Re: [RBW] Re: Vitruvian Shoes

Chris:

When I placed my order for a pair of Symmetry II shoes, I got an email back
saying that these run a tad smaller than the original Symmetry shoes I ordered
last year, and suggesting I move up a size. That's pretty attentive service
from
anyone, let alone someone closing up shop. I took the advice and the fit of the
new shoes is good. Either pair on a Grip King pedals makes a comfy long
distance
set up.

I've been a big fan of Vitruvian shoes for years. I'm sorry they are
going out of business.

I just ordered three pair, to tide me over for a year or so. I will
probably go ahead and order even more, because they are just great!
(And $25 is too good to pass up.)

[RBW] Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread kevin lindsey
Greetings.
I'm doing a rebuild and am considering switching from drop bars to
something like the albatross or the dove bars, mostly for aesthetic
reasons. I use the bike (a 1973 Schwinn World Voyageur, not a
Rivendell) for longish fun rides, errands, and general purpose
riding. Question I have for the group is whether there are ever times
when you wished you had drop bars instead of non-drops. In other
words, are there clear advantages of one over the other?
I like drops, but find that I almost never move my hands from the
upper part of the bar, making me wonder whether I'd miss them very
much if I switched.
Thanks,
Kevin

This is a bad reason to change bars on a bike you do long rides on,
unless you subscribe to the idea "that one must suffer to be
beautiful" or you find such bars as comfortable as drops. I myself
have tried all sorts of bars but always come back to drops simply
because they are more comfortable for me.

Plenty of room for all sorts of handlebars. I find for around town I
really appreciate the albatross bars but I can get more comfortable
on longer rides on a set of noodles.

I don't think it has to be an either-or.

Re: [RBW] Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread Curtis Schmitt
I totally agree with Seth.

I just picked up a Romulus two weeks ago that came set-up very nicely with
Albatross bars and bar-end shifters. I absolutely love these bars for
commuting, coffee shop runs and rides to brunch, especially when wearing a
suit or sport jacket, but have a 50-mile (each way) bicycle camping trip
coming up Labor Day weekend and I am dreading trying to make the trip with
these bars. Being a long-time Noodle-lover, that is what I'd want on the Rom
for next weekend's trip ideally.

And as Seth mentioned earlier in the month, the DaVinci splitters or
BruceGordonQS2s make different bar options available quite
conveniently. As the Romulus
is so versatile, makes sense to me to have at least two bar options for my
needs so this is the route I'll go next week if timing allows.

Re: [RBW] Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread Ray Shine
Kevin -- I switched two of my Riv's from drops to Albatross, and have never
looked back. For city riding, and lots of road rides, the more upright
position
is an advantage. On my Quickbeam, I switched to Alba and find that I can still
"climb" out of the saddle by grabbing the forward bend of the bar. Works just
fine. I don't tape that section either because the cool metal actually feels
good on my hot hands. I like that a lot. I also ride out there a lot when
going into wind. Works just as well as hoods on drops, in my opinion.

[RBW] Re: More uses for John's Irish strap

2010-08-27 Thread jinxed
I made a watch strap.

I had an old nato strap that came apart years ago but I saved all the
hardware. Cleaning out my desk drawer I found it again. Curious if I
had any webbing laying around to remake it, I had the brain fart of
checking out the width of the irish straps. Bingo! It was the perfect
18mm width. I pulled out the sewing machine and cobbled it together.
My plan is to use it on the Mondaine RR watch I plan to buy with my
dividend...hopefully they will still be carrying them by then. Till
then it resides on my old Timex Auto. Unfortunately it needs a
service.

I own an Atlantis set up as a touring bike with 700*35 Marathon
Supremes. It rides beautifully on roads. I too have been thinking of
adding another Riv, possibly a Bombadil or Hunq. I also considered the

suggestions from others of adding an AHH,my new thoughts are about the
Hillborne. How does that compare, is it more of an Atlantis or AHH?

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar or Bombadil for the trails?

2010-08-27 Thread RJM
The AHH and the Bombadil or a Hunqapillar might be the solution,
sticking with the Bombadil would keep me strapped to 650 wheels which
isn't a terrible thing. I'm not sure what route I am going to go with
yet, I will probably wind up ordering the first bike in a month or
two, so I have some time.

