[Quantum Owners] Rear Trailing Arms

2021-07-07 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi folks

I hope you are all keeping safe.

Q2-002 has failed her MOT on rear trailing arms, so needs the new ones to
be fitted. Can anyone advise how to get to the front mounting points
please? The only way I can think is through the speaker holes on the left
/ right of the rear seat, or is there an access panel under the carpet
somewhere?

The car is at my mechanics at the moment.

Many thanks as always.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Gelcoat query

2020-08-15 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi

Q2-002 had the same problem - was red, then went very pink. I had a
respray carried out, but it cracked and crazed after a couple of years.

I have now rubbed the paintwork down so it is flat, and used a product
called 'Presto Pro PBR Paint Sealer' for Gelcoat.

Basically you smear the clear liquid onto the car with a paper towel, and
then rub it smooth with another paper towel. The product then cures via UV
(sunlight!), and hardens to a tough polymer coating.

I has not got a full gloss back to Q2-002, but is has now got a uniform
colour, and a kind of semi-gloss / satin sheen to it. I will be at
Curborough if you want to have a look at it. I have also polished it with
AutoGlym as well.

https://www.prestoprotech.com/Boat_Care.html

It cost around £100 for a 4oz bottle, and half a bottle has done my 2+2.

Best regards

[Quantum Owners] Re: Quantum 2+2 Brakes advise please (and fan switch!)

2020-05-31 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi folks

Many thanks for all the suggestions and help as always, I have had the new
brakes fitted, the cylinders were not weeping, they were proper leaking,
and the units fitted were 15mm bore. Also needed new rear flexi pipes as
the originals were welded to the pipes...

Also finally fitted and tested the electronic fan temperature switch, fully
programmable, so have set for turning on at 102C, then off at 92C. My
mechanic agreed that the original switch would either strip the threads, or
crack the casing, so it is not going anywhere...

Have fun and keep safe.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Quantum 2+2 Brakes advise please (and fan switch!)

2020-04-07 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi Dave & Derek

Many thanks for the suggestions / information. I have ordered Mintex front
pads and rear shoes, I have also cheated, and ordered both 15mm and 17.5mm
cylinders, so I should hopefully have the right ones.

With regards to the switch, it seems to be so tight I am in danger of
either stripping the threads, or cracking the housing, so I am going with a
home brew resolution - I've found some thermostat ICs (Dallas DS1620) which
can be programmed to switch a relay on and off at set temperatures with
hysteresis. I even found a laptop with a parallel port to use the
programmer I made back in 1997... will take a bit of trial and error, but
I've got a bit of time on my hands to have a play.

Keep safe, and thanks to you all for your help.

Best regards

I will be making an electronic fan switch, found some parts I purchased 25

[Quantum Owners] Quantum 2+2 Brakes advise please (and fan switch!)

2020-04-06 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hiya folks

I am after some advise please? I am looking to change the rear brake
cylinders on Q2-002 as I have a very minor weep issue, I have read both the
build manuals, and both state that these are not standard Fiesta parts.
The late build manual says 'change the rear wheel cylinders to the correct
size, new ones are supplied in the kit', and the original build manual says
'17.5mm for Vented Front discs, and 15mm for solid front discs, this is not
the same on any other Fiesta'...

Does anyone know of the correct parts please, and also are Ferrodo still
the brake shoe brand of choice, or is there anything more suitable? Also I
may change the front discs / pads as I am not going anywhere fast (pun
intended!), is there anything to look out for on these in terms of brand
etc?

Finally - the fan control switch has failed, I have a new one to fit, but
no amount of socket work will shift it, and I am heading for causing damage
- any recommendations for where and how to fit an new switch to the cooling
system, or should i just fit a manual switch on the dashboard?

Hope you are all keeping safe, and best regards

[Quantum Owners] Re: Alternator Fiesta/ Quantum

2019-11-12 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi

Also make sure you get the correct left or right handed one. I have not
long purchased a new alternator for Q2-002, and the way the adjuster
bracket was mounted, I have to obtain a unit for a OHV engine, not a CVH
engine. The adjuster bracket for the CVH should go over the alternator,
but on mine it fouls the chassis upright, but mounting it under means it
fits properly.

Mine is a 55Amp unit, and it works with the connector on the loom, not sure
if the higher Amp units have separate terminals to screw to?

