+1 for what stevep33 says.
For me, the way a bike rides is more than the sum of the parts.
I got a custom Riv as I knew that Rivendells are great bikes.
My Riv rides better than I could have imagined, plus it's gorgeous.
As Grant said during one of our conversations, ' don't worry your bike
will be great'.

He wasn't kidding.
Rivendell make great riding bikes.
I don't presume to have a clue about how they do it - it's their job
and they are very good at it.

A Rivendell could be made of bubble gum for all I care. It looks and

With custom stuff..it's appropriate just to say to a reputable builder
that I want the bike to feel like XYZ and have some specific features
- have them pick the tubes, etc. Chances are, a good builder knows
how to create bike better than I do. Wouldn't it be really annoying
if some nerdy customer came along reciting tubing thicknesses and
brands without ever having picked up a torch? When you buy a bike,
you buy the builder's high standards and expertise (e.g. Sachs), not
the right to dictate process.

Hi All,

There's a new blog post on the Rivendell site, about the tubing used
on the AHH frames. It is advertised as dry reading- but
personally

I found it very interesting, maybe b/c like many here, I am a total
bike nut. I think it's great that Grant decided to post it, even
though he is wont to omit such details, being that he feels the
brand

of tubing used to build a frame is mostly unimportant.

But I just wanted to play devil's advocate here, WRT the main
point of

the post:

I think Grant's analogy to the guy (who's getting a new wing added
to
his house) asking about the kind of wood a building contractor
uses is
flawed, because if a guy is paying really good money to a really
well-
respected home-building contractor, he's probably absolutely
concerned

about the kind of wood being used. I wouldn't know because I've
never had a wing added to a house, but if I were going to, and I
were
going to hire the best contractor I could, I'd doubtless want to
know

what kind of lumber or other materials the builder planned to use,
because I know that not all lumber is equal.Tools, maybe
not... I
probably woudn't care about the tools the builder uses- but that
is

definitely not the same as materials. I don't have to live with the
tools the contractor uses, only he does. I would just have to live
with the finished product.

That being said I am aware that, among quality bicycle tube
manufacturers, there is negligible difference in quality, and
honestly, I don't really care too much about whether it's Tange,
True

Temper or Reynolds. However, if they were all the same, why would
the respective manufacturers bother to brand their tubes at
all?Of

course they want to be proud of the quality of their tubes vs. the
other guy's, and they want their tubes to be in demand. So, the
question is, who do the tubing companies need to advertise to- the
builder, or the rider?I'm going to go out on a limb here, and
say

that the rider of the bicycle, who may spend decades or a lifetime
with a bicycle, is probably in a better position to worry about the
quality of the tubes than the builder. The builder may braze the
tubes together and certainly would be concerned about how easy the
tubes are to work with, but ultimately the builder is done with the
tubes as soon as the bike is out the door. The rider, on the
other

hand, gets to spend potentially quite a long time with a bike,
recocheting over frost-heaves, being ambushed by stealth potholes
on a

rainy night, locking it to crowded bike racks, etc.

If Grant's philosophy is taken to the extreme, then maybe most
bicycle

makers should leave off decals from their bikes too? I mean, among
established, well-respected sellers of bicycle frames, there's
negligible difference in bicycle quality right? In fact, you
could

say the same about frame geometry too- it's not important, because
within a certain range of numbers, most well made bicycles are going
to ride well enough. OK I'm definitlely going way overboard here,
but only to try to make a point.

Anyway, stepping away from the topic of tubing brands, and moving to
tubing specs:

If I'm buying a bike frame, new or used, I do feel that knowing the
wall thicknesses used in the tubes is important. Not because of
'ride quality' per se, but because I have dented a fair number of
bicycle frames in my day, and even inadvertenly rearranged the
geometry on some, in what I would call reasonab

Re: [RBW] Re: Ride on the Bosque Trail in Albuquerque - a set on Flickr

2011-02-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
No, at least not for a few generations, since they've so dammed and
diverted and controlled the Rio Grande. My next door neighbor has an
inflatable kayak that he'll drive up to a trailhead a few miles north,
float down, then get on his bike to pick up his car and in low spells,
told me that after the spring runoff and before the "monsoon" the
river is barely 3 feet deep in the main channel. We are in much more
danger from forest fire than flooding.

In the past, though, I think it did flood and there are leftover,
huge, steel-girder "X's" scattered throughout the bosque to hold back
floating debris -- the city or Corps of Engineers or whoever has
started to remove these.

It is a good gofast place, if you are in shape and you choose a
weekday afternoon when it is lightly traveled. The route we took
(apart from the detours due to a 5 mile stretch closed for repaving)
is 21 miles out and back and when I am in shape (hah! it has been some
time!) I can average 18, winds and all, on the gofast 75". Head down
is right, as I use the hooks a lot in the wind.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ride on the Bosque Trail in Albuquerque - a set on Flickr

2011-02-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
First: Eric, nice photos. I wasn't paying attention when you mentioned
the poster and thought you said "Wolf" festival -- we've had that sort
of thing here, with the re-introduction of a certain wolf species into
area wildlands within the last 10 years. I'd have paid more attention
if I had understood you. (And my eyesight is not all that it could be,
frankly.)

Others: Eric got me out of my winter hibernation -- very little riding
during December and January, and I was pleased that I did not do worse
over the 25 miles. I was on the 1973 Motobecane and wore my original
style WoolyWarm, rear pocketed jersey for the first time and at about
freezing, it did find over a single, base wool layer. Do my knickers
make me look fat?

