[RBW] Re: My A Homer Hilsen is set to arrive TODAY!

2010-09-30 Thread Amit
Franklyn,

Thanks for the link! They're finally on - looking sweet - but a real
challenge to mount.

I'm hoping that someone sees the previous request to make a movie that
shows each step in detail and takes action - I think it's a gap that
needs to be filled ... AND ... people would probably pay for it ...

I'll take photos in the morning before the morning ride to work ...
the bicycle looks stunning. Oh, one more thing - every time I lift
the bicycle up I'm surprised by its weight. I cannot believe just how
light this bike really is!

Touks off to Rivendell, eh!

I've been using one on and off for about a year or so. I posted a
review on this list some months back, gushing about how much I love
the bag. I love the convenience of handlebar bags, for the
windbreaker, the camera, some chow, maybe an extra bottle on a really
long day. This one works swell - - not too much fussin and fightin to
get it mounted, holds everything i need. I'm a fan.

New photos up now:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/49513...@n04/sets/72157625002558252/

I had a terrible time mounting Honjo fenders today.

I've checked the web, the RBW Owners Bunch threads and Flickr with no
avail. Does anyone have a detailed step-by-step guide that makes it
easy for a rookie? If not, can an all-star document it next time they
install a pair, just like the Rivendell team does in the Youtube
videos?

Thanks in advance ~

MBB,

Great work. Go ahead and take the time to trim the stays close to
flush with the top of the platrack. It's worth the effort. Do it
clean like Mark does in the video. Then if/when you run a SlickerSack
it'll fit right off the back, and you'll be able to fit large flat
items on your Platrack with ease.

[RBW] Re: Seattle Riv Ride: 10:10 on 10/10/10

2010-09-30 Thread amoll68
Finally - a ride I want to take, and an open spot on the calendar! I'm
in. Probably only one Pert's Deli - Leschi?

I'll be there with my AHH for coffee. I've been meaning to
circumnavigate Mercer Island for years, so this is very timely. I'm
there rain or shine, as I'm be-fendered, of course.

P.S. Stuart - have fun in Portland, and we'll see you on the next one.
Also, I plan to do one of ABR's rides someday . . .

I see, that makes sense. Not a bad consolation prize I'd say. (I'll
take plenty of photos at the show, btw, and will send the link around
for all those who can't attend.)

> Yah man--Seattle Riv Ride #2--when n' where's it gonna be?

H, so many options! But maybe planning the second is a bit
premature before the first is complete. It might even be bad luck (oh
no!). If I'm around I'll always participate in a ride like this
though. I'll think about routes ideas for future rides...

By the way, I love the 10:10 10/10/10.

(PS: another good Seattle ride (or six) if people aren't aware are the
the Cargo Bike/Picnic rides organized by Aaron's Bicycle Repair &
friends. Rides are always on holidays (July 4, Labor, Memorial, day
after Thanksgiving, Easter, New Years Day), cargo bikes NOT required,
always good food (pot luck, usually grilling involved), beverages, and
a great mix of people. If I'm free I go on these rides & others
should join too. It's a good time. Some info:

Re: [RBW] Re: Stem question; ISO nice stems

You may find that as you raise the bars you will want more reach.
Grant had written something about this in a reader. Can't remember the exact
one but it had an illustration of a guy with mutton chop sideburns showing
how your arms get effectively longer as you raise the handlebars.
So if you raise your bars high enough you can tie your shoe laces without
bending over?

[RBW] Seattle Riv Ride: 10:10 on 10/10/10

2010-09-30 Thread Rob Harrison
San Diego, San Francisco and Portland have RIv Rides--let's try for
one in Seattle! I hear they've happened in the past Brian Hanson
and I have been talking about this. Here's the plan:

We'll depart at 10:10am on 10/10/10 from Pert's Deli. Come earlier for
coffee and pastries. We'll head up the hill and over the I-90 Bridge
for a circumnavigation of Mercer Island, and then head back to Seattle
for lunch if anyone's up for it, possibly at the Madrona Ale House.
Around Mercer Island is about a 2-hour ride for me from my house in
nearby Mt Baker, 'least it was this summer, last time I did it, a
while prior to the STP. (Clearly I'm no speed demon!) We can break
into different speed groups, if enough people show up to make that
worthwhile. Plans may be adjusted, ride shortened or lengthened
depending on who shows up and how we all feel. The forecast looks
fantastic right now.

