Joe, Congratulations on your new Rivendell and thanks for the great and
insightful write-up. If the color is like the other bike posted, well, I
want one. Anyway, I'm pretty much a loner-type rider myself. If my
experience is any indication, you probably won't attract too much attention
on your Riv. In my area, there are lots of racing-oriented roadies, riding
CF Treks, etc. I think my Bleriot is pretty different-looking, but I
haven't had any comments on it. Have certainly seen some folks looking
though. I'm looking forward to pix of your new bike. Happy riding, Steve

Re: [RBW] Re: Jack Browns - Tires For The Future?

2011-09-30 Thread jimD

Here in Northern Calif. the many secondary/tertiary roads that make for great
bicycle routes are poorly maintained. Until the Tour of Calif. started using
Tunitas Creek Road for one of the stages, the surface reminded me of a bombing
range. Now many of the craters have been filled. I read the Sonoma County is
considering letting some roads 'revert' to gravel.

Funds to maintain roads here are diminishing and that seems unlikely to improve
any time soon.

I'm stocking up on fat/er tires. They work great for the 'roads of the future'.

[RBW] Re: I'm a Rivendell owner! (a saga, long)

2011-09-30 Thread Minh
Joe,

Don't worry about the attention, while everyone here loves the look of
Rivendells, the world outside has long since moved on. I ride mine
every weekend on the busy trails here in DC and only once every few
weeks will i get any comments. And there is plenty to comment about
on my bikes, from the wierd leather saddles (brooks, sella anatomica
or berthoud) to the bags (ns tweed, berthoud or carradice) and i only
get a nice bike comment from the folks in the know, i.e. they comment
on the bike by name.

Of course this assumes that your hypothesis is correct, that people
are just complimenting on the bike. It could just be you that they
are complimenting :)

The beauty of the JB's is that if you spot some dirt road going somewhere
new, you can take a chance and see where it goes. To me, that's the best
thing about riding fat road tires. Last night I was riding in a new area
here in northern LA and ended up taking three different dirt roads, that all
ended too quickly, and even some singletrack but it was still worth it just
to be out on the bike exploring

[RBW] Nigel Smyth Large Saddle Bag FS

2011-09-30 Thread Adam
Greetings Bunch,

I am raising funds for a new bike and have a Nigel Smyth large saddle
bag for sale. It is the tan canvas with leather trim type, purchased
about 2 years ago. It is huge, comparable to the saddlesack large in
capacity. It is in good condition. It is missing one grommet buckle
(replaceable) on one of the side pockets but is in otherwise great
condition.

I took a couple of pictures this morning but am having difficulty
posting them. If you are very interested send me an email and I'll
forward them along.

I live in Berkeley and would prefer a local buyer but am willing to
ship for whatever additional cost it may be,

Price- $125 OBO

I also have a silver hupe that can be used as support for an
additional $5.

Cheers,
Adam

[RBW] "Wow you go really fast on that thing"

2011-09-30 Thread Allan in Portland
Literally heard that last night in regards to my still-new-to-me AHH. Look,
I know the tires are a little shabby, and the saddle doesn't fit the
aesthetic (but it does fit me), but really, "that thing?"

:-) OK, as it was coming from a young 20-something on a crabon looking
Scattante bike with skinny tires and not much else, I figured it was a
compliment.

I should start a blog of unprompted comments Rivendells bring. So far, in
less than 2 months I've had the usual "how old is it" on two different
occasions. Some guy who looks like he doesn't ride bikes asked if I could go
over 40 mph on it (was happy to show him the computer's max speed was
currently recorded as 39.55). And not quite a comment, but the train rider
in the seat next to me very conspicuously doing a web search on "A. Homer
Hilsen" Not that I can blame any of them, (OK, I do hold it against the "how
old is?" guys), it _is_ a great looking bike. In fact, as I often thing to
myself, much better looking than it should considering it's built up almost
entirely from second-hand accumulation.

And finally, something (IMO) so cliched (no offense intended) I thought I'd
_never_ do, before, well..., getting my own put together, the flickr photo
set .

Best regards & hats off to Grant P,

I just did a solo 200k yesterday in Marin (to keep my R12 going), and
treated myself to the gravel path through Samual P Taylor Park instead of
the uber narrow Sir Francis Drake Blvd through that section. I was running

2011-09-30 Thread Ryan J
I just recently picked up an older italian bike that has 25s on it after
riding the last two years on 32s and 38s, it takes some getting used to but
the bike isn't totally uncomfortable. I prefer the wider tires though,
which is the bikes I will be getting in the future. The 25s are just
harsher and I had to physically avoid road conditions that I wouldn't when
riding the Sam Hillborne. The road conditions where I ride are fine for the
most part, low traffic and relatively smooth, but every so often I take a
road that is better served with fatter tires, especially some of the roads
through the forest and game preserves. I know that the future of my biking
is better served with fatter tires...at least 32s.

Hmm, that would be consistent with my interpretation of the first question. ;-)

2011-09-30 Thread Allan in Portland
Yeah, after he said it, it took me awhile to register what about it would
make him think it might not be fast. He didn't get a good look at it, we
were moving at 25-35 going down a hill then a long run out. He passed me in
the run out, got caught by a light, I passed him later in on a smaller hill,
he passed me on the run out of it, which was when he made his comment. It
occurred to me the fenders had to be what he was keying off of.

So no, not an English 3 speed, it's an American 18. :-)

The Cheech and Chong connection was precisely my intention. There's a

"Randonneurs have more fun because they roll fatties"

"I ride a Rivendell because I like to roll fatties"

"Roll a fatty (or two) on a Rivendell"

[RBW] Re: "Wow you go really fast on that thing"

2011-09-30 Thread Rick
Around town, I frequently get the "how old is that bike?" thing.
Usually at stop lights.

If I'm feeling chatty, I use it as an opening to unapologetically
discuss the merits of a Riv-based approach to a cycling-centric
lifestyle.

About three out of ten seem to appreciate it, six do a spandex-clad "o-
kay" as they retreat on their carbon stallions, and the tenth gets
hostile.

When not feeling chatty, I say: "'09."

Mostly I get very nice comments about my Quickbeam. There was one fellow I

I wonder if it's the same guy who posted this (censored) comment in response
to my flickr photo:

Hey I saw a bike like that on craigslist. It was a little lacking in [*slur*]
and was missing a zero on the end of the price, but overall maybe a nice
adjunct if you're looking to buy another worthless piece of [*profane*]?
You'll still get to go through that same process of explaining that you
really wanted to get a CrMo frame (not because you're a legit, fit rider
who's riding a heavy frame for monetary or safety reasons, mind you...just
because $2000 seemed reasonable for not having to buy an "authentic" looking
bike second hand).

I just got linked to this page from the Rivendell site because I was
horrified that someone (locally! In the 925!) makes money from selling bikes
that would raise eyebrows if someone was trying to sell it second-hand for
over $300. I'm never given to vandalism, but I would definitely wait by your
bike if I ever saw it until I could castigate you for willfully wasting
money on nothing. It's not a classic. It's not a whit more functional or
safe than the sub-$300 ex-touring steel bikes on Craigslist. It's not even
the good kind of ostentatious, like a Ferrari that can get you laid. It's
just aggressively meaningless. If I found that you weren't rich enough to go
to the atm, withdraw 2K, and light it on fire, I think I would call you
pretentious. If you were, but weren't so darkly nihilistic so as to taunt
the good folk of your community collecting to save the stick figures in
Africa by repeatedly incinerating potential aid dollars in front of them,
I'd call you an idiot.

What if that's just you though? Respekt, you're a cold mofo and we should go
ride and do some recreational arson at this orphanage I know.

Wow... somebody's got issues. I wonder if his car costs more than a few
thousand... you know, you can buy an old 50 MPG Geo for something like
$1000... I responded with something like "Thanks for the compliments, glad
you liked my bike." :-)

[RBW] Riding from Riv HQ to Berkeley

2011-09-30 Thread Rex Kerr
Planning to stop by RivHQ tomorrow... will be dropped off by car, but was
planning to ride to Berkeley afterwards.

Looking at Google maps, I get two possible routes. The problem is, both say
that I should ride on HWY 24, and the street view there doesn't look very
pleasant (it's freeway!). Is there a better route that avoids the highway
and isn't much longer than 20 miles [time constraints]?

I remember that Grant said that he was going to publish a route, but I don't
remember ever seeing that.

Thanks!

The way I go is alongside 24 until you hit the bike path that is right
ALONGSIDE 24 but it is a bike path. That gets you up to Orinda, where I
usually cut over (south, right) on Camino Pablo to Wildcat, over Inspiration
Point and drop into North Berkeley on Spruce.

On Google Maps if you push the bike button, it will keep you off the
freeway.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riding from Riv HQ to Berkeley

2011-09-30 Thread Aaron Thomas
I can't provide you a blow-by-blow at the moment, but I'd go from WC through
Lafayette, Moraga, Canyon, up Pinehurst to Skyline, and from Skyline towards
Berkeley. It's more scenic than going along the 24. Lots of trees.

Nope, reading the strip over breakfast very morning has been one of the
delights of the past year or two. First three things I checked every morning
was Yehuda, Calvin and Hobbes and Cul de Sac.

I'm sad to see it go, have some vague hope it might be back some time, and have
*no idea* of the amount of time something like that must eat up and take away
from family, friends, etc. It has to be considerable even when not running
into the inevitable writer's block and such.

My thanks to Rick for his hard work and labor of love! I hope he enjoyed it as
much as I and many others did. The strip deserves a little mention in the
"Lauterbrunnen Leaflet" some time.

2011-09-30 Thread Rex Kerr
Thanks for the routes!

One question about the first one (Orinda to Wildcat Canyon)

Is Meadows Canyon Trail paved? If not, and if I decide to take the paved
route to get back quicker (depends how much time I spend at RBW!) how bad is
the ride down Wildcat Canyon Road? Are the drivers crazy [crazier than
normal] on the blind curves in that area?

I'll answer the second part. This is a very heavily biked area, and most
drivers are aware of it. You won't find a lot of bike hatin' cowboys near
