[RBW] new (to me) Rambouillet

2010-05-25 Thread Stuart Fletcher
Hello all,

Well, I can finally post here as a Rivendell owner, pretty exciting!

About a month ago everything finally came together and a Rambouillet
frame I bought last year is now a *bike* and is rolling the streets of
Seattle. I'm very happy with it so far -- smooth is the word I keep
coming back to to describe the ride. Just really smooth! That was
true with the pre-fender Jack Browns (greens) but is proving to be
equally true with the be-fendered Grand Bois Cypres.

I've been putting off posting until I got the fenders on, which
happened Saturday. There are still a couple things I'm pondering
changing, but there's no nagging I gotta change that! aspect. It's
ready to ride!

Here's a set on flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ratrocket/sets/72157624126974480/

or: http://bit.ly/coKwm8

The frame is a 60cm, orange. It's a mongel-y build -- barely anything
matches (and there's not a single Shimano part on it -- which wasn't
on purpose, it just happened). Some of the highlights are TA Pro5
crank (with 42/26 rings), Campagnolo front derailer, Suntour XC Pro
rear derailer, Silver downtube shifters, lugged Nitto stem, Nitto
Noodles (narrow ones -- 42cm), Suntour Superbe Pro brake levers
pulling on Mafac Racers (with non-Mafac-style Kool Stop pads,
however), American Classic seatpost holding up a B17 Champion Special
(that started life honey colored), and the wheels are Torelli Masters
(bane of my tire-changing existence!), Suzue Campy-copy hubs and an
IRD 7 speed freewheel. Honjo fluted fenders round it out. Plus the
previously mentioned Grand Bois Cypres tires. I guess those aren't
highlights, that's everything! Oh, pedals: Black Ops platform pedals.

Some thoughts on a few of the parts: I hadn't used downtube shifters
in awhile, so that was a change in direction for me. So far so good
-- just another way to shift.

I've been wanting to try narrower bars. I have 46cm Noodles on my
(previous?) main bike, an 80s Specialized Expedition. I'm sort of
narrow-bodied, so I thought the 42s might suit me. Again, so far so
good. Also, I like the feeling of changing from wider to narrower and
vice versa when I switch between bikes.

The gearing was a big question for me. I've never had a wide range
double before, so didn't know exactly what direction to go with it,
but I knew I wanted to try it out. My one worry about the gearing was
that I might want something bigger than 42x13 in some situation (an
incredibly strong tailwind perhaps?). So far it hasn't been a problem
though. And overall the range of gears and shifting pattern (such as
it is) has worked great for the riding I've been doing, which
(unfortunately!) has mostly been around the city and commuting. But
that includes long hills and short steep hills -- up down -- and
long straight flat sections (with plenty of wind lately). Pretty
varied I think, and an all right test of a bike's gearing.

The pedals were a last minute change from using a rat trap-type pedal.
My shop completely sold me on the giant Black Ops studded platform
pedals and I'm glad they did. They're so grippy and the big platform
is really comfortable. I think these are my favorite pedals I've
ridden since I quit clipless a couple years ago. Black Ops is a JB
Importers brand.

The American Classic seatpost is just for fun. I hope it doesn't
break my saddle rails. Or is it the seatpost itself that's reputed to
break?

That's about all. I think there are fun times ahead! I'm really
looking forward to riding this bike a lot this spring summer
beyond.

Thanks for reading/looking if you've read this far. If you see me
rolling around Seattle (or anywhere), say hi. (Or nod in my
direction... or... something!)

The bike is used about 50 percent trails and dirt.

I use a 2x8 with the 38t 52t chainrings and 12-28 xtr or 12-32 if I am
feeling whimpy. Rgith now I have suntour bar cons, but it is hard to
shift when you can't move your hand off the bars due to the terrain.

Have any of you all stripped the torx head on the levers?

[RBW] Re: mounting Nitto M-12 front rack on a very long fork

2010-05-25 Thread jlvota
I just measured the fork on my 58cm Bianchi San Jose that I have
installed a m-12 on, and the measurement that you took was only 10cm
on my bike. I recall having to slightly bend the rack when first put
it on to get it to mount level, so I'm not sure if it would work on
your bike or not (but I would bet that if you did get it to fit, you
are going to have to wrestle with it for a while).

