a
Quadra 630 that is the same machine, more or less.

The motherboard of the 630 is one of the easiest to get to.

Take off the back panel, and you'll see two screws on the sides and a
little handle. Undo the two screws, unclip the handle, and give it a

On the other hand it's an SOB getting into the rest of the case - like if
you want to clean the dust bunnies from the floppy drive or put in a bigger
hard drive. :-(

Definitely check the PRAM battery before you do anything else. If the
battery is a Tadiran (purple-pink with black markings) it will have a date
stamped on it. If the date is over about six years ago or if the battery
voltage is below about 2.8 volts, the battery should be replaced.

Suitable replacements can be found at RadioShack or Batteries Plus.

The battery is the largeish box stuck to the motherboard with velcro.

If there isn't one, where the square of velro is with a four-pin
connector near it (space for four pins, one will be missing) is where
the battery should be.

The best two places to get a motherboard would be eBay and the swap
list, though probably in reverse that order. Swap List is generally
preferred.

Hope this helps :)

The board you have is a 68040, you should see the chip on the board
rather prominently.

Yes, it would fit, as the 630 itself is a 68(LC)040 board. If you use
any software that wants/needs an FPU, it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

It should run all the software fine, at least, I can't think of any

A couple of observations, R.A.:

[...snip...]
Don't worry about a battery till you get
the machine to boot. Do you get a boot chime when you hit the button?

I'm not sure about the 630CD, but some Macs won't start up properly or
recognize and light up the display if the PRAM battery is shot. Can anyone
provide more details?

I agree with your comment about getting caught up in a good-money-after-bad
situation, but disagree with your evaluation of the worth of the 630CD.
In a purely dollars-and-cents market situation, you could be right, but for
a new computer user, the worth is in the ability to do basic word
processing, to send and receive email, and to browse the web. For this
purpose, the 630CD (loaded with OS 7.x, AppleWorks 5, Eudora, and Netscape)
is perfect and well worth several $25 upgrades (CPU, memory, comm slot
modem or ethernet board) to make it maximally performant within its design
specs. It's definitely less expensive than Dude, you're getting a Dull!

You can contact Olde Mac Milt through eBay or you can send email to him

I recommend that you look for some of his auctions on eBay and read the

save you both a lot of time. By the way, when he sent me some of the
upgrade parts for my 630CD he included detailed instructions for completely
disassembling the 630CD case. Really a super eBay dealer.

Whether or not you choose to swap out the CPU, you should definitely max
out the RAM. Adding RAM is the fastest, cheapest, and easiest way to boost
the performance of system. Check with olde-mac-milt and he will see to it
that you get the correct RAM stick for the 630CD (I know this because he
provided the CPU and RAM upgrades for MY 630CD).

Whether a program will work depends on the compatability of the particular
software with the System software. I doubt there would be any problems if
you use any Mac system from versions 7 through 9.

If you upgrade the Performa with a PowerMac motherboard, like the 6200 or
6300 series, you will need to make sure you have a system software
installer
compatible with those machines. If you don't already have it, System 7.5.3
 can be downloaded from Apple.

I would agree with the lister who recommended trying a new PRAM battery. A
bad battery can cause all kinds of funky symptoms in these Performas. If
you
decide to upgrade the motherboard, you'll probably need a new battery
 anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't spend much of anything trying to upgrade or salvage
that machine. PCI Macs, such as the 7500, are so cheap and so much
superior
to the Performa that there is no comparison. However, practically nothing
from the 630 could be used in a PCI Mac, so you'd be starting from
scratch.

If you decide to try a motherboard swap, you may be in luck. I just
upgraded
 a 6200 to a 6500, so now I have a useless 6200 motherboard. I'll sell it
for
$10 plus shipping. The 6360 motherboard is much superior to the 6200, but
the RAM would not be interchangeable, and they are much harder to find.

It's interesting that all the Performas from the 630 to the 6500 (which
wan't actually called a Performa) have the same motherboard configuration.
It makes me think that the 6500 motherboard might also work in the 630.
Has
anyone heard of this being done?

Re: Performa or Something Else?

2002-10-04 Thread Spiritus ex Machina

CPU - Central Processing Unit - Used for all general-purpose processing in
a system

FPU - Floating Point Unit - Used for special handling of floating-point
arithmetic instructions

Some CPUs have an FPU built in (e.g., 68040), some do not (e.g., 68LC040).
In the latter case, the floating-point computations must be emulated in
software (much slower) or a separate FPU must be provided in some fashion.
Some Mac mainboards have an FPU socket, some Mac add-on boards have an FPU
socket. Easiest is to use a CPU with a built-in FPU whenever possible.

Sp00ky

Scott:
Yes, the chips has 68LC040 in the middle of the other numbers.
But I'm not familiar with FPU (sorry).
If I wanted to upgrade, how would I do that? (That's probably in the FAQs,
right?)
Thanx,

I agree with your sentiment, but the particulars are a little off. Several
(3) 25 buck bumps would be enough to get a good 7600, which would be
drastically better than a 630 even if it were pretty spiffed. I get torqued
about the cost of the batteries. I *think* that the 630 will run with no
