I like those!

My favorite riding trousers are a pair of woolen thrift store
Polo-brand golf trousers. I cut the bottoms off and relocated the
adjusty buckles at the waistband to the bottom of the leg. Here in
Esteban's photo I was wearing them while adventuring in the Santa
Monicas with the Riv Bunch last year:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/3894982599/sizes/o/in/photostream/

I find little need for anything shorter or lighter, as I don't get
overheated wearing these knickers even on hot days. Wool jerseys
and/or long sleeves, on the other hand, do get me feeling quite warm.

I find that a thick fabric works best for me, saddle comfort-wise. I
like to ride in boxer shorts and on leather saddles, and thin fabrics
can bunch up under my sit bones and chafe, but a thick fabric like
reasonably thick wool does not bunch up. I'm always on the lookout at
thrift stores, and I have a few pairs of trousers waiting for me to
get out the sewing machine.

[RBW] Re: big man 650b

2010-10-11 Thread Oliver S.
I recently converted a 63cm bike and have been loving it. I commute
over rough and smooth city roads and take it out on purely rec. mixter
rides. Using the CdeVs. Suddenly hopping curbs is okay. I had the bug
you seem to have - it's a bit of $ and tinkering time, but has been
rewarding in many ways. The Tektro Big Mouth 73s that Riv sells work
well.
Good luck!

If you haven't already done so, I would go through the 650B site. You want
to take a look at the clearances of the frame, particularly near the
chainstays to determine tire clearances. Also, you should take a look at
the bb drop to see where you'll end up. BB-to-ground is dependant upon the
height of the tires.

http://www.freewebs.com/650b/index.htm

Also, there is a 650B-specific list hosted via bikelist.org. You may find
someone has converted your specific frame.

http://phred.org/mailman/listinfo/650b

I like my conversion project. It's kinda pound-dog ugly in a way I like. I
like the stability of the 650B's in wet weather. I've never ridden this bike
with its original tire size, so I don't have a comparison. The BB is as low
as I would ever want to go.

hope that helps a bit,

[RBW] FS:56cm Atlantis Frame/fork/wheelset

I have a 2007 56cm Atlantis frame/fork/headset for sale. Also I have A
really great wheelset/tires for sale as well. Mavic 719/XT 36h 26"
Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. Id like to sell them together. The bike
and wheelset are both used. Bike shows normal use from mounting racks,
chainsuck, a couple a paint chips. Wheels are very solid, completely
true and the hubs spin great. I love this bike, just realizing its too
small. Probably gonna get another Atlantis or maybe Hunq. Id like to
get $1500 for everything, or $1300 for the frame and $225 for the
wheels
but am open to negotiations. I can email
some pics if anyone is interested. thanks Mike

[RBW] Re: Why I like you guys

2010-10-11 Thread EricP
Nice story. Totally dislike that drop mentality. Although as I'm
usually the one dropped, it is a bias. And it's not just roadies.
Was given some serious grief Saturday on some mountain bike trails by
a club ride.

Was a great time last year riding with you folks. Definitely a
highlight of my trip out to San Diego.

Oh, Ride the Divide is well worth seeing. Not just getting the DVD,
but it is fun watching the whole shebang on the big screen. ('Fession
- pre ordered the DVD and saw it at a local screening).

It's not huge, but enough to make the bike feel bigger. Not worse/better,
just different. As I used mine for trail riding a lot, the higher TT was not

[RBW] Re: big man 650b

2010-10-11 Thread Jim M.
Not to be a wet blanket but I did a conversion of an old road racing
bike so I could use fatter tires. Many people who rode it liked it.
I'm glad I tried it, but I never really liked it. As a result I got a
Legolas which is a great road bike but will also take fatter 700 tires
for my off road and mixed terrain rides. But as they say, YMMV, and
you won't know until you try it.

This falls into the "You don't know until you try" category. After
you get the wheels, you'll either commit to having them on, or love
'em so much that you'll get a new bike like William mentioned. Or I
guess you could hate 'em and sell them, but that's less likely :-)

I love 650b and would have them exclusively if I didn't have so much $$
$ into 700c wheels.

2010-10-11 Thread William
I did a conversion on my road bike, and loved the road feel, but I did
have a drop issue that made it way easier to scrape pedals. I had
planned on running 650x38B but the Pari motos rubbed the insides of my
fork crown. So I had to go with Maxy Fasty's and those dropped me
lower than I'd wanted.

The experiment resulted in me buying a new 650B bike to fit my
wheelset. I switched my road bike back to 700C and now have four
bikes one light and one heavy for each wheelsize. I think that's
ideal. Be warned that your $500 experiment in wheels and brakes might
result in a big money bike purchase.

