[RBW] Re: regarding the defunct rapid rise derailers and those anti-handlebar-flop doohickeys.

2012-02-04 Thread GeorgeS
I'm really glad to see this discussion about the Shimano RD's. Some
years ago I bought a used Atlantis from Tom Hill at Hyawatha. When I
started riding the bike I was disconcerted by the fact that the
deraileurs worked the opposite from what I was used to. Pushing the
levers away resulted in thing springing to a bigger gear. I thought
of changing the mechanism to solve the problem but I'm lazy, the
thing worked fine, so I just adapted. I probably ride the Atlantis
more, day in day out, than any of my other bikes. So, what does one
call the reverse action deraileur? Do I understand from the thread
that Shimano has dropped this device from the line-up or is it the
opposite? This is probably the kind of thing that I should know w/o
asking but most of my bikes are vintage things with relatively crude
shifting mechanisms. In my defense, however, I do know a lot about
Cambio Corsa shifters.

A year or more ago, my rambunctious golden retrievers knocked over the
Atlantis, which was politely drying in the afternoon sun after a nice
bath.  The derailer hanger bent, and it totaled my original derailer,
which was the now-discontinued rapid rise version.  I admonished the
dogs, and substituted with shimano's current high normal equivalent,
consoling myself with the thought that I'd adjust to pulling my silver
shifters up to go to a lower gear, just as I had quickly gotten used
to pushing down for same when that reverse action came around.

I never did.  Maybe the little fellow needed some fine tuning, but my
real objection was, I suspect, somewhat more conceptual:  lifting that
shifter up to ascend to a higher gear had come to make more sense
somehow.  (That, and I still have one of the rapid rise fellows on the
bleriot, so I wasn't able to completely block out the past
 experience.)

So, through the magik of the intertubes, I procured and mounted the
rapid rise model back on the Atlantis. The difference is remarkable
for me, and I am most happy with my reversion to the reverse-action. I
suppose I should get some more before the ether swallows all
 examples.

That having been said, I have a question on another, tangentially-
related subject:  when at rest, Atlantis sits on a two-legged
kickstand, and with a decent load pops a static wheelie.  On a sloping
surface, those handlebars swing round with a vengeance, and if the
rear load's uneven, the resulting weight shift threatens to topple
 all.

So -- what do you call/where can I get one of those rotation-limiting
devices that prevent the full swing-around on the bars?  I've seen
them in photos posted by a couple of you touring types, I believe.
And maybe I should lop several centimeters off the kickstand legs to
 decrease the wheelie effect?

 Rick.

+1 Steve. I think that BQ's article on optimum wheel and tire sizes may have
concluded that the Cypres (and the folding 35mm Kojak too, BTW) was about the
right weight for acceptable handling on 700c wheels, but everything Jan has
written on the subject would seem to indicate the wider, lower pressure tire is
better for almost every situation.

Re: [RBW] Big bikes and limits

2012-02-04 Thread jimD
+1 on the beautiful bike deal.

Here's my story about 'lively'.

The design of my Riv custom is based on a Riv Romulus.
I don't know the detail tube wall, geometry differences in the two designs.
I just asked Grant for a bike like my the Romulus and we talked about where
and how I ride.
I was expecting a fancier version of the Romulus.
What the custom ended up being was more than that

The custom is 'livelier' than the Romulus was.

Further proof for me that Grant is one of 'the pros from Dover' when it comes
to designing
great riding bikes.

I was real fond of the Romulus, the custom is perfection for me.

-JimD
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Esteban, you forgot to mention how damn good looking the bike was!

I'm sure there are almost as many opinions about the lively issue as there
are tire sizes. Two variables trump everything else. The right set of tires
wheels can make a bike feel much more lively and give a rider that little
bit extra of acceleration to stay with a faster group. But I'm also
convinced that Jan Heine is right about flexibility and planing. If a bike
is over built and too rigid it can feel sluggish on jumps but still cruise
very nicely. I certainly haven't ridden every bike honored on this list but
am convinced that as you move toward a strong touring or trail efficient
build you necessarily give up some of the liveliness that is the hallmark of
a great road bike. My 1988 Marinoni stage racing frame (columbus standard
gauge tubing with world championship heritage) has it and so does my
Rambouillet. My Ebisu All Purpose a notch less but the SOMA Dble Cross,
built stiffer with OS tubing is great for touring and commuting, does not
hammer anywhere near as well as the Ram.

