[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Charging - or not!!

2018-07-12 Thread 'Martin Hodnett' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi Nigel. Mine is doing the same, only noticed it in the darker evening
and more pronounced with the headlights on. Tomorrow I am going to check
the output voltage which I believe should be 14.1V. Mine has three wires
in the plug, one red wire goes to the battery, the other to the ignition
switch. According to the Haynes book of amazing facts, the two reds come
together at a fusible link which then goes to the solenoid and on to the
battery. At that first joint, it also branches to the ignition switch.
Blue goes to the charge light.

Will let you know what I find if it helps.

Martin

ISTR 60 is the sidewall height in percentage so 60/100 x 185 = 111mm, but I

  MK2 XR2 original wheels have 185/60/13 tyres.

185 is the tyre width in mm
60 is the side wall height in mm
13 is the wheel size in inches

  I changed to

  165/60/14MK3 Fiesta steel wheels

This means the speedo will over-read by 1 mph.
Its the closest I could get at the time.

I currently have a MK4 Fiesta (parts bin) which is 185/55/14

When these go onto the Q it should under-read by 1 mph, therefore taking me
back to MK2 XR2 again.

Oh to have a tyre with knobbles on and not a nail! A good suggestion Steve,
will investigate. Was considering using it as a planter for my petunias.

I noted that the pepperpot is a 6J rim and it has a 185/60 R13 tyre on, the
current fitted road wheels are 6J's with 165/70 R13 tyres. I am assuming that
there is an extra 2cm on the diameter of the wheels from what the xr2 had, so
does that mean my speedo is under-reading? Must check it next time I go through
one of those "check your speed" signs.

Another dumb question is since both types of rim are 6J and the tyres have
different tread widths, when the time comes to change all the tyres I could go
for 185s?

Rob, I was looking at 14" rims with 185/55 R14 tyres, the thinking being that
the diameter should be correct and not a drastic effect on the ride. I hear
that going for a lower profile tyre can make the ride harsher. Just thinking
of my back!

  Thanks all.

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 Charging - or not!!

2018-07-12 Thread Nigel Plant
Went out to the 2+2 and had a flat battery. Seemingly no ignition light on so
charged battery and tried again. Soon was flat again. Checked the light more
carefully and it was glowing slightly increasing in intensity if I put
headlights on. I had missed this as it was nigh on impossible to see in this
good weather. Put a new alternator on as previously had fitted my Xtreme spare.
No difference.

After scratching my head I assume an earthing problem somewhere or high
resistance in wire to charging light. So here's my question. Is there s
favourite place to start looking on the 2+2?

Also I am used to only two wires on the alternator the battery wires and the
ignition light (blue). This car had a third connection onto the W terminal
which I thought was a pulse signal. I couldn't figure what this was for so
didn't connect it on the new alternator and can't spot anything wrong, apart
from not charging Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks
Nigel

Martin,

Before giving away the XR2 Pepperpot you might want to check if it is worth
anything to someone with an XR2. These cars are getting rare, so a good
condition original alloy wheel might be worth something to the right person.

wheels, I can't imagine the car wearing anything else! I measured the
width of the rim as 6" when I balanced them so most likely they are a 6J.
I am changing the front brake calipers, when they arrive that is, and will
check the inside of the rims for any other markings and numbers. That will
be a major cleaning job!

Regarding new wheels, I had specified the make, model and year of the car
and been told that the correct offset would be applied at the time of
ordering. I wasn't sure then about the J part of it but with your help,
that is much clearer. Whatever I do, I must make sure they have four holes
and not five to mount the wheels on the hubs. This is a whole world I never
knew existed!

Regarding plastic rings to centre the wheels Hans, mine do not have them at
all. The wheels are a nice snug fit when pressed to the hub and hold well
as the bolts are put in place. After I balanced the wheels, the wobble at
around 60mph had gone. A very useful tip nonetheless and one I will bear
in mind if I do change the wheels completely, the companies I looked at all
mentioned rings and I wondered what they were for.

I would be interested to find out more Robmirach. Apart from the
non-matching and missing centre covers, I do not have a good spare either!
The boot contains an original XR2 pepperpot wheel with a tyre size that
does not match the rest. There is also a honking great nail through the
tread that I hadn't notice in the last 15 years. If anyone wants the
wheel, you are welcome - nail included!

Thanks again.
Martin