Since your bike also does not have a hole on both sides of the fork
crown, I would personally go a different route; maybe there is just
something in me that cringes at the thought of taking a drill to a
bike. Something like the Old Man Mountain Sherpa may be best for a
bike that has a fork geometry similar to a mountain bike; it does not
require a hole in the fork crown, and it seems to be very adjustable.

If you are going to drill out the crown, I would strongly recommend
taking the fork off and using a drill press. It is going to be much
easier to drill the hole using the fender mount as a guide to bring
the bit through the front using a press.

Hopefully this helps, keep us updated as to what route you take; I am
curious to see how it works out either way.

don't fit all forks, depending on the distance between the fork crown

Can anyone tell me if that is going to work? (Here is a

Also, note that the crown is only drilled in the back to accept a

planning to use a drill bit that just fits through the fender mounting
hole to drill a pilot hole through the front part of the fork crown,
and then use the correct size (8mm?) to widen the hole in the front
 and back of the crown.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose, Thumbies and Rapid Rise

2010-05-25 Thread Joe Bernard
My beef with Rapid Rise is it eliminates a cool shifting procedure:
pushing both shifters the same direction so you can drop down to a
smaller (easier) front ring and smaller (harder) rear cog at the same
time. Often, when dropping to a smaller front ring, the gearing change
is too dramatic and causes spinout. If you can move to one higher gear
in the back at the same you grab a lower one in front, it makes the
ratio change narrower. Very simple and natural when both shifters are
moved the same direction.

wouldn't I want that to be a downshift?  When I am looking for an
easier gear (ie. riding up hill in the wrong gear), I'm thinking I
won't want to take my hand off the bar.  For this reason, is a top-
  normal der more appropriate?

Assuming indexed thumbies, on the tops of the bars, using a Rapid Rise
rear derailleur will do the opposite of what you want. That is,
pushing the right lever forward will cause the bike to go into a
higher gear. My wife's bike is set up this way (with a Rapid Rise rear
derailleur) and that's how it works.

[RBW] Re: mounting Nitto M-12 front rack on a very long fork

2010-05-25 Thread Earl Grey
Thanks for the advice. The fork is built super-tough, for serious off-
roading. I live in Thailand and don't have a drill press, and this is
my junker, ahem, I mean trusty old stead. If I ruin the fork, I can
finally go and replace this 20 year old frame with a Kogswell P/R, so
I am not too worried. :)

But I am debating whether to take the fork with me on my next trip,
and maybe have it re-raked for a bit less trail, at which point I
guess I could ask the frame builder to drill out the crown, and maybe
add Riv-style mid fork braze-ons for a Mini front rack...

No sure how much money I want to throw at this bike, though...

Each time there's a change they all chime in about how wonderful the new

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose, Thumbies and Rapid Rise

2010-05-25 Thread Ginz
Thanks Joe, that's a good point. I think I'll dig up an old top-
normal from the parts bin and give that a try. I love my rapid rise
but I believe that top-normal will win this contest!

Question #2: Has anyone set up their thumbies below the bar, in which
case, rapid rise might win (ie. pushing with thumb releases cable
tension)? Is it possible to set them up below the bar?

Ginz

On May 25, 2:36 am, Joe Bernard joer...@gmail.com wrote:
My beef with Rapid Rise is it eliminates a cool shifting procedure:
pushing both shifters the same direction so you can drop down to a
smaller (easier) front ring and smaller (harder) rear cog at the same
time. Often, when dropping to a smaller front ring, the gearing change
is too dramatic and causes spinout. If you can move to one higher gear
in the back at the same you grab a lower one in front, it makes the
ratio change narrower. Very simple and natural when both shifters are
 moved the same direction.

[RBW] Re: mounting Nitto M-12 front rack on a very long fork

2010-05-25 Thread Ken Yokanovich
You could install a 1 star nut from the underside inside the steer
tube. I would then use a Mark's rack and modify the fork mount as
required. Save the trouble of drilling your fork.

On May 25, 1:53 am, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote:

No sure how much money I want to throw at this bike, though...

it on to get it to mount level, so I'm not sure if it would work on
your bike or not (but I would bet that if you did get it to fit, you
are going to have to wrestle with it for a while).

On May 24, 10:52 pm, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote:

don't fit all forks, depending on the distance between the fork crown
hole and the canti bosses. The distance on my fork from center of
canti boss to center of fork crown hole (measured diagonally) is 11cm.
Can anyone tell me if that is going to work? (Here is a
   photo:http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/4439615305/in/photostream/)

Also, note that the crown is only drilled in the back to accept a
fender mounting bolt. Any advice on drilling out the fork crown? I am
planning to use a drill bit that just fits through the fender mounting
hole to drill a pilot hole through the front part of the fork crown,
and then use the correct size (8mm?) to widen the hole in the front
   and back of the crown.

   Thanks,

   Gernot

Thanks for the compliments! It's easier to put something nice
together when you're working with such good source material as the
Rambouillet.

I assume you're in friction mode on the shifters?

Yep, friction all the way. It has the Dia Comp/Rivendell Silver
shifters on the downtube, so no clicking for me (just a little
ratcheting). I'll say too -- the shifting is super smooth and
precise, no surprises front or rear. The front shifting is as crisp
as the rear, and doing a one-handed (right-handed) double shift in
either direction is not a problem either. Not a technique I had
before, but it seems suited to this gearing setup.

I haven't used the new shape Ergo levers; I have the old shape, like
these:

http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8description=Veloce+10+Ergopower+LeversvendorCode=CAMPmajor=1minor=20

A few years ago, the (lower grade) Veloce were essentially the same as
Centaur (higher), as far as the innards go; the only thing different
was the shape of the shift blade, which reduced the weight by like 5
grams.

I don't know what the difference is between Veloce and Centaur in the
new hood shape, other than one has resin blades and the other carbon
blades.

But as Michael said above, the Centaur also come with alloy levers:
http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=25206category=771

If you're doing CX where there's a risk of taking a digger, the alloy
might stand up better in a spill than carbon.

On the row with the Merlin, click on the thumbnail on the right. Both

Gorgeous. Don't forget to send some photos to the cyclofiend

Rambouillet is my all time favorite bike. It just has excellent road
manners - climbs well, is rock solid on high speed descents, and
comfortable for all day riding. I have long regretted not getting the
orange. I hesitated until I saw one in person on a ferry leaving
Victoria, but by then they weren't available in my size.

I have the hammered Honjos on my Ram, and they have held up very
well. I have the fluted Honjos on my Ebisu, which I use for
commuting. That bike sees a lot of rough road ever day and it has
more of a challenge to keep the fenders (and lots of other parts)
tightened down and rattle free.

Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy every mile on that bike.

 Here's a set on flickr:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ratrocket/sets/72157624126974480/

 or:http://bit.ly/coKwm8

(Or nod in my
 direction... or... something!)

[RBW] Re: Mixing Campy 10 and Shimano 9 - Zinn article?

2010-05-25 Thread bfd

a strong preference between the models of Campy- not record obviously,
but chorus seems a bit pricey and the veloce  seem about right- how
does the centaur line hold up in your opinion?  Would I be a fool to
 stick to the centaur?

I have older Record 9 ergos on one bike and Centaur 9 ergos on
another. Despite the fact that the Record is lighter and has ball
bearings in it versus bushings on the Centaur, there's nothing
noticeable about the shifting. Unless weight is a factor, which it
doesn't sound like it, get the Centaur.

I think I would be sort of mad if I crashed, and smashed up a pair of
the chorus ergos.  Are any of you running a triple?

Crashes happen. Like others have stated, get the ones that fit your
hands. There are actually three generations of Campy ergos, the
pointy hood ones that were only 8 and 9 speed from 1997 to about
1999; the round hood ones that were 9 and 10 speed from about 1999
to 2006; and the latest version from about 2006/07 to present.

As for running a triple, unlike Shimano, where you have to get
specific double or triple front STI shifters, ALL campy ergos are
triple compatible because of the ratcheting design of the front
shifter. Note, the Escape or QR front ergos from 2007-08 or 09, are
more Shimano-ish and probably requires the use of a specific front
der.

The bike is used about 50 percent trails and dirt.

All Campy ergos should be able to handle any kind of road.

 I use a 2x8 with the 38t 52t chainrings and 12-28 xtr or 12-32 if I am
feeling whimpy.  Rgith now I have suntour bar cons, but it is hard to
shift when you can't move your hand off the bars due to the terrain.

Integrated shifters solved this problem! The key is to find one that
fits your hand.

Have any of you all stripped the torx head on the levers?

Older round hood style ergos don't use torx head bolts. However, if
the latest version uses it, I suggest getting a good set of torx
wrenches from Sears or if you can afford better, Snap-on!

Good Luck!

who I tripped on last week googling around who has them NOS in their
current inventory, selling for around $50.

They're great shifters. Just don't let your bike fall down and land on
them so they bend the shifter sideways. I did, and the sideways force
popped off the triangular sheet metal cover over the inner works. After
a couple of weeks of riding around with a floppy left shifter, the
little sprag that engages the ratchet fell out. Fortunately, that
happened when the bike was on the workstand rather than on the road; it
wouldn't have been fun to finish the ride in the granny ring!

[RBW] Re: Best Bicycle Route into Los Angeles/West Hollywood-ish

2010-05-25 Thread Jim M.
I'd stick to the coast. It's more pleasant than the inland route.
Also, if you go inland, you climb over the Santa Monica mountains
twice -- once to get to the valley and again to get over to W.
Hollywood. The coast mostly has a shoulder, but watch out for parked
cars opening doors. I'd do that route early in the morning on a

Joel: I actually had the Cyclofiend DT shifter t-shirt in the back of
my mind when I was deciding on the shifters. I guess I can safely
join the club now :)

Pretty cool to see photos from a bike shop with 3 count 'em 3 Rivs on the
 floor.

It's an unusually great bike shop. After I put my camera away the
Atlantis left and Ro rolled in on his Kustard Kogswell P/R to join the
two Rivendells. (Everyone knows Ro, right??)

Ryan: that *is* Aaron's in West Seattle. I live right up the street
(Oregon California) and they've been my shop since I've been back in
Seattle (6 or 7 years now). I'd known about Bridgestone (still have
my bought-new 1991 MB-1) but Aaron's shop helped hip me to Rivendell
after not paying attention to bikes for several years. So they are
sort of integral to my Rivendell experience. Aaron's is very focused
on practical cycling, plus it's a fun place to hang out.

to get some nicer pictures first though... if only we could get some

Re: [RBW] Re: Best Bicycle Route into Los Angeles/West Hollywood-ish

2010-05-25 Thread andrew hill
I'd suggest the coast too... but once you hit Venice Beach, maybe you would
want to pick up the Ballona Creek bike path (along LA River tributary) and
take that 7 miles into Culver City - then there are lots of cool little parts
of LA between West and Central LA.. to go cross-town that far south you prob
want to head up Fairfax and then east on 8th - it becomes really nice tree
shady neighborhoods there for a while. after that you can move up to 4th, if
you want to get up towards hollywood / koreatown / griffith park.

best,
andrew (los angeles)

I'd stick to the coast. It's more pleasant than the inland route.
Also, if you go inland, you climb over the Santa Monica mountains
twice -- once to get to the valley and again to get over to W.
Hollywood. The coast mostly has a shoulder, but watch out for parked
cars opening doors. I'd do that route early in the morning on a
weekend if you can to avoid the beach traffic. If it's a weekday, wait
until after the commute rush. When you get to Santa Monica head inland
on Entrada to Ocean Ave, which will take you up to San Vicente Blvd.
San Vicente will take you into Westwood. I'd probably take Santa
Monica Blvd to West Hollywood from there but don't expect a fun ride.
It will be heavy traffic and you'll need to be alert.

I haven't lived in LA for a long time, so maybe some current Angelenos
 will chime in with alternatives.
