It's not a Bombadil, but a "very old Vintage Frame bicycle cycle bike

[RBW] Re: tweed knit sweaters are coming back!

2011-01-18 Thread Beth H
My in-laws gifted me with a WW vest when they were still available. I
wear the crap out of it. The neck is great when I don't feel like
taking along a scarf, and folds down out of the way when I'm not so
cold. It has holes in it and the corner of the rear pocket sags a
little lopsidedly. I will probably wear it until it shreds.

I got a cardigan shortly after it came out. Two days after it arrived,
my sister's cat (who has a thing for wool -- anyone ever heard of this
in cats?) ATE a 2-inch chunk from the cuff. I repaired it badly using
wool yarn and a small-diameter crochet hook (I don't know how to knit
and probably couldn't have gotten it that fine anyhow). It looks funky
but the sweater is my daily too-cold-in-the-morning garment while I
sip coffee and read the news. After work, I slip it on again in the
evening. Sort of like Mister Rogers.

I've got two and I'm all set; but if you have not owned WW tweedies
before and can afford one now, buy one when they come back. You'll
like it.

Meanwhile, I am waiting for the return of the Wooly Warm jersey (with
the button placket!) and heavier-weight trainer. A girl can dream.

Re: [RBW] Re: Shoes

2011-01-18 Thread Tim McNamara
I have a pair of Reynolds British made shoes. Mine are an older style than
heir current offerings with a sole that is too flexible for long distance
riding in non-platform pedals. Very well crafted. The new ones appear to have
a beefed-up sole. Bear in mind that a UK size 12 is equivalent to a US size 13.

I got mine from Rivendell probably 10-12 years ago. They were $100 then.
They'd be £99 now, dunno the exchange rate

$1200 for shoes eek, As someone who must wear prescription
orthotics a custom bike shoe would be nice. I found that a combination
of Specialized Body Geometry shoes (with built in varus wedge) and a
superfeet insert is good enough. Just wish they made a more "normal"
version.
BTW they make their shoes in 49's.

[RBW] Re: Rivbike Editorial of Jan. 18

Even if true, all relative.

I have a bike with a Scmidt Dyno, one with a Maxicar front hub, and
another with Campy Record. When the lights are off, there is no
noticeable drag.

Sure it may be cheaper then a Schmidt. But then as anyone who buys a
Rivendell ought to know, sometimes paying a little more means getting
a whole lot more.

It reminds me of something I often remember when teaching students: the idea

To bad none of them are ever made big enough. Don't Italians ever have size

The bottom line isall yoga is good - just do it (I heard that somewhere).
Oh, and this may not be a good advertisement for Bikram yoga, but those 6 miles
after yoga may take a little longer.

[RBW] New Berthoud "twenty six inch" X 40 mm fenders installed on '03 Riv custom commuter

2011-01-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
http://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5563676048065808626

They don't look bad, but I would have preferred a new pair of 559
Honjos which seem very elusive after Jitensha stopped carrying them.
The Berthouds are 1/4 lb heavier, complete with flap, than the Honjos,
ditto, and they are slightly narrower, which helps even up the
aesthetic balance. The tires are 22 (actual) mm 559 Turbos which I run
because I can't find anything else nearly as supple -- yes, I've tried
Paselas and don't like them.

I suppose I should elaborate, although at the risk of removing myself
from the 23%.

My explanation was lacking a bit. It's specifically the musa knickers
I don't care for. I have 2 other pair of knickers I do like and wear.
They are both home made and not of nylon material. I believe it's
exactly that which I don't care for. I wear the nylon musa shorts and
love them, as well as some full length nylon pants. That would be the
(musa) shorts or pants for me part. For some reason the blue nylon
knickers look odd to me. I've pulled then out several times, and never
put them on. My other DIY pairs are cotton Kavu pants I altered, and a
super nice pair of wool trousers I truncated and love in the winter.

And since you mentioned, I have a couple different weights of kilt
hose I wear with them. Very dapper.

I should have picked up a pair of the musa pants instead. Ah well.

[RBW] FS: Quickbeam

Hi All,

For sale is my 62cm Quickbeam. (60cm ctc). I am 6 feet tall and fits
perfectly.

some photos here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/claytonesseff/sets/72157624631299665/with/4689322413

Ideally I'd sell almost the complete bike, but if you want just the frame,
fork, rack, headset scroll down.

