The only local stations worth listening to webcast at something like
64k MP3. It's painful to listen to (it's hard to spend more than a few
minutes on anything less than 192k), so I have a USB tuner on my
Squeezecenter host that streams at 320k -- much better.

It'd be nice to see a citation for that comparison. Who says FM is ~
96k? How'd they decide that?

"HD" in HD Radio does NOT stand for High Definition, it stands for
Hybrid Digital. I expect they shortened the phrase so that people who
care about quality would take them seriously.

Radio works with all Squeezebox remotes, from the old slimp3/sb1 through
the sb3, Boom, and not-yet-released Touch remote.

Some buttons behave a little differently, for instance the "+" button
does different things for Boom than Radio, even when both are using the
same Squeezebox Server 7.4 machine for their music.

Actually, with 7.4.0, this would need to be (or depend on) an applet.
The screensaver settings for Radio are not copied to/from Squeezebox
Server, so a SC/SBS plugin like AutoDim cannot handle this for you. I
opened a bug on this a while back, and it looks like it won't be
resolved until next spring (currently it's targeted for SBS 8.1, and I
expect SBS 8.0 will come out late this year).

Nope. Boom ships with a 12v adapter but Radio is designed for 18v, and
needs 18v to charge the optional battery pack (and presumably you'd void
your warranty if you tried to run it on your 12v Boom adapter).

Ah, sorry. I haven't looked at making a SqueezePlay UI for SyncOptions,
which is what I think is giving you that UI on the older players. As far
as I know, there's no SqueezePlay equivalent for the pushMode API I use

I care. The security model for MySB isn't as good as I'd like
(passwords without https?), and I don't want my players changing
behavior (especially not installing real runs-on-the-player apps!!!)
because some MySB server asked them to. Security for SN/MySB needs to

Some of the wires in the Radio's battery connector apparently are for a

be fun to make a DB9 serial port for Radio, but nobody's provided that

I expect that gross bugs like the power button not working will be
fixed, but unclemat also wrote "it's really bad UE design that remote
functions from previous the older devices are not preserved". It seems
clear to me that Logitech has no intention of making the new players
behave like the old ones (especially touch-to-play, but the change in
how presets are handled also seems deliberate), and I expect that they
also don't intend to make the old players adapt all the new behaviors of
the new players (touch to play, + means more, etc.). If you want Radio
to behave just like your other gear, I think you're out of luck (unless
you are a programmer and want to do a lot of work yourself), and will
need to decide how important that aspect is for you.

Just today I published an updated version of my KidsPlay plugin to my
test repository,
http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/slim7/repodata-test.xml** that allows
you to reprogram any of the 6 Radio preset buttons to do more than just
play presets. Your Radio must be connected to a local Squeezebox Server
machine that has KidsPlay installed in order to do this (I hope to
release an "applet" at some later date that would also work if you were
connected directly to MySqueezebox.com). See this post (and thread) for
more on how you could use KidsPlay to start the sleep timer or do
multiple things like set the volume, start a certain playlist, and then
start the sleep timer:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=441521&postcount=9

If you try this, please let me know how it works for you.

-Peter

** You'd need to add the URL
http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/slim7/repodata-test.xml in the
Additional Repositories area of the Plugins settings page to get the
version that works with Radio, as it's not yet in my "live" repository
that you'd see with the normal "Show all 3rd party plugins" option

3rd party screensavers for the new gear -- Controller, Radio, Touch --
*do* work when connected to MySB; that's an advantage of the
SqueezePlay/SqueezeOS platform. But the screen you see on Radio when an
alarm goes off is not a screensaver. Currently there seems to be no way
for a 3rd party applet to act as an alarm screensaver on Radio.
Hopefully this will improve, just as the extensibility of the
server-side logic for old players improved over the years.

If you're using Squeezebox Server, you can do that with my KidsPlay

See the URL below. If you connect directly to MySqueezebox.com, then I

My SleepFade plugin also works with Radio if you want the sound to fade

The toughest part is finding the URL for what you want to play. Use the
Web UI, navigate to My Apps > Sounds & Effects and click on the name of
the effect you want. That's how I found the URL for Ocean Surf for this
KidsPlay macro that will start playing Ocean Surf at volume 20, start
the sleep timer, display a message telling you it's done so, and
hopefully drop you into the Now Playing screensaver:

POWER 1; STOP; PLAYLIST CLEAR; MIXER VOLUME 20; PLAYLIST PLAY
\"LOOP://WWW.MYSQUEEZEBOX.COM/STATIC/SOUNDS/NATURAL/OCEAN_SURF.MP3\";
SLEEP 1800; DISPLAY \"SLEEPING IN 30 MINUTES\"; BUTTON HOME; BUTTON
NOW_PLAYING

There's no Web or SqueezePlay/Radio interface for the SleepFade
settings, but you could add a couple more commands to the macro to make
sure SleepFade is set the way you'd like it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Improve default "Now Playing" layout

2009-10-16 Thread peterw

I think the new NP screen on Radio looks great. Now I get a little color
& imagery without the goofy shrunken head thumbnail approach. I have no
strong affection for official cover art, and this new NP screen very
smartly uses the cover art to give some visual interest without making
the screen look like the CD page of the Best Buy sale flyer. Nicely
done!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] No "Display" in the Settings Menu (Web UI)?

