damn nonlinear editing. that last sentence was supposed to go at the end of the

given that appvms cant use 3d acceleration anyway, your best bet is intel
graphics. if your going to give a gpu to a vm, then it depends on the os of
that vm.

last i checked, nvidia is fine with virtualization of quadro cards.

make sure the workstation doesnt have AMT (vpro etc) as bussiness lines tend
to. you may be safer with what dell would otherwise sell as a consumer desktop

Create a different VPN ProxyVM for each location you want to use.
You lose leak protection if you use NetworkManager, you should use the
iptables way.

Once you get the first ProxyVM setup correctly, you can copy its files
to other ProxyVMs to save time. Just verify their permissions and change
the desired server in the .ovpn file. Check your MTU settings, too.

Try converting the disks to just be img files, not qcow.

This is my config file for Windows that works on all my PCs.

If they don't work when you convert them, then there is something else wrong.

Just as a test, that is all.

If they do work when converted, then that will tell me everything I need to
know to resolve the issue.

This works and I do get in a terminal in the running fedora-25-dvm internal

terminal open trying to start programs / open files in a disposal VM fails in
the same way. Can I go any further from here / do some useful troubleshooting

I'm assuming this is 3.2.
What template are you using to create the DVMTemplate?
Can you run a terminal in the DVMTemplate using 'qvm-run -a
xterm'?
If not, does the DVMTemplate start?
If it does, but the terminal doesnt appear, you can use 'sudo xl console
' in dom0 to connect to the running qube and see what the problem is.

[qubes-users] Using a remove file from one VM as a block device in another VM

2017-09-11 Thread Nagaev Boris
Hey

I want to store VM data remotely. My plan is to have remote
private.img. I started with an attempt to attach a remote file mounted
with sshfs to another VM:

server$ dd if=/dev/zero of=image seek=1000 bs=1M count=0
vm1$ sshfs -o allow_root server: /tmp/server
dom0$ qvm-block -A vm2 vm1:/tmp/server/image

I expected to see /dev/xvdi in vm2 which I can use to make a partition
table, filesystems and mount locally. I did this successfully with
local (non-FUSE) files from vm1. But there is no /dev/xvdi in vm2 this
time. However Qubes VM Manager displays a drive icon in vm2 status.

Also I tried to loop mount the file locally in vm1 and mount the loop
device to vm2:

vm1$ sudo losetup -f --show /tmp/server/image
/dev/loop2
dom0$ qvm-block -A vm2 vm1:/dev/loop2

Also no success.

Does `qvm-block -A` support files coming from FUSE? What pitfalls can
I face going this way?

--
Best regards,
Boris Nagaev

[qubes-users] Re: HOW TO compile templates from sources

2017-09-11 Thread nicholas roveda
What do you mean by 'pick'?
This is the part I think it's not immediate.

Do the scripts download automatically the chosen version or I have to get the
sources?

I've managed to find only the spec (config) files for Fedora and Debian for
Qubes R3.1 and not for R3.2 or R4.0?
Do you know where I can find at least the necessary files for R3.2?

Can I start from the official rpms, make changes and then rebuild the packages?

[qubes-users] Additional VPN destinations via CLI config?

2017-09-11 Thread anguilla1980
I followed the tutorial here, specifically "Set up a ProxyVM as a VPN gateway
using iptables and CLI scripts"

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/vpn/

I like having the iptables anti-leak rules. However, it's connecting
automatically to my VPN providers destination that I downloaded their .ovpn
for.

Is it possible to compile multiple locations and be able to select which one?

OR perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way? Should I instead use the GUI way
via NetworkManager? Can I configure that for multiple destination choices then
perhaps still add the iptables anti-leak rules?

What's the best way?

Thanks!

If I recall, the current release notes for windows-tools says that the system
tray icon will show no network even tho there is and it works. It is like this
for me and I just accept it.

If someone works out a workaround, cool. But currently, this is expected
behaviour.