Right now I am riding a Trek 7.5 FX so I have a rideable bike for
rails to trails type stuff and the road, but no singletrack capable
bike. I would like to replace the FX with a Rivendell though. I have
some thinking to do though, but I think the first one will probably be
a trail worthy bike.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread JoelMatthews
I use Albatross bars for touring and am very happy with them.

Drops are very popular among the U.S. touring crowd. European, South
American and Asian cycle tourists are far more likely to use swept
back bars (many of which are similar but inferior to Albatross) and
even straight bars for touring.

It really is a personal choice. However, Albatross bars can and do
make a wonderful touring choice for many.

[RBW] New bike and help me find a headlight for my moustache bars

2010-08-27 Thread Adam Kimball
Wow, I finally made it! About four years ago I first saw an AHH, and
I lusted for it. I ended up cheaping out a bit and buying a new Ram
that showed up on ebay. Hardly cheaping out, I know, but the complete
bike was only about $100 more than the AHH frame. This time, I found
the frame locally (thanks Don!) and just had it built up with a hodge-
podge of parts that keeps it real, but also kept it cheap. I'll have
time to upgrade this and that later. Whether I will like this bike
more than my Big Dummy is an open question (but also an apples and
oranges comparison). Anyway, I love it - and thanks to this list for
all the helpful advice. I'll post some pics soon.

That said, I need a new cheap headlight. I'll put a generator hub and
a light on it someday, but for now - money must be saved. I tried to
put on my Planet Bike light but it wouldn't fit around the moustache
bars, the cable which runs under the tape, and some pretty thick
leather tape. If any of you have been through this issue - what light
did you settle on? Something under $30 ideally.

Thanks,
Adam

2010-08-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Look at Velo Orange (or a good bike shop) for the Minoura Besso Holder
which can clamp to you fork leg.
http://www.velo-orange.com/mibeliho.html I've made my own out of 2"
sections of handlebar and hose clamps (dremel the fork side to fit the
contour of the fork blade) and they actually don't look as bad as they
sound. Very sturdy, too. But the MB is a lot easier and ought to work
well, tho' I don't like their clamp design for its fiddliness --
again, despite that, it seems to clamp well.

I got the same message when I ordered two more pair. On their advice I

Sorry to see them go. In my view, they may be closing the doors, but they

RBW content: I first heard of Vitruvian through a recommendation by Grant

[RBW] Re: Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread GeorgeS
Even if one never get into the drops, a drop bar gives one numerous
hand positions - tops, ramps, hoods, side of the ramps and so forth.
With Albatross bars or mostache-type bars (particularly if the center
of the bar is loaded with computers, lights and other gadgets), one is
basically limited to one hand position at the grips. For riding
around town and short commutes this works fine: I have Jentensa (sp?)
swept-back bars on my commuter and I love them. But for any kind of
longer ride, or a real trip, I want drops for the comfort. And
sometimes I really need the drops. I took a trip this summer in NE
Vermont and Quebec that required a lot of climbing and descending.
With a load fore and aft, I always felt more in control when I was in
the drops, particularly on long fast descents.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Kevin, this is pretty much one of those things that you just have to
do and find out for yourself. Every type of handlebar has positives
and negatives associated with it. If you do get some A-bars, I would
recommend getting the steel ones and the long & tall Technomic (non-
dlx) stem. Those two make a wonderful combination IMHO. Wrap the
forward curves with some extra cloth tape to have a nice extra aero
position to use on the straights.

If it doesn't work out, you can re-sell them quite easily here on the
RBW list. :-)

[RBW] Re: Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread Michael Rivers
I look at the Alba/Moustache/Noodle as a range of bars for a range of
positions.

My Alba bike is a Kogswell P/R with fenders and a front basket for
commuting and trips to the market. Although I can use the front of
the bar to get more aero, it is only for brief periods, and mostly I'm
sitting upright with my hands on the end of the bar. Trips are always
under an hour.

My 'stache touring bike is an Atlantis wanna-be (1985 steel trek MTB,
650b) that has bar end shifters, and I like to be forward for when I'm
on gravel and single track with loaded panniers. I can sit up,
relatively, for short periods of time with my hands on the ends of the
bars, but is isn't as comfortable as the Alba bars. Woodchipper bars
are another version that fit into this category.