The bosque is wonderful: no great shakes compared to the best natural
beauty of No and So Cal, but in contrast to the surrounding high
desert it is a wonderful strip of green, about 1/2 mile on each side
of the ~ 1/2 mile wide Rio Grande. Of course, it is much greener and
less dusty looking in summer.

Jim: I think we' corresponded via tangent off the Boblist, no? Please
do knock when you next visit. The bosque beckons.

And Garcia's Kitchen, near 4th and Montano, *does* serve beer!

Re: [RBW] Re: Blog post about tubing for AHH

2011-02-11 Thread Shaun Meehan
I enjoyed the post. I've never really known what kind of tubing my
Rivendells were/are made of (Atlantis and Quickbeam). I've had people ask me
what kind of tubing is used on my Atlantis and I've had to answer "I don't
know". That's the same answer I give when someone asks me how much my bike
weighs. In both cases, I've never really cared enough to try to make a
determination.

[RBW] Re: In case you cannot find a Power Grip the right color ...

2011-02-11 Thread JoelMatthews
Probably the first time my tech advice worked!

I was using the Bruce Gordon half clips with my Whites. As long as
you are riding with tough sneakers or such, the half clips pair well
with the Whites.

Unfortunately, both the steel and Ti versions leave marks on my work
shoes. My ride to work is short enough that on nice days I would
rather not have to wear bike shoes and have to change at the office.
Possibly if Bruce made a version with flat rather than round tubing
this would not be a problem.

Thanks, Joel. Firefox & Chrome = no dice, Safari = A-OK.

I will let the group know how these straps work once I get 'em. I'm
glad these were introduced, as I really wanted to get the W.I pedals,

these can adjust on the fly and are high quality.

2011-02-11 Thread JoelMatthews
Mike:

The problem with the site may have to do with your browser. I had
trouble getting it to work on Explorer, but worked fine on Safari.

I have the new Power Grip Riv is selling. I think the materila is
leatherette, but am not sure. Power Grips seem sturdy, but are not
easily adjusted. From the Moletta demo, it appears these new ones may
be easier to adjust. If so, this is exactly what I want, as I wear
different shoes depending on when and where I am riding.

Just put in for a set of White Industries pedals and I'm trying to get
a pair of these Molletta straps to go with them, but the slick hipster
webdesign is unspeakably frustrating. I can't find any type of
checkout button on the site, and so their inventory shall remain
static, along with their $8 bike moustaches.

I'm also considering power grips, but these seem like a sturdier (&
prettier) option. Can anybody tell me what the Powergrips are made of?
Can you vouch for their durability? I guess the obvious answer is Riv

[RBW] Ride on the Bosque Trail in Albuquerque - a set on Flickr

2011-02-11 Thread Eric Norris
I was in Albuquerque on business yesterday and met up with fellow Riv list
member Patrick Moore, who was kind enough to lend me a bike (a fixed-gear
Rivendell!) and give me a tour of the Bosque Trail near his home. It was cold
(around freezing), but we swaddled ourselves in wool and headed out for a nice
ride, followed by a great lunch of New Mexican food at a local eatery.

[RBW] Re: 90s Rivs for Sale in Alexandria, Va.

2011-02-11 Thread Marty
Talked to Christian about the dark blue Riv - a 26" wheeled beauty,
which would be just right for my wife. Sounds like he has many other
fine steel rides that would no doubt drain my reserves. I plan to stop
in when I'm in the neighborhood. Thanks for the heads up Ed!

Ami,
If you come through Nashville, I hope you will stop and say hey. It
is eight degrees here this morning, but should be in the thirties
later. My shop is in Hillsboro Village, and there are several cool
spots for dining near by...bosco's brewery, too. You will have the
AHH with you??

[RBW] Re: Bags

2011-02-11 Thread Thaddeus
Hi all,

I just recently cranked out a prototype handlebar bag for my GF's Sam
Hillborne. A little V-day present (Shhh!) The blog is nascent to say
the least, but I put some pictures up of the process. The blog will
actually get used later this year when we ride cross country, so
hopefully I can get the bags coming out perfect before then.

[RBW] Marin Ride

2011-02-11 Thread Adam
Riding out this weekend with a group of roughly 25 from Embarcadero
Bart out to Samuel P Taylor. We'll be camping out one night taking
the inland route out and the coastal route back. Some of us, the riv
riders in particular, are thinking of adding the Bolinas Ridge Trail
into our Sunday Ride. Hope to see some Rivendells and their riders
out on the road, or perhaps at the hiker biker site before the rains
come in next week. Just wanted to share these exciting plans.

Hope it's a good weekend of riding for the bay area folks and everyone
else as well.

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: Road Trip to Tennessee and Maybe Georgia!

2011-02-11 Thread Leslie
What route are you driving between Detroit and Altanta? If you veer
towards the west through Nashville to get there, maybe Kim (m6hm) can
give far better advice than me. The more direct route, through
Knoxville, I might suggest Calhouns (I always go to the one on the
River) for good food http://www.coppercellar.com/Restaurant-Calhouns.html.
However, if you veer a bit more east near the Tri-Cities, and like
Rails-to-Trails type of riding, then I would suggest heading for
Abingdon VA and taking a look at the Creeper Trail :
http://www.vacreepertrail.com/
http://www.vacreepertrail.us/ http://www.adventuredamascus.com/Trail.htm

FWIW...

2011-02-11 Thread steven
Riding should be nice in Atlanta this weekend.

Look up a place called Serenbe. It's a community a half hour outside
Atlanta with fantastic roads around it and some good gravel.

The PATH system from downtown to Stone Mtn is great. There is also a
beautiful section through the Arabia Mtn Heritage area.

What kind of riding and mileage are you looking for? As a native I
can steer you in the right direction.
