[RBW] Re: tweed knit sweaters are coming back!
My in-laws gifted me with a WW vest when they were still available. I wear the crap out of it. The neck is great when I don't feel like taking along a scarf, and folds down out of the way when I'm not so cold. It has holes in it and the corner of the rear pocket sags a little lopsidedly. I will probably wear it until it shreds. I got a cardigan shortly after it came out. Two days after it arrived, my sister's cat (who has a thing for wool -- anyone ever heard of this in cats?) ATE a 2-inch chunk from the cuff. I repaired it badly using wool yarn and a small-diameter crochet hook (I don't know how to knit and probably couldn't have gotten it that fine anyhow). It looks funky but the sweater is my daily too-cold-in-the-morning garment while I sip coffee and read the news. After work, I slip it on again in the evening. Sort of like Mister Rogers. I've got two and I'm all set; but if you have not owned WW tweedies before and can afford one now, buy one when they come back. You'll like it. Meanwhile, I am waiting for the return of the Wooly Warm jersey (with the button placket!) and heavier-weight trainer. A girl can dream. Re: [RBW] Re: Shoes
I have a pair of Reynolds British made shoes. Mine are an older style than heir current offerings with a sole that is too flexible for long distance riding in non-platform pedals. Very well crafted. The new ones appear to have a beefed-up sole. Bear in mind that a UK size 12 is equivalent to a US size 13. I got mine from Rivendell probably 10-12 years ago. They were $100 then. .and Grant referred to the game-changer dynamo hub. Presumably the same hub that Velo Orange has been talking up. I suppose I should elaborate, although at the risk of removing myself from the 23%. My explanation was lacking a bit. It's specifically the musa knickers I don't care for. I have 2 other pair of knickers I do like and wear. They are both home made and not of nylon material. I believe it's exactly that which I don't care for. I wear the nylon musa shorts and love them, as well as some full length nylon pants. That would be the (musa) shorts or pants for me part. For some reason the blue nylon knickers look odd to me. I've pulled then out several times, and never put them on. My other DIY pairs are cotton Kavu pants I altered, and a super nice pair of wool trousers I truncated and love in the winter. And since you mentioned, I have a couple different weights of kilt hose I wear with them. Very dapper. I should have picked up a pair of the musa pants instead. Re: [RBW] Re: Yoga; was [RBW ]
What's a little more heat in NM? Seriously, Bikram Yoga may initially seem a little harder than other types of yoga becauseit is. It's hot in there! It actually takes a few classes to get used to the heat and your instructor will probably tell you to take it slow and simply lay down and rest if the heat is getting to you. The trick for the first 2 or 3 sessions is to stay in the room for the entire class and just get used to the heat. The advantages to Bikram, in my opinion, is that the heat helps to loosen the muscles and that allows you to stretch a little further. I've also found that after a session you come out of the room with that feeling of total relaxation - similar to coming out of a sauna. I've come to this thread a little late so I apologize if this is a rehash. Anyway, try it, give it a chance and I think you'll like it. Bill - whose wife is a Bikram instructor. Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions
I've not mounted a tail light on plastic, but Rick Risemberg has for many, many miles of rough LA streets with no problems, as he latterly announced. But he uses a fender with metal/plastic sandwich construction, not mere plastic. As for wiring: I have a dyno rear light on the Motobecane and simply mounted it more or less on the sides of the tubes, running along the down tube *over* the bb and along the chainstay. For my next rear light wiring project, I may try thin wires inside some sort of tubing, say the SW's ubiquitous swamp cooler tubing -- even comes in copper beside the usual plastic! Note that SKS fenders, *I think*, are designed to conduct the electricity to the rear light sans wires. No front racks for me; I use the brake pivot bolt or (on the disk-equipped Fargo) bolt it to the crown -- the Fargo has a nice threaded attachment point at the crown's forward face. Super clean and neat like. $60 Nitto mod. 179 heat treated 42. These are a silly expensive rodie bar that have an issue, I think. I picked these up on a complete bike built with a nitto lugged stem. I wanted to use a m-bar so I pulled them off. It seems the nitto lugged stem left a perfect outline impression of the clamp on the bar. Sort of like there was a tiny lip all along the inside edge of the clamp. Not sure if this is intended or not. I dont use drop bars so I thought nothing of