It works well, I got it via eBay from aapoldham, they were understanding
when I got the wrong one originally.

2019-03-12 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hiya folks

Thanks for the reply, I have checked, and confirm I have the 'under' type
of bracket, so require the Left Hand unit. Easiest way was to swap for a
'Pinto' style alternator, so all sorted. Just got to wait for the lovely
weather so I can actually fit it...

[Quantum Owners] Re: Charging 2+2 query

2019-03-12 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hiya folks

Really daft question - I have ordered a new alternator, but it won't fit.
The seller is absolutely adamant it is the correct one, and says that it is
a right hand fit, and it is the correct unit. I have arranged a return.
I have Googled, and it looks like it should a left hand fit...
To save me keep buying alternators, can anyone advise if it is correct, and
also did Quantum do anything funny to modify the bracket?

On the one I have on the car, then with the 2 mounting lugs on top, the
single mounting lug is near the engine / timing belt. On the one
purchased, the single mounting lug would be near the front of the car...

[Quantum Owners] Charging 2+2 query

2019-03-07 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hiya folks

Q2-002 is in disgrace at the moment... As well as a burst heater hose (to
be fixed when it is dry!), she is having charging issues if anyone can
offer any advise please?
The charge light is on very dimly most of the time at all rev speeds, when
running with no load the voltage is 13.9-14.1V, when the headlights are on
it drops to 13.2V or so. If I put everything on (heater fan / fog lights /
brake lights etc), then the volts drop to 12.5V or so.
If I charge the battery over a weekend, and leave over a couple of days (it
is my daily drive so can't leave longer!), then the battery holds the
charge, and does not seem to significantly drop.
When on tickover at 800rpm on the rev counter, the volts drop down to 12.7V
or so, but go up when revved very slightly.
Finally 2nd strange thing, when I 1st start the car, I have to rev up to
2000rpm to get the red light to turn off / go dim.

I have had a new battery and a recon alternator with the original pulley
wheel last year.
These were changed as I the battery was going flat, and thought these were
the issue, but the original setup did not have the dim ignition light
issue...

Can anyone advise if it is a duff battery, or duff alternator, and is there
an easy way to check? Or any other suggestions please? Is it worth taking
a wire directly from the alternator to the battery?

Hi

If you still have the large 'pancake' filter, it could be vapour lock on
the fuel line as it is quite a nice little heat trap. I have changed to an
K&N filter, but I also wrapped the rubber hose in alumunium tape which
seemed to help.

Hi again Martin

I found this post from March 17 which was a copy from Nov 13... Wonders of
the internet :)

Hi

I posted this back in Nov 2013 (glad the search facility works!). It may
help with the ignition modules.

Finally found the code for the ignition module - the pattern code is XEI9
(Xray, Echo, Indigo, Niner), a quick search shows several other codes -
FORD 6153380, ROVER NJQ10001.

FORD 6 153 380
FORD 6153380
FORD 84SF 12K05 7AA
FORD 84SF 12K05 9AA
FORD 84SF-12K057-AA
FORD 84SF-12K059-AA
LAND ROVER ERR5210
LAND ROVER STC1184
ROVER CDU4175

I hope this helps.

I use Quantum 2+2 Q2-002 every day as my daily drive, as well as for 2
weeks holiday (200 miles each way!) every year. Touch wood the only real
issues have been the fuel line, muck in the carb (from the fuel line!), and
the ignition module (ride on the truck with flashy lights).
As a note - the Ford part was double the part of one for a Landrover
Discovery. Same part code though.
I get 45 mpg on a long run, and 25 ish on the daily drive to work.

The load carrying capacity of the boot is really incredible.

Ask away if you have any queries.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Barry the painter?

2019-01-03 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi Mike

I had the same issue with Q2-002 a few years ago, it would tick over all
day, or run on full throttle, but cut out in between. It turned out the
fuel line was breaking up inside the pipe, and bits of steel were somehow
getting through the filter into the carb, and blocking the 'normal run'
jet. The particles never made it to the 'fast run' jet. When the car
stalled, the particles dropped down, so it started straight away.

Cleaned the carb, new copper fuel line, and all good now.

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Charging - or not!!

