David, What rim are you using? We need to know because every tire is slightly different width depending on the rim. A 28mm tire is not just 28mm. I wish manufacturers would say when they give a tires width it's xx mm's wide on a xx mm wide rim. That said, after 3 or 4 pairs of tires separating.. David ...it's time for a new tire! They don't appear to be ruff or tuff, so. unless you're a glutton for disappointment, stop putting up with them! You gave them more than a fair shot time for a change. I know what you're asking for is tough. what you'd like is a bunch of tires at your disposal to mount and see how wide and much volume they have. yes? My first thought is Vittoria Randonneur's. Try the Cross. They come in a 28,32 and 35. You can get them at REI. http://tinyurl.com/rxrucg They are a little heavier but as always one must look into why they are heavier. More rubber and double shielding . If they fall apart, REI will take care of it. They also sell a Panaracer Crosstown in a 32mm, which may work as they run a little narrow. It's heavy too, but it's because of all that tread and super puncture resistance! I use these in a 35(34 actual on a 24mm rim) and they are great on paved and back roads. Loads of Air volume. [RBW] Scwalbe Big Apple/Marathon XR 50mm's
Greetings, I'm considering a Big Apple or Marathon XR in a 700x50 size, and wondered about the differences in gearing compared to a 700x35 tire, which I use on another bike. I can see how the gear inches change by the gear charts for different size tires, but what affect does the extra width and heft have, if any, in real world riding? A 2 tooth reduction seems to be where I'm going from my road bike using a 13-32 7 speed freewheel. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: No Rivendell merit badge for you
I fondly remember getting my cycling merit badge many years ago. Fifty miles seemed like such a long trip, I think they even gave us a time limit to complete the ride IIRC. I think the original spirit of scouting has many similarities to rivishness, which is part of the appeal of both. I'm partial to the insistently minimal politics of grant though, the scouts has frustrated me lately with what some of their officials ups have said and done--it was not (and I don't think is/hope isn't usually) the trend at the grassroots level across the states during my experience there. Too bad I feel the need to distance myself from that area, and don't wish to send this off topic--scouting on the whole is great! Big apples, not bad ones. erik On Fri, May 15, 2009 at 3:39 AM, Bruce fullylug...@yahoo.com wrote: I have the patch for doing that trip. [RBW] Re: No Rivendell merit badge for you
Dunno. But seeing as I already earned the Girl Scout cycling merit badge a zillion years ago, earning a Rivendell merit badge would seem almost redundant. For my Scout badge I had to help organize a bike safety rodeo for the local Brownie troop (we invited the Cub Scouts to participate as well so our numbers would look better), fix a flat tire all by myself, plan a troop bicycle ride of at least 10 miles long (for Junior Girl Scouts, ages 9-12 and three parent chaperones) and assign other scouts to help me transport a picnic lunch for up to ten riders. The last was lots of fun. We started in Walnut Creek and took a 13-mile loop through Concord and Lafayette before ending up back at Walnut Park. The scouts were all fine, it was the parents who struggled with the distance. I felt sad because my mother, who was the assistant Troop leader, had never learned to ride a bike, couldn't go. I was eleven when I completed the badge, and well on my way to loving bicycles forever. On second thought, it seems that those who attend the not-quite-annual Rivendell Weekends already get some kind of badge for their efforts... [RBW] Re: Photos of the new Rivendell Quickbeam
Fenders are 50mm Berthoud. They work well with the 35mm Paselas. At the seatstay bridge I used one of the small fender attachement pieces that Jitensha sells. The curve of the fender has been adjusted so I can have a 2 tooth variance from flip to flop side without having to reposition the fender. Since I am using a bolt on Phil Wood hub (fixed fixed) I simply unthread the bolts all the way to removes the wheel. Deflating the tire works too. The ride is wonderful and has seen daily use since I have gotten it. Clayton, SF CA On Fri, May 15, 2009 at 8:07 AM, Rene Valbuena valbu...@ix.netcom.comwrote: Beautiful bike.
