Re: [RBW] Where are you and when will you take the fenders off for the dry season?
Honolulu - All fenders, all the time. Like we say out here, if you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes. If you do like the weather, wait ten minutes. Generally I ride to work on wet streets in the morning and come home on dry ones except for the days I do the opposite. Aloha! [RBW] Re: Racer M Alive!
And I'm not sure why the Bombadil and Hunqapillar both have DT shifter bosses standard, when they are so right for bar-ends or thumbies, yet the Roadeo does not. Hmmm If it's true that the Paul brakes can overpower the stays or fork blades and cause a twist, (I'm only guessing here given that Paul uses a similar explanation for their Neo-Retro Cantis: "These are very powerful brakes, and have a tendency to over power thin tubed frames (in any material)." then I say build stronger frames to allow these great brakes to be used. As for Waterford, that seemed to me a cop-out estimate, unless they can explain the issue. They can't be serious unless they're talking about a re-paint as well. I'm having the bosses put on an older frame as we speak, and the cost is more in line with what Joel suggested. Also agree with him on the adjustability - I have center mounts on a single speed that feel and work perfectly, only wish I had them brazed on. It's not applicable to the centerpull brakes, as far as I know. As Jan has pointed out (here? on the BOB list? can't recall) the location of the bosses for centerpull is much higher up the fork, just below the fork crown; canti bosses are much lower down on the fork and consequently have much more leverage. > (I'm only guessing here given that Paul uses > a similar explanation for their Neo-Retro Cantis: "These are very > powerful brakes, and have a tendency to over power thin tubed frames > (in any material)." then I say build stronger frames to allow these > great brakes to be used. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne - a fully loaded tourer?
Have used my 56cm Hillborne on a S24O. Definitely not a cross-country trip. But it handled fine. Was just rear loaded. Here's a snap from the trip - http://tinyurl.com/yd45znr At the time, my weight was about 240, and probably 25 or so pounds of gear. One of the panniers has the sleeping bag stuffed in. If this were a longer trip, that probably would go on the front rack and more clothing/food/etc. into the pannier. Handling was fine. No better or worse than the (now sold) Atlantis. If one keeps track - my weight and load exceeded what was "suggested" by Rivendell when the bike came out. No ill effects happened. As Doug mentions, they are conservative in the ratings. [RBW] Re: powder coat and decals?
Definitely call Rivendell- they sent me decals when I had my frame powdercoated, and were very helpful on the phone, explaining the proper technique for putting them on.They even posted a web video about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-6Jya6H4lY Note: They do make it look easy in the video- and it is, but only if you're using the proper technique of 'burnishing' the decal to the surface.Just watch the video closely a couple times and you shouldn't have any problems. Re: [RBW] Re: Racer M Alive!
I don't understand the Waterford thing either. I don't know about the stays, but the tubes I know about on the Roadeo aren't exactly super light and thin, unless you are comparing them to the Bombadil. At at least as stout as the Rambo, and stouter than the Legolas, I think, at least in the bigger sizes. They are billing it as a light, rackless, go-fast bike, but it's still Grant Petersen conservative in its own way. Plus, there are other light tubed bikes (Boulder Bike) where Waterford attaches canti studs w/ no fuss. So it would be interesting to have a better explanation for Waterford's reticence. [RBW] Re: Where are you and when will you take the fenders off for the dry season?
Portland, Or. It rains here from time to time... My commuter has fenders, SKS P45s, year round. I'll leave fenders, Berthouds, on the Hilsen for my brevets but may take them off this summer if I want to run my Schwalbe Marathons (700x41). I can fit tires up to 700x35 with the Berthouds. The QB has SKS P45s on it for now. I may remove those as they make "changing gears" a bit of a pain. We'll see. On my Rambouillet I had Berthoud 700x40s on with RT tires. I realized I wanted to run a bigger tire and since I have other fendered bikes I took them off. I also took off the Mark's rack. It now sports 700x32 Paselas. I like the way the bike looks and rides stripped down. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Racer M Alive!
