Me too.

This was my last carbonium bike (likely ever):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/376251481/

It was a very nice bike, and I don't have anything bad to say about it,
except that it didn't quite fit (too small), and these days I've seen enough
carbon failure (though not Calfee) to steer clear of it.

Speaking of which, there's a broken Calfee here about 10 images down,
snapped at the typical spots on the frame:

Wow, and here I thought I was the only carbon frame owner on this
board too! I agree that compared to some of today's lightweight
carbon framesets out there, Calfees are indeed heavy. My tetra custom
frame weighs in at an ungainly 2.5lb. In contrast, some of the newer
framesets out of China weight that much - that's frame AND fork!

What kind of fork are you using? Most carbon forks, especially the
lighter ones from Reynolds, True Temper (alpha q) and Easton will only
fit 25mm. You may want to research this, but I believe Winwood makes a
carbon fork that takes 28mm wide tires. I use 700x25s myself and find
its all I need.

On my Calfee I use Speedplay Frogs (got tired of walking like a duck).
I have an extra pair for my fillet-brazed Paul Taylor cross bike, but
since its been used mainly for commuting, I've been using my MKS step-

[RBW] Re: Riv Ride

2009-04-19 Thread David Estes
You rode an extra 20, but probably in the same time we did our 40. Hot,
hot, hot ride, but a GREAT route through Santiago Canyon lead out by Doug.
Lot of cross and head winds that got tiresome, and going up the Santiago
grade sure wore me out (mentally as much as physically, that's a long
stretch of road).

No mechanicals but some bonks and near bonks due to dehydration and heat.

Surprise guests from Walnut Creek dropped by to ride a Legolas and
Rambouillet.

I can say that a good time was had by all!

some pics here:

and the map here:
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/irvine/316123749405740029

The discussion 'round the planning
tablewas
to attempt a dirt trails (fire road) ride out of Redlands in May,
possibly a S24O in Crystal Cove for June, and then San Diego penninsula in
July (I hear they have great shwarma plates!).

THANKS Doug for planning and coordinating this one. I was nice of you guys
to hang around while we waited for our train (and for me on multiple
hills).

Cheers,
David

2009-04-19 Thread Lynne Fitz

u-lock (rear wheel and frame), thick braided cable (front wheel w/
generator hub, Brooks saddle, Carradice rear bag, frame).

If I'm watching it through a window, right by the door (and it is
parked with 2 Sweetpeas and another Riv), I'm less fussy about where
the cable is going.

I still twitch, but it hasn't gone anywhere yet. If it was an all-day
situation, I'd ask if I could bring it inside.

This is in-town Portland and certain shopping malls in Beaverton.

Hammered honjo fenders and canvas luggage stand out in the crowd...

Brewster,

Then I guess I'm NOT the only Calfee owner on this board! It's
reassuring to hear that they can indeed hold up over the long term.
Calfee's about the only carbon bike I'd consider. Practically retro
compared to a Cervelo or such. The durability record looks pretty
good, probably because it'a few ounces heavier than some of the latest
stuff. If only the fork would take a 28! The rear will no problem,
though.

For now, the Calfee and the Riv are sharing a set of pedals. The Riv
is geared for the flatlands, the Calfee for hills. It's nice to have
options!

[RBW] Re: Upside Down Albatross Bars

2009-04-19 Thread Ken Yokanovich

Thanks for the laugh Chris... Yes, I have heard terrible things
about yellow bikes, particularly those with S&S couplers. If I'm too
troubled, yes... I know you and a few other people that would be happy
to help rid me of the affliction!

I commuted exclusively using a Moustache bar on my old Trek 520. It
was fine for the commute, but if the rides stretched much past 50 or
60 miles, my wrists were uncomfortable. Once winter training rides
started stretching into the hundreds in preparation for TransIowa, I
switched to a Noodle bar. I like the variable positions on Noodle bar:
thumbs on the inside of the first bend in the bars toward the brake
levers, on the flatness of the top of the bar, on the hoods, and once
in a very rare moment in the drops.

[RBW] Re: Stitching an An-Atomica Titanico

2009-04-19 Thread Bill M.

I, too, have laced my S-A due to inner thigh interference. I found it
hard to tension a single lace adequately, so my SA is done in three
separate loops. Looks the same in profile, works fine, and was a
definite improvement over stock (for me).

I have also had to trim the slot a little wider, as the edges between
the sit-bone areas had drawn together and were trying to overlap.
That's an 'approved' modification according tot he instruction sheet.
While I was at it, I lengthened the wide part of the slot a bit to get
a bit more pressure relief a bit further back. That's probably not
'approved' but has also been an improvement IMO.

Thanks, Ken.

Curious what limits the ride distance with the non-drop bars?

Shoulders? Neck? Wrists?