I was eleven when I completed the badge, and well on my way to loving bicycles forever. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/3352745506/ On second thought, it seems that those who attend the not-quite- annual Rivendell Weekends already get some kind of badge for their efforts... http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/508855834/ Beth On May 14, 10:42 pm, Lynne Fitz fitzb...@comcast.net wrote: so, like, what WOULD a Rivendell merit badge look like? I tried Ernesto and quickly gave up on it because when it came off the chain as the chain spun, the oil and gunk would adhere to the rear rim and spokes and was a bear to get off. [RBW] Re: Scwalbe Big Apple/Marathon XR 50mm's
I've used both tires albeit on differently sized rims (XR 26x50 Big Apple 700x60) The Big Apple works well at a variety of pressures, though at the high end, you lose the benefits of fat tire suspension. I really like the XR's for snow riding and dirt roads. I use these on my Surly Big Dummy and they are great for toting the 100+ pound loads I sometimes carry in town. I run these on wide Salsa Gordo rims. I recently discovered how low is too low in terms of tire pressure for these tires. I was running about 20 psi or so in the front and I discovered that on sharp turns at speed the tire would suddenly collapse onto the sidewall. It was a little alarming when it happened on a fast downhill. I now completely understand the RBW bias towards round tires! At 40 psi and above, they work great. In my opinion, XR's are complete overkill for anything except nasty roads, no roads and very heavy loads. I used them road touring one year and my Atlantis felt like a truck. However . . . Marathon Supremes in 50mm are great. They are lighter than Big Apples and roll really well. I've been running these on my Bombadil on road rides up to 54miles and will use them on an upcoming 3000 mile tour. They are very nice. [RBW] Speaking of merit badges...Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen
Are you a member? So here is the story...turning the way-back machine to about 1996, some friends and I were sitting over coffee after a ride and started to recount how many times we had done this. As it turned out, it was apparent that not only had the vast majority of our rides (bike, motorcycle, skateboard, snowboard...) started or ended over coffee, but many of our good friends and riding partners were met at the cafes we were frequenting. We had a pretty good network that spanned darn near coast to coast. An Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen I blurted out while simultaneously sketching out a logo on the napkin Fast forward to about 6 months ago, I was digging through some piles of artwork looking for something, and stumbled on my original sketch. All of the patches and hats we had originally done up were long retired, lost, or given away...so I got in touch with some of the original ACW's and told them I was going to mint some lapel pins...everyone chipped in to beat the minimums. Our whole thing was very tongue in cheek, but we wanted it to have an old money-secret society-unleash the hounds type of feel to it. Anyway after finding the iBob's / ROB's and meeting so many awesome people and reading about the network that exists between the riders, I thought it would be cool to expand the ACW. It's all for fun and conversation, and really just a bit of decoration for the bags, hats etc...but wanted to offer them up. I have @ 20-30 or so left of the lapel pins, but we can do more if interest is there. We were also contemplating doing up some patches too? $6/pc shipped to you. Trades for your club pins is good too. For that matter no interesting trade would be turned down. Drop me line hbcl...@yahoo.com or just paypal me there with your info! A 2 tooth reduction seems to be where I'm going from my road bike using a 13-32 7 speed freewheel. A 32 mm 559 tire on a 22 mm rim measures just shy of 25. [RBW] Re: May SoCal Rivendell Bicycle Appreciation Society Ride
Notice that it's warming up a bit, probably up to 92F. That's by 1-2:00 though, so should be in the 80's for most of the ride. Still, bring two H20 bottles and hydrate on the way over. Bring food, too. There's a supermarket on the way, but there would be a detour to get to it. If anyone is running late, we can have a mid-route link up at Crafton Hills Collegehttp://maps.google.com/maps?f=qsource=s_qhl=engeocode=q=crafton+hills+collegeie=UTF8ll=34.041458,-117.100825spn=0.017212,0.038624z=15iwloc=A. That's about 45 min into the ride. For the locals that can't make the ride, we would love to meet up post-ride at Gourmet Pizza Co, maybe threeish??? Again, Jack Browns are fine, 35mm Paselas are what I'll be riding. RTs are great too, but you'll be feeling it in your arms by the end of the ride. Soo worth it though!!! :-) See y'all at 9:00! Plenty of elevation, but only one portion is steep (trust me, you've seen how I climb...). Love to get some folks out and enjoying the great out doors! Discussion here or on flickr is fine. Big decision is finding the date which impacts the fewest... FYI, we're also thinking a June S24O to Crystal Cove and an early July ride in San Diego. -- Cheers, David Redlands, CA -- Cheers, David Redlands, CA --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. You may want to be fast...I think I underestimated the interest these would garner. 20 are spoken for already, I have 10 or so left. Maybe wise to check before sending funds from now on. I can have more made, but the turn time is like 3 weeks. I don't want to have people waiting. Brad There are many things which kick ass and this is CLEARLY one of them. You can get them at REI.http://www.rei.com/product/709112 They are a little heavier but as always one must look into why they are heavier. Or just stick with a Pasela 32. I like my 35 mm (measured 34 mm) Randonneur Pros. Nice rolling, sturdy, and reflective sidewalls. Not exactly light, but the Pro's have less tread and folding beads so they're lighter (and presumably speedier) than the Cross version. Vittoria's seem to run just under stated size, so the 32s should come in around 31 actual.