Frame and fork
Chris King headset
3TTT stem
Nitto Noodles in 42cm
Cane Creek levers for linear pull brakes
Paul V-brakes
Nitto front rack
Sugino Alpina cranks with surly stainless rings
SKF bottom bracket
Rear wheel (phil wood with dos eno freewheel and 16t dura ace cog on the
flipside, open pro mavic rim)
Grip King pedals
Honjo and Berthoud fenders
Nitto S-83 Post
Brooks B.17 standard in black
Sram chain
Almost new set of 35mm Paselas
Semi-worn set of Grand Bois cypress

(not selling front wheel or the light,)

$1700 plus actual shipping.

Frame has never been crashed, always stored inside.

No dents or dings. A few little scratches but overall in excellent
condition.

I am also willing to sell just the frame, front rack, headset, fork for
$1,000, although the components really work very well toghether (perfect
chainlines, etc).

Happy to show it in person too (local sale preferred).

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Yoga; was [RBW ]

2011-01-18 Thread William Pustow
What's a little more heat in NM? Seriously, Bikram Yoga may initially seem a
little harder than other types of yoga becauseit is. It's hot in there! It
actually takes a few classes to get used to the heat and your instructor will
probably tell you to take it slow and simply lay down and rest if the heat is
getting to you. The trick for the first 2 or 3 sessions is to stay in the room
for the entire class and just get used to the heat.

The advantages to Bikram, in my opinion, is that the heat helps to loosen the
muscles and that allows you to stretch a little further. I've also found that
after a session you come out of the room with that feeling of total relaxation
- similar to coming out of a sauna.

I've come to this thread a little late so I apologize if this is a rehash.
Anyway, try it, give it a chance and I think you'll like it.

Nope -- I have a battery Spanninga on Berthoud stainless fenders, and a
battery Spanninga on SKS chromoplastic. All of my generator tail lights are

I mounted on top, next to the rear brake cable -- it disappears there.

c. Front light mounting: How many of you don't normally use a small front rack

just went with a fork crown mount sans rack?

Every dyno headlight I have is on a front rack. Fork mount looks too
vulnerable to me to a spinning front wheel -- a problem the Tout Terrain frames
cleverly deal with using a stop on the steerer tube. I don't have a Tout

Went with the fork crown mount sans rack, but if that didn't work out I was
totally prepared to mount a front rack.

Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions

2011-01-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've not mounted a tail light on plastic, but Rick Risemberg has for many,
many miles of rough LA streets with no problems, as he latterly announced.
But he uses a fender with metal/plastic sandwich construction, not mere
plastic.

As for wiring: I have a dyno rear light on the Motobecane and simply
mounted it more or less on the sides of the tubes, running along the down
tube *over* the bb and along the chainstay. For my next rear light wiring
project, I may try thin wires inside some sort of tubing, say the SW's
ubiquitous swamp cooler tubing -- even comes in copper beside the usual
plastic!

Note that SKS fenders, *I think*, are designed to conduct the electricity to
the rear light sans wires.

No front racks for me; I use the brake pivot bolt or (on the disk-equipped
Fargo) bolt it to the crown -- the Fargo has a nice threaded attachment
point at the crown's forward face.

[RBW] MISC items for sale. Bar end shifters, MUSA, Nitto

2011-01-18 Thread jinxed
Morning all.

Pre-spring cleaning I suppose.
Prices include shipping in the US.
I can email pictures if/when needed.
Contact me: hbcl...@yahoo.com

Musa knickers. Blue Medium. I tried these on while visiting Rivendell,
brought them home. Wife washed them. Been sitting since. Seems I'm
just not a knicker guy. Shorts or pants for me.
$55

Shimano SL-BS64 Ultegra 8spd bar end shifters. SIS/friction. Couple
scuffs, nothing big.
$45

Nitto Noodle mod.177 44. Removed from Riv bike when new. Super clean
and neat like.
$60

Nitto mod. 179 heat treated 42. These are a silly expensive rodie bar
that have an issue, I think. I picked these up on a complete bike
built with a nitto lugged stem. I wanted to use a m-bar so I pulled
them off. It seems the nitto lugged stem left a perfect outline
impression of the clamp on the bar. Sort of like there was a tiny lip
all along the inside edge of the clamp. Not sure if this is intended
or not. I dont use drop bars so I thought nothing of it. I would ride
them and never worry knowing nitto products. But for sale? What say
you? $140 bar??
Make offer? consider shipping please.