I tried to place these bars in the proximity of their Noodle predecessor,

Yes, I agree.
   I have a 1996 Litespeed Vortex with, I'm guessing, 50 to 60,000 miles
on it. It has a brushed finish and except for some scratches on the decals
looks as good as the day I purchased it. That's another advantage of
titanium. I did replace the carbon fork just because I was getting nervous
after
riding on it for a decade.
I still love riding it. On the other hand, I've given names to my
Hilsen, Rambouillet, and Quickbeam and, when no one is looking, on rides I
talk
to them. Don't laugh - I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I guess my point is that I consider the Vortex a tool (a very efficient
tool) and the steel lugged bikes as having a personality.

Ken,

Don't worry about it. I was just as bad. After the morning "social"

Cannon Valley trail for another 40 miles. That's why I didn't hang

And yes, Hiawatha is a special bike shop. My only gripe is I didn't

[RBW] Re: Riv Ride

2009-04-19 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi Doug,

We have a sick one at home. Not the same one. The other one. Anyway, I wasn't
able to make it to the start of the ride, but thought I'd try and find you
guys. I wanted to get in some hills so I headed out from my place and headed
over to Ortega Highway and then up Antonio Parkway. Man, it was windy going up
Antonio! I went up to Santa Margarita Parkway (it was 92 degrees when I got
there. Geez!). I made a left and head up SM Pkwy toward El Toro, figuring I
might be able to find you on your route. I headed up and up until I got to
Cook's Corner, but not Riv group. I turned right and headed back toward Rancho
Santa Margarita via the canyon. Once I got back to SM Pkwy it was 95 degrees! I
headed back down Antonio. The wind had changed so I didn't have the nice
tailwind that I would have expected. I couldn't wait to get back down to the
coast. My head was beginning to hurt from dehydration. Close to 6o miles total
after a short out and back into San Clemente. Not too shabby, but it would have
been nice to see you guys. I was even on the AHH.

Hope you ride went well. Sorry I missed it!

Joe

Sunday, April 19. Meet at the Irvine train station (Barranca & Ada)
around 9 and ride by 9:30. Santiago Cyn plus a detour to the start-finish
line of the ’84 Olympic road course in MV. We’ll throw in a
couple of dirt options (Peters Cyn and a cut thru Whiting Ranch) that parallel
the course so people can either stick to pavement or get dirty and still end up
together. Total distance around 40 miles. We may have some guys
coming from LA & not sure if they’ll drive or Metrolink. Check
the Flickr site for any last minute updates or changes:

Patrick makes an important point. Bars, saddles and
pedals all work together. Your entire weight is supported on your butt,
two feet and two hands, and distributed among those 5 points. Toss in
medical constraints (back, knees, wrists, etc.) and it’s a multi-variate
challenge. Love my Noodles, Brooks, and Grip Kings (sounds like I been
hitting the kool aid!) but as well as they satisfy my needs, that combo may be
a torture rack for someone else. This is how we all wind up with a shop
full of bike parts after a few years cycling.

[RBW] Re: My New-To-Me Atlantis

2009-04-19 Thread PATRICK MOORE
All of these methods require that you are *not* using a brake that mounts to
a bolt running through the crown, right?

Too bad, because they seem like very good solutions if your bike has cantis,
V-brakes or discs.

Is there any similar method that would allow the plug to have two holes
offset to either side of such a central brake mounting bolt? I can't think
of one myself ...

I wonder if one could rivet a tight "U" clamp widthwise across the fender
through which the brake mounting bolt could run? You'd have to get your
measurements right, since I can see no way of adjusting the fit once
everything is together.

Which city?

I've locked my commuter Riv up in certain public settings using U lock for
rear wheel and rear triangle, and cable around everything, but I'd not want
to trust this for extended periods in other areas; this is Albuquerque, NM
which is *relatively* benign.

[RBW] Re: My New-To-Me Atlantis

2009-04-19 Thread Ken Yokanovich

Thanks...

The fender spacer for the fork was an interesting little project. I
had an OLD threadless stem from which I cut an approximately 1cm ring
from. I then scalloped the shape using a half-round file to match the
arc of the fender. I then finished the shape by wrapping progressively
finer sand paper over the protected fender itself to match the final
shape. It's cut a little shorter toward the front of the fender. I
have successfully mounted this fender (and others before it) using a
Velox bar plug stuck up into the steer tube. The fatter "collar" of
the bar end plug makes a nice "pad" if the fender is pulled up tight
against the crown. In this case, the collar of the Velox plug fit
just inside the aluminum spacer keeping things nice and centered. I
use a much longer bolt, as well as a second wedge from another screw-
type bar plug stuck up into the steer tube. It's VERY tight, and the
wide base of the "spacer" makes for a VERY stable front fender.

