Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio turns off after sleep, can I set to standby after sleep timer?

2010-03-15 Thread trouty00

Ok, I will try to be clearer,

Bedtime- Player A (receiver-lounge) and Player B(Radio-kitchen) are
both synced and I then have a sleep timer for when I go to bed, I set
sleep timer on either device which puts them both to sleep after a set
time.

Player B (Radio-kitchen) goes in to almost its soft-off standby mode
rather than its stopped, not playing mode and receiver just goes to
standby.

In the morning I have an alarm configured on Player A (reciever-lounge)
which goes of fine however Player B(Radio-kitchen) does not wake up and
join player A in playing my alarm.

That make more sense?

Marc, don't grumble, that's not true.
I'd say that 95% of your suggestions made it in the final code - and
the last 5% either didn't look important or you were not able to make
your point why some scenarios would fail when these parts were done
differently.
Also some good things came from Ben like caching the snooze-time from
the server or better/correct detection of failing audio.

In the end Ben had a lot of testcases which he went through with the
final implementation and I think its not fair to say 'If you had taken
all of my code without questioning it wouldn't have happened' without
providing prove of it or providing a failing testcase.
We are all professional coders and should trust to make right decisions
in the void that is left without testcases.

Now the work is to find out what the missing cases are and as we have
very good logging (and some user with problems) this shouldn't be too
difficult.

Though it's not good that the fallback alarm is maybe firing too often
- its a good sign for reliablitiy (as it's better than a missing
alarm).

I didn't have any alarm problem yet though I'm waking up to it every
morning - so I'm very interested to see some logs from the radio !

By the way - as logitechs focus has moved away from the alarm again I
would spent my time only in documenting the failing cases but personally
wouldn't look into the code again. Would be too depressing to wait for
someone caring for that in the end (did that once for 4 month, not again
;) )

All *beeps* are annoying to me. :)

Charging is when the battery is charging (confirming it is plugged in

I think I have set this to 'disabled', tho I'm not sure if this is
the green or the black state.
We will see.
This morning JJ came on, I pressed back, then the BBCR4 button, and it came on.
And then it stopped after 2 mins, later found to have been caused by

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio - Full Power down when on battery?

2010-03-15 Thread JJZolx

Ask yourself this: Would the battery life of (totally guessing here)
6-10 hours be sufficient for this application if it did _not_ power
itself down completely? The big power drain here is the wifi and as
long as the Radio is in standby, the wifi would run and stay in contact
with the wireless network. Do you really want to charge it every 8
hours so that you can keep it ready to use instantly? Would it be
better to wait to power up or find a Radio with a completely dead
battery when you went to use it?

I suppose it could be made configurable to shut down the wifi radio
instead of powering off completely, but I've witnessed Squeezeboxes
trying to re-establish wireless connections (log in to wireless router,
find server, etc.) enough times to think that it wouldn't be much faster
than going through the full power up sequence.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio - Full Power down when on battery?

2010-03-15 Thread twynne

Thanks for the replies everyone. A couple of points:

1. I don't see why it can't just power down everything *but* the
wireless and still last for several days on battery. I've got other
wireless devices (with much smaller batteries) that in some cases last
for weeks in this state. Fair enough, they may not be 'constantly'
connected, but I'm not sure the Radio needs to be either.

2. Agree with jdoering that it's easy to interpret this as a bug as
it's exhibiting behaviour it never has before, and there appear to be no
related settings on the player or SBS.

Having it power down fully does present a problem in other ways. For
example, I most often control my various players using Applescript,
which I use to power on the ones I want, set volume, play favourites,
etc. This clearly won't work with the player powered down, and I'm not
yet sure if it's going to cause the script to error as well.

I can live with it disconnecting itself from the wireless (even at the
expense of the scripting) to save on battery, but I'd rather it went
into some sort of sleep with screen, sound, wireless, etc. off but able
to wake instantly. The startup sequence takes long enough as to be
annoying in the morning when I go to use it.

Thoughts?

[SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm stays the same whatever I set

2010-03-15 Thread Cockeye

I've got a strange problem with my alarm. Since I purchased it has been
absolutely fineuntil it suddenly dropped off my network a few weeks
ago and wouldn't reconnect whatever I did.

So I had to turn the power off and back on again and now it connects
fine. trouble is, I used to wake up to Radio 2 in the mornings which
was great.

Since the "dropping off the network" issue, even with the alarm set to
radio 2, it gives me some kind of endless bassline pattern which gets
old very fast. I have to get up and manually tune to radio 2. Now it
does get me up earlier but it is bloody annoying.

Does anyone have a clue about what might have gone wrong and what I
should do to fix it?

I believe the behavior was designed to increase battery run time
between charges through full shut down after 20 minutes or so of
inactivity. Personally, I like the idea. Less recharging and how hard is
it to press the power button on the way to take the first morning leak?
By the time one is done, the SB Radio should be all booted and ready to
play. Of course the other solution to your specific concern is to move
it from bedroom (plugged in) to bathroom (unplugged) and back to bedroom
(plugged in) so that full shut down never happens.

As for no outlets in the Head, how did you guys use electric shavers
back in the day when they required a cord? Did one have to shave in the
bedroom in front of the dresser or in the hallway at the makeup mirror?
Woman have to use butane curling irons or blow dry their hair someplace
else besides the bathroom?

Back in the day before GFIs, the outlet used to be built into the
vanity lighting above the mirror. Cords were required to be only long
enough to reach ones neck when standing up. It was hoped that this would
prevent a device from reaching a bathroom water source while plugged in
as the cord was not long enough while plugged in to even reach the
counter much less the sink.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio - Full Power down when on battery?

As for the first point, I understand the reasoning - just wish there
were a bit solution to a full shutdown. My iPod Touch is similar (with
a MUCH smaller battery and a much larger screen) but only appears to
connect to the network when the screen is activated. The battery lasts
for weeks!

As for the outlets, some UK bathrooms have a special outlet for shavers
but these are very limited in the types of device you can plug in - for
one by the type of plug and secondly by the max power drawn. If you
plugged in a Radio I suspect you'd blow the plug. In my case, this plug
is inside a cabinet so it wouldn't be practical anyway.

Not sure the history, but they're very careful about power in bathrooms
here! I'm sure it's a building reg that an outlet can't be within x of
a water source or similar.

You many want to consider connecting a low powered older computer to your
network (wired or unwired), which I think most people have, and install SB
server on it. You can leave that on all the time. I think the energy usage
for those old PC's would be much less than your main powerful computer.
This would allow you to have SB server access all the time. You could store
your music on this old computer's hard drive accessible to all your SB
players at any time.

If you're running Squeezebox Server, my KidsPlay plugin will let you do

willing to pay $50 for it. (don't get greedy pippin) It's a better
interface than the remote. Syncing and unsyncing, play list editing, so
much easier than the duet controller.
To be honest, if you don't already have a controller or an

I get this as well. Very annoying. Never happens on my receiver though,
both running wireless. running 7.4.2 playing mp3's always at least 70%
signal.

I hear what you are saying, and you are right that Ben worked hard
toward resolution of the alarm problems. Having said that, I disagree
with some of what you stated above. Obviously, the alarm malfunctions
I've witnessed in 7.4.2 are better than a missing alarm (no need for a
specious argument)...I'll get the customary disclaimer out of the
way [yet again] about how the underlying architecture is heavily flawed
(the client/server aspect doesn't make sense in the context of how
SC/MySB.com communicate with the Radio). The attempts I made to patch
the existing architecture (it was clear a wholesale overhaul was not in
the cards short term) for stability would indeed have resulted in a more
stable alarm situation for 7.4.2. On that point we disagree. Enough
has been changed such that I would need to largely begin anew in
debugging/resolving. And for what...?

Your good nature and useful input (along with that of others) served to
greatly assist during the process. The environment here at the forums
is compelling, as well (friendly, cooperative, etc.). However, there
are indeed changes that were made to my modifications which were unwise.
In the final analysis, alarms are still less stable than they should
be...

I don't mind giving of my free time, but I'm not enthusiastic about

[SlimDevices: Radio] French translations

There are some french translations missing in the menu of the Squeezebox

I don't know if Logitech is aware of that, and if they need a french
translation...

Yup. Even go get yourself an ipod touch for the Apple Store in the

I also don't put all albums up on my mp3tunes account. This way I have
two libraries. I use mp3tunes as my main library which just contains our
favourite albums, and if I feel like listening to something more obscure
I would connect to the SBS on the PC. Which I found I hardly do these
days. (My wife hates scrolling through the hundreds of artists in my
full collection)

I wish the SBS had the option for native libraries. It seems so logical
really as more than one person often lives in a house and they may not
want to scroll through someone else's record collection to find their
own.

Glad this solution works for you. I'd be interested to know if you also
get the odd song that doesn't upload or if it really is just me.

I think its not fair to claim your patch was the best of all and
everything done later was to the worse.
Your change was a BIG step towards a very good solution on the given
architecture, but also with Bens additional changes to your patch we
have a much more stable alarm situation in 7.4.2. Maybe even more stable
than your patch ? Who knows ?

Without logs for the current minor hickups noone is able to tell, who
is to blame. Remaining parts from the 7.4.1 code-base? Your original
patch ? Bens later changes ?

Marc;525403 Wrote:

To make at least one logitech developer feel very comfortable with the
current code :)
It wouldn't make sense to take your changes as a 1:1 copy to make your
debugging now easier ... its far more important that logitech feels
comfortable with the code and is able to understand its current ideas on
the long run.

That being said - lets at least spend time in creating the appropiate
logs for the current 'backup alarm even though the stream seems to be
available' problem. Noone asks for or expects further debugging.

You are welcome to your opinion, of course. If anyone has the desire,
time, and compunction to look back at the extensive conversation thread
that took place in the developers forum then it's there for the
perusing.

Honestly, your comments are a pointed illustration as to why it makes
little sense to keep working toward stability. Your 95% estimate of my
changes that were incorporated is a poor one. My architecture was
indeed used, but far more than 5% of the changes that I made were
discarded. The devil is in the details, and the details were not
respected properly when important pieces were discarded. This is
particularly true in the context of how the client/server architecture
used is/was unintuitive and more, rather than less, pedantic code is/was
clearly a necessity to track and defend against unexpected behaviors.

You are wrong, by the way, about the changes made to my modifications
having increased stability. They did not, as evidenced by the problems
that remain in 7.4.2. I warned specifically against sacrificing some of
the state tracking I had added, yet my warnings went unheeded. It's
true that you weren't convinced after much debate, though, so perhaps
you still believe the right course was pursued. I admit that it's a bit
offensive, though, when you say glibly that perhaps the changes I
recommended retaining weren't up to the standards of the now
disseminated 7.4.2 code - which is clearly still unstable. It would
make sense for you to defend the now released 7.4.2 code, despite its
continued instability, I suppose, since perhaps you feel the need to
take some measure of responsibility for not being convinced of a number
of the since discarded stability measures I lobbied for.

I attempted to get the log after the malfunction occurred (while I
should have been headed off to work). Unfortunately, it had been
quickly overwritten and was lost. I've also suggested that logging be
enhanced to prevent this type of situation in the past, if you recall.

No one suggested a 1:1 copy of my work. The code I'm alluding to that
was unwisely discarded consisted of specific state information that was
tracked to enhance both stability and post-mortem analysis. Nor did I
ever state or imply that 'everything after [my changes] was to the
worse'. I'm afraid you're putting words in my mouth that I don't
appreciate here...

Ok, so now Logitech is ostensibly more comfortable based upon your
commentary (not an unreasonable point). Are they now working on these
new issues, whether making logging more useful to facilitate log
feedback from customers by preventing log overwrites or by continuing to
test alarms in 7.4.2? Has that development comfort translated into
alarm robustness?

I'm not going to get further into a personal defense of my work, nor of
my history and expertise in embedded product development. Suffice it to
say that I am not (and was not) guessing when it came to working toward
alarm stability. Logitech as an organization has a lot to learn about
both embedded development and client/server architecture...

It's too bad, really, because I truly believe the Radio could be huge.

This recent discussion in this thread about the software development
process is enlightening. I feel very comfortable staying back at 7.3.3
with my Transporter, Booms and Duet indefinitely given the approach I
see. I believe that installing a later monolithic version will cause
more problems for me than its worth and I don't see a reasonable path
forward at this time. And as for taking on Apple, I think that ship left
