I can't seem to get it to work with Debian, the closest I have come is to a pop-up alert

It just works using the Fedora 26 template(Not minimal template)...

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Velcro,
Why don't you use the Qubes Docs, and use the command line setup, not
network manager, in the long run , it will less of a puzzle IMO.

PS: can you be more explicit what your saying, are you saying VPN works
using a Fed-26  template but not a Debian-9  version ?

I don't think anyone can help you if you don't state, what you are
doing, and what does and doesn't work :)

It isn't possible unless you set up a clustered file system, which
implies having in-band or out-of-band communication channels between
guests. This breaks compartmentalization, which is Qubes' raison d'etre,
so if you really need this you're better off ditching Qubes and go with
plain kvm (or xen) VMs.

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/windows-vm/

I'd suggest installing Windows 7 over Windows 10 if you don't have
specific requirements: win7 uses lower resources, is more tested by
other Qubes users, and you can install Qubes Windows Tools (although
it's a bit convoluted and there are known issues on 4.0 - see the doc).

> Do I risk my privacy with the additional windows installation?

That depends on what you do with your windows VM :)

For instance my windows VM doesn't have internet access, I only allow
manually the windows update sites when I need to update something so I
should be OK. I always consider it "untrusted" anyway.

> I thought about Virtualbox, but that's also a virtual machine.

I don't think you can run Virtualbox in Qubes anyway (nested
virtualization), and if you do it'll be inefficient.

> What about Linux Wine?

I used it a long time ago before using Qubes, it was a hit or miss
depending on the program you'd run. You'll probably have issues with
graphics if your program uses openGL (qubes doesn't support it). If you
need a windows VM only to run one or two windows apps, then yes, you
should try to install wine first and test if it works - if it does it'll
be much more resource efficient than using a full-blown VM.

hope this helps !

over copying keypairs to VMs; see

The error above is what you get when files aren't found (same as in your
next post). Are you sure that the "whatever_gpg_p*_lesser.key" glob is
OK ? What does `ls -l whatever_gpg_p*_lesser.key` show ?

Hi!

To start qubes os 4 takes a very long time comparing to Qubes os 3.2 (The
double time or more) Is that normal? Also to start a new qube takes a lot of

Is this only a behavior of my computer or is this in general?

I have an asus notebook i7 6500 u processor with 8gb ram and ssd

You can install apps on defaults templates and choice between debian
or fedora is more a personal decision (you trust more one than other,
you like this for some app since it has a more recent version or it's
not available on the other, etc...).

You can add more templates cloning the defaults and modifying them, or
installing some of the community supported or building one yourself.[1]

If you need to install some software not included in the distribution,
you should clone the template and use it with the AppVM which need
that program. You can also use an StandaloneVM if you only need it for
one AppVM.

Installing software from official distribution repositories should be
considered safe but in some cases you could like to use a cloned
template. For example when you want to compile source on some AppVM
but don't want to install a lot of libs and dev packages on the main
template.

Finally is a trade-off between security and hard disk usage. It's
unlikely that a template gets compromised but it could happen and in
some case it's good idea to split your AppVM on different ones.

[qubes-users] AppVM doesnt offer the option to open file in a DVM

2018-04-23 Thread qubes-fan
Hi,

I downloaded and saved the .pdf and .jpeg files in the anon-whonix AppVM. Now I
try to open the file in a dvm but afer rightclick I dont see the option to
"Open in Disposable VM".

I understand the whonix-ws-dvm is assigned to the anon-whonix AppVM, and it
should be avialable in the anon-whonix by default, right?

Where do I make the mistake?

Thank you!

[qubes-users] Help with setting up qubes domains structure

2018-04-23 Thread qubes-fan
Hi, I went carefully through the
https://blog.invisiblethings.org/2011/03/13/partitioning-my-digital-life-into.html

article and would like to get more insight. I am trying to set my structure of
cubes up, and looking for the inputs and ideas. Also I know the thread modeling
is a key every time and there is no fit-for-all layout, but the logic behind
would be nice to see.

