 Hi all.

I have managed to get a couple of things done over the break.

Trigger wheel fitted along with VR backet and sensor for Kremit's megajolt
project. This is just a trial fit (code for aligned the wheel wrongly and
 have to redo...) [image: ???]

Installed a map and got my friend's Merlin Megajolt up and running. 2.1
pinto like mine but on 40DCOEs. It is not running the best he has had it in
 17 years!

Tried a new set of idle jets in my webers 45DCOEs. I currently have 60F8
in, but it is running rich although spitting back. So I tried some 50F9
jets a friend had. The result was that we had to open up the throttle
plates to just the right place under the first progression hole, but I
think they were too far the other way and now too lean. The thing we did
discover whilst playing with things was the idle mixture screws are
knackered, so I have ordered a new set up and gone back to the 60F8 ones.

I am hoping that the Megajolt will allow for a good advance on idle and
give a leaner jet to work without spitting.

Picked up my replacement gearbox so I can actually start that swap job I
have been talking about for 18 months...

I also cleaned up a drill press that was my father-in-laws before he passed
away. It has been sitting for a number of years now and really appreciated
some oil and grease, however it needs a new belt, as the one on there now
 has a permanent kink...

What have you lot been up to?

Wishing you all a Happy New Year.

combination of bits I choose to squeeze in..  I do agree the duratech
  would be sweet as well.

  On 22 November 2011 07:56, Doug doughow...@talktalk.net wrote:
Can't see any fuel residue on the rear tub, so I believe the cap is

The other problem I had a year or two ago was the rubber hose between
the filler cap and the plastic pipe was totally perished.  Clearly
either not a proper fuel pipe, or not resistant to road salts.  That
was the first fuel leak I had, and it pee'd all over the filling
station floor when I was filling it up.  I'm not sure where the pipe
came from, but Quantum did supply one with the kit originally.  You
can check yours just by squeezing it from inside the wheelarch.  When
I did you could see all the cracks, right through to the middle.  I
bought another 2 hose with a shallow bend in it straight away from
Merlin Motorsport.  That one is still fine.

The engine thing is getting a bit off topic, but my thoughts if you
are looking at a Rover V8 then I'd probably go for the Borg Warner T5
box as used in V8 TVRs (Griffith, Chimaera, V8S).  Bellhousings are
pretty easy to come by, and I think the T5 has the same bolt pattern
as the Ford T9, but don't quote me on that.  It is very compact and
light, and can take the torque a lot better than a type 9 box.  People
sell them on PH - try this
  link:http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/viewthread.php?tid=160607
Note on the T5 that there are a number of different locations for the
gear stick.  One might suit the hole in the Xtreme tunnel better than
others.  I can't be more help than that I'm afraid.

For loads of information try the RHOCar website.

For me the perfect engine for the Xtreme is a Duratec 2 litre.  Very
light, and 180bhp on throttle bodies and Omex with no other mods!  The
V8 is as heavy as a Pinto, too torquey by half for such a light car,
and compromises the chassis too much.

If only I had £3k I'd put a Duratec in myself.

Over 100 degrees isn't a problem, thats why cooling systems are pressurised

If it goes over 110 in traffic then maybe you need a bigger fan.

Yes it does use the Sierra fan, it's a blower and it's on the right
side of the rad.

Does the Xtreme use the Sierra rad fan and is it still fitted on the same
 side of the rad ?
Putting a fan on the other side and swapping the wires over doesn't work
 very well.
Sucking fans have different blade shapes to blowing fans.

Its been like it for a while. I know the radiator looks like its seen

I'm planning a trip to classis Le Mans next year and want to do all I

Not that either time has been anything to do with overheating

As you can see from the numbers, the 2+2 far outsold the rest, and so

2011-03-25 Thread Sean
2nd hand values are always difficult to judge. When i made a half
hearted effort in selling mine last year, I had 1 inquiry but no
follow up.

I do hope that the Xtreme on pistonheads sells quickly, so the value
of Xtremes isn't set by this. I think your expectations on value are
about right, however there are some good bargains of other marques out
there. I couldn't sell my Xtreme for the price of the one on
Pistonheads, it's worth more to me than that.

I may readvertise mine in the not too distant future and see what
happens. However, I would need something else to fuel my petrol head
pashion (or pay a chunk of the mortgage off, but that'd be far too
sensible ;-))

Good luck with the sale.

Mines at 135bhp with a 2.1 pinto, you should of bought mine !!

IIRC, the ride heights should be 6.5 at teh rear (measured on the
chasais rail just in front the rear wheel arch and 6 at the front
(measured just behind the front wishbone).

As for sealing the door, I find a plastic bag wedged between my arm
and the gap seems to do the job perfectly !

As for running hot, I have been thinking of putting a hole in teh
bonnet, but haven't got around to it, mine sits at 90 degrees and will
go up to 100 if sat in traffic on a hot day. Another option is to wrap
the exhaust in that bandage looking stuff (don't know the technical
name).

A shallow sump is probably a better option than a sump gaurd. Mine is
approx 1.5 less depth than standard and despite going over speed
bumps etc, it has never made contact with tarmac.

