Hey guys you don't need a VGA ROM for the integrated graphics - they use
coreboot native init.

You need to enable the keyboard sys-usb forwarding permission in qubes
settings files, there is a guide on the website for that.

The best keyboards are made in a first world country and have firmware
that can't be internally flashed - the unicomp keyboards fit the bill
here and are much more secure as the firmware can't be re-written and
they are made in usa thus more trustworthy than one that is made in china.

The price is very reasonable as they are expected to last for 30 years
or so - mine is over a decade old and it still looks good as new after I
clean it and it has also survived spills thanks to the drain holes and
design that prevents water ingress.

Mechanical keyboards are great :D

Can you post some more I formation what you have done to measure startup
time?
Additionally I like to know if you can do the same for Fedora based VMs, as
most of the AppVMs from me are Fedora based.

[qubes-users] Keyboard not working: How to make the buying decision?

2018-04-13 Thread 00010agency
Is there a way to know which keyboards are incompatible with QubesOS?

Or do we just need to keep on buying keyboards until one works?

I'm asking because I bought the (IMHO best ergonomic mouse/keyboard combo;
wireless) "Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop" [0], but only the mouse works
(and only once you have logged into your QubesOS session), not the keyboard.

So based on what is one supposed to make the buying decision?

[qubes-users] Shaving N seconds off VM startup

2018-04-13 Thread Chris Laprise
I've done some experimenting to get my Debian VMs to boot faster. So far
I've reduced the start time significantly by disabling these services in
the template:

apt-daily.service
apt-daily.timer
apt-daily-upgrade.service
apt-daily-upgrade.timer
pppd-dns
lvm2-monitor

Disabling the last two may have consequences, e.g. if you use VMs to
access LVM storage. But that lvm2-monitor does consume a whopping 4+
seconds according to systemd-analyze. YMMV.

And note that my criteria for picking these is just a cursory glance at
unit start times.

Ultimately, a good solution may be getting some of these units to start
10-20 seconds later. I think that makes sense in the case of
lvm2-monitor. Some other time-consuming services like qubes-update-check
already start later and don't seem to impact VM start times and
responsiveness.

FWIW, Ubuntu has announced that boot times have worsened a lot and
they'll make an effort to reduce them (again). Not sure to what extent
that reflects on Debian.

This should work, but like you noted, use a netmask like 255.255.255.0.

Getting the VMs to talk to each other is more complicated. See

This issue (and others) are resolved in whonix 14, now in testing -- you
can upgrade here:

https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Upgrading_Whonix_13_to_Whonix_14

Although it will be less work/risk if you can wait until the templates
are ready. If you attempt the upgrade, be sure to backup your Whonix
appVMs and templateVMs first!

[qubes-users] Windows 7 VM is freezing during the installation

2018-04-13 Thread maxp17 . mp
Hi everyone,

I got an issue in Qubes OS R4.0 when I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a
Standalone VM. The beginning worked well : the installation proceeds and the VM
make a first reboot which works correctly. When I launch again the VM, the
installation continues but the VM freezed when it comes to the second reboot.

If I kill the VM and restart it, the installation fails and I'm forced to
delete the VM in order to restart the process right at the beginning. I tried
three times and it's always the same thing. Are there some people who had the
same issue ?

Regards.

As far as i understood this: If you want to have an Application for your AppVM,
you need to install this Application on the TemplateVM, update it, reboot and
then it should be available in the "Applications" Tab in the VMs settings.

Hope I could have helped you with that.

[qubes-users] R4.0: Can't connect to sys-firewall from Standalone HVM (not based on TemplateVM)

2018-04-13 Thread cr33dc0d3r
Hey there,

i'm fairly new to Qubes and want to build a subnet of 3 standaloneVMs which are
able to communicate through VLAN with each other.

after tried some self created AppVMs, I thought it would be similar using full
virtualized standalone Guest-OSs.

What I've tried so far:
- Installation of various Guest-OSs: Kali, Debian9 (stock), Ubuntu 16.04_4

However, all of them where unable to establish a proper connection to
sys-firewall and by that to the internet.

There is no chance some how to configure the networking automatically over dhcp
since sys-firewall does not offer this i guess.

So what i've tried manually:
- Enter the StandaloneVM IP (as listed in the Qube Manager)
- Enter Gateway IP (of sys-firewall as listed in the Qube Manager)
- Enter the Netmask (as listed in the properties of each VM)

The moment i entered the netmask (32) / (255.255.255.255) the Gateway IP turns
yellow (i guess that means: "Can't reach Gateway" or something like that)

When i set the netmask to (24) / (255.255.255.0) the yellow disappear but i
cant connect to the internet, because sys-net provided this netmask (32) to
sys-firewall and sys-firewall to all connected ones.

My Question? Why its no problem for the AppVMs to connect with sys-firewall but
the standalone ones can't ?

Hope someone can help me with it. Also tried to manually change the netmask in
sys-net but it changes back after reboot.

Thanks,
Jonny