2018-07-13 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi

This is really strange - must be down to the weather... Q2-002 had the
same problem, I thought it was the battery, changed it, then a new
alternator. I eventually found thanks to Jim senior that there is a wire
from the battery which goes from the battery negative to just above the
starter motor - clamped by the bell housing for the clutch - nice thick
wire, but totally covered in oil and crud. When I touched the engine end -
it moved. I just tightened it up again, and the problem seems to have gone
away. I have got a secondary battery earth going to the 'wrong' side of
the clutch bell housing, but this does not seem to have much effect as it
has at least 5 joins before it gets to the alternator.

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Carburettor Problems

2018-05-14 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hi Nigel

F77 OFE drinks fuel like no-ones business, but she spends most of her time
with the choke open. It could be the butterflies are a bit sticky. I
found the Ford Escort Mk3 Haynes book of lies has the carb / choke
rebuild.
I would also check the fuel line, mine has a feed and return, and they were
corroded, so instead of being fed back into the tank, it was being finely
sprayed over the road. Finally in the same area, make sure the tank has
not got a hole in it, and the rubber hose connecting the pipe to the fuel
line is ok.

Best regards

2016-05-13 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Hiya

Not sure on the road legal part, but there was someone with a demo of a kit
which was electric - had a motor attached to a gearbox, and lead acid
batteries in the front bay area. There was no body attached - it was just
a space frame chassis.

I cannot remember what the company was called - but it was tucked in one of
the areas between the halls, and was next to a stand showing car seats and
electronic speedos.

I hope this helps.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: Problem with shiny new carb (possible cause; idiot trying to fit it)

2016-05-06 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group
Just another thought...

When you drove the car back from Stoneleigh - did it run properly when you
were using more than tickover / on the 2nd carb opening?

Also - have you looked at the spark plugs to see what colour they are when
you have done a run on the carb? That will point to either running too
lean, or too rich.

The instructions advised to take the existing jet out which was a 117, and
replace with a 122 unit. I purchased mine from Fast Road Cars off eBay -
really helpful and friendly chap - I also ordered a full rebuild kit, and
it arrived the next working day.

You are more than welcome to borrow / try the 117 jet I took out.

Nice to meet you at Stoneleigh. Been thinking about your carb not running
properly...

When I fitted the K&N filter to my car I also read the manual (!), and
found I had to purchase new jets. You may need to investigate if you can
find a Weber specialist locally who can try various jets and have the
various exhaust tester to find the size that runs correctly with the engine

[Quantum Owners] Re: Fuelling - A lucky escape?

2016-03-12 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

Q2-002 had exactly the same thing for 12 months... Would run great, then
just splutter and stop. It would tickover all day with no problems once it
started, but would not run under load - unless I had my foot to the boards.

Turned out it was crud in the carb - the steel fuel line fell apart on me
(different story!). When there was load on the engine - there is more
suction, and the grit or whatever got stuck in the jet. When you stopped,
the grit fell down, so it ran properly until the flow moved the grit up
again.

Quick way to cure it was shown by 'the very nice man with the flashy lights
truck' - we took the air filter off the top of the carb - put the palm of
the hand over the air intake, remove the LT lead from the coil so it will
not start, and crank for 30 secs. This creates a vacuum which sucks the
grit either out of the system, or causes it to stick in the jet, so you can
find and clean it :)

I have now got a fuel filter in the system :)

[Quantum Owners] Re: MPG

Hiya

Q2-002 with Carb and 1.6l XR2 engine did nearly 50MPG when we went to
Hastings from Birmingham (200 miles ish each way!) last year - that was
with all the clothes etc for a weeks holiday. Normal running average is
25-30ish, but if I only run to work and back (2.5 miles each way), I only
get 15-19MPG. The heater just starts to get off freezing as I pull into
the car park... I have also got a K&N air filter and stainless exhaust
fitted.

BTW - only 600 miles to go before the odometer goes to 0.

Hiya

I'm in Cannock (North Birmingham) if you want to have a look to see how
mine it fitted? It is bolted to the boot floor, and it looks like bolted
to the 'inner boot' space on the front edge. There is also a large load
spreading bar along the whole of the rear edge of the boot.