I have a very similar setup of domains as mentioned by Joanna in the article.
What I am missing are the settings of the TemplateVMs for the mentioned
AppVMs. What additional apps are installed in which TemplateVM and why.

I understand it is a personal question, but it would help a lot to see whole
picture with reasons for this or that setup. If all the AppVMs are just used
with the preset Templates debian-9, fedora-26 and whonix, or there are some
custom ones.
Like Joanna is mentioning she is using her work-pub AppVM for presentations. Is
it like preparing presentations with Libreoffice  installed in a debian-9
TemplateVM for example, or is there an another TemplateVM dedicated to this
task? If there is, why so?

Maybe some more experienced user could clear this more for me?

Thanks

Are you saying that you cannot install Qubes to the new USB? I am able to boot
onto the Install USB (ISO)and go through the entire installation with all of
the appropriate screens and prompts and boot once into the new USB. My problem
comes on subsequent reboots of the Qubes USB the BIOS does not boot the Qubes
USB.

I see that you're upset with systemd but if I were you I'd try to debug
the cause of your problem and submit an issue/bug report so that fellow
users don't run into the same problem.

As a side note I didn't test to kill systemd (PID 1) but I sort of
expect that the whole system would go down if PID 1 "stops". It's not
different from sysV's PID 1 init.

On 04/23/2018 11:15 AM, galt...@gmail.com wrote:
> Anyone?

That's not something I tested when writing the windows VM doc, it looks
like another issue with QWT under 4.0.

I just tried to create a win AppVM based on a template (if anyone else
wants to try, see steps below) and indeed, the private disk is not
configured; it's not missing though - you can format it and attach it to
d: in windows' disk manager. Obviously the user profile folders will be
missing ; one workaround is to recreate them (didn't test it) or to copy
the templateVM's private disk, like so:

sudo dd conv=sparse if=/dev/mapper/qubes_dom0-vm--test2--private
of=/dev/mapper/qubes_dom0-vm--my--new--qube--private

("test2" is the windows TemplateVM, "my-new-qube" is an AppVM based on
the "test2" TemplateVM ; I don't know if conv=sparse helps).

That's really "low-level" and error-prone so be extra careful with dd;
maybe there are higher level qubes* (or LVM) tools that can perform
that, I didn't have time to check

Once the private disk is copied everything seems to work ; I only get a
popup for xen stuff asking me to restart the VM but simply clicking "no"
is enough.

steps:
- clone a working windows install into a TemplateVM (qvm-clone --class)
- create an AppVM based on this TemplateVM (had to fix the following
prefs because they weren't set properly: kernel, maxmem, memory, virt_mode
- replicate the private disk with `dd`
- start the new AppVM

Yeah, it isn't very Laptop-Docking friendly (yet). But my issues are mainly
with a workstation. My Laptop doesn't do it because I shut it down every night
because of docking issues with Qubes.

Normally Qubes runs fine. But so much drive space is used. That's why I wanted
some small templates without the "crap" that just consumes resources. The
minimal template still has a lot.

So I was just hoping for a real minimal version of things. That was all this
thread was about.

I have 18 guests running most of the time these days on my workstation.
That includes the sys-net, sys-firewall, anon-gw, and many more.
They are always doing things and consuming RAM and CPU.
For windows I run XP through to 10. For testing purposes.
I have compilers running for compiling software.
I have browsers open running things from Debian and Fedora and Whonix.
I have 90% of my RAM used most of the time.
My CPU sits high usage, 75%+.

I've had my system freeze, and I wonder why.
I reboot and check my logs, and it's something that caused systemd to just stop
working. and that was a bland install, and systemd stopped. everything runs
under sysstemd, where it used to be everything was separate. so if systemd
stops, everything stops. that is windows methodology. (That's when i lost
interest in systemd and it has not changed.
