Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-28 Thread gibbs

Just to add to the above post, a lot of times only the top or bottom
half of a receptacle will be switched. Make sure you try both sockets.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-22 Thread TiredLegs

How about rewiring the power outlet? In many cases, a switched outlet
can be converted to always-on by changing one wire connection in the
outlet box. If an unswitched wire is present in the outlet box, this
only takes a few minutes. If an unswitched wire is not present, an
electrician could easily rewire the light switch so it doesn't switch
off the outlets. *TO AVOID ELECTRIC SHOCKS, ALWAYS TURN OFF THE CIRCUIT
BREAKER BEFORE REMOVING THE FACEPLATE OF ANY ELECTRICAL OUTLET. IF YOU
ARE UNSURE OF WHAT YOU'RE DOING, HAVE AN ELECTRICIAN DO IT.*

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-12 Thread toby10

To confirm JJZolx's comments, my Radio performs exactly as prescribed.

No matter what the off state it always reconnects to my WiFi network.
This is using WPA2+AES and a hidden SSID. You should be broadcasting
yours.

When yours does not reconnect is the WiFi icon blue or red (I presume
red)?
What happens if you reboot the router with the Radio already connected?
Same issue? Or does the Radio correctly connect after a router
reboot?
Is their SSID a unique name? Maybe it is initially attempting to
connect to a neighboring WiFi?

[SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-11 Thread HowardK

I just purchased an SBR for my elderly parents, hoping it would provide
a fool-proof listening experience. My initial impressions, and
comments in this forum, have me wondering. But if I can solve this one
problem, I think it could work for them.

The SB is plugged into a wall socket controlled by a wall switch. In
fact *all* sockets in that room are controlled by the switch... go
figure! So the room lights, along with the radio, are powered off
regularly. It's impractical to run an extension cord from a
non-switched outlet. When powered on again, the SB requires navigating
the menus to Choose Network among theirs and several others it's
picking up in the neighborhood. It's also impractical to run a (very)
long network cable for a hard-wired connection. So, is there a way to
force the choice of a specific wireless network at hard power-on and
avoid navigating the menus?

I should note that I'm computer-savy, so using something like remote
log-in is fine as long as it provides a permanent solution to the
problem.

It should automatically log in again to the same network.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-11 Thread HowardK

It does log on to the same network after a *soft* power-off and on
(using the power button), but always prompts to Choose Network after
a *hard* power-off (equivalent to unplugging it). Oh, and I did
consider getting a batter, but apparently they're not available anytime
soon.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-11 Thread JJZolx

A battery isn't likely to help your problem. When the Radio is on
battery power and is idle it will hard power off by itself after 20(?)
minutes to save the battery from draining completely. When the Radio is
in soft power off (standby) it's never disconnected from the network.

I just pulled the battery out of mine and did a couple of hard power
offs, and even pulled the plug. It always comes back up connected to
the network (there are other wifi networks around) and displays the
Home menu.

Is the network that the Radio connects to password protected? I could
maybe see that if it's not, then it might not automatically reconnect
and would instead prompt you.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-11 Thread HowardK

Thanks for the observation about the battery. Now I don't feel so bad
not being able to get one!

The network is encrypted, but i configured the SB with the password.
However, it's a hidden network, in that it doesn't broadcast it's
SSID (so that is also configured in the SB network settings). It does
display the network name along with other networks even after a hard
power-off, so it's clearly remembering that information, but just not
using it after a power cycle.

I'll clarify the behaviour.

After a soft power-off/on, it *does* remember the last network and
begins playing when the Play button is pressed.

After a hard power-off/on, it's stuck in the home menu with Now
Playing highlighted, but pressing the big dial, or the play button, or
any of the presets just results in a beep and the menu remaining at
the same place. The only thing I can do is navigate to Settings /
Advanced / Networking and then reselecting the network name.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Force Choose Network at hard power-on?

2011-03-11 Thread JJZolx

I'd try a couple of things:

- When this happens next time, open a web browser and see if the
server sees the Radio. That would at least tell you whether the Radio
is reconnecting to the network and to the SB server. If so, you should
also be able to play music on the Radio from the web browser. I'm not
sure that it will suggest a fix, but it might give you more
  information to go on.

- Unhide the network SSID. It offers no additional security. You
should be using WPA/WPA2 security (not WEP) and a fairly long
  passphrase.

If unhiding the SSID doesn't make a difference, then I'd also try doing
a factory reset. Never hurts to start over from scratch.
