Re: [Quantum Owners] H4 Sealing rear windscreen

2019-05-01 Thread Jim Hearne
It might be some time before my H4 gets back to the stage of working about the
rear screen seal !
But, i do agree, the gap does look bigger on those pictures.
There are various adjustments on the rear screen, including up/down and
front/rear (with shims) on the pivot mounts, and the stops for the closed
position.

I’m at Stoneleigh on the Sunday.

Niall,

The roof system is the best and worst part of the car. Clever, ingenious and
ahead of it's time, but the water ingress is an issue.

As previously noted the rear screen was never meant to entirely seal, but the
handling of the water that does make it in has never to my knowledge been
properly resolved. With Jim Hearne looking at the problem we may now have a
solution on the horizon.

Having said all that, from your photos it appears that the gap on your car is
larger than many. Have you tried adjusting the screen, as there is some
movement available which could lessen the gap.

If you are coming to Stoneleigh this weekend maybe we could have a look?

Regards,
Steve

From Jim's comments it may be worth looking into a seal for the bottom
of the rear screen that is U-shaped and will meet the rubber on the rear

the U-shape seal that would allow water to be fully managed and kept

Re: [Quantum Owners] H4 Sealing rear windscreen

2019-04-30 Thread 'Bill Jackson' via Quantum Owners Group
Hello Niall. I owned an H4 for 8 years from 2009, and when standing idle I
covered it with a waterproof cover. In runnning, however, it never leaked. The
rubber seal you refer to in my case was attached to the body, and the rear
window, when the rear section was raised, simply rested against it. I formed
the impression that the seal was never designed to prevent water dripping past
it.  Below the seal the panel that formed the boot wall was shaped to direct
water down to holes in the floor that allowed the water to run out under the
vehicle. Some considerable work had been done to the boot panel to water proof
it and the channel the water away. The exposed parts of the chassis were
protected form constant wetting by this and covered in copious quantities of
underseal. Good luck with this project...I really enjoyed mine and still miss
it, despite the new car.BillOn Tuesday, 30 April 2019, 21:35:41 BST, Susan

Re: [Quantum Owners] H4 Sealing rear windscreen

2019-04-30 Thread Jim Hearne
It was never intended that the rear screen should be completely
watertight, any water that does get past the rear screen runs down
behind the rear seat area and down through drain holes in the sills.
Unfortunately it goes over part of the chassis on the way down which can
cause some rust issues.

I think the only person that managed to make the rear screen watertight
was Hamish, i'm not sure if he is still on the forum.

If my rebuild gets that far i am thinking on making a channel on the
bottom of the rear screen with a couple of pipes to take the water
directly out below the car rather than letting it find it's own way.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] H4 Sealing rear windscreen

Does anyone out there have a H4 that is completely watertight - particularly
at the rear of the car where the bottom of the windscreen meets the body?

I've been messing around with a variety of different seals for a few weeks
and I just cant seem to figure out how it should work.

The gap between the windscreen and the rear body just looks much too big to
me to find anything that would reasonably seal it?

The old seal was reasonably inflexible and perished but even with a like for
like new seal on there is a whopping gap underneath the windscreen.

I can't even consider taking it out in the rain or washing it or anything!