[qubes-users] trying to setup VPN on NetVM, can't connect and no error

2017-09-11 Thread André Borud
I'm trying to setup a vpn in the NetVM by importing .ovpn settings. The import
of settings is successful and adds the newly imported VPN to the list of
possible VPNs to connect to. But when clicking on one to connect I get a little
message saying its not possible to connect almost the same instance, like it
actually didn't try to connect.

These are the settings I'm trying to use:

client
dev tun
proto udp
remote ***-a05.*.com 443
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
persist-remote-ip
ca ca.**.com.crt
verify-x509-name ***-a05.*.com name
auth-user-pass
comp-lzo
verb 3
auth SHA256
cipher AES-256-CBC
keysize 256
tls-cipher
TLS-DHE-RSA-WITH-AES-256-CBC-SHA:TLS-DHE-DSS-WITH-AES-256-CBC-SHA:TLS-RSA-WITH-AES-256-CBC-SHA

and then I use a username and password.

Is there a way to see an error message or something atleast to fix whatever the
problem is?

Using QubesOS 3.2 on an Intel NUC i7.

make sure you delete all the old dvm's before creating a new one. Show
internal vms in qubes manager and see if you have more then one.

Yeah, I suggested some other hardware, but they wouldn't budge on that
point, so I have to make do with Dell. I'll have to save the good stuff
for the home build...

So you think I could get away with the AMD graphics card and the E5 Xeon
setup? Or will I be saving myself a lot of hassle by going with the
integrated Intel graphics on the slightly lower end processor?

Part of my motivation here is to hopefully have Qubes up and running on
this machine without too much hassle...like recompiling kernels or
spending tons of time with support.

[qubes-users] HOW TO compile templates from sources

2017-09-11 Thread nicholas roveda
I've tried to figure out something reading the docs, but it seems to me there
are more infos about how to compile a template based on a new system rather
than a Fedora or Debian one.

I wanted to try with the minimal flavour of fedora 25 and Debian 9.

Can someone guide me through the entire process and tell me if its possible to
start from the official rpms too, to make some custom changes?

Thanks guys.

That's pretty lame you can't build your own and get a real mans computer
- one that is owner controlled (ex: talos2, kcma-d8/kgpe-d16)

Being uncertain of the Qubes 4.x requirements more than a year ago I put
in a request for a Dell Precision T5810 workstation with:
CPU: Xeon E5-2630 v4 (10 cores)
RAM: 64GB 2400MHz DDR4 RDIMM ECC RAM
Graphics: AMD FirePro W7100

However, looking at the 4.x requirements page and some forum threads, it
doesn't sound like AMD graphics cards are very Qubes-friendly. My only
other option at this product level is an nVidia Quadro (or AMD Radeon).
Nonsense, as with any linux video driver issue it depends on how new the
hardware is.
The professional series card means you can contact AMD for skilled tech
support, I would also get Dell's ProSupport so that you can get an
american on the phone.

Nvidia is unfriendly to open source and virtualization (on their
consumer devices) even more than AMD these days so I wouldn't, I for one
dislike recompiling the kernel every time I update an nvidia computer
running linux.

I'd like to know if this looks like a good setup to proceed with, or if
I should consider something else (within the Dell lineup/options).

If I wanted to get a Xeon chip with the built-in Intel Graphics built in
I could look at the Precision 3000 series where they offer machines with
a Xeon E3-1275 with only 4 cores, and a maximum of 64GB RAM. Only
problem there is that I run a lot of simultaneous Qubes, including
Windows, so I was concerned that I couldn't expand the RAM on this
machine in the future if necessary. I'll be stuck with this machine
quite a while, so I wanted to make the most of this purchase.

64gb is fine, if you want to save your (their?) money.

[qubes-users] Best options for a 4.x compatible Dell workstation

RAM: 64GB 2400MHz DDR4 RDIMM ECC RAM

However, looking at the 4.x requirements page and some forum threads, it
doesn't sound like AMD graphics cards are very Qubes-friendly. My only
other option at this product level is an nVidia Quadro (or AMD Radeon).

Should I stick with my original configuration, or would you suggest
other options? I really want a machine that will be 4.x compatible, that
would have the least potential hardware issues.

I'm not doing video editing or gaming, but I run a lot of VMs at the
same time that might be memory hungry.