Enjoy,

At the moment it is a standard 1.6 Pinto, type 9 gearbox all from
sierra donor (new brakes, different seats), I am getting 57 BHP max at
the rear wheels (thats both of them, not each!)

My plan is to migrate to a Zetec/Duratec in a year or so- I will be
interested to see what Quantums 'standard' package is - I'm looking
for around 130 BHP as a nice tourer with 'fun' option on the foot.

But have a growing new list of things to do (based on my use so far) -
Raise the rear level (I think I need an inch), better seals for the
doors, higher clutch bite point ??, vent in the bonnet (I think it is
running hot) - I am thinking side holes near the bulkhead to encourage
 through flow. Possible sump guard.

[Quantum Owners] Xtreme bonnet ventilation

2010-07-20 Thread Sean
After 5 years + of Xtreme ownership, I can feel a session of
'dremmeling' coming on !

I'm looking at putting some bonnet ventilation in to try and disipate
some of the heat (temperature gauge is often nudging 100), but I'm
trying to work out / find out who has done what (any pictures would be
useful) of what others have done.

I'm thinking of either a series of holes (50mm dia) or a rounded
rectangle towards the windscreen (similar to Clem's old cosworth
Xtreme) but I'm sure i remember having a duiscussion about the
pressure build up in front of the screen would (in theory) force air
or stop air exiting the bonnet at any speed.

Thoughts and opinions welcome.

What temperature does the fan kick in ? I have an 70 or 75 degree
switch and the fan was on constantly, so have changed it back to a
higher one ! I am thinking of getting one of those variable switches.

Cooling when parked up / sat in traffic is when the temp starts going
up and difficult to get back down, so this is useful knowledge.

Any more ?

 Hi Sean,

I fitted a couple of additional vents in the bonnet over the winter as the

I don't think it has made too much difference to the engine bay temperature
when driving but it has helped the cooling when I park up. The fan only runs
for about 5-10 mins now depending on ambient temperature of course. I
couldn't get my head around the high/low pressure areas over the bonnet so
just plumped for where I thought they looked best - highly scientific!

 I have attached some pics.

I would be inclined to suggest that if you have ventilation holes in the
bonnet, then a low pressure. Should occur above them and thus suck air
 out.
 Good luck

[Quantum Owners] Re: Extreme build Carb / bonnet problem

2009-11-23 Thread Sean
I have twin 45's on my pinto and I don't need a hole for those. The
exhaust however, does.

As I will be changing engine (probably for a zetec) I don't want to
cut out the bonnet and I can't see any obvious solution to fit a
 filter in.

I need to gain about 40mm

I guess this is a similar problem for all pinto's and a few of you
have solved this problem before - any suggestions?

 Thanks.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Winter upgrade list grows longer...

2009-10-17 Thread Sean

I'd be inteested to see how the diff swap goes, I have a sierra LSD
and driveshafts ready to be collected, but unsure if it's worthwhile.

As for the bell housing, it does fit, but with absolute minimal
clearance. Mine does rub on the tunnel every now and again. You will
also find out that the holes around the starter motor in the spacer
plate between block and housing don't line up, I just cut that section
of the spacer off ! As for the clutch, I just madeup a small plate to
support the cable where it enters the housing. Go easy on tightening
the bolts into the housing, they do round off quite easily ! just have
a few nuts and bolts just in case.

I did manage to do everything in a single weekend, so it's not an
impossible task.

Good luck,

Sean

Yep 3.6 open/push in coming out, 3.9 lsd/lobro going in. Bit of an odd-
ball combo, I am using non abs stub axles from a european model 4x4
which allow hopefully will allow me to keep the drums but add the
 lobros.

Ouch didn't realise that I would need to mod the bellhousing, just
thought I'd have a problem with the clutch cable. Can't quite see how
to do that a the moment. Did you have to make up a plate for it - or
 am I missing something.

[Quantum Owners] Xtreme diiff - open to lsd

2009-07-14 Thread Sean

Is it my imagination or has someone on here recently changed an open
diff to an LSD in there Xtreme ?
I keep on thinking a nice Quaife ATB is the way to go, but to save
myself a few £'s a Sierra lsd and a couple of new driveshafts would
appear to be more financial sense.
Is there any chance that the person who done this swap (if anyone did)
can let me know what was involved and give an idea on how the cost of
doing so.

TIA,
Sean

Just spoke to Meurig @ Demon Tweeks, mentioned the club disount,
intially he mentioned 15% quoted me, then he realised it was only 10%,
after a bit of persuasion, he gave me 15% discount ;-)

That order alone has saved me more money than the annual subs for

[Quantum Owners] Re: Track day insurance

2009-02-05 Thread Sean

I have never bothered with track day insurance. It's normally about
£100 / day with an excess of around £2k. In my books, providing you
drive within your limits and are vaugley sensible, you should be OK.

I have a friend who has an Elise and he does have trackday insurance
(for upto 6 a year) as part of his insurance policy, the trackday
organisers are specified on the policy and you have to give them prior
notice. Can't remember who they are, but something along the lines of
Performance Car