[RBW] Heads Up: New Atlantis frames: 47, 53, 54.5, 61

2010-10-11 Thread Steve
For those of you who might be interested in an Atlantis frame, Aaron's
Bicycle Repair in Seattle has the following frames for sale 47, 53,
54.5, 61, 68cm for $1500. Don't know if he'll take orders via the
phone and ship, but he also has a 54.5 frame for sale on eBay.
Currently at $1025 and ending on Oct. 14th.

No relationship to Aaron's Bicycle Repair, but wanted to pass this
along to the group.

I had my eyes on the 54.5, but snagged a Grand Bois Type E instead.

[RBW] Coyote Creek Classic

2010-10-11 Thread manueljohnacosta
Last Saturday the Venturing Crew participated in the 18th annual
Coyote Classic. They got to choose between an 50, 25, 12 mile bike
ride. Most of our venturers choose the 50 or 25 mile bike ride. Before
the trip we had two training ride one which end with rain. Most of the
training ride were quick rides to Alum Rock and back. That Saturday we
started early in the day with beautiful weather! The 25 milers rode on
the Coyote Creek Trail which runs parallel with 101, shaded and was
relatively flat. The 50 milers took a hard route and had only one bike
related issue early during the ride. The unexpected happened and one
of the student's rear jockey wheel fell off. Lucky they found all the
parts that they needed and finished the ride. Everyone made it back
with smiles, a better understanding of how hard they can push
themselves and how good a hamburger can taste after 50 miles of bike
riding . Looking forward tomaking this trip a staple for next year.

"Are you lost?" That's the best!!!

I guess the deal is I can't imagine going a ride where I get dropped,
or dropping someone. An A group and a B group, sure, makes sense, but
totally taking off and leaving a couple riders to fend for themselves
in a place they've never ridden with a que sheet that is not accurate?

I must say, taking them on that short (1/8 mile?) section of dirt road
was the best part. :-)

Higher BB (less drop) pushes the top tube up a cm or so. Not a big
deal, but Rivs already have a pretty high TT, so that extra cm makes
it feel kinda' tight. Especially if you put on some big-ish tires.

I think it's because "mainstreem" roadies don't know what to make of a
typical Rivendell or its rider. And remember, the guys'n'gals on the
latest'n'greatest are always a bit snobbish, regardless of the
activity (cell phones? bikes? dive equipment?). We don't fit neatly
into the pecking order.

At least out on the dirt, the MTBers ask "are you lost?" or "what're
you doing here?".

David, nice story. They look like they're having fun on the dirt.
It's always a giggle to show someone a favorite route and have them
appreciate it.

[RBW] FS: MKS Touring Lite Pedals and Power Grips.

2010-10-11 Thread Johnny Alien
Essentially a brand new set of MKS Touring Lite pedals. I threw these
on my Rambouillet and have used them for about 40 miles but have
decided I am going to give clipless a shot (don't kill me) so these
are going to go. Like I said essentially brand new. $40 shipped.

I also have some Power Grips in black. Also new. I installed them and
tried them out for about 5 miles which is what made me think I would
like to give clipless a try. $20 shipped.

If you want them both I will leave them installed as they are a bit of
a pain to get on the Lite pedal. The are installed upside down so
that the logo is not displayed.

2010-10-11 Thread Mike
Looks like some nice bikes at the show. Thanks for posting the link.
It's funny, living here in Portland you'd think you'd see more MAPs,
Ira Ryan's, Vanilla's, etc around town but it's pretty rare and often
when I do it's Mitch or Ira riding one of their bikes. Probably if I
went to cross races I'd see more. By and large the majority of bikes I
see on the road by commuters are Surlys. Racer types always seem to be
on some variation of a plastic bike by Trek, Specialized, Cervelo,
etc. I feel like I see more people on Rivendells than custom bikes by
local builders.

Ah nuts, not one of the drop bar ones!

(hijack) I'd love to find a pair of the RM013 Dirt Drop bars in
54cm. I have a 48cm which is great but just too narrow. (/hijack)

Sounds like it was interesting and fun. Portland sure does have a
concentration of talent - including some (Strawberry) that've been
around for awhile. I need to catch that show someday. Thanks for the
report.

Re: [RBW] Re: perennial pants issue

2010-10-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
FWIW, my method is simply to cut and add velcro; I leave the pockets
on -- they are very useful, especially in winter when one doesn't have
access to rear jersey pockets. I favor high rise, pleated, full cut
dress trousers for comfort when in the hoods or hooks, of tightly
woven gabardine or plain weave wool for wear; so far, except for
shininess and saddle smudging, mine show little wear after several
seasons. I cut mine long, plus 8, hem and add long velcro because I
like them snugged up tight under the knee with a lot of bag.

FWIW, mine come out of the washer, Kookabura and delicates wash, hang
dry, looking decent.

[RBW] Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show builders' ride

2010-10-11 Thread Philip Williamson
On Thursday I went on a ride around Portland with some bike builders,
and visited a few workshops. No Riv content aside from the Quickbeam I
rode, but Riv people might be interested.
There's a picture of a lug. :^)
