Depends on your ears and the base level of the bitrate: 32 vs. 128? YES! 192
vs. 320? Only your ears can say for sure.

It would be great if Logitech would publish online comprehensive users
manuals for all their SB products. They do have abbreviated user guides,
but it would be really great if they could publish comprehensive guides
which would address most of the questions asked in this newsgroup, such as
how to install third party plugins, etc. The SB products are really great,
but their documentation leaves a lot to be desired. They are primarily just
cover basic functions.

Maybe it hadn't occurred to you that your experiences are not the same
as other users experiences.

Alarm functionality on the radio has been very temperamental for me and
obviously many other users and Logitech has absolutely failed to deliver
in terms of providing fixes (let alone enhancements) in a timely manner.

This is indefensible. The best they can do is promise to do better in
the future and actually make it happen.

P.S. If the word hell bothers you then I would advise you to jump into
a time machine and go back about 100 years when one did not run into
such words being used in a public venue.

You can also program ten presets, not just six.
Press & hold that number key (7 thru 0) while playing a stream.

Also, within Favorites menu, if you press 53 you will be taken to your
Favorites # 53 stream (numerical from beginning to end within the
Favorites folder).
You can go into the hundreds if you want to. :)

Yes, you must be on one, or limit use to just the Audio Input on your
player (if it has one) for an iPod type device.

SqueezeBox Server will do everything MySqueezeBox.com will do and MORE,
and is far more customizable.

But if you have no local music, or just want to turn off your computer,
you can switch to MySB for Internet Radio, Podcasts, Music Services,
etc...

Try both, see which you prefer.

Usually you need to run squeezeboxserver to access your music
collection (unless you subscribed to online storage like mp3lockers.)
You also need squeezeboxserver if the internet radio station or online
music is in a format requiring transcoding (e.g. realaudio stream, some
mms streams). Also, if you want to use some plugins like powercenter
(to control X10 devices), you need squeezeboxserver. Chances are you
will need to connect to squeezeboxserver from time to time.

The main advantage of Mysqueezebox.com is that you do not need to power
on your own computer if the music you want to listen is supported by
your squeezebox. It is mainly about saving power. The downside is that
you may need to switch between Mysqueezebox.com and squeezeboxserver
from time to time. It is sometimes confusing for people, especially
other family members. Therefore a lot of people (me included) just
connect to squeezeboxserver all the time. Those people usually either
have a very power efficient computer/NAS running 24/7 or with a regular
computer but set up auto-standby to sleep in combination with
wake-on-lan to save power.

Well, this is something Logitech needs to deliver. We shouldn't have
to rely on third party developers (as good as they are) for basic
functionality.

When the alarm goes off there should be a LARGE time display and some
clear instructions on what to do to snooze, disable, or disable and keep
playing the music.

I don't imagine it would be complicated at all and I could probably
write it myself, but it's something Logitech should be addressing.

You can't navigate on the Radio with a remote anyway because the screen
is too small to read from the distance. But it is totally sufficient for
power on/off, volume up/down, pause, skip.

I don't like that it comes bundled with the battery, but that's a

Press the number keys multiple times to get the other letters. For
example, to get "N" press the 6 key _twice_, with only a short pause
between presses. To get "C" press the 2 key 3 times. It's the way cell
phones have worked for a long time.

If you use Squeezebox Server (not mysb.com) you may also want to
install the LazySearch plugin. With LazySearch you only press a number
key once for each letter, and it figures out what the possible
combinations are. So, for Amy Goodman you would type "269" and it would
list all relevant combinations of (abc)(mno)(wxyz).

