[RBW] spotted in Iowa City: green Rivendell custom?

2009-05-19 Thread Forrest

Today (5/19) over the lunch hour, on Clinton Street, locked up in
front of The Summit . . . a nice green Rivendell bike. Looked to be a
Long/Low or maybe a Road custom. Belong to anyone on this list? --

[RBW] Re: Dick's new Bombadil

2009-05-19 Thread Dick Gilpin

Hi Marty. Thanks for the nice words. Funny you should mention the root
beer - I'm sitting at my computer sipping a can of diet root beer right now.
As far as the decals go I think they use the white ones with certain colors.
Keven at Rivendell did say at one point in time that their order of light
colored decals were due in pretty soon. I didn't even think about the color
of the decals - It wasn't something I ordered as an option. Thanks again.
See ya.

Really fine build-up Dick. Color reminds me of a cool frosty mug of
root beer on a hot day. Even has the creamy head! First I've seen
white background on the decals - is that an option depending on the
color, or did you request something special?

[RBW] guidonet brake levers

2009-05-19 Thread Seth Vidal

Silly idea - has anyone ever made interrupter-style levers in the
shape of guidonet brake levers?

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/org/rochet/pages/rochet04.html

Considering how long the ramps are on some bikes it seems like it
might be a nice combination.

GP has written a few times about the development and decision to go with the
second top tube. There's also an article about it in the most recent Reader.

Orderable RR#41 -

I've ridden one, and Gino had a nice writeup on his blog about test riding
one at length. If the second tube makes it look "heavy" (and I think I'd go
with "indestructable"), it rides light.

[RBW] Re: Pricing Rambouillet frame?

2009-05-19 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery

The question is not what it is worth, but what you are willing to
accept, how long you can wait, etc. To the right buyer, who wants that
exact thing, even a high price will seem fair, but that person may not
come along right away. For a quick sale, ask $800, and it should sell
pretty fast.

The couplers, custom paint, and the no-longer-made status are not
clear-cut add-ons to the sale price, because not everybody wants the
added features, not everybody will like the custom color, and RBW
isn't exactly advertising the Rambouillet much these days. For some
perspective, a friend of mine just picked up a coupled Atlantis, in a
prime size, with custom paint, in nice condition. This was a complete
bike, not just a frameset, and he paid MUCH less than $1600, incl s/h.
Granted, this was an extra-good deal, but that is your competition.

If I was selling this, I'd start it on ebay with a buy-it-now of $2200
or whatever you think is minimally extravagant, and to sweeten the
deal and reduce the number of questions, I'd offer "free shipping in
the continental US". Then I'd reduce the price a little bit every day
or two, until you reach your bottom line or it sells.

Thanks Michael for those nice words about my bike. The light attachment
came with the light. It did have a longer bolt - long enough to go thru the
front fork if you wanted to mount it that way. I just replaced the long
bolt with a shorter one, and attached it directly to the front rack.

Michael, I'm not sure of the rational for the double tube, but it does make
for a bike with a distinctive look. The "heavy" look doesn't concern me.
To be truthful, it rides much like my Atlantis, and to date my Atlantis and
Wilbury have been my favorite bikes to ride.

Yeah, I know Mac is retiring the "homepage" web sites, but I still like to
use them (I think I have till July 7). I'm not too good at reading

better at using them after they retire the homepage system.

[RBW] Re: Dick's new Bombadil

2009-05-19 Thread MichaelH

A very nice looking bike and very thoughtfully kitted out. From
whence came the light attachment?

Perhaps not a question for you, and from someone who has never owned a
mountain bike what is the rationale for the double top tube on
this bike. It gives the bike a heavy look.

BTW, Mac is doing away with the "homepage" web sites; but if you try
the gallery it works great.

[RBW] Re: Pricing Rambouillet frame?

2009-05-19 Thread MichaelH

Unless someone is absolutely wedded to the desire for a Rambouillet, I
don't think they would compare it to a retrofit. Bilenky, for example,
charges $1550 for a lugged, delux level frame, with $400 for the S&S
couplers. I don't know if that includes a 2 tone paint job, but it
does establish a $2,000 alternative for a new bike. Asking $1600 for a
slightly used, immediatly available frame and headset still seems
reasonable.

[RBW] Re: Ernesto Lube Users ?

2009-05-19 Thread Garth

Thanks for the input. There's nothing worse that lube that does
spatters. I've used pro-link for along time, and I'll stick to that
for now. I may try some home brew thoughmineral spirits and Mobil
1 synthetic,as I have quite a bit of it.

I was wondering if Ernesto Lube was even a real product, "he" doesn't
answer repeated emails. The only written stuff on the web seems to be
from bloggers who get paid to write about such things. Eco-snake oil I
guess.

There are two parts to this: 1) what is a Rambouillet frame worth,
and 2) what are S&S Couplers worth. I think a retrofit plus a paint
job is around $800. To that, add the frame itself, which in part
depends on the condition of the paint. If the paint is in good
condition and the decals and headbadge are present, I think $800 or
above would be reasonable.  Without the decals, several hundred less;
also less for scratches, etc. Curiously, my method also comes out to
your $1600 figure.

[RBW] Re: Pricing Rambouillet frame?

2009-05-19 Thread MichaelH

I don't think I would put it on ebay without establishing some
minimum. Assuming its in very good condition, I would think that
would be at least 70 % of its replacement cost, without a custom paint
job. Around $1600 sounds fair. I have a Ram. and an Ebisu All
Purpose, which is designed like a AHH, but with canti breaks and a one
color paint job and I still prefer to ride the Ram when I'm not
carrying a bunch of stuff or doing lots of bad road, so I believe
there is still a good market for that bike.

[RBW] Re: looking for a good bike shop in Eugene

2009-05-19 Thread Lesli

Agreed about Blue Heron. It's less flashy than some of the other
shops but they really know vintage parts and bike. Go see mechanic,
Louis Orsini. He works on my Rivendell custom and our other, vintage
road bikes. Sue, the owner, has ridden a number of brevets with me.
This is the bob shop in Eugene. It's also the place to buy Brooks
saddles.

[RBW] Pricing Rambouillet frame?

2009-05-19 Thread Timothy Whalen
Hi,

This is perhaps a strange question but I am hoping to draw on the list's
collective experience and wisdom as I try to figure out what price to ask
for a frame. It is a 58 cm Rambouillet in fine shape with S&S couplers.
New total cost including couplers and custom forest green paint was about
$2200+. Another hard to figure in factor is that the Rambouillet, as you
know, is no longer available.

Any ideas about how to price fairly?

Thanks,
Tim Whalen