I briefly considered using the expanding wedge from a bar-end shifter,
but did not have a bolt long enough or of the correct threading to
work. Going this route, I'd be assured that it would be even more
secure. As things are, the fit is tight enough and difficult enough
to remove that I am not worried about the fender coming loose or
dropping out of the hole.

[RBW] Re: My New-To-Me Atlantis

2009-04-19 Thread Ken Yokanovich

Eric, sorry I wasn't more social at Hiawatha on Saturday. I do owe it
to Jim for having IN-STOCK parts that I wanted to finish the bike.
He's got a really great little shop, worth the trip out of the way to
pick things up. It really is pretty interesting to see just how many
Rivendell-related bicycles there are in our "neighborhood." I see a
gentleman with a VERY tall blue Ramb riding on Como Avenue quite
frequently, a couple of Quickbeam spottings here and there too. It'd
be fun to have an organized "get-together" fall-S24O/ride up to the
Group Camp at William O'Brien state park or something?!

[RBW] Re: My New-To-Me Atlantis

2009-04-19 Thread Ken Yokanovich

I think I owe most of the credit for the quick commitment to my VERY
understanding wife. I called her just after 6am as soon as I got to
work to make sure I did not have to back out of my commitment to buy
the bike. Furthermore, she understood just how badly that I wanted
it, enough to chase down the FedEx delivery man on Good Friday at the
FedEx terminal to PICK-UP the package because we had missed the
delivery! She's not interested in riding, so I think my next purchase
will have to be at the jewelry store ;)

I'm a self-admitted "bag-matcher." (The first step to recovery is
admitting that one has a problem, right?) I thought about matching bar-
tape to the saddle, but the saddle is really reserved for another
upcoming project so I am simply using the honey for the time-being on
the Atlantis. I have a nicely aging honey B17 TI on my Rivendell All-
Rounder. Variety is the spice of life, so I thought that I might just
try something different.

The front deraileur is a FD-5504. Ideally, it would be adjusted
lower. FWIW, I think that the next "Silver" branded component should
be a front deraileur compatible with smaller front rings and low BB
drop! Talk about a niche product?!

[RBW] Re: Your Riv and the city: lock up tight or second bike?

2009-04-19 Thread Rick

I've got a mini on-guard cable that loops through the seat and baggins
bag, and am using the Zefal skewers. With that, mini u-lock.

In areas where I'm going to be seconds away from the bike, I've used a
beretta trigger-lock that I picked up somewhere or another. It's
light enough to go in my bag all the time, but is only a deterrent for
the opportunist, not a real bicycle thief. But maybe the thief would
assume (incorrectly) from the beretta logo that I'm nearby and packing
heat?

[RBW] Upside Down Albatross Bars

2009-04-19 Thread Chris Halasz

Mounted the A-Bars topside down, and am liking the feel.

See:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sea-fisherman/3456027280/in/set-72157610326961535/

Rightside up was great, but I couldn't use the center section near the
stem properly, as it was too far down.

With the setup shown, bar ends are about 1cm below saddle top, but the
drop is compensated by the close proximity to the saddle.

At the hoods, which is close to where they'd be on drop bars with a
3cm shorter stem, they are about 1cm higher than the saddle top.

Then, at the center, which was a stretch with the rightside up
mounting, the bars are about 3cm above saddle. Nice! Likewise, the
shallower 'S' of the Albatross provides more hand width to rest near
the stem than a Moustache bar.

Compare:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sea-fisherman/3455206329/in/set-72157610326961535/

with (Cyclotourist's):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/3436507272/in/set-72157616594639367/

Off for a 40 miler ...

[RBW] Stitching an An-Atomica Titanico

2009-04-19 Thread Chris Halasz

If your most excellent Selle An-Atomica Titanico interferes, in the
mid-section, with your most wonderfully developed adductors, or, for
that matter, if it's too unsupported in the middle, you may want to
check out my An-Atomica stitched modification instruction:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sea-fisherman/3455206389/in/set-72157606678980740/

We've done this now with two of the saddles, and find it improved the
already excellent experience.

Couple years ago when I was on the IBob (is there an e-mail box big

Jerseys from Portland Cyclewear. Truth is, I am not a jersey wearer.
I wound up wearing this about 3 or 4 times then relegated it to the

There is no size tag on it, but I am right between medium and large

panel. In the front there is an IBob logo in a oval that says
Bridgestone Owners Bunch on top, Cycling Lore & Tradition on the
bottom, 19 on the right side, 94 on the left side.

UPS ground and envelope should come to about $8.00.

[RBW] WTB- TA Zephyr 185mm Crankset or Arms

there is the Carmina in 185, but it's not a Zephyr. The Zephyr is

I bought the ITM Selego. It weighed tons. Very heavy! I didn't even

heavy? Shockingly heavy? Decades ago, I used Scott AT2 and AT3 bars
and loved them.