Related bug: https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11442

I'd really like the ability to configure Controller, Radio ("baby") and
Touch ("fab4") through the web UI, but even my lesser request is
targeted for SBS 8.1, which I expect won't be out until early- to
mid-2010.

I think it's a deliberate design decision, so if you're using it on
your nightstand late at night, you can turn it really low and have it
not be too loud. I haven't seen any numbers from Logitech (and don't
have a SPL meter myself), but Boom's lowest volume is about 24 dB
quieter than Classic & Receiver for just this reason. As long as it's
loud enough in the 50-100 range, is this really a problem?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sleep button

2009-11-04 Thread peterw

Right, "sleep 3600" etc. I'd try
1) Set preset
to a normal playlist/station/song
2) Verify preset works
3) Create macro as something like "sleep 3600; display Sleeping..."
4) Set KidsPlay for that Radio to "KidsPlay routine or normal action"
5) Try the button again

If that doesn't work, try setting the logging level for plugin.KidsPlay
to debug & let me know what you see.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Does VolumeLock plugin work on the Radio?

2009-11-07 Thread peterw

Currently you need to use the SBS web interface to configure VL for
Radio. Also, it doesn't completely prevent volume changes on Radio using
Radio's knob or an IR remote (since Radio lets you change the volume
"locally", without checking with SBS first); in those cases, VL simply
quickly reverts any unacceptable volume changes. I need to write an
"applet" for VL to work as seamlessly on Radio (and Touch) as it does on
SB3.

My early hardware beta running firmware 7.5.0 r7863 (and I should note
Erland & I both have very early betas; the circuitry changed enough on
newer units that the plastic case shape had to change!) always hisses
slightly, whether "on" or "off", about as loud as Erland notes. This
seems independent of the Line In gain setting. It is much, much better
than the hiss on a couple Tivoli Model One radios I tried. The Model
One, despite all the praise it's garnered over the years, has has a hiss
that's audible from 1-2 meters, and is noticeable even when Model One is
playing music!

I think this is likely to be fixed in software, at least hissing when
"off" (and maybe that's why Erland & I see different behavior, maybe
he's running Radio firmware that fixes the off hissing); if Radio isn't
playing anything, including Line In, it should be easy for the firmware
to turn off the amp. IIRC, there was a similar enhancement to the
firmware for Boom after Boom was publicly released. I know of at least
on Radio performance enhancement that hasn't been rolled out yet
specifically because some folks like Erland & I still have the older
hardware. It could well be that the best hiss fix needs newer hardware,
and therefore won't be rolled out for another month or two (?), when all
Radio early access testers have production level hardware.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] preset and favorite bugs w/server & 7.4.1

I think the opposite change is needed; I think Radio should be *less*
intelligent. AFAICT, the preset logic is something like

Code:

Try to keep track of which preset buttons have been assigned

When a preset button is pressed briefly
If there's nothing assigned to that button, do nothing
  Else
  Turn Radio on
Tell the server (SBS or MySB) which button was pressed
SBS/MySB tells Radio what to tune, etc.

So if Radio forgets a preset has been assigned, it does nothing. If the
problem you're seeing is due to Radio somehow forgetting which buttons
have been assigned, then pushing even more logic to Radio won't help;
you need to address the underlying cause of forgetfulness (and if you
fixed that, the current model should work fine).

I think it would be safer to mimic the slim/dumb model of older gear,
e.g.

Code:

Do NOT try to keep track of which preset buttons have been assigned

When a preset button is pressed briefly
Tell the server (SBS or MySB) which button was pressed
SBS/MySB tells Radio to turn on, what to tune, etc.

Right now there are two possible causes for forgotten presets: 1)
SBS/MySB sync messes up what the server thinks the presets should be and
2) Radio forgets that a preset has been assigned. Making Radio dumber
would take the second failure out of the picture. And it would result in
simpler code -- a bunch of Radio/SqueezePlay code could disappear, and
the SBS/MySB side would need only a single line of code added ("if (!
$client->power() )  { $client->execute(['power','1']); }").