it. I have a Spanninga Spxb (battery light) mounted to a chromoplastic fender. No issues over maybe 1 miles. I also have a 4D Lite Plus mounted to a metal fender (maybe 3000 miles on this one). The "roll bar" does have some scratches, so it'd doing its job (no scratches on the lens). I think that I bang the light sometimes while locking up and so forth. The light works fine, except that the inline connectors I installed to make it easier to disassemble the bike are unreliable. I plan to rewire with a continuous run from headlight to taillight, which will solve that problem. The only times I've noticed myself scraping the lights have been when hanging the bikes up: I roll the bike on its rear wheel up to the hook and, if I'm not careful, scrape the light on the floor. I think that most fenders, plastic or metal, will support a generator taillight. They're very light. Use fender washers to spread the load. --glenn West Chester, PA, USA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: The Phoenix? (Hunqafied Hillborne, actually)
I'm insanely jealous of your morning ride. The weather looks beautiful. While we don't have more than a few inches of snow on the ground here in lovely Iowa, it did rain yesterday, which has made everything a catastrophically frozen mess. As a side note, I think you've persuaded me to keep my Albatross bars as I build up my next bike. I had given a lot of thought to going with a set of Noodles, but I'm thinking a nice upright position would be perfect for 2011. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Thank you! And you're right about wanting to jump on and ride. This morning I rode to work at 5:30 AM and I got to see the same moon setting that was in this photo that I took late yesterday afternoon: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46035786@N07/5365514125/in/set-72157625850005210/ -Original Message- >From: Montclair BobbyB >Sent: Jan 18, 2011 5:36 AM >To: RBW Owners Bunch >Subject: [RBW] Re: The Phoenix? Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions
Beth, Below is my experience with your questions. a. I have my light mounted to a plastic SKS fender. Has been on there since Sept 09. This bike is ridden most days and is my touring bike. No issues to date. b. I routed mine inside the fender. Taped it up with black tape, Gorilla brand. Then drilled a small hole next to the light and ran the single wire out and connected it to the light. Since the fenders were plastic the ground circuit didn't work so I ran a short length of wire from the ground lead of the light to one of the fender stay bolts. c. Mine is mounted to the fork crown. Bike has linear brakes and low rider racks. The light clears both of the handlebar bags I use. Rear light mounted to fender -- how many of you have mounted one to a (gasp!) plastic fender and how long did it last there before getting beaten up beyond repair? b. Wiring: for those kids not cool enough to have it routed internally, do you like it mounted on top or underside of tubing? c. Front light mounting: How many of you don't normally use a small front rack but specifically installed one to protect the headlight? And how many of you just went with a fork crown mount sans rack? Just curious, playing around with some set-up ideas. Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions
I have a Spanninga SPXb that has been mounted on a rear plastic fender since 2006. It is the second set of fenders. I have done over 10,000K of randonneuring events, plus probably an equal number of training miles, and it is still in good shape. Ralph On 1/17/2011 11:40 PM, b hamon wrote: Unscientific poll: a. [RBW] Re: Generator lighting questions
a. my Fargo has a PDW FenderBot on Planet Bike fenders. Been there since the fall. Lots of dirt road riding. b. it's battery, so no wires. c. the Hillborne has a light attached to a front rack. My LHT has the light on the fork crown without a front rack for protection. Both bikes have fenders. I do use the front rack on that Hillborne with a Lil' Loafer. [RBW] Re: Generator lighting questions
Hmmm... throw out my response if it doesn't qualify... I've had a Spanninga SPxba on an SKS P50 fender for over a year and over 3000 miles... and another over 6months and over 2000 miles... all weather... both still function perfectly Now those are *battery* lights (so, I'm assuming actually heavier and more vulnerable than generator version) and those are "chromoplastic" fenders (plastic aluminum sandwich, presumably stronger than pure plastic). Either difference may disqualify me from your study. :) But I'm so pleased with these auto on/off lights that I took the opportunity to mention the setup. I put in freshly charged batteries every other week and always have a light. Could probably do once a month. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean On Jan 17, 11:40 pm, b hamon wrote: > Unscientific poll: > > a.