Better yet, just have the unpainted bike sent to Nobilette and have him braze them on. Wait time could be a hassle, but the extra shipping would still vastly outweigh W'Ford's upcharge. Sheesh, it's not like've never done canti posts before. In fact whatever set up for the first Racer posts there is, while a pain (aren't they in the bike building business?) would be a sales point as well. "First in the industry to offer mounts for Paul's Racer-M" or some such advert. On Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 7:04 AM, Dustin Sharp wrote: > I don't understand the Waterford thing either. [RBW] Re: Where are you and when will you take the fenders off for the dry season?
As others have said, I have fenders on all my bikes, including one dual banger MTB, and leave 'em on all year around. In addition to the unpredictable weather here in the upper Midwest, I ride mostly on trails converted from old railroad ROW's that have been surfaced over with finely crushed limestone tailings. This stuff gets very dusty during dry months and I have found that the fenders keep the brakes and headset, in particular, from getting gunked up as much. They also protect the paint from rock chips. The Mariposa arrived with fenders installed and they've never been off :) Agreed about the crushed limestone trails. We have the Wildgoose Trail just a couple of miles away and, while it's not my favorite riding venue - the limestone surface is noisy and dusty and where it's not a complete cover the trail can be pretty slippery when it's wet - it's convenient for some rides. -Ken -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] rivendell blog: 2010 Track champ series, and a question
So there's a link on the Rivendell site to this gallery: http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/03/track/2010-track-world-championships-galleries_109147?album=26&gallery=252 And a pretty interesting frame 'malfunction' in the 8th photo in the set. But I noticed something else that I found curious as well: in the 3rd and 11th photos in the set, the captions read: "Czech rider was also DQ'ed for arm position." "Gideon Massie was disqualified for improper arm position." How does that work? How can you be disqualified from race for how you position your arms? Is it a safety issue? I come from a bmx background and know nothing about track racing so forgive my ignorance. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. In Portland it can be fender season just about anytime, except maybe between 4th of July and Labor Day. Isn't this question justification enough for having more than one bike? RE: [RBW] Re: Racer M Alive!
This brouhaha should not have happened if RBW (and Waterford?) did not agree to grant the request to add a DT stud in the first place. Now everybody thought we can semi-customize the Rodeo to our liking. The coming out of the new Paul's Racer-M further stoked this. We want to semi-customize our Rodeo to fit the new brake. If I remember it right, the Rodeo is built to the lightest configuration as Grant "the conservative" would allow it. Thus, to save weight, even though minimal but at least weight-saving, there will be no cantis and no DT studs. Would you happen to know the specs of the tubes used to build the Sam Hillborne? Does Rivendell recommend a maximum load on the front and rear racks? Also, I'm worried that a 60cm frame might be too small. The head tube didn't look that long in the pictures of a 60cm frame I saw. If I did my math correct, the 60cm is equivalent to a 66.63 cm (C-T) seat tube on a frame with a level top tube. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Any bike, anywhere?
So Frank (on his Surly LHT) and I (on my '95 Riv Road) were taking a 50 ish mile route that I had mapped out some months back for the local club. On a past group ride, we made an in course adjustment, because one of the county roads, leading to some nice lake views, turned out to be coarse stones and red clay. Today, it was just the two of us, and Frank said, "Wanna go explore that dirt road? We have the tires." He was (is this the "in" word?) rocking (I can't keep "curating" or "palping" straight either) Bontrager Invert 35s and I had Maxy Fasty 33.4s. Both were peachy keen on backroads rough rider stuff. It's nice to have bikes that basically can go anywhere and do anything that the legs of the operator can push it to. Re: [RBW] Rim / Spoke Cracks... Should I be concerned?