I'll be on my butterscotch Saluki, wearing wool...;)

Let me know if you think you'll come along, we can wait for you.

Rob in Seattle

By the way

Here's a route guide:
and...

a Google Map of Pert's Deli:

One small correction:

As you might have noticed, the bike has Nitto Moustache bars, not
Albatross. I guess I was too mesmerized by the second toptube to jot
down the information correctly.

[RBW] Re: Rodeo 650B?

2010-09-30 Thread rperks
the CdlV is 670mm dia and the JB is 700mm almost exactly for both, so
I would estimate the drop at 15 - 20 mm with a load on the tire,
unfortunately I was in a hurry to get the wife bike done and the brake
pads on the Roadeo rubbed so I just threw the wheels on to see how
they fit but no test ride.

[RBW] Re: was: Rodeo 650B? --> now: flickr blocked

I work in IT and my advice is don't do things to circumvent internet
security installed by your company. Where I work it's instant
termination and 650b conversions can't be worth that. BUT perhaps
your work is more lenient with such things.

[RBW] Re: Rodeo 650B?

2010-09-30 Thread William
In my humble opinion, a Roadeo would be an absolutely lousy 650B
conversion candidate. There is WAY too much BB drop on a Roadeo to
even consider 650B. A Hilsen/Saluki which is a low BB 650B bike only
has 67mm of drop. A Roadeo has 75mm of drop (or more, depending on
size). Your cranks and BB will be 8mm lower than the bare minimum
that Grant suggests. You'll be scratching your pedals in situations
you never have before. Not good. Your BB height would end up at
~250mm when Grant would tell you the safe minimum is 260mm. Try it on
almost any other road bike BUT a Rivendell, and it'll likely work out
fine.

board thanks to Grant's lessons" Lindsay

I bought a Rambouillet from Hiawatha and since I had a seatpost
already I told them I didn't need it. The problem occurred when I
told them I didn't need a "stem" by accident. So Jim sent me a new
seatpost in the box and I am short one stem. Totally my mistake I
typed the wrong thing.

I actually was just offered a stem for cheap so I am just going to
sell the seatpost now.

What I have is a brand new Nitto Crystal Fellow Seatpost. Never
installed.

http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-crystal-fellow-seatpost-272-x-250/11-031

What I need is a Nitto stem. Preferably a deluxe. Smaller reach
would be better. (8 or 9). Used is fine too as long as it's not
severely scratched up.

I feel, then, that we have narrowed the questions considerably, to "Or
am I just making this up?" Thanks for your patient responses _ I am
relieved now to worry about something else, such as what riding habits
are chewing up my transmission? Rain, silt, the fact that I take pride
in getting up to speed much faster than the adjacent cars when the
light changes? And maybe my perception of lost durability boils down
to this: The older I get, the more I worry about how smoothly my bike
shifts. Shame about getting old.

[RBW] Rodeo 650B?

2010-09-30 Thread rperks
I would likely guess that I am not the first one to fit the 650b wheel
into every bike in the garage the first time you get on home and set
up. I was putting together a 650b conversion for the wife's bike and
thought I would grab a few dimensions on all other potential
conversion bikes in the stable while was at it.

The Roadeo was one of my more interesting canidates. The wheel was
built up with Dyad rims and col de la vie tires that hit the calipers
around 37.5mm or so. you can see a few pics of the front here:

http://flic.kr/p/8Ff5uM
http://flic.kr/p/8FieHJ
http://flic.kr/p/8Ff3Zg

The clearance is tight, 4mm or so, but it fit. Brake reach would be
in the 75mm range. The rear was similar. I would put this in the
possible but why bother catagory. The gain over the Jack Browns while
significant is not that big, and the fender clearance while huge in
the verticle would still be very tight in the width department.

Now the pile of old Trek frames and even the Eisentraut maybe, but
those are discussions for another forum.

We used Neubaum cloth tape, which happens to have a very sticky

would a piece of tape – did I mention it is really sticky stuff? To
top it off, the whole thing got a coat of clear shellac.

Re: [RBW] Re: slickersack experiences?

2010-09-30 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Enjoy, Doug! And I'd love to hear any early impressions you develop.

I've had a PlatRack for a while now and also did some cutting to make it work.
But man is it a nice stable platform. Holds my SaddleSack Medium nicely; I
expect it will work with the large too. But the SlickerSack would be a nice for
camping, I think.

Thomas Lynn Skean