Hiya

This was on another forum (Thanks to JBW!).

http://www.fordopedia.org/parts-catalog/fiesta-mk1

>From this the fuel lines are 8mm feed and 6mm return - I would have thought
it was the same as the Mk2 though - 10mm / 8mm :)

The Brake lines are as follows - from the sheet - it is the same as a MK2
(up to 1988)
Finis Code - 5007396 Ford Part Code - A80SX 2K312 AA

Hope these help. I would strongly recommend fitting copper pipes instead

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 boot struts plus roof issues

2014-06-01 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group

Hiya

If you have vinyl roof, then they do shrink - happened on both my old MG,
and the 2+2. Now got a mohair / double duck (cannot remember which!), This
will not shrink. My solution was to put rubber strips as per for sealing
to door fram on the top of the windows - this helped, and also waterproof
seat covers inside with a chamios leather to dry them with ;-)

With regards to the struts, I have got a 'lift and click' one from an MG
Midget.

http://www.classiccarexchange.co.uk/boot-stay-strut-p-457.html

The eBay one has finished - but it shows a good picture of the unit.

Don't know where you are, but both Barrie @ 'Chase MG', and Paul @ PBW near
Birmingham were really helpful.

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 Intermittent Cutting Out

2014-05-27 Thread 'Jamest142' via Quantum Owners Group

Hiya folks

I am after some advise please?

Q2-002 keeps cutting out at intermittent times. It feels like fuel as it
splutters and hunts, and I have cleaned the carbs, replaced the fuel line
with shiny copper ones, replaced the fuel filter to the fuel pump, and
fitted new rubber pipes to all the other bits. It had a new fuel pump
approx 4 years ago as the old one leaked. It has had new plugs, rotor arm,
dizzy cap and leads. The Ignition Module was replaced last year. The air
filter is now a paper one instead of the K&N as I thought this may have
been the issue to start with before Christmas last year. It happens when
the car is stone cold (did 50 meters this morning before it spluttered),
and also when hot (on the back of a 20 mile run). It has been running
great for the last 3 / 4 weeks or so since the petrol pipes were changed...

Additionally - I had a water leak yesterday, but does not seem to have lost
any water from the coolant tank. Got the engine hot enough for the fan to
cut in, revved it up, squeezed all the hoses, and not a sign of anything.
I have got 'rad weld' in the system, so maybe this has cured it. (It was
coolant - did the taste test).

Don't think the 2 are connected, but any suggestions gratefully received.

Best regards

James T

[Quantum Owners] Footman James Insurance - Check Policy

2014-03-04 Thread Jamest142

Hiya folks

Before I get shot down - I will be shopping around for car insurance this
time ;-)

I have just received my renewal invitation from FJ, and on the back of the
1st page - it states 'The *Driving of Other Vehicles* extension does not
apply. If the extension was previously in force, this will *no longer
apply* from the renewal date'

I take this to mean that the policyholder can no longer drive any car 3rd
party with the owners permission.

Just something to watch out for...

Best regards

[Quantum Owners] Re: Mk2 seat runners / 2+2

2014-02-25 Thread Jamest142

Hiya

Dug out my build manual - not much info, but it states as follows :-

6.15.7 Front Seats. Remove the rear mounting lugs from the bottom of the
seat runners by drilling out the rivets. Bolt the seat to the floor. The
carpet should be cut around the runners. The correct location for the
fixing bolts has been scribed on the underside of the car floor. It is
essential that the seat runners are parallel otherwise they will not slide
freely.

The manual make no reference to Mk3.5, so I guess it is the standard Mk2
runners that are used.

Hope this helps.

Amazingly the STC1184 unit is on eBay for £12 or so. Better than the £40

2013-09-30 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

I would agree - my old (retired) mechanic said he used to keep a know good
one of each type in a drawer as they used to fail regularly.
Mine died totally - full (!) power, then absolutely nothing... Tried to
start it 2 days later - the car fired - sounded ok, then 2 mins later -
stopped, and never worked again.

Depending on your engine - check the code on ebay - I got a Ford pattern
one from the local factors for £30 or so, but a Land Rover pattern unit was
£10. Identical units - go figure...

Hiya

Mine failed a few years ago - be careful - there are 2 types. One is a
cast body, and one is a pressed steel body. The difference is the brake
pipes are in the wrong place. The mechanic had to get a whole new assembly
- the cost was around £180 (!) for the part alone.

Had a quick look for the receipt, but it must be in the infamous 'safe
place', and is not with my other stuff. Unfortunately the mechanic who
sourced has now retired, but if you get desperate I can email him and see
if he can remember who he used for it. No idea when he will reply as he is
touring the south of France.