Next time this happens to you, try turning Radio "off" with a quick tap
of the power button, and then press the preset. If Radio turns on, then
the problem is in SBS/MySB. If Radio stays powered off, then somehow it
has forgotten, and the bug is more likely in Radio's firmware (though
not necessarily; it's possible that SBS/MySB could be giving it bad info
somehow).

Good point. For this, I think a popup with a big 1-6 number would
suffice, don't you? SBS/MySB could then start playback or push a popup
saying the preset was undefined.

If you run Squeezebox Server on a PC in your home, you can use my
KidsPlay plugin to make any of the 6 numbered buttons start something
like that. For example, see
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69864. You can program
any simple sequence of commands, for instance you could add a command to
ensure the songs play in random order, or add a command to ensure all
the other Squeezeboxes (you won't settle for just one!) turn off, etc.
-- all when you press a single button.

Or use a Squeezebox IR remote (it has a sleep button), or use KidsPlay
to assign one of the 1-6 buttons to be "button sleep".

And I think most Squeezebox owners (sadly) don't even own two
Squeezeboxes.

The trouble here is mainly one of user interface. It's simple if you
always only change the "local" volume (as SC/SBS do now), or if you
always change all synced players' volumes. But how do you -- within the
confines of the Boom, Classic, and Controller buttons & screens -- give
users the choice of either changing the volume on all synced players or
only the local player? Offering both local and group volumes are easy
with touchscreens as on SB Touch and iPod Touch, but not so easy when
you have simpler screens and dedicated volume buttons.

I've thought about adding group volume control to SyncOptions, but the
biggest problems are motivation (in years of owning multiple
Squeezeboxes, this is a feature I've seldom wished for) and the user
interface question. But maybe I'm wrong about the UI; maybe some folks
here really would like volume control to *always* affect all synced
players. Is that right?? You'd never want to only adjust the "local"
volume?

See my last comment. If there's no easy way to switch between "local"

to be difficult to change only the local player's volume.

Volume-hold won't work since that means change volume quickly, but
that's a nice idea for an ip3k UI using my ContextMenu plugin. I
wouldn't bother with a Jive UI, as my understanding of the core/jive
context menu in 7.4 is that it's too dumb/primitive (iiuc, 7.4 jive
context menus depend on line-items, not player state).

I hear that! SB Touch should seize this opportunity to make the gear
more zone/sync-friendly. Here's a UI suggestion for Radio: press the
volume knob (which in 7.4 toggles the mute state) and get a screen like

Code:

Volume for synced players
  xx---
  Volume for this player
  xx---
  Volume for Den
  xxx--
  Volume for Kitchen
  -

Use the nav wheel to select a line, and the volume knob to change the
volume of the selected line. Mute is toggled by pressing a knob while a
line is highlighted, so you could easily mute any or all players. Use
three different colors for the volume indicators: one for the whole sync
group, one for the local player, and the other color for each of the
other players. Let users decide whether simple volume knob turns (i.e.,
using the volume knob on any other screen) control local or all synced
players' volumes. If the knob normally controlled the whole sync group,
the first line should be "Volume for synced players". So your typical
volume control would just require turning the volume knob, and the other
normal case would require you to tap the volume knob once to bring up
the special screen, nav down once, and then use the volume knob. Muting
whatever the volume knob normally controls would require two taps. The
"Volume for synced players" indicator would show the average volume of
all players in the sync group.

This should be very doable in an applet. Any takers?

Hah. I was just writing that the remote does have some use with Radio.
It's worthless, I'll admit, for navigating onscreen text, but for
launching presets, skipping tracks, adjusting the volume, pausing,
turning Radio off, etc., a remote is still nice to have.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Kidsplay: different behavior on same preset for separate Radios?

2009-12-19 Thread peterw

I'll give it some thought. My initial goal with KidsPlay was making a
kid-ready IR remote, and I wanted the kid's remote to do the same thing
on all players, thus the global configuration. But I understand where
you're coming from.

There are three obvious approaches:

- per-player macros for everything. Either lots of copy-and-paste or
perhaps using SettingsManager to make some buttons uniform
- combination of global and per-player macros. Use the
player-specific settings for a given button when available, otherwise
  the global settings.
- a new conditional syntax for KidsPlay, so you could have macros
  like

Code:

if::Kitchen: playlist play /something.m3u
if::Bedroom: playlist play /anotherthing.m3u
if::Bedroom: OTHERS: power 0

Do you have a strong preference? I think I tend to prefer the second
approach (offer global and per-player macros) -- the global page might
show you what attached Squeezeboxes have individual macros that override
any specific global macro.

What you describe is not "static IP" but a "DHCP reservation". There
have been posts on this forum about editing /etc/network/interfaces on a
SB Controller for a true static IP configuration; it should be pretty
much the same process on SB Radio.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio architecture question for Slim developers

2009-12-21 Thread peterw

Wait, wait, let's keep talking architecture!