Of course my motor now has a lot of years and miles on it so words like
quick, jump, and hammer get more problematic with every passing season.

It turned out to be (naturally) one of those a miss is as good as a
mile things. One tiny mump-with-groove thing missing where it needs
to be. So...full of naive boyish hope and expectation, I asked
MicroShift--in person, there at MSHQ, sitting down at a table, whether
they could make 'em that way for us, and we'd buy 400. He said
something like, Nice try, but that would take ten thousand dollars in
tooling, lots of development time, and we could make your year's
supply in one productive afternoon.

I used to hear that a lot in the '90s, but our seeming legitimacy and
webby presence and rep have since gotten us stuff we never could have
gotten back then (tires, rims, pedals..). Still to small for special
derailers, though.

Too bad Shimano quit 'em. I'm half-and-halfing now (on my bikes), and
it's not a mass of confusion. Last week I think I mis-shifted only
about thirty times, but fortunately, spent a total of about twenty-
five seconds correcting.

[RBW] Re: new bars spy shot-- Alba-moose?

2012-02-04 Thread Geoff
Hi Marc,

Jeremy's correct. The non-moosey version will be handlebar only, like an
Albatross, Mustache, or Noodle. So, if you've got a bike with, say, an
Albatross bar and are considering replacing it with the non-moosey
NewBar(or whatever it'll end up being called), the stem you've got on the
bike now should work just fine.

I'm seriously considering replacing the Bullmoose bar on my Hunqapillar
with the moosey version of the NewBar. It looks great, I love the
triangulation the extensions form, and it'll give me a little bit more of
an upright ride that I couldn't get with the Bullmoose bar.

[RBW] Jack Taylor photos - build assist (and many parts) from RBW

Michael Lawrence helped me get this frame in about '99. After email
correspondence, we spoke on the phone; he was very pleasant to deal
with. These were the last frames done by Jack and Norman, and were
apparently hanging in Michael's attic or barn or ?. He said, over the
phone, that the blue bike showed Norman's wavery hand in the lug
lining, so that's the one I chose.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/6818454705/in/set-72157629173650165/

I was just getting back into cycling again, after a 15 year hiatus.
Thanks to Rivendell, I was excited again about bikes, and GP helped me
choose some new parts (lugged stem, brooks saddle, Rolly-Polly's) to
go with a mix of new and NOS parts. For example, the Campagnolo Hi-Lo
hubset found a mate in a set of new Campagnolo Montreal rims.

Hope you like the pics from my dinky Olympus cycling camera.

Anyway, it's a great bike, a lovely rider, with plenty of memories.

[RBW] Hunqapillar Price Increase

2012-02-04 Thread Geoff
I was browsing the Riv site and was surprised to see the fairly
considerable(and very recent) price increase for the Hunqapillar frame.
The frames made in Taiwan(like mine) increased to $1,800, while the
Waterford/Wisconsin made frames increased to $1,875. That's up from $1,500
and $1,600, respectively. That's a 20% increase for the Taiwan made
frames, and a 17.19% increase for the Waterford/Wisconsin made frames.

Check it out: Hunqapillarhttp://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-hunqapillar.htm

The other models seem to be holding to their current prices.

[RBW] Re: Build kits!

2012-02-04 Thread Jay
If this had been available in the summer I would have probably done
it.
Since it wasn't, I spent a lot of time working with an excellent LBS
to spec my Sam - mostly because Riv was a lot more $ for the same
stuff.
This way would have come out about the same price, less effort and
probably a few smarter decisions on parts.

Maybe for the next one.

Welcome!

I really dig the light and lean build you have in those pictures. No

I ride considerably smaller bikes. I used to own a 54cm RIvendell

[RBW] Re: Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?

2012-02-04 Thread Pat
Guys,

I can't tell you how helpful your responses have been. Thank you!

