Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume pot faulty
Same here - I feared I'd need to replace the encoder, but it turned out to be much easier. This morning, I decided to fix my microwave, which had a non-working encoder. I'd always assumed it was optical, but a Youtube clip suggested it was physical and that opening up the encoder and cleaning it would fix things. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to open the encoder, so I simply sprayed Servisol contact cleaner on it, rotated the shaft, cleaned, and re-assembled - all fully working. Emboldened by this, I went to attack my Squeezebox Radio this afternoon. Discovered that I didn't even need to disassemble it, I simply pulled off the volument knob, sprayed, rotated, cleaned, replaced knob. All now fab - let's see if it's a long lasting fix. I get the impression that quite a few items like this have grease applied to some moving parts that, with age, migrates to the contacts, attracts crud, and stops them working. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume pot faulty
Thanks for the replies. The remote works fine. But I listen to the radio in bed with headphones and any sleepy attempt to manipulate the remote usually ends with me dropping it on the floor. The ease of manipulating the physical controls of the SBR in the dark was what clinched it for me in the first place and is why I have no wish to replace it. The nearest equivalent I can find is the Sangean Wfr-27/28/29 range as they have 5 presets but they're a bit top heavy and I'm sure they'd just tip over if used in bed. And anyway, who wants to dump a working squeezebox now the iPlayer is working again (thanks all involved). The Sangean/Roberts still can't do Listen Again, according to what Roberts told me this week. Is there any maintenance possible to improve a poor connection perhaps? I find if I tug on the knob very hard it reacts much better. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume Radio
It's not really weird at all, since digital can be just as much all over the place as analog when it comes to volume. Consider CDs, which are digital, but vary tremendously in volume (google loudness wars). The SBS replaygain settings depend on the presence of replaygain tags. This works fine with properly tagged music from your own collection, but very few internet radio stations provide replaygain info, which is why you're not noticing any effect on your radio. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85233 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

What's your qualification in such matters? We hear on a Logarithmic scale. We have had Log pots in radios since they were commercially available. The SB Touch is linear. Well for a start, I know how it's supposed to work. A fixed-track pot/fader and an accelerated rotary encoder are fundamentally different things. The fact is that the vol control encoder response is accelerated, so the faster you turn it the bigger the vol increase/decrease. This point alone renders the real-world (ie in-use as perceived by the user) response curve neither log or lin in the traditional sense, since for a given rotational angle on a trad pot the response will always vary by a set (log or lin) amount, whereas a rotary encoder's effect for a given rotational angle varies according to the speed of rotation... Secondly, each individual step between 0-100 is in fact a shift of +0.5dB... not percentages, but decibels... you know, the logarithmic ones... So, the unaccelerated response is linear on a log/lin (ie dB to SB volume reading value) scale. If you want to turn it loudly quickly, turn the knob quickly. If you want very precise control over the lower volume range - which is CRITICAL for the bedside radio use-case, turn it slowly. This is almost impossible to do with a conventional log pot as it lacks the necessary resolution at the lower end (unless you get one of the special taper variants). With regard to unaccelerated volume the SB behaves exactly like a precision 0.5dB stepped attenuator... or indeed like my $10k pre-amp... This was hammered to death in Beta testing for both Boom and Radio. The Boom and Radio curves are slightly different from the other SB's IIRC. If you turn the knob quickly enough you can go from muted to full volume in exactly 2 180 degree twists of the encoder. But bottom line, this is not something wrong with your system or settings. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77502 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

I appreciate the help. I was hoping the alleviate the issue, but it's great knowing that I haven't mixed up things on my end. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume Control in Erland's Custom Clock Screensaver?
Erland- Thanks for the reply. The problem was when playing. I have since upgraded SBS to Version: 7.4.2 - r29167. I haven't noticed the problem since... not sure if it is related to the software, or was just a transient problem. I was running an older v7.4.1 SBS at the time. If it happens again, I'll post again. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70995 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

tcutting;482033 Wrote: I just got a Radio. I setup the while playing screensaver to be erland's custom clock. I noticed that while that screensaver was active, the volume knob doesn't seem to work. I haven't had a chance to try other screensavers to see if that's the way they work as well. Is this expected behaviour? I like having the volume knob on the Radio, but it's irritating when it doesn't do anything! Is this when the player is playing ? It works perfectly on my Radio, when I turn the volume knob the Custom Clock screen saver is deactivated and the volume is changed. I'm using the 7.4.1 r7915 firmware version. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) (Install my plugins through Extension Downloader) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library, Title Switcher and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70995 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume
I made some adjustments. I still have the SB on my nightstand. I wired it to my stereo using the headphone jack. When I want to listen to it LOUD, I just hook up the headphone jack. Other times, I just disconnect it and listen to it normally. I know this may sound dumb, but it works for what I want. Thanks to all who posted. :) -- cecilialuna cecilialuna's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33648 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69987 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

I like what you're thinking Pippin! To have different players in sync keep their relative volumes even when the ramp is different would be fab! Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume
cecilialuna;474160 Wrote: Ok, is it just my SB radio, or it standard...the volume is really low. I know it's not a boombox, but still, in order for me to really hear it on the other side of the room, the volume has to be 50 or above. Is this a problem for anyone else? I think it's a deliberate design decision, so if you're using it on your nightstand late at night, you can turn it really low and have it not be too loud. I haven't seen any numbers from Logitech (and don't have a SPL meter myself), but Boom's lowest volume is about 24 dB quieter than Classic Receiver for just this reason. As long as it's loud enough in the 50-100 range, is this really a problem? -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim AllQuiet BlankSaver ContextMenu FuzzyTime KidsPlay KitchenTimer PlayLog PowerCenter/BottleRocket SaverSwitcher SettingsManager SleepFade StatusFirst SyncOptions VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69987 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Volume
I had the same thoughts on my Boom. Currently its on the nightstand and 20-25 is good...mainly cause its right by my head. I moved it to the kitchen, which is where it will go once I buy some Radios, and to just hear it across the kitchen it needed to be at 50-55. It concerned me as I wondered what the average safe operating volume is on a Boom. If I need to crank it to 70 to be heard, is that ok? The high numbers I think is what scares us. :) -- cornflakeguy cornflakeguy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69987 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