I thought SqueezePlay, like Squeezebox Server, was deliberately
single-threaded and applet developers did not need to worry about thread
safety. Are you saying that a smart developer could actually use threads
(e.g. I could write an RS232 amp interface for Touch that used a
separate thread to prevent messing up the SqueezePlay UI responsiveness
while waiting a half a second for serial port data -- instead of moving
the RS232 stuff into a separate process on SqueezeOS)?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Kidsplay: different behavior on same preset for separate Radios?

2009-12-23 Thread peterw

I thought about waiting until the 25th to post this, but I expect I
won't have much time to do additional testing, so here goes...

If you're game, I just posted a version 2.4.0 to my *test* repository,
http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/slim7/repodata-test.xml, that implements
the second option. If you set a player-specific macro for a given
button, KidsPlay will use that in place of any globally-defined macro
for that button. (Sorry, I didn't add an "enable" checkbox; you'll need
to wipe out any player-specific macro if you want to switch back to the
global macro for that button.)

In both "global" and "player-specific" editing modes, it will indicate
if there are macros defined in the other scope -- e.g., if editing for
one player, the pulldown will have a "+" next to any item defined
globally, and when you select that button, you'll see an "all players"
link you can hover your mouse over to see the global definition. When
editing global definitions, you should see the same "+" if any currently
connected player has its own definition, and if you select a button,
you'll see a list of all players that define their own macros for that
button, with the same "tooltip" feature for seeing what each player
defines for that button.

You can also assign descriptions for each button macro, and these
descriptions appear in the pulldown, so you can more quickly remember
what you programmed the button to do. It's bugged me for a while now
that I keep forgetting which of the 0-9 buttons does what on my kid's
remote. :-) If you don't give a macro a description, the pulldown will
flag that button with a "*" so at least you know that you've assigned
something to that button.

I've only tested this very, very lightly, and would appreciate your
testing & feedback.

Thanks,

Peter

A number of us who own Controllers saw significant improvement in
reliability after reconfiguring them to use truly static IPs. In my
case, I have two, and both had reliability problems until I configured
*one* of the two to use a static IP. They've both been fine ever since.

DHCP reservation *should* be a viable alternative to static IP
(especially if you can set very long lease expiration times), but
unfortunately it's not always the case. For Controller, I suspect that
some power saving code may complicate matters -- perhaps when waking up
from a power-saving mode it wants to renew its lease? I don't know, I
never bothered debugging at the packet level since configuring a static
IP was easier than debugging and apparently solved the problem.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox radio too loud

2009-12-24 Thread peterw

You could try my SyncOptions plugin version 2.1.30 or newer from my
*test* repository,
http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/slim7/repodata-test.xml. This version
adds a new option, "relative volume sync". To use it, do NOT set the
core synchronize volume option, but enable the SyncOptions "relative
volume synchronization" option. As you change volume on any given
player, SyncOptions will make proportionate volume changes on the others
it's synced with.

There's an additional setting you can tweak -- how many seconds to wait
after joining a sync group before volume changes affect all players.
Imagine you have Player A and Player B synced, and then you make Player
C join that sync group. This user-configurable delay time gives you as
many seconds as you'd like to tweak Player C's volume without affecting
the volume on A or B, as C is likely to be either too quiet or too loud
when it first joins the sync group. After the specified delay, you
should see a message on the player or Controller display reminding you
that any volume change from that point on will affect all players in
that sync group.

Please let me know what you think of it. I've tested it a bit on a 7.3
system but not on a 7.4 system with Radio (laziness, sorry).

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox radio too loud

2009-12-24 Thread peterw

Pippin, thanks for sharing your algorithm. Mine's a straighforward
linear/proportional model based on the N/100 volume level -- when a
player joins a sync group, I note each player's volume. When any volume
changes, I calculate the new / original ratio, calculate new volumes for
sync peers, and change their volumes if needed.

If any player would go over 100, I refresh my "orginal" volumes. That's
the best I came up with to deal with this use case: A at 40, B at 60. A
jumps to full volume. B should go to 150, but that's impossible, so B
goes to 100, also. Now somebody decreases the volume of B to 95. What
happens to A?

If I had treated B as having a relative synced volume of 150, then
switching to 95 would be a ~34% decrease. Even with your model, as I
understand it, you'd average -34% and -5% and decide to decrease A by
about 20 clicks just because B became a little bit quieter.

The tradeoff for my model of recalculating when any peer hits 100 is
that if you really turn the volume up, you end up with the players
pretty much back at the old Logitech model of each player having exactly
the same volume. But I rarely crank any player to full volume, so this
is a tradeoff I'm not too worried about.