My Ram, and QB have drop bars, Noodles, as they are road/ bike path
bikes, and anything longer than 2 hours I need multiple hand
positions. I'm also riding at higher speeds, and being aero is more
important than when I'm touring or going to work.

Re: [RBW] New bike and help me find a headlight for my moustache bars

2010-08-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Does the Ram have fork leg braze ons? They do work -- I've mounted
lights using these. I like this little gadget, though.

Another option, via Peter Jon White if not others, is the brake bolt
mount: it holds the light just above a caliper (also works with
cantis, etc. if you have that hole) and forward of the bottom headset
race. I prefer this one myself.

Reiteratint that bars are a personal choice - it is not crrect to say
Alba do not have multi-hand positions.

I do not load my alba bars with a bunch of junk. Even if I did, there
are several comfortable places to hold the bars on tours. In any
event, in my experience I spent 90% of my tours on the tops when I
used to use drops.

Finally, you can go in an aero position on Alba bars. Maybe not full
out racing bike aero, but who goes full out racing bike aero with 30
pounds of kit anyway?

Re: [RBW] Re: The final frame drawing lesson is up

2010-08-27 Thread Bill Connell
Yes, i ended up with 12. Just last night i compiled the pages, bought
some big graph paper and gave it a try. It's a very interesting lesson
in the considerations, much more to it than the 2 basic angles. I'm
going to do a little more research to understand rake/trail and how it
looks on paper - i think i have it straight, but maybe not. I'm used
to thinking in terms of trail rather than rake.

Now that i've been through it once, i'm going to draw up a couple more
to play with different angles and TT slopes, it's a fun exercise.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bars vs. Non-drops

2010-08-27 Thread Garth

You just gotta try Albatross bars to know for yourself. They are
fun . I love the 56cm width. and there is no drop bar that wide! I
had some 52cm dirt Drop bars, but they were only 46cm at the brakes,
so I gifted them to another.

You don't have to limit your hand positions at all!! I have about
12-13 inches of usable space to roam. I use Tektro bar end brake
levers and thumbshifters, seen here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11316...@n04/3645057344/in/set-72157624156809417/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11316...@n04/3644420885/in/set-72157624156809417/

I suppose if bar end brake levers were not made ... I wouldn't use
this bar either, as I hate the standard brake lever congestion on the
bars. .. but . . . they do make them and they are perfect for
me.

Aerodynamics? That's just mind worry. Do you think the Hawk or the
Eagle or any other bird worries about aerodynamics ? They just do
what they do without concern for those around them.

Check out the Jitensha flat bar (by Nitto). It's a great "flat"
handlebar with a moderate backsweep. Perfect for brisk rides around
town where sitting up a little bit is more fun.

I'm all for drops for long or fast rides; gives lots of hand/body
positions.

Hey Patrick .. I'm laughing ! Sometimes the context, depth and
spirit of what we write gets lost in this very limited form of
communication we call the written word. Well . probably most of
the time it does !

I don't mean to offend anyone here. I may ... but I can't control
that. Sometimes the unconscious things we ALL do need to be brought to
light. One of those things is worry about keeping up with the great
unknown. like speed . Fast is never fast enough! A race that we
lose every single time. We humans think we're so smart, but we're
really rather stupid. The mind gets lauded for it's great
discoveries yet we are all tortured by it every day with our
impatience ... and there nothing we can do to stop it, despite our
best efforts. I guess that is kind of heavy! . but it doesn't
need to be . it can be liberating . seeing the craziness for
what it is. We may experience it ... but we don't have to BE it!

I learned all this while riding my Albatross bars :)

Re: [RBW] OT: Happy Commuter

2010-08-27 Thread Rob Harrison

Sweet! He is clearly very proud and happy!