Hiya folks

I've got one of the round headlight 2+2, and the chassis / frame is nice
90' angles, whereas the later cars have the front chassis / frame at an
angle to allow the flappy gubbins to fit (Technical term for a Saturday!).

Can take pics if anyone needs, but will need someone to advise how to
attach them on here. ;-)

Cannot see why a round bonnet will not fit a later car though. Could you
not trial fit with just the mounting / swivel pins at the lower front
fitted, and see how it goes?

[Quantum Owners] 2+2 / Mk2 Fiesta Brake Reservoir Switch

2013-07-10 Thread Jamest142
Hiya folks

Got Q2-002 through the MOT - 2 new shiny XR2 springs fitted...

Does anyone have the following I can buy please? Ford no longer stock it...

Not sure exactly what the proper name is, but it is the brake fluid
reservoir cap with the fluid sensor. The top bit has vanished, so I can
see the plunger for the switch, and this should be covered by a 1" disk /
cap or so. Probably easier to replace the whole assembly - if I can find
one.

Also tried eBay as well, and no joy.

Best regards

James T

[Quantum Owners] Re: Winter Tyres & Wheels

2011-10-24 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

Thanks for the advise on the tyres - I thought that as it was FWD, I
could get away with just doing the fronts, but it makes sense to do
all 4.

The main reason is to get up my drive (it's a steep slope), and off
the estate - the main roads tend to be reasonably well gritted - most
of the time!!

I have got some 'snowsocks' - I purchased them earlier this year -
best investment ever - the day they arrived was the last day of snow.
I was at work, and my car was at home ;-)

I will post on here if they work (or not), but they are mainly for
emergency use - although the promo video is impressive - the car had
the handbrake on, and the car was still driving along up a slope with
the rear wheels not moving.

Reading through - Matthew - what is the 'manual diff lock trick'
please, and how do you do it?

Best regards

[Quantum Owners] Winter Tyres & Wheels

2011-10-22 Thread Jamest142
Hiya folks

I am thinking of getting some steel wheels, and fitting them with
winter tyres...

Q2-002 is based on a Mk2 XR2 - will standard Fiesta Mk4/5/Ka 155/70/13
standard factory wheels fit, or is it a case of try and see?

Also If I fit winter tyres to the front - will it make any real
difference?

Finally - do I *really* need to fit winter tyres all round, or can I
keep the normal summer tyres on the rear, and just have the steels
with 13" on the front.

I currently have 14" 185 Alloys all round.

Thanks

[Quantum Owners] Re: Quantum Kit Cars is born.

2010-12-28 Thread Jamest142
Hiya Folks

1/ Congratulations, and good luck to Eddie (Most Important!!)

2/ Photography and colour of light - not really important, it is the
balancing that is important. Tungsten is Orange, Flourecent is Green,
and 'Midday Sun' is Blue. Modern cameras can do a pretty good job of
determining 'White' if just one source is used, otherwise gels or
filters are required to change - eg a Flashgun to look like Tungsten
if used inside @ home for instance.

3/ From what I remember of the old headlights - they were orange, and
halogen went more blue, and xeon are 'more' blue. The human eye has
rod and cone receptors. Orange light affects one, and a blueish light
the other (I think cones is orange, but not 100% sure) Either way, the
orange has a higher persistance and lag to change, so you are dazzled
for longer with orange ish light, than with blue ish light, which the
eye can recover quicker.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!!

[Quantum Owners] Re: Drivers side door

2010-11-08 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

Mine does something similar.

I found that if you hold the handle up, then press the button down,
and shut the door, the door is then locked. The key will then open and
lock properly until you open the door.
As soon as the door is opened and shut again, the lock will not turn.

Not an idea solution, but at least you can lock the door until it is
fixed (BTW - no idea what the fix is - I have not had chance to post
the question).

Strongly suggest you make sure the passenger door is open whist you
test this (or have the roof down, and windows down!)

[Quantum Owners] Q2+2 Door Lock Help Request

2010-07-24 Thread Jamest142
Hiya folks

I have got a strange query on Q2-002 - the manual / mechanical drivers
door is playing up - with no warning... Note it has no electric
mechanism either.

I can always open the door when locked via the key.
When I shut the door, I cannot lock with the key. There is mechanical
resistance stopping the key from turning to the lock position.
If I hold the outside latch up, press the button inside, shut the door
- the door is then locked. Providing I don't open the door, it will
lock and unlock with the key with no problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which part is likely to need
replacing please?