What I have now certainly isn't perfect (and I just realized there's
probably a bug in how it handles a player joining an existing sync group
if the existing sync group has already taken advantage of the relative
volume sync), but I do find myself appreciating it more than I expected
when I'm syncing players in adjacent rooms.

Ah. What happens if you try to use the master volume in my A=40, B=60
scenario to turn A to max volume? Does A stop somewhere around 60 or 70
unless you use its individual slider?

I don't see that. If you turn A or B to 0 in my scenario, they still
have the same "original" volumes. Turn A to 0 and both do go to 0, but
if you then increase A to 10, B would go to 15 (new A volume 10 /
original A volume 40 * original B volume 60 = new B volume 15). While my
first algorithm *did* have a stuck-at-zero flaw, that algorithm never
left my laptop! (Actually there is a way to get stuck-at-zero still, but
only if Player C joins the group while A and B are at 0, or close to it.
I see how your algorithm would help in that case.)

envy all of you with fancy Unix-based touchscreen smart-phones.

Yes, right. SyncOptions hooks itself into SBS so it's aware of every
sync/unsync and volume change, so this is not bad at all.

Ah, of course.

Is there a way my plugin could tell if it was iPeng that was changing
the volume? It wouldn't make any sense for SyncOptions to do relative
volume syncing if the user is using a controller like iPeng that handles
that already and already has a way to explicitly change one player's
volume, but I could see SyncOptions users wanting relative volume
changes if they turned the knob on a Radio or Boom. With SBS 7.4, the
mixer volume CLI command supports tags (SqueezePlay/Radio/Touch use
them), so it's conceivable that iPeng could add an "ipeng" tag...

Funny, I only learned of the unlocked Euro iPhones a week after I was
in France (first trip from the US to Europe in a while). Just as well,
though, as word is that Orange France sells iPhones that are only
unlocked enough to accept other French SIM cards. :-/

If you use Squeezebox Server, you can remap one of the 6 numbered
buttons with my KidsPlay plugin. You'd use a macro like *button sleep*
if you want to cycle through the various normal sleep times (end of
song, 15m, 30m, etc.).

You can also make the button do more complex things like start a
certain playlist at a certain volume and then start the sleep timer:

Yeah, SqueezePlay in 7.4 uses "seq" tags, I think to help deal with any
contention between local and server-based volume changes (Radio's volume
knob changes its volume immediately and notifies SBS after the fact). I
think it should be

Code:

  mixer volume 95 ipeng:1

I'll get back to you when I get that figured out and tested. Thanks for

Your best bet for an explantion, if support doesn't give one, is to use
bugs.slimdevices.com, but one of the developers (Ben) noted that many
developers are on vacation until after New Year's, and at least one of
the core Radio/SqueezeOS developers (Richard) has moved to a different

It involves some client logic -- the seq_no (not seq) tag value is sent
back to the client in a SlimProto command (this is from Squeezebox2.pm,
which is used for SqueezePlay clients, too):

Code:

  if (defined($client->sequenceNumber())) {
  $data = pack('NNCCNNN', $oldGain, $oldGain, $dvc, $preamp, $newGain,
$newGain, $client->sequenceNumber());
  }
  else {
  $data = pack('NNCCNN', $oldGain, $oldGain, $dvc, $preamp, $newGain, $newGain);
  }
  $client->sendFrame('audg', \$data);

> Well, it makes a lot of sense to me.

The CLI format *00:04:20:01:02:03 mixer volume 50 ipeng:1* worked as
well as I could expect in 7.3 and 7.4 -- in 7.4 I see the tag and can
respect it, but in 7.3 I cannot. I just pushed a new test version of
SyncOptions that refuses to do relative volume sync for any CLI command
with an "ipeng" tag with value "1".

Unless the player is synced with others -- Stop and Pause always affect
the whole sync group. Power off only affects the individual player
(unless you have your setup configured to synchronize the power of all
synced players).

Yes, it can be at first.

I like your suggestion about using the alarm button to check without
turning radio on (and possibly resuming playback), but I think that
could take a lot of work, especially allowing you to change the
settings. Checking the alarm (currently) means navigating menus, and
navigating menus (currently) means turning the unit "on", potentially
triggering playback.

What if pressing the alarm button when "off"/standby caused the screen
to display information about the very next alarm for about 5 seconds --
things about the alarm like the time & day, the volume, maybe even the
selected playlist? Maybe also the current time and day?

