So I'd itch to see how it's done right.

Hi unman,

after our last conversation I switched all my templates to buster to
check if I tricked myself into thinking Ubuntu would somehow be easier.
You were right, there is really no difference to speak of. Somehow my
personal learning curve worked out in a way that I thought Ubuntu was
easier.

What I do like so much about Ubuntu in fact comes down to the Ambiance
theme, the Humanity icon set and the ubuntu font. I can copy these to
any Linux distro.

That being said, I would love to read your write-up for educational
purposes.

The PR has been merged, so a simple update on the sources will do.

I do have a focal template there - Made it for a client, but thought I'd
make it available.
It wont be available in qubes-builder until the debootstrap scripts are
updated to include focal.
If anyone's interested, I could provide a quick write-up on how to build
the focal template..

LuksOpen worked now, it was stupid of me to forget the sudo.

Mounted it as oldhdd, using
ls -al /dev/mapper/*-private says there is no such directory

ls -al /dev/mapper/oldhdd-private says the same

ls -al /dev/mapper/oldhdd returns only one line
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 May 31 17:39 /dev/mapper/oldhdd -> ../dm-0

Tried those 3 ways with and without sudo

I really appreciate you helping me, sorry to be so dumb for these stuff, I
manage just fine for every day things.

it contains an lvm stack, so there will be many virtual volumes inside.
after the luksOpen, check "ls -al /dev/mapper/*-private" and look for
the devices with the names of your old VMs.
you should be able to mount these.
hint: use "sudo mount /dev/mapper/whatever-private /mnt/whatever"
hint2: you will have to replace the "whatever" part there.
hint3: you will have to "sudo mkdir /mnt/whatever"

or create new VMs, and restore the whole private volumes with dd.

I attached the hdd to a VM and used the fdisk -l command, with /dev/hdx it says
the directory did not exists so I brought up the gnome-disks GUI and saw that
it was on the directory /dev/xvdi but using that it just says permission denied.

I googled the cryptopen and if the command I'm supposed to enter is the
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/xvdi2 name, then it says access denied, I can
seemingly unencrypted it from the gnome-disks GUI but not mount it.

However I tried booting up the old hdd again and now it works as long as the
ssd is connected too but all my data is gone and is just a clone of the new
ssd, without the ssd connected it doesn't boot up like before, I guess it has
been formatted then, is there a way to recover some of the lost information? I
only really need a few files.

assuming you were NOT reinstalling because you were compromised...

- just boot your new qubes system
- with the old HDD attached (directly or through USB)
- check if there are partitions on it (fdisk -l /dev/hdx)
- open the luks container from the HDD (google: cryptopen)
- you should now have access to the lvm volume of your old system
- with that access, you can create replacement vms and dd over their
  private volumes.

see how far you can get on that list.
ask more specific questions as required.

did I format my disk accidentally or could it be a grub issue? What can I do?

Yes it's the idea.

The last remaining organizational thing would be how to display those multiple
desktops/GuiVMs. That could still be separate DISPLAY or separate workspaces
(shortcuts management difficulties probably).

Currently we have dom0 the "root" display, showing one fullscreen GuiVM (due to
emulated GPU pass-through). But, I don't see any obstacle at dom0 boot, to
start multiple Xsessions where you run manually gui-daemon associated to
specific GuiVM. In the future, this setup would be initialized into the GuiVM
itself with GPU passthrough.

If you run into this work, I could help you for support.

Best,
Frédéric

That sounds reasonable. As it is, without further adjustment, I cannot get
a second X server to start up correctly under 4.0.

I'm using window manager workspaces now to mentally separate out different
work-streams across a dozen running VMs sometimes.

However, it might be nicer to have a stronger organizational (and mental)
partition and multiple X servers with the UI of running VMs associated with
different X servers would be nice.

Perhaps multiple GUIVMs could serve that purpose?

The process isn't terribly involved, go into /etc/apt/sources.list and
change any mentions of buster or what-have-you, and replace that with
jessie, "sudo apt update" Jessie uses the 3.16 kernel(specific package name
found with "aptitude search linux-image), so "sudo apt install
linux-image-3.16.0-10-amd64 && sudo apt-get install
linux-headers-3.16.0-10-amd64" and finally to apply the change "sudo
apt-cache policy linux-image-3.16.0-10-amd64" and voila. honestly probably
a little more hassle than just grabbing an old template from the qubes
repository, but I have almost always preferred doing things the harder way
at first just for the learning experience.

just install the right rpm for either kernel or debian template.
so close to no effort, just a bit of download+diskspace required.

they are all still in the repo, even if very outdated:

https://ftp.qubes-os.org/repo/yum/r4.0/current/dom0/fc25/rpm/

check the kernel-qubes-vm-* and kernel-latest-qubes-vm-*

even more versions if you look at the -testing repo:

https://ftp.qubes-os.org/repo/yum/r4.0/current-testing/dom0/fc25/rpm/

minor points to consider:
- make sure you pick the *qubes-vm* pkg if you want a kernel for use in
  appvms.
- you can have as many vm-kernels installed as you have diskspace for.
- if you want to use many and use automated updates, may want to crank
  up installonly_limit in dom0:/etc/dnf/dnf.conf and add kernel-latest
  and kernel-latest-qubes-vm to installonlypkgs.
- depending on how you install the pkgs, you may have to use --force to
make it install _older_ pkgs than already installed.

not familiar with revodrive, but for installing to a different kind
of barely-supported storage (internal eMMC via sdhci-pci driver) i
tend to just install to a USB stick (32GB+ will do, but you have to
be quite patient) and dd the partitions over to the target storage.

since most of the referencing (like from fstab, initrd) is done by
uuid there is basicly no config adjustment required when moving
the partitions around.
this also allows "hybrid" modes for these "oh yeah, i botched the
internal bootloader, so let me /boot from USB again while using
internal luks/root volume".