[SlimDevices: Radio] Received my Touch REMOTE yesterday

2010-02-24 Thread jeanwedding

Finally got my 2 Touch remote controls, one of you recommended . I like
it a whole lot better than the remote, the Boom has. By pic, it looks
the the Radio accessory pack for the Radio ,has the same remote as the
Boom.
I say Boo to that. I like this Touch remote a whole lot better
Logitech are you listening.?
Well so far I mostly use the Volume. I messed the with the remote
some, and found that the numbers 1 to 6 control my six presets.
Yeah I use them most.
The favorites buttons do show my Favorites So I assume those
bottom 5 buttons are for "music collections on computers." which I have
no intersest in. Im a talk show listener only.
I tried the alphabet part of the key pad, but cant figure out how to
navigate there. Cause I tried under "search" in my internet radio
category. To "type" with it, but how do I get say to the "n" key on the
number 6 m,n,o key. Cause when I pushed the 6 key I got the "m".
Any comments out there please. Maybe its in the owners manual, for
the Touch itself ???
thanks
Jean

[SlimDevices: Radio] Sync

2010-02-24 Thread Tony T

The SB Radio that I'm syncing to stops 'playing' after a short time, but
if I turn the volume knob it will start playing (and then stop again in
a short period of time)

Anyone else having this problem?

Tony

Thanks for the tip on the buttons, I actually knew about the power
button but since it is not documented I felt that was poor. They should
REMOVE the ability to scroll and disable, you should only be able to do
it ONE way. In many UI it makes sense to allow the user many options
but not in this case.

Oh and the actually went backwards in UI from 7.4.1. In 7.4.1 the
radio would pop up a quick message saying the alarm has been disabled
when you press the power button. 7.4.2 it no longer does this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox 7.4.2 - what the HELL Logitech?

2010-02-24 Thread tcutting

Maybe erland can figure something out - like allowing one of the custom
clock screensavers to over-ride the alarm popup (he has a way to replace
the "now playing" screen). I use the new button setup (volume knob/mute
for "snooze"; "back" for "let alarm continue"; "power" for "turn-off
alarm") so I would prefer NO popup at all.

I don't use the big button anymore with 7.4.2.
You can hit the volume-button (will act as 'snooze') and the power
button (will act as 'alarm off').

These shortcuts are not documented though thats why there is still a
menu :)

As to the possebility for third party dev to change the popup-UI:
Actually I wanted to provide a patch but unfortunately I found a new
hobby in the meantime: writing a poker bot (and having a family now) :)
So I guess it will take some more time until someone else opts to

In VA I pay $0.15/kwH which I thought was on the high side. Pisses me
off knowing that my coworker who basically lives across the street pays
$0.09/kwH! Different companies service our houses, I called around
seeing if I could somehow get his company but I can not. Basically they
deregulated the power companies under the thought that they would be
self-regulated by consumer choice, however consumers still do not have a
choice so not sure what the people were smoking who thought that made
sense? I am not for government regulation in most cases however some
industries just do not lend themselves to consumer choice and must be
regulated to prevent monopolistic practices.

Sorry for the rant back on topic:
I have been using 7.4.2 for a bit now and while it improves the Alarm
reliability for me and I do not have any bugs, I do find the UI horrible
for an Alarm. Not sure why the devs do not understand these basic alarm
rules:
1. It should be easy to snooze without looking at it.
2. It should NOT be easy to disable
3. Snooze and disable should not be easily confused
4. When I do disable I should have clear indication that the alarm
will not go off again in 10 min.

Right now using the scroll knob to snooze or disable is not good. Too
easy to confuse the two. What I would suggest to the Devs is have the
big wheel knob button Snooze and have the Power button disable and NOT
use the turning of the knob to do it, then you can just have a popup
like you have now but with icons telling the user how to do the two
tasks. This would probably require less screen area and allow more room
for a LARGER display of the time.
Then to meet number 4, use the alarm icon you already have but when the
alarm is in snooze mode have the icon blink. When the alarm is disabled
have it stop blinking.

Back in November, I filed a support ticket with Logictech regarding
the squeezebox radio unable to play .aif and I was told it would be
fixed in 7.4.2 firmware. Now, 7.4.2 is released and still can't play

I had this nonsense as well. Oddly the first time it downloaded it was
REALLY slow, like % per 30 seconds or something. Pulled power at 99%
and then it downloaded quicker. Very odd, and somewhat worrying when a
critical thing like firmware updates aren't flawless. :( I hope the
update to 7.4.3/7.5 actually works properly.