Thanks. There was already a bug/enhancement request about making the
alarm button do something when Radio is off, so I added a note about
your concern & my suggestions to that ticket. I would suggest you at
least set up a Bugzilla account and add yourself to the CC list for that

Since Radio has both WiFi and Ethernet, you should be able to either
1) connect Radio to the hotel WiFi and use ethernet between Radio and a
laptop/netbook so you could use the laptop/netbook to deal with the
portal (using Linux iptables NAT) -- would require an enhancement to
Radio, see https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11150
2) connect the laptop/netbook to the hotel WiFi and use ethernet
between Radio and the laptop/netbook so the laptop/netbook could share
its connection with Radio via ethernet

The second option is probably better if you want to take your laptop to
other parts of the hotel, and should work with the current Radio
firmware.

However, as far as I know traffic between Radio and SBS or
MySqueezebox.com is entirely unencrypted. I don't know of anyone who's
bothered to create "cloning" software for Squeezeboxes, but it's likely
that anyone else in the hotel could "sniff" your Radio's MAC and UUID
and at anytime afterward impersonate you at MySqueezebox.com -- giving
them the power to mess with your favorites, saved stations, Facebook
info, etc. Squeezebox, Squeezebox Server, and MySqueezebox.com are
ill-suited for use over "open wireless" networks, in my opinion. If the
WiFi service is good enough, you may be able to resolve most concerns by
using an encrypted tunnel back to your home network much as lrossouw
did.

That's unfortunate, and a little surprising. I thought UDP was only
used for "discovery" of servers, so I'd expect the ability to manually
enter an IP or hostname (SqueezePlay should have no trouble with
hostnames, at least simple DNS names if not winbind) and just play the
music.

I don't think the two ideas are in conflict. Allowing a user to press
the alarm button to get "Next Alarm" info would help users who have
"screen dark" screensavers or choose other screensavers that don't show
the alarm time (a number of 3rd-party screensavers for the old gear,
including one I wrote, don't bother showing any alarm indicator; I
expect the same will be true on the new players).

I think you may be talking about me, but I'm merely an AutoDim user who
turned into a de facto maintainer because I couldn't live without it --
AutoDim has had a number of maintainers over the years, and is a success
story for Free Software licensing (and a reason why Logitech needs to
address bug 14194). That said, there's another bug that's actually more
relevant to AutoDim on Radio (and Touch) -- number '11442'
(https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11442). Unfortunately many
of the settings for Controller, Radio, and Touch exist only on the
Squeezebox itself. If the brightness and screensaver settings for Radio
were available in Squeezebox Server, it would probably be pretty easy to
adapt AutoDim for Radio and Touch -- at least for those of us running
Squeezebox Server. Bug 14194 is more of an impediment for
MySqueezebox.com users, and other things that some of us developers
would like to do.

That's tough for eap's case where you don't want to trigger resumption
of playback. Plus, as I said in the bug ticket, I think the current
alarm settings menus need help. Alarms should be listed chronologically,
not in the order they were initially set up.

I think there's hope for that -- recent Touch firmwares have included
an experimental button remapping feature. I don't expect it to be as
flexible as KidsPlay, but it's also true that I should be able to write
a KidsPlay "applet" to run on Radio and allow remapping any button to do
complex things. I've been waiting on bug 14194 in hopes that Logitech
will free up more source and I won't have to do as much work. :-)

I don't know of any way to do that with KidsPlay. On Boom you could
probably use a sequence of 'button' commands like

Code:

button browse; button home; button down; button down; button down; button
right

but in SBS 7.4.2, Radio doesn't respond to 'button' CLI commands. That
doesn't surprise me much (though it is disappointing), as normally
button presses, especially for navigating lists, would be handled by the
software running on Radio itself. About the best you could probably do
now is use the Settings > Advanced > Beta Features > Shortcuts to remap
a button to act like the Favorites button.

If it's a JP1-capable remote, you can program it to send the official
Slim Devices / Squeezebox codes with a JP1 configuration like the one I
posted in this thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63757

If it's a universal learning remote & you have access to a Squeezebox
remote, you can teach it.

I have not checked to see if Radio respects the old JVC DVD codes the
way the older gear (like Boom) does.

I'm not aware of any. I expect some of the old commands will do next to
nothing on the new gear like Radio and Touch. There's been a change in
mindset at Logitech. The old gear was treated much more like dumb
terminals, and plugins and CLI clients had more ability to completely
control the hardware. The new gear is designed to be more autonomous,
with more loosely federated households of players. I expect you'll just
have to try things out. You might also want to file a ticket at
bugs.slimdevices.com -- the API specs should clarify when commands
behave differently on different Squeezeboxes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] found an interesting bug

I think that's an SBS bug. I get a complaint like
Can't use an undefined value as an ARRAY reference at
server/Slim/Buttons/Common.pm line 649 -- and that line is

Code:

my $visModes = scalar @{ $prefs->client($client)->get('visualModes') };

--code that assumes that the player has a preference named
'visualModes' that is a Perl array. My Radio has no such preference on
the server side. I suspect this is one of those commands that just
doesn't work with new players -- and doesn't fail very gracefully,
either. :-(

I hope you mean to say that you think the button command should only be

Right?

