Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] For those of you thinking about returning your Radio ...

2009-10-19 Thread ccrome2

Guys,
For the most part, it's the same people that brought you the Boom,
Classic, Duet, that brought you the Radio. We do obsess about this
stuff, believe me. Or ask my wife -- or any of our wives. We spend
obscene amounts of time trying to get things right. We're all very
proud of the Radio, although there are some issues we still need to deal
with.

Remember, the Squeezebox Classic (and thus Boom) had several years to
mature to get to the point its at now.

We didn't go the cheap route on just about anything. Well, I guess
button backlights got cut due to cost, but really, there's not much else
(You wouldn't believe how much it costs to make backlit buttons).
Audio didn't take *any* cut at all. Moving to a color LCD is
*definitely* not a cost reducing measure. It's a feature increasing
measure. Adding battery support is definitely not a cost reducing
measure. Once you get a battery, you'll wonder how you got along
without it.

There are certainly some enhancements that we should put in the
software to make things easier and better, but the idea that we are
cutting corners in the design process is simply wrong.

Please, give us a bit of a break, let us fix up the issues that you're
worried about. We're worried about them too. We care.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Home button on Radio unresponsive

2009-10-13 Thread ccrome2

In order to rule out any hardware issues, you can go to
Settings-Advanced-Factory Test-Button Tests.

You need to twiddle all the buttons and spin the knobs to get out of
that menu.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio use as bedside radio/alarm

2009-10-11 Thread ccrome2

FYI, I designed the dimming circuit for the display, and I'm super
paranoid about things keeping me up at night. I made it so that even in
a darkened bedroom, the dimmest setting is just readable. The current
software does auto-dimming, or manual dimming -- you choose. There is
still some optimization that needs to be done on the dimming algorithms,
but it's really pretty good as is. Future software may allow even
dimmer settings.

With all the EU and California and other worldwide regulations, you
won't see many/any new products with linear power supplies -- virtually
everything will use switching power supplies from now on. Most of those
are wide range input, but definitely not all.

So far, our products (the Squeezeboxes) always use wide range input
voltage. Generally from 100V to 230 or 240 V. This was not true of the
old Squeezebox Classic supply, but has been true of all products in the
last 3 years or so.

One of the questions that I have though is regarding the white numbers

alarm display? I've observed that blue is one of the hardest to sleep
with colors and red is one of the easiest to sleep with.

 Thanks.

Good question. I don't think we've really thought about it. I'll
forward this question on to the UI designers to see how hard it is to
change text color. I imagine it's quite simple. It could probably
either be a built-in clock, or a plugin.

 Thanks!

It uses a single stereo DAC, therefore it does not do the subwoofer
mode. It does do the same crossover and bi-amping, which is one of the
most critical parts IMO.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Can I build a battery pack...

2009-09-28 Thread ccrome2

No it won't work. We count on having the monitoring points, and the
temperature sensor. We had a home-made one get *very* hot in the lab,
and since this is a safety issue, we absolutely don't support or
encourage any homebrew batteries, and the devices are smart enough to
detect whether it's homebrew or not.

From truly off: like the Controller, it's more like 45 seconds to f
ully boot. I have an early hardware build, so that might be better in
the final build, but you'll generally want it in off mode so you can
wake it up remotely. In full off mode I think it would take a button
press or a previously scheduled alarm to turn Radio on (like Boom, Radio
is designed to keep track of the next alarm and power up in time even if
 fully off, iiuc).

From full off mode, the alarm will wake you properly. It will boot up
a little early, in time to reconnect with the server, and then alarm you
in time. It will do this when running on the optional batteries too.