I could have been more clear in my question. My concern was with the
build and ride quality of the San Marcos. The whole Rivendell thing is
relatively new to me, but I am enthused about what I'm reading. The
only negative comment I've seen from a Riv owner after much searching
on the internew relates to bike color.

My purpose in looking into Riv bikes was to find something more
suitable for all day rides, SAG supported touring, etc. I have a
Specialized Roubaix which I greatly enjoy, but the old neck and
shoulders begin to talk to me after several hours on the saddle.

Dick, I really appreciated our conversation today. I emailed you a few
more questions. Thanks.

I own a San Marcos frame, and had a

San Marcos is built to the same quality as the Ram but uses
  nicer

  actually stamped
Rivendell!  In terms of ride quality, that is still
  up in the air
since I have actually not built it up to ride.  I have
  a 2TT version

  about the
  same as my Soma Stanyan.

  also sold by
Riv.  I bought and built it new about eight years ago,
  and for me it
rides better than anything, including a Waterford 1250
  that I also
have in my stable.  It's handling is quick and sporty,
  but
predicatable and confidence inspiring in a way that is
  hard to
describe, and it takes long downhills like nobody's
  business.  It
truly is the last bike I'd give up, and most Riv
  afficionados regard
the Heron as in the family, if not a true Rivendell.
   I received one
of the Riv headbadge logo decals in an order from RBW
  HQ, slapped that
sucker on the seat tube, so now I am all set!  At

  don't like the SOMA
San Marcos (not likely), it should be easy to sell and
  recoup at least
most of your investment.  The SOMA line has a
  following of its own,
and when when you combine that with the Riv connection
  (much like my
Waterford made Heron)you can appeal to two groups of
  loyalists.
Best of luck, and let the list know what you decide.

[RBW] Re: Which are more puncture resistant? Supremes vs Pasela TGs

2012-02-04 Thread Mike On A Bike
I have 35mm Mara Supremes on my Quickbeam and will be getting 40's on
my Sam Hillborne (next week!). I've ridden probably 5,000 miles on the
Maras after wearing out the Jack Browns the Quickbeam came with, and I
must say they have a great feel and very good durability. I've gotten
holes in two because of nails, and I just damaged a third as my
stainless fender came undone and ripped it up some. When subjected to
normal use they are more than reliable, have a long tread life, and
have a really fun, light feel.

I may be going to Marathon's w/ greenguard on the QB rather than
repairing my Maras. Rode those a while on a geared bike and really
enjoyed them. I think the 32 beats the Pasela mightily in quality. They
list as heavy but they don't feel it, and with the the 7-10k mile life
Riv estimates and @ $42 each, they're a real deal for a high mileage
commuter.

pretty light and fast rolling for a 38mm wide tire. I've ridden Urban
Max 700x32, Pasela TG 700x32 and standard Pasela blackwalls 700x35 and
also the Ribmo in 700x35 (32 actual) the Ribmo is a tough tire similar
to the Supremes but a little heavier. If you want no Flats dry the
Marathon Plus or the new Greenguard Marathon I think those are as good

When I got my Sam Hillborne this summer I treated myself to a set of

Riding home in the rain today I got a Puncture!!! Not a pinch flat,
not a bad valve stem, a puncture.

Unacceptable! What if I had been late for work?

Couldn't find the culprit so I washed and dried the tire in my kids'
bathtub (never done that before, seems like a good idea though) and
ended up mounting an almost new Pasela TG I had in the closet.

So, did I just get unlucky or are the Supremes not good enough for the
roads around here? Are Paselas any better or do I need to go back to
  SMPs?

Vital stats - puncture was in the rear tire (where else?) with about
2000 km on it, 80 psi.

I know some people are willing to accept the occasional flat if the
tires offers exceptional comfort or speed or whatever. That's fine for
them, I just want to get to work and home again without getting my
  hand dirty.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-04 Thread Scott Mead
In the past, the yearly rebate was a really nice surprise gift ... and
nothing I really thought about as I made purchases during the year.
Since the system has changed, I may think about it just a hair more,
but it's still something I'll see (as John mentioned) as a very nice
thank you and not some kind of member benefit that I'm entitled
to. I understand that this economy tends to put us all in a mode of
trying to maximize every possible dollar, though, so being aware of
how the new system works is a good thing.