Having a button command as part of the IP3K IR processing chain is very
useful for customizing the behavior through plugins. I'd hate to see it
disappear.

Has anyone filed a ticket at bugs.slimdevices.com on this? I did not
find one. It looks like busybox doesn't include a proper NTP client, so
one should be added (an NTP client would be better than frequent
MySB/SBS time syncs, IMO): http://busybox.net/tinyutils.html

And one downside to a real NTP client is that it NTP uses its own
protocol. With the SBS/MySB comet polling, as long as the Squeezebox can
see a Music Library, then it has enough connectivity to get time
updates. A true NTP client (one that understands & maintains drift
information) would be far better for keeping accurate time, but might
involve more calls to Logitech support. If the next version of busybox
includes an NTP client, I think it'd be great for Logitech to compile it
in, but I could understand sticking with the SBS/MySB poll technique for
regular users.

Most people want a single "household" mysb account so everyone can
access the same paid content (Rhapsody, Napster, etc.). As I understand
it, Logitech planned to support multiple Facebook accounts per mysb
account, but Facebook asked them to limit it to 1 per mysb account.
Hopefully a 3rd party Facebook applet/plugin will appear that makes this
better, as Logitech's hands are kinda tied here. :-(

Sorry, I forgot. That's right, but it can be used to start playing a
random song mix with one button press, including making sure the right
genres are included or excluded.

Take a look at KidsPlay. It's not super user-friendly, but you can
pretty much do that with KidsPlay, following the recipes included with
it. The only significant limitation is from Squeezebox Server -- all
players use the same Genre selection for Random Mix. So if somebody in
the bedroom started a Jazz mix and then somebody in the family room
started a Childrens' mix, when the first set of Jazz songs finished, the
bedroom would probably start playing kids' music. I don't know if anyone
has opened an enhancement request for per-player random mix genres or
not. I suspect Erland's plugins may also provide an alternative to
Random Mix that wouldn't have that "competing genre" problem that Random
Mix has.

After it's shut down, a short press of the power button will boot it up

Whether they're "cheap and nasty" I cannot say. Certainly nicer than

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] plugins for fixed sleep timer and main menuitem order changer?

2010-03-02 Thread peterw

1) If you use a run Squeezebox Server locally, KidsPlay can map a preset
button to start a sleep timer (and set volume, load a playlist, set
shuffle mode, etc.).
2) Not any more. Hopefully a future Squeezebox Server release will
restore this capability.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-03-04 Thread peterw

BTW, all the battery links I've looked at in this thread have been for
basic NiMH cells, but word from a Logitech engineer is that the official
battery pack uses Low Self-Discharge NiMH cells. From what I understand
about NiMH (also having used them casually for years), you want LSD
cells if you're going to leave your Radio unplugged, or even plugged in
but "fully off" (in which case the batteries aren't being charged) for
weeks or months at a time, so the combination of self-discharge and the
very slight power drain of the microcontroller won't drain your
batteries so low that they can't be revived. Even with LSD cells, you'll
want to avoid leaving your Radio "off" for many months at a time, but
using LSD cells would buy you an extra margin of safety.

I've filed an enhancement request to make Radio a bit more intelligent
about keeping batteries from going flat if it's left "off" but plugged
in, but I don't know if/when that enhancement might be added. Since
Logitech is using LSD cells, Radio probably doesn't need to be turned on
as often as they've suggested, so there probably aren't as many
customers at risk of dead batteries as I first feared.

Hold the power button for 2 seconds and Radio will shut down (the
SqueezePlay/SqueezeOS software will shut down), not just go into the
"off" screensaver mode. When "fully off" like this, I understand the
battery does not charge, even if Radio is plugged into a live AC outlet.
I expect this is because the code controlling charging probably relies
on SqueezeOS.

Have you looked at KidsPlay? It only works if you're running Squeezebox
Server locally, but you can use it to kick off random mix, even
set/clear genres, set the volume level, etc.

If you're running Squeezebox Server, my KidsPlay plugin will let you do
just that. You need to use my test repository
(http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/slim7/repodata-test.xml) in order to
get version 2.5.3 which includes the ability to 'run scripts on the

of a macro.

That's plenty of current for Radio. You have to play Radio quite loud
to even approach half that level.

Yeah, that could be pretty cool. Pipe TTS sound to aplay via ssh,
pause playback via CLI or Perl code if you want to only hear the TTS.