We had that moment just two years ago. :) Like you we live about a
mile from our son's school. Last year we split the commute between
riding with him on his own bike and taking the Metro bus. The only
issue we've had is that often other parents pick him up for a playdate
at their house and forget to get his bicycle. So...we added another
option, a Bike Friday Triple Traveler: It converts to a tandem, which is the configuration we'll probably
get the most use out of. Or I suppose we could pick up one of his
friends too! As of tomorrow we'll have been car-free for a year, so
it's nice to have options.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT: Happy Commuter

2010-08-27 Thread Rob Harrison
It was Richard Vallens Lovemarks letter that really sold me on the
idea of the Bike Friday tandem:

He writes:

"My Bike Friday Family Tandem is a flying carpet of great magic, the
perfect solution to the eternal quest of doing something with your
kids where you can both have fun and truly communicate. My rides with
my son (14 now, 8 when we bought the bike) on our Family Tandem are
the BEST, absolutely the best memories he and I have. We’ve had a
complete Blast! on this bike – physically close enough to talk and
hear well (and conspire), with the bicycling effortlessly filling any
gaps in conversation. I’ve learned everything about my son by being
close enough to hear as his thoughts and impressions burble out during
long Family Tandem rides. So many times, it was just us in our own
world, father and son on the Red Bike. Bike Friday is my Lovemark.

will have to incorporate some "Ride in, car home" trips this year

The simpleone is intriguing. First suggestions:

1. nuke the logos from the cranks
2. nuke the logos from the hubs
3. Get the polish/anodizing on the hubs and cranks to match. Doesn't
matter which one, really, as long as they match.

From the pictures at least the cranks seem like they are a
dark-tinted polished aluminum? Not a look I'd want, personally and
that mismatched to the hubs just makes it look less like a unified
whole and more like a hodgepodge.

For a sample, that is, of course, no problem - but for the final
version I'd hope that would be all smoothed out.

I like the Diagonal tube... but the 54 is the best fit for me, which
has a single top tube.still thinking a disc brake would be a good
thing with those big fat tires too.

I'm more interested in the Simpleone at this point. I'll have to wait
until later next week to see what's under the wrapping. I'm OK
waiting as I'm driving up to the Bay area to pick up my "new to me"

[RBW] Re: Hunqa and SO update on Riv site!

2010-08-27 Thread rperks
Disc brakes come with good and bad, I have been an advocate, but I
think the dishing of the wheels from the left side opens up greater
inherent weaknesses. If the canti brakes are not enough, or the flex
in the stays is a bit much you can always throw a booster arch on it.
It is not like you could overbuild the thing any more.

The simple one does seem good in concept, it will be interesting to
see where the price falls for tiwan stuff, makes me regret not
grabbing a quickbean in any color, kept hoping something better than
silver would be next.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqa and SO update on Riv site!

2010-08-27 Thread cyclotourist
Hey Ian, great to hear you have one in route! I'm 6ft, and thinking the 54
would be best, especially if the TT is a bit longer than originally planned
(that was a mentioned change). The 58 gives long enough reach and ability
to get the bars up real high, but would have very minimal stand-over which I
need for those off-camber trail dabs! Plus the 54 doesn't have the
horizontal tube, which isn't terrible, just unnecessary for me.

So yeah, post away when you get it, it'll be great to see!

Thanks!
David

[RBW] Dario Pegoretti film

2010-08-27 Thread Michael Mann
I know this is late notice, but the newest film on the Rapha site -
available to view TODAY ONLY - is, IMHO, the best of the three. It features
the master frame builder Dario Pegoretti in his shop and in conversation.
Check it out. Quick.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with discs, probably even better for loaded descents
(heat), but weaker wheels and over-built forks don't intrigue me too much.
V-brakes really stop pretty darn good. So do cantis for that matter! :-)

Maybe they're going to sell DVDs. Maybe small windows of preciousness
is Internet 3.0
I don't know. I do think John Slawta and Dario Pegoretti should have a
reality show paint-off.

Surface decoration is so not my thing (ironic, as an artist).
I see Rapha has coined the term "roadwear," which I actually like. It
sounds like lampposts and bike lanes.

[RBW] Re: WTB: midge, junebug, woodchipper, etc

2010-08-27 Thread Philip Williamson
Kludge! I used the same word to describe my Delta extender and short
stem combo for my Midge bars. Without good stem choices, any dirt drop
bar setup is going to be kludgey.
http://www.biketinker.com/2010/projects/stems-for-dirt-drop-bars/

I have long thought that Rivendell could offer a Nitto stem that
approximated the old Salsa steel stems with some rise. And a dirt drop
bar.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/3663090328/
That combination on the Quickbeam ties the whole room together.

Of the Midge vs WTB classic, the WTB wins (for me) hands down.