If it helps make life easier, perhaps we could just work it like this:

Since the rebates expire in 120 days (or thereabouts), just buy stuff
without worrying about it for each 120-day period ... then at the end
of that period, buy something nice for yourself that equals your
available rebate and start over. In other words, get the stuff you
need without thinking of rebates from January through April ... then
on April 30, use your available rebate dollars to get something extra.
Do the same for May-August and September-December. Just mark your
calendar so you don't forget ... but John did say the grace period is
incredibly long, so I'm sure if you do forget, you won't be denied.

Looking at it that way, you buy stuff as usual and get a free (or
close enough) gift for yourself 3 times each year! Maybe that's the
spirit in which it was intended?

It's steel!!) with the skinny Sun Rhyno wheelset with 40 mm Ritchey
Speed Maxes for a couple of months, I finally got around to going to
the fabric store and buying a roll of 1 1/2' ribbon wherewith to
provide the SnoCat SLs with rim strips (I was tempted to buy some very
pretty brocade type ribbon but saved my $$ and bought basic black) so
I could re-install the Big Apples. Today's ride was on the BA wheelset
at about 12/18 psi, and I was once again surprised and pleased at how
well the 60 mm BAs roll; on pavement -- tho' they are faster at a few
psi more: say 20/25 -- but especially on firm dirt and gravel; I swear
up and down that they roll ***as well*** on the sub 1 sand, packed
clay, woodcut debris and light gravel of the route I took as they do
(at 12/18) on smooth pavement. (As I was cruising at 18 mph on the
gravel verge of the bike path, a youngster passed me (on pavement) and
said, Nice beast!) Me, I'd rather push a soft BA on pavement than
push a hard, skinny, sub 50 mm tire on dirt.

So, what's y'all's preference for combination on/off road riding? Fat
and soft on pavement, or skinny, hard 42s on dirt?

Patrick God willing, will pick up my 35 mm Kojaks for the Rhyno Lite
wheelset -- strictly pavement! -- tomorrow Moore

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-04 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
I see this from 2 sides...

As a Riv customer... I like the old system better. Getting the once a year
lump sum felt like a gift with substance. The new system feels like a
quarter from grandma. I remember reading somewhere in one of the spiels
about charitable contributions that donating $10,000 to one charity has
significantly more value than donating $1 each to 10,000 charities. I feel
like the same principal applies to the old v new rebate system.

But I also see this as a guy who has worked at small business and as a
former small business owner... and having visited Riv HQ. I don't believe
this is some sort of scheme to pad anyone's salary. I have no doubt that
Riv spends a lot of time financially treading water. Giving away a bunch of
merchandise in the first quarter of every year under the old system can't
be helpful. Spreading that dispursement out in small chunks throughout the
year has got to be easier to absorb.

I'd rather have the occasional $5-10 than have them discontinue the rebates
all together. There are places I shop because they're cheap but my
attraction to Riv goes beyond that. The rebate is gravy.

Go to the third map down here and look for the Mikiki district to see the

Note - Tantalus is steeper and has more switch backs than Round Top.
However, the view on RT is amazing.

[RBW] Re: Kojak!

2012-02-04 Thread Joe K
I just took Ritchey Tom Slicks 26x1.0 off my wife's XO-1; nothing
wrong with them except they were hell to mount and dismount. I'm
putting on Pasela TG with kevlar bead...got one mounted yesterday, and
it was MUCH easier to mount. Only 260g, says the packaging, so fairly
light. I'm hoping it performs well. My wife wanted the TG model, so
that's what we bought...and she tends to roll through debris that I
avoid. The Tom Slicks had wire beads.

I used the 559X32 mm (1.25) Pasela and was less than overwhelmed. The
Kojak rolls better and is certainly more flat resistant; of course it
costs more than twice as much.

What 559X1 tires did you use? I haven't ridden the Kojaks enough to
say for sure, but I *think* they roll as well as the tiny, light (198
gr) and supple NOS 559 Specialized Turbos, hitherto my benchmark for
  fast, 559 tires.

