[RBW] Re: So...sick...of...flats....UGH!
The tires say HS 308 on them 700x45c 47-622 28x1.75 The little nubblies are still on the sidewalls by the generator groove but not on the tread that hits the road but there is a slight remnant of the tire mold line on the center of the tread more on what was the front tire less on the back. Reflective strip & Big 'Schwalbe Marathon' in white on the sidewall. Actually I have a third tire with the same markings except it has a little red 'Kevlar MB Belted' area on one sidewall and 'Schwalbe Marathon' in smaller letters. This tire has only been mounted, never ridden and is virtually new. I'd throw it in but it inflates to around 38mm instead of 41mm so not sure what the deal isI'd like to find a match for it. These are a good set of tires I just need to be able to afford some 700x35 Green Guards for my SO so I can ride it to work over glass littered streets. I had a set of the Schwalbe 700x47's (41mm actual) on my A719 rims.I rode them a short while then purchased some Supremes but I live in the rainy Northwest (Washington State). I'd sell them but I'm not sure how to ship them. They are gnarly and heavy but they ride fine. I had total confidence riding over rocky gravel roads with them. [RBW] Re: Lights, lights, lights
Is that just a regular road bike with a rack mounted to it with P-clamps? I really like that. Any wobbling? or criticism? I really want to try that with my steel road bike, putting a small/medium rando bar bag in the front. Maybe mounting a light as well. I've made a front light mount like that as well, just not as carved. Really pretty, I like the lines. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Interesting refutation of Gary Taubes' obesity ideas
Hi Patrick.yea I work with about thirty Vietnamese/Chinese and I see what they eat everyday. Mostly meat or seafood/shellfish and or eggs plus some kind of weird vegetabley soup like stuff they dribble over a tiny ice cream scoop size ball of rice. Most rarely (if ever) eat sugar in the form of cookies, candy, soda or cake etc. They seem to shun most American foods including fast food.at least the ones who arrived here more recently. They often make a big deal ( some religious thing) of cooking a whole pig underground and rarely throw any of it away. At larger gatherings they eat more fresh vegetables and fruits and the meals are more elaborate with roast duck or shark fin soup being popular. Sometimes they have the Pho soup with the rice noodles but most focus on the meat and often leave the broth. They drink quite a bit of green tea but smoke like freight trains. During celebrations they drink large amounts of beer and shots of cognac and never seem to get fat.when I joined them at the casino weekly over several months, I gained 20 pounds shooting up to 282 at my fattest. There is something to be said for genetics. Re: [RBW] Pictures of Sammy
The sizing and the amount of seatpost showing are line with the Rivendell recommendations, because this is an expanded geometry with the 6 degree upsloping top tube. If the upslope were more like 1.5 or 2 degrees (Hilsen or Roadeo), that much post showing would be out of line with Rivendell recommendations. My own Sam shows an amount of post similar to the bike in the photo, and it's a 60 cm. My Atlantis shows much less, and it is a 64 cm. The two bikes fit almost identically. They are my ideal sizes for each frame. -Jim W. -Original Message- From: Rex Kerr Sent: Sep 1, 2011 3:25 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [RBW] Pictures of Sammy How's that frame size? Then there is flattish dirt riding on top, with no water except what you can beg from car drivers. One can continue east to Highway 65 and do a loop back into the Grand Valley at ~120miles. [RBW] Ride report: Land's End road in western Colorado
Wednesday was a day off, and I finally made time this summer for my favorite local climb. It is Land's End Road to the southeast of Grand Junction. There are several lovely mixed surface rides in the area, this one being the most dramatic. I bought the Legolas cross bike for these rides. It is some 18 miles one way with about 4000 ft of climbing to just below 10,000 ft. In spite of the big elevation gain, the ride is fairly gentle. The Legolas has 36/50 (TA) chainrings and the 12-36 cassette that Rivendell sells http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/cassettes/13-086 For the most part I used a 36X28or32 gear for the long dirt portion. It was a lovely day. I snapped just a few photos with my phone. [RBW] Re: So...sick...of...flats....UGH!
I'm growing ever more appreciative of the (apparently swept, manicured, delicately textured, hallowed) paths I ride. Since I started riding 3 years ago, I've had 4 flats, I think. One was a spoke poking through the rim tape on the most shoddily assembled wheel I've ever seen with an obviously cut-rate rim. Two were due to mounting errors (mea culpa) as I learned how to (not) use tire levers. The final one was a Pasela's tumorous-subsequently-exploding gumwall, about 9 months ago. That was my last Pasela; I'd already had three that developed bulgy-bubble gumwalls in a few hundred miles that I caught before they exploded. Shame, because those Paselas were the only tire I've ever used that rode noticeably better than any other tire I've used. I think it was the relative roundness? Now I use $15 Kendas which ride just like the other non-Paselas I've ever used and which I can mount/unmount without tools. Good-to-very-good. Not great. They last maybe only 2,000 miles before the gumwalls start fraying. But hey they cost only $15 delivered! My next bike will be shod with Vittoria Randonneur Hypers, about which I've heard good and bad. We'll see. But I haven't had a traditional, standard, run-of-the-mill, apparently everyday, I-ran-over-something-which-poked-a-hole-in-my-tube flat. That's over 10,000 miles. And, yes... The first time I did this, I ran the wire (Schmidt coax from Peter White) down the downtube, around the bottom bracket, and inside the fender to the taillight. In theory, a quick-disconnect at the bottom bracket allowed for disassembling the bike without disturbing the wiring; in practice, the disconnect is a source of electrical failures. On the bike I'm assembling now, the wire runs inside the downtube, inside the bottom bracket shell, inside the left chainstay, and then out and up the fender stay to the taillight. This way, the bike can be disassembled without messing with disconnects: the wire stays with the frame. The wire could go outside the tubes, of course; my frame happens to be drilled for the internal routing. --glenn West Chester, PA, USA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Questions: Wiring a tail light and more.
Brian, Have wired taillights 2 ways and both have worked fine. I have wired a dynamo taillight by running the single wire from the dynamo along the down tube, secured by zip ties. Went along top of the bottom bracket and drilled a small hole into SKS fenders. Then taped the wire inside the fender. Drilled another small hole just below the mounted taillight and pulled wire through for connection to the light. I did not get a good ground with the SKS fenders so ran a short ground wire from the taillight to a fender stay bolt. This worked without trouble for 2 years. On my new Hunqapillar I decided to run the single wire from the dyanamo across the top tube, down one of the seat stays and along a fender stay. The wire was secured by several zip ties along the way. This bike has VO aluminum fenders and I did not need to make a separate ground connection. Only had this a few weeks so will see how I like the external routing. While the dynamo lighting set-up is expensive I have really enjoyed having good lights available without having to fuss with batteries. [RBW] Re: Hennessy Hammocks for bike camping
Timely discussion as I just purchased an Expedition Asym. I have only set it up in my back yard but I think I will really like it. It HAS to be better than a tent for me. Not once have I slept well in a tent without some sort of sleep aid. I highly recommend watching all the setup videos, etc as it's not idiot proof. Also, I recommend the 'snake skins' accessory. There is at least one authorized dealer on eBay that offers free snake skins and shipping.