[Quantum Owners] Door Lock / Bonnet Catch Query (s)

2010-07-13 Thread Jamest142
Hiya folks

Got a funny on Q2-002 which is a bit strange.

When I open the drivers door, the key unlocks the lock with no
problem. If I open the door, shut it, then try to lock it, there is
mechanical resistance, and I cannot lock the door. If I unlock the
door, then try to re-lock with opening the door, it functions
correctly.

At the moment I have to hold the external door latch up, press the
internal button, then shut the door to lock the car. It has only just
started to do this.

The other funny is a similar situation on the bonnet catch - the
bonnet does not always click in place to close, and there is hard
resistance to the bonnet being pushed down on the mechanism.
Occasionally the bonnet works first time though...

Unfortunately both these problems are only happening when the bodywork
is in the way, so I cannot see the reasons why there is mechanical
resistance.

Both locks have been drowned in WD40 / light oil to see if it is just
something sticky.

Has anyone got any suggestions, or do I need to purchase new
mechanisms for both, and particularly on the door - which bit?

Many thanks

that can do funnies as well. Check the dizzy cap / rotor arm (again if
ifitted)

Sort of - the XR2 rack has a shorter lock to lock because of the wider
wheels fouling the bodywork, whereas the standard rack has half a turn
more.

Basically - the standard rack will work on a 2+2, and (AFAIK) will
give a slightly better turning circle. I have the standard rack on my
car.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Battery drain solved??

2010-05-25 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

If you are leaving the car unused you can buy a trickle charger (looks
like a normal power supply) which will give 100-200mA charge, this
will prevent the battery discharge, and is designed not to over charge
the battery.

If the immobiliser is just a single relay, you could swap it for a
normal hidden switch.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Battery drain

2010-05-24 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

If you hold the -ve wire, and the +ve wire on the meter when on Volts,
the reading will jump around with similar readings due to the
electrical field from mains circuits, high voltage wires etc in the
area. Bear in mind the length of wire in a car, this will even pick up
radio waves etc. Think of it as the transformer effect. (And look up
'Crystal Radio' on the web - you can make a radio which does not need
batteries using the same principle - Maplins do a kit for £6)

The meter may not be calibrated to read exactly zero either - a
tolerance of 0.1% is considered good for a home meter.

As Jim says - this is normal, and likely to be a red herring.

Hiya

I always prefer the word 'should', but I would not risk it just in
case.

Another thought (ouch!) is to make sure the crimps on the connectors
are ok. Also - what is the Voltage when the battery is 'dead' - bear
in mind an LED will only light when connected the correct way round
(and make sure it has a series resistor, or is designed for 12V
operation)

[Quantum Owners] Re: Battery drain

2010-05-24 Thread Jamest142
Hiya

Just a few thoughts...

1/ Don't put an Ohm meter (or Multimeter on Ohm setting) directly
across the battery - if the battery has any power left at all, the
meter will short, and the meter will let the magic smoke out. A good
battery will melt a spanner across the terminals, and the Ohm meter
will pretend to be an spanner for a very short period of time...

2/ The measure if you have any current drain, then the need to connect
the meter - in the highest Amp range - in series with the battery +ve,
and the rest of the car. ie - diagram below:-

Metalwork -> Battery -ve -> [Battery] -> Battery +ve -> Amp
Meter -ve(Black) -> [Meter] -> Amp Meter +ve (Red) -> Car +ve
Wire (Red)

As the previous post - don't try to start the car - this will blow the
meter as well. This will show any significant drain on the battery
whilst standing though.

3/ The Voltage measurements are correct for a battery at rest, and
being charged by the alternator though. Put the headlights on main
beam, and measure when the engine is running - this will highlight any
bad earths (and if the lights are dim it will show if the alternator
is giving Volts, but no Amps)

I suggest you charge the battery, remove the +ve terminal, and measure
from the engine block to the +ve on the Voltage setting, this should
give the same reading as direct voltage across the +ve and -ve on the
battery. If this is ok (12.6V ish) then the earth connection is ok.

Although you have got a new battery - have you cleaned the inside of
the battery clamps themselves - they can get gummed up, and this would
also cause the funny readings. I would also clean the earth straps
(and where they bolt onto).

When measuring - ensure the connection points at each end of the meter
are clean.

Just a few thoughts.

Best regards