You need to
1) Set kidsplay to normal
2) Assign a normal playable song, station, favorite, etc to the button
and confirm that works
3) Then you can set kidsplay to handle that button
If that doesn't work, please try A) disabling MySqueezebox.com sync
(some Radio owners report that as causing problems, though it sounds
like most of the MySB setting/alarm sync problems have been fixed -- are
you running 7.4.2?) and B) setting the plugin.KidsPlay logging to Debug
to see what's logged when you press the Radio's button.

Yes, that sounds right & good.

In the Web interface, go to Settings > Advanced > Logging. You should
see a bunch of categories. Change the value for plugin.KidsPlay to
Debug, then click Apply and try your preset button again. In the Web UI,
click one of the SqueezeCenter Log File links to see the last part of
the log -- you should see something like
Code:

kidsplayexec executing wget-nc
http://192.168.1.20/onderbedaan.php

-- with tabs between each of the arguments.

Hey, someone else is using my Denon plugin? I had no idea! No, if
you're seeing the KidsPlay settings, it should be installed fine. Next
guess I'd have is that you may need to use the full path to wget, e.g.
Code:

kidsplayexec xx /usr/local/bin/wget -nc
http://192.168.1.20/onderbedaan.php

BTW, I do see a bug in kidsplayexec in 2.6.0 that shouldn't affect you
-- looks like it refuses to run simple commands (commands without
additional arguments).

Nice. Much more impressive than my fiddling through menus to turn a
table lamp on. :-)

To show text, just add another CLI command in your KidsPlay macro,
e.g.

Code:

display "Turning the lights red..." ;
  kidsplayexec /usr/bin/wget -O /dev/null -t 1
http://192.168.1.20/onderbedaan.php

would display a pop-up menu on that Radio just before executing wget.

Let's stop this speculation right now -- Radio does have this
capability. Like most electronic devices, Radio is never truly fully
powered off -- a tiny, very low power microcrontroller is always running
when there's power (battery or AC), even when the SqueezeOS and
SqueezePlay software that handle networking, display, and audio are shut
down (when Radio appears to be "fully off"). Radio's microcontroller can
wake Radio up at a scheduled time, and the SqueezePlay software ensures
that the microcontroller will wake Radio before the next scheduled
alarm. Since you can only schedule an alarm when Radio is "on" (and, if
using a Controller or web browser or device like iPod + iPen, connected
to SBS or MySB), SqueezePlay should always schedule the microcontroller
to wake Radio up in time.

Make sure you're using MySB or running SBS 7.4.2 and file a bug on that
-- it's supposed to wake up. How early are you shutting down Radio?
IIRC, it's supposed to wake up 20 minutes early (great for overnight
shutdowns) -- but bad if the code doesn't account for powering down less
than 20 minutes before the alarm.

Grr, yeah, there seems to be a bug here. Looks like the SqueezePlay
code deliberately unschedules the wakeup when you power Radio down. Not
good.

Actually it's supposed to wake up 3 minutes early, but it doesn't do
that if you manually power it down. I don't have a battery, so I can't
test the auto-shutdown scenario. Bug filed, patch submitted:

Maybe, but I think if you don't want alarms to fire, then you should
disable them (either individually, or using the global alarms enabled
option). I guess we'll see what Logitech says, and maybe I'll publish a
patch if they say the current behavior is intentional.

It's just broadcasting UDP packets -- as long as the Squeezebox and
server are on the same subnet (as in 99% of home networks), why wouldn't
it work?

Right, the receiving/asleep machine needs a wired connection. Most
folks recommend using wired ethernet to connect the SBS host to the
wireless access point, in which case a wireless Squeezebox should be
able to use WOL to wake the server up. But, right, if the server uses a
wireless network connection, that won't work.

I cannot confirm how Radio behaves with a battery, as I don't have a
battery. In fact, my Radio cannot take a battery -- it's an early
hardware version (I'm a lucky beta tester).

Yeah, I hear WOL has some problems in 7.4.x, but I have not run SBS on
a WOL-capable server in years.

[SlimDevices: Radio] own a Radio and battery? Please test this alarm behavior

2010-03-22 Thread peterw

with SBS 7.4.2, 7.4.3/daily, or 7.5.0 and either the official battery or
a home-made battery

1) make sure the battery is fairly well charged
2) set an alarm for 30 minutes after the current time
3) unplug Radio from the wall
4) after 20 minutes, Radio should shut down to conserve battery
5) see if the alarm sounds at the scheduled time

Currently Radio will *not* sound an alarm if you turn it off by
pressing the power button (by design). I'd like to know if the alarm
will sound if the power goes out overnight, or if "auto shutdowns" also
effectively squelch scheduled alarms.

Thanks!