Cheers,
Brad

I have a Spanninga Spxb (battery light) mounted to a chromoplastic
fender. No issues over maybe 1 miles.

I also have a 4D Lite Plus mounted to a metal fender (maybe 3000 miles
on this one). The "roll bar" does have some scratches, so it'd doing
its job (no scratches on the lens). I think that I bang the light
sometimes while locking up and so forth. The light works fine, except
that the inline connectors I installed to make it easier to
disassemble the bike are unreliable. I plan to rewire with a
continuous run from headlight to taillight, which will solve that
problem.

The only times I've noticed myself scraping the lights have been when
hanging the bikes up: I roll the bike on its rear wheel up to the hook
and, if I'm not careful, scrape the light on the floor.

I think that most fenders, plastic or metal, will support a generator
taillight. They're very light. Use fender washers to spread the
load.

[RBW] Re: The Phoenix? (Hunqafied Hillborne, actually)

2011-01-18 Thread Mike Irwin
I'm insanely jealous of your morning ride. The weather looks
beautiful. While we don't have more than a few inches of snow on the
ground here in lovely Iowa, it did rain yesterday, which has made
everything a catastrophically frozen mess.

As a side note, I think you've persuaded me to keep my Albatross bars
as I build up my next bike. I had given a lot of thought to going with
a set of Noodles, but I'm thinking a nice upright position would be
perfect for 2011.

Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions

2011-01-18 Thread Steve Hemmelgarn
Beth,

Below is my experience with your questions.

a. I have my light mounted to a plastic SKS fender. Has been on there since
Sept
09. This bike is ridden most days and is my touring bike. No issues to date.

b. I routed mine inside the fender. Taped it up with black tape, Gorilla brand.
Then drilled a small hole next to the light and ran the single wire out and
connected it to the light. Since the fenders were plastic the ground circuit
didn't work so I ran a short length of wire from the ground lead of the light
to
one of the fender stay bolts.

c. Mine is mounted to the fork crown. Bike has linear brakes and low rider
racks. The light clears both of the handlebar bags I use.

Unscientific poll:

a. Rear light mounted to fender -- how many of you have mounted one to a
(gasp!)
plastic fender and how long did it last there before getting beaten up beyond
repair?

b. Wiring: for those kids not cool enough to have it routed internally, do you
like it mounted on top or underside of tubing?

c. Front light mounting: How many of you don't normally use a small front rack
but specifically installed one to protect the headlight? And how many of you
just went with a fork crown mount sans rack?

Just curious, playing around with some set-up ideas.

Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions

2011-01-18 Thread Ralph Rognstad Jr.
I have a Spanninga SPXb that has been mounted on a rear plastic fender
since 2006. It is the second set of fenders. I have done over 10,000K of
randonneuring events, plus probably an equal number of training miles,
and it is still in good shape.

Unscientific poll:

a. Rear light mounted to fender -- how many of you have mounted one to
a (gasp!) plastic fender and how long did it last there before getting
beaten up beyond repair?

b. Wiring: for those kids not cool enough to have it routed
internally, do you like it mounted on top or underside of tubing?

c. Front light mounting: How many of you don't normally use a small
front rack but specifically installed one to protect the headlight?
And how many of you just went with a fork crown mount sans rack?

Just curious, playing around with some set-up ideas.

[RBW] Re: Generator lighting questions

2011-01-18 Thread EricP
a. my Fargo has a PDW FenderBot on Planet Bike fenders. Been there
since the fall. Lots of dirt road riding.
b. it's battery, so no wires.
c. the Hillborne has a light attached to a front rack. My LHT has the
light on the fork crown without a front rack for protection. Both
bikes have fenders. I do use the front rack on that Hillborne with a
Lil' Loafer.

[RBW] Re: Generator lighting questions

2011-01-18 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hmmm... throw out my response if it doesn't qualify...
I've had a Spanninga SPxba on an SKS P50 fender for over a year and
over 3000 miles... and another over 6months and over 2000 miles... all
weather... both still function perfectly

Now those are *battery* lights (so, I'm assuming actually heavier and
more vulnerable than generator version) and those are "chromoplastic"
fenders (plastic aluminum sandwich, presumably stronger than pure
plastic). Either difference may disqualify me from your study. :) But
I'm so pleased with these auto on/off lights that I took the
opportunity to mention the setup. I put in freshly charged batteries
every other week and always have a light. Could probably do once a
month.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean
