It's interesting that the log has the radio talking to mysqueezebox.com.

I think that I read somewhere that the natural alarm sounds come from
mysqueezebox? Could that be why it goes there?

It's odd enough that an alarm function needs a server at all, but
involving 2 different servers is beyond odd. One would think that a
radio with a computer inside would be smart enough to simulate an alarm
 clock all by itself

Oh sorry - I misinterpreted your logfile. MySqueezebox is indeed just
the source of the alarm-tune.
While one could question if this is the right thing to do - actually it
shouldn't be that bad (except that MySB.com has proved to be unreliable
sometimes). See - if you'd have a normal stream as alarm tune (say a
radio-station) it would also connect to a foreign stream.
As a reference here is the log from my radio (also connected to a local
server, but connecting to a radio stream)

Unfortunately for good (i.e. without fallback alarm) alarm function you
need the following working components:
#1: a robust squeezeboxserver, that sends an alarm event at the right
time (in your failing case 'too late' from the viewpoint of the radio -
most probably because the Radios time was not in Sync to the server)
#2: a robust stream for the alarm-tune (could be a local mp3 on your
local server - most robust, or a stream from the net - I wouldn't
choose MySB.com *g*)
#3: if the stream comes from 'outside', then of course a working
internet-connection.

I do have a local server, so could take care of point #1). Actually #2
+ #3 proved to be very robust for me. In the last month I had a
fallback alarm just once - and that was because the internet was down
(#3).
Thats the curse of modern streaming requirements I guess :)

And thanks to Marcs work I can rely on the fallback alarm if #1,#2,#3
is wrong, so I trust the Radio much more than in the =7.4.1 times.
Of course if anything from #1,#2,#3 isn't reliable one will get very
annoyed because of the loud and disturbing regular fallback-alarm.
But to be honest - I don't think the Radio should be blamed first - it
does a very good job now in not failing to play some tune at all :D -
but one has to see how the 'environmental' points from above can be
made robust.

I´m sad to say that my SbRadio is useless for the moment. I only use it
for streaming internet radio, and it continuously stops the
transmission for some reason. Only way to restart is to pull the
powerplug. Fortunately my SbClassic does not seem to be affected
(yet).
Will have to return the SbR, but what is the use of it since it is
FW-problem? I will get a repaired one back with the same problem...
BUT, it will hopefully alert Logitech... Worst case I will have to
demand a refund.

Radio plays MUCH better with FW 7.4.2, only stops once in a while versus
every couple of hours with 7.5. Now tho, keep getting constant
reminders to upgrade to 7.5. What a pain! Also increased buffer from 3
to 6 as suggested by someone in another thread, but still had one
stoppage yesterday - all of a sudden it's quiet, I look over and the
clock face is showing on the radio.
I'm mainly listening to internet radio using presets and also Pandora,
slacker and others through mysb.com.

I hope someone's working on a fix - on Bugzilla it looks as if they
think this problem has been resolved!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Step forward in iplayer listen again content

2010-04-28 Thread tims31

Hi Triode,

The fast forward responce and speed through programs could be improved
which would be good. At the moment if listening to a three hour long
listen again content pressing forward and then forward again is how to
fast forward but if you miss time the presses the program restarts from
the begining. A quicker fast forward would be an advantage such as
starts slow and gets quicker the longer the button is held down.

A great solution would be to enable say a chapter advance where each
press advances say 10-15 mins but suspect that would need to be enabled
in the broadcast.

Will try and put that forward as a suggestion to the BBC site.

Thanks

This 7.5 upgrade situation is frustrating at best. I have two Squeezebox
radios that performed flawlessly before the forced upgrade. Now, they
lock up frequently, stop playing music after a couple hours, and must
be re-booted many times throughout a given day. I find it unacceptable
that Logitech doesn't acknowledge this issue and communicate that a

customers. Very bad customer service which causes a negative perception

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problem with alarm sound

2010-04-28 Thread davenva

This is an interesting discussion. I've been in the computer HW SW
business for 40 years, working for some of the biggest companies ( own
a small IT company now), so I think that I know systems design.

I can see the approach of using a server for playing radio streams,
music, podcasts, etc, but not for a basic alarm triggering function.
Keep the selected alarm sounds on the radio (fetch it once from a
server when chosen as the sound, if one wants a large library of
sounds). Keep all alarm triggering local to the radio. If the alarm is
a stream for a network source, then go to the server for that (with a
local backup sound available).

Speaking of servers. Why do I have to deal with two servers?! Only 1
SB server should be in play for any single radio. If a customer wants
to host music by running a local SB server, then use that only and
never deal with My Squeezebox. Being a user of a local SB server, I
fail to see why MySqueezebox.com should ever need to come into play for
me.

Keep MySqueezebox.com only for those customers who do not want to deal
with running a local server (which may end up being the mass-market
audience, should the radio catch on as a general consumer product)

On the marketing front, Logitech needs to decide if Squeezebox is going
to be a mass-market consumer product, like radios, TV's, MP3 players, or
just a tech toy for geeks. Someone is going to win the mass-market
consumer space for internet radio/music, but that product will be be
rock-solid easy-to-use, right out of the box. Too much of the
functionality of Squeezebox is hidden and obtained only from digging
through sites like this.

Don't take this criticism wrong - If I didn't like my SB Radio and
didn't think that it was a breakthrough product concept, I wouldn't
bother making these suggestions. Logitech is bobbling the ball right
now - I hope that they don't drop it.

I have been having the stop-play back to clock problem. I use only
mysqueezebox.com so there are no complications from squeezebox server
or my computer. On Tuesday I was listening to C-SPAN Radio most of the
day. It did not drop the connection at all during that time. Today it
pulled that stunt twice, once with Vermont Public Radio and once with
C-SPAN Radio and at a time of day that usually works just fine.

Although I had station's sound stop from time to time before the latest
FW update, the now playing image would stay on. Now when the sound
stops, the clock pops up, just as though I had turned it off manually.
