[RBW] Re: For your viewing pleasure: My newly painted Riv Custom

2009-05-27 Thread Jim Cloud

I've certainly gotten into the habit of using a strap on my Silca pump
to get rid of an annoying rattle that occurs without its use. The
pump on my Riv is located beneath the top tube, with a brazed peg on
the head tube to accommodate the pump. Without a strap the pump
vibrates against the rear brake cable. I don't see any marring of the
paint, and I'd definitely rather ride without the rattle!

By the way, I don't if anyone else has had this problem, but I can't
view your blog site. Every time I attempt to open the site, my
Internet Explorer aborts the operation. Maybe I should try Google's
Chrome!

I don't know if this makes a difference, but my frame a 63cm seat tube with

[RBW] Weird sound

2009-05-27 Thread zrainryder

Upon the last 10 miles of a 3 day excursion with quite a bit of
climbing, my bike emitted a loud sound that sounded like an elephant
mating call. At first I thought it was the front wheel. The bike
makes the sound when going 15 mph+ and when coasting or when pedaling
backwards at that speed. Otherwise it sounds serendipitously. I now
suspect that the cause is in the bottom bracket. I'm using Sugino
cranks with a Tange bottom bracket which has around 5,000 miles on
it. I have not performed service to it of any kind. Any thoughts or
suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Chris.

[RBW] 57cm Bleriot For Sale

I am selling a 57cm Bleriot for $400. I used this frame for two years
to commute to work (800 miles a year). This bike is in good shape and
the reason I am selling it is that I replaced it with a new Saluki.
I would say that the condition of the frame is 7-8 out of 10. Call me

Not sure what a elephant mating call would sound like as voiced by a
bicycle.

If it's making the sound while coasting, it is unlikely to be a bottom
bracket issue.

I would start by removing the rear wheel and checking the play in the
freehub and axle.

Then remove pedals and regrease threads.

Bottom brackets can emit sounds from the bearings, or if the grease melts
out of the threads, you'll get a metal/metal contact squawk. But, you would
only hear that when you apply pressure on the pedals.

I'm just starting to get that type of sound on my Quickbeam, but it's only
on steeper hills while pushing hard out of the saddle. Typically, that is
easily silenced by removal and regreasing the threads.

hope that helps,

2009-05-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Is that mating sound a squeak, squeak, squeak! or a tock, tock? I had my
Riv commuter making such loud, annoying, and troubling knocking and squeaking
noises recently, but only when I powered uphill or accelerated with some
vigah (to quote JFK). I found that tightening the Phil cups cured it. Now my
bb's mating is silent, as mating ought to be.

If your bb's mating call is a loud trumpeting noise, I can't diagnose it but
I would be very interested in finding out how the hell a bicycle makes an
elephant trumpeting noise.

I love M bars even though I don't find them comfortable, which is indeed a
weird obsession. I've tried, literally, half a dozen different M bars
(Nittos of various ilks as well as others) on as many different bikes, and
have always ended up selling them. I have Gnashbar M bars on my Nishiki
mixty fixty grocery bike, and yes, they are uncomfortable: too low and they
are too low; too high and they feel tippy. But they do give excellent
conrol, excellent braking, and as for comfort, who needs comfort on a bike
that I ride at most no more than 4 miles one way? They look so interesting
and elegant (white bar tape, cheap, and brake levers (left side minus lever
proper; the right does the front braking) angled upward like antennae to
give a bar end flavor. (Yes, braking is comfortable.)

Sounds fun. I used to ride from my house in Canyon to the canyon a
couple of times a week. Back before they had bike trails in the park.

Sure hope I can get up there sometime soon with the Quickbeam.

If you are referring to the metal washer, I faced the rounded side
toward the shifter. That said, I'm not sure it matters.

Since then I've had the Paramount restored/custom painted by Cyclart

[RBW] Re: Two things, completely unrelated to each other

2009-05-27 Thread Jim Cloud

Colin,

Thanks, it's a custom rack that was built as a prototype model for Tim
Isaac's custom bicycles in Denver, CO way back in 1977. Tim's late
partner, Jock Fisher, was the designer and builder of the rack. At
that time Tim and Jock were working on a touring model bicycle for
which they intended to use racks based on the design. I really don't
know if they ever completed the designs and built them up on one of
their bikes. I believe that they also approached Hartley Alley of the
Touring Cyclist Shop in Boulder with a rack proposal, but I don't
think that ever got off the ground.

As you may know, Tim Isaac went on to be a lead desiger for Trek
bicycles and, subsequently, was the guy running Match bicycles (they
built the Schwinn Paramount bicycles for a time in the mid-1990's). I
think he now is working with Giant.

I'm thinking about getting one of the new VO Campagne handlebar bags
to go on the rack, it looks like its dimensions would be perfect, but
I might have to consider fitting regular drop bars to get everything
right.

2009-05-27 Thread David Estes
Don't know about the 24hrs in the Cyn, but glad to hear of a M-Bar convert!
I've actually broken the comfortable for 20 miles barrier I think
that only applies for road use, mixed terrain is a different story as they
work for 30 miles, maybe more. I've rode them for 70 previously, but that
wasn't so much fun (being out of condition, maybe nothing would be!!!).

[RBW] Re: Weird sound

2009-05-27 Thread Christopher Paul

ha ha. fortunately I'm not riding in East Africa in the near future.
If I do, I'll make sure there is no elephant mating call sound...

I cleaned the bottom bracket shell, re greased the bb, and clearned
re greased the pedals. I also did a cursory check of the rear wheel
and seat just to cover all the bases.

Don't know if this solved the problem, but I'll find out tomorrow when
I go for a club ride.

Cheers,
Chris

8 years I have come to agree with him. Mine is perfect above 3.1
inches of quill