Rick, while your rims probably won't fall off anytime soon they should eventually be replaced. Those eyelet cracks are sometimes indicative of an overall tensioning problem with the wheel. I've had eyelets crack from too high tension (on a single-speed with no dish) and I've noticed them on one of my wheels that had too low tension. I also know that some rims are more prone to that. To date I have NOT had that happen to any of my Sun CR18s or Velocity Synergys. Everyone's mileage varies. I too live in Portland and, like Mike, have a Quickbeam and dislike changing gears/fixing rear flats with fenders. So, I think the SKS p45s will come off in a few weeks. [RBW] Re: Where are you and when will you take the fenders off for the dry season?
I live SW of Portland, where there are a number of gravel roads. One bike is fendered all year long, and the Quickbeam is fendered most of the time. I don't remove the fenders seasonally - just as I get a whim. I can feel a change-up coming on. The mountain bike never has fenders; getting muddy is part of the fun. Although the RacerM appears to weigh more than your Mafac Racers. 113g per wheel for braze on. By the way, I checked out Shimano Ultegra Caliper weight: 294g per caliper. Not sure how much the braze on posts weight, but I doubt it would be much more, if as much, as the differenced between RacerM and Ultegras. So goes one more reason not to make a braze on version of the Roadeo. [RBW] Re: Racer M Alive!
I'm still perplexed by waterford. When the AHH was new, and being built exclusively by Waterford, I tried to order one with canti studs and a crown braze-on to screw a metal fender into, and the quote for that was also $500. That's how I ended up with the Ebisu All Purpose. Anyway, I'm sure these are great brakes. I have the neos on the Ebisu and love them and am about to take possession of a Bilenky tandem with posted racers. I look forward to adding these to my Rambouillet. As for 33.3 and fenders; I don't think the fender width or brake is the limiting factor on that frame; it's the fork blade length not leaving enough height for fenders and the 33. I think in the last decade there has been a real surge in really good American made components and I'm glad to support that. These brakes are expensive but I expect them to out live me. [RBW] Re: powder coat and decals?
No you don't have to clear-coat over the decals- they are the 'top- mount' kind if i'm not mistaken. They are extremely durable though. [RBW] OK. So, I won't be buying a Roadeo.
It was a gorgeous day here, so I took a ride on my Canti-Rom -- the first ride on it in weeks. I dusted it off (literally, as it was stored behind my table saw) and pumped up the small tires (28s) and rode 34 miles through Marin and back to the city. What a great riding bike. No Roadeo need apply. It always amazes me how much faster the Rom is over the Atlantis (35mm tires) and the Quickbeam (33 mm tires). I really forget sometimes how snappy it feels when compared to those others in the stable. A lot of fun. I should do that more often! What hubs do you have on the Canti Rom? Reason I ask, I have Maxi Cars on the Bruce Gordon. Rims are Velocity Dyad. Tires 38 Marathon Supremes. It is going to be awhile before I have time for a camping trip, so I have the racks off. Today I took it for about a 40 mile ride. The Gordon is not a fast bike. It is not meant to be. But those Maxi Cars roll so well I was able to fall into a great cadence. Before I knew it, I was zipping by just about everyone on the paths. Still not all that crowded here in Chicago. The day looked sumptuous, but there was a definite nip in the air and a bit of a wind. Weather person says tomorrow is going to be miserable, then a warming trend that should see a block of 70s. A bunch of the SoCalians got together to watch the bike races in my little town. Good stuff there, but even better, we had an excuse to go riding! In one or two pictures someone's even carrying what looks to be a mountain bike. Must have been a very early one, I'd guess. Those photos make me realize how boring the terrain is around here. [RBW] Test Ride-O-Rama
Went over to the RBWHQ&L to pick up my Rich-built QB replacement wheel, and had a grand time bumping into folks, chatting with Grant, meeting Harry in person (FINALLY!) and enjoying a series of loops and circuits around the local streets on a variety of bicycles. Sam Hillborne, Betty Foy, SOMA San Marco (Amos), and the Roadeo. Each had their personality, but all had the Rivendell Ride. Also got to check out the newly painted Hunqapillar Prototype frame, looking resplendent in grey and orange.