There was some talk about allowing 3rd party apps to override the

Well the loud volume burst prior to alarm fade in is not fixed, guess I
have to wait for 7.5 for that problem.

I thought the alarm default screen was being changed as well to make
the time actually readable when the alarm is going off, but apparently
that's not the case either.

I can only hope that the next update that fixes some of these other
issues doesn't take another four months to issue.

Does 7.4.2 include minium brightness settings when using auto dimming?
Or is that 7.5. Its not clear from the release notes if this is
included in 7.4.2 or not.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Mysqueezebox.com non-listing ofSqueezeboxBoom device

2010-02-24 Thread Kenneth Ruggles
I did as you indicated. Thanks for the info. However, the email account I
used on my Squeezebox Boom device is the same as the email address I use on
my two Squeezebox radios. As I indicated in my earlier email, only the two
Squeezebox radio devices are listed as players on mysqueezebox.com. The
Squeezebox Boom device is still not listed as a player on mysqueezebox.com.
As I also indicated in my previous email, the Squeezebox Boom device works
perfectly and as expected with all the apps, such as Radio365, Pandora and
Radio Time as do the two Squeezebox radios.

I guess there must be another issue which I cannot figure out. I am really
puzzled. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again for the help!

Ken

Press and hold the left arrow button until the Squeezebox Setup menu
appears.
Select "Connect to mysqueezebox.com" and press the knob.
Select "Settings" and press the knob.
Select "Information" and press the knob.
Select "mysqueezebox.com Information" and press the knob.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Last FM Skip

2010-02-24 Thread miniwaites

Hello All,

just wondered if anyone else had noticed that with 7.5, when listening
to My Station on Last FM that the skip (or forward) button doesn't work.
You can skip via the web interface, but not via the actual hard button
on the radio itself.

Is this just me or a software bug?

thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Port Settings

2010-02-24 Thread toby10

Try changing your SBS server port within the UI:
SBS > Settings > Advanced > Network > Port Number

You are likely having issues with Internet Radio on 7.5 because 7.5
uses a different MySB.com server and your Radio is likely registered to
the standard (production) MySB.com
7.5 beta-MySB.com works as well as the regular MySB.com when the
players are properly associated with beta-MySB.com

I'd suggest using the 7.4.2 version for your usage. ;)

Alternatively, there are utility apps for managing your iTunes library -
including features to export artwork. I found one via google - sorry
don't have the name to hand. Then you can keep your artwork separate
from the audio files or embed it using utilities such as mp3tag. Tons of
info in the ripping/managing forum. Good luck.

2010-02-24 Thread bluegaspode

> So the radio is dependent on an external server "helping" the radio to
> function properly. Not to mention dependent on a connection to the
> Internet in your home.
You miss the point. Its not about having a server at all.
If you want a reliable (7.4.1) alarm its about if you are able to run a
100% working 24x7 server (and network).
And I guess 90% of all people bying a Squeezebox-Radio are not able to
create such an environment.

Take MySB.com - it hasn't been reliable at all lately (in europe) - yes
in the meantime they finally managed to upgrade their server, but this
was only two weeks ago.
And anyone not into computers won't be able to run its own 100% 24x7
local server (even if you say 'just leave your computer on' - I'm sure
my wife one day would have turned it off - not knowing that the alarm
then wouldn't work).

Finally there were network reliability problems. For instance even if
you have a local server your internet stream you use as alarm sound
could be failing.
And there where MySB.com connection problems - so even when MySB.com
was up the radio disconnected within 24 hours (creating a failing
alarm)

Actually for all this situations the Radio was supposed to have at
least a working fallback - unfortunately this didn't work at all.

So in the end Logitech until this week was selling a device that is
supposed to work as a replacement (not a company) for your $5 clock, but
leaving us with a broken/unreliable alarm for 5 months.

And thats what jmpage is complaining about.