In 26 x 1.0 I used the Ritchey Tom Slicks, the Continental GPs and Pr1mo
Racers in particular.  The Specialized tires I have never even seen.  The
Ritcheys were prone to casing failures so I stopped using them although they
were pretty fast.  The Pr1mos were really fragile- but fast- and I stopped
using those.  I used the Specialized Fatboy 1.25s and was underwhelmed by
 those.

The smaller wheels seem more susceptible to tire performance than 700C
wheels, IME.  Something I don't get about 26 wheels is that almost every
tire maker that makes tires for that size seems to think they have to be
built like tanks with thick rubber, honking tread patterns, puncture proof
BS, yadda yadda yadda.  You end up with a 1.25 or 1.5 wide tire that weighs
600 g.  A light high performance tire for 559 wheels is hard to find.

I must factor in the much greater weight of the
Kojaks -- the 559X1.35 wire beads are just under 400 grams -- which
seems to add to the inertial feel of the wheels (particularly
noticeable on a fixed gear), but again, both the 559 and 622 pairs
seem to be as good rolling as any tire I've used.

I also seem to feel that the Kojaks are more supple at similar
pressures than the Paselas -- certainly I was surprised by the feel of
  the new 35s.

Thanks for that.  I am trying to remember if I have seen the Kojaks at
Hiawatha Cyclery (since that's the only bike shop I go to, I wouldn't have
seen them anywhere else).  I've had one pair of Schwalbe tires, some racy 355
size ones back when I had my Birdy folder.  They were better than the stock
tires (which were cheap and cheesy).  But Schwalbe's over-emphasis on flat
protection leaves me cold.  The tires end up being way too heavy and at least
in one's hand seem like they would be slow and lifeless on the road.  I am
usually not that bothered by flats, I normally only get 3-4 per year with the
Paselas which have thin rubber and no puncture protection type stuff (I don't
use the TGs).  We've got no goatheads around here and while there's some
broken glass it's not as bad as many places.

Too many years of bike racing- performance and speed are still a primary
interest for me when riding a bike.  I am not happy on a bike over 25 lbs and
not happy if it doesn't feel fast.  I want lightness, nimbleness and speed
since I ride for fun almost exclusively (even when riding to work- I do it
because it's fun).  But I also dislike plastic frames and wheels with too-few
spokes, and I prefer DT friction shifters... and I've reached an age where
Lycra is not such a good idea.

2012-02-04 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
Sort of a side track from the OP but regarding wheel size trends... My wife
has a Kona brand commuter type bike. She's 5'3. The frame's a 50cm or so
(I forget exactly and it's not available to measure at the moment). It has
700c wheels. The top of the back wheel is level with the bottom of the
seat. It has fenders and a rear rack. The rack is so far above the
braze-ons that it made more sense to zip-tie it to the seat rails. It's a
perfect example of why wheel size as a trend is foolish. The wheels are way
to big for the bike... poor design. The wife's Betty Foy is 650b and is
much more proportionally appropriate.

I can also recommend the Kojak 35 mm's. Being close to 33 mm on standard

fenders, and I've enjoyed them for two years now. Would love to be able to

Shuttle Update: Good news... Wilderness Voyageurs (WV) provided me
with what I consider a very reasonable rate for 2 vans (to shuttle
approx 25 passengers plus bikes and gear). They have a large rack on
top of one van, and a box trailer for the balance of the bikes and
gear. The price quote is $415, which translates to roughly $17 per
person (if we have 25), or $28 per person (if we have 15), etc... you
get the idea. We pay for the vans and trailer, regardless of the
number of people. Either way I think that's a very reasonable price
(compared to other quotes for large buses). I would like to propose
leaving our cars in Cumberland (or optionally Frostburg) and getting
shuttled back on Sunday (I will explain why in a moment).

WV is located in Ohiopyle. PA just off the trail. As we pass through
Ohiopyle on Sunday (Apr 22), we CAN opt to use WV to shuttle us up to
Fallingwater, IF folks would like to take a tour. The cost would be
$25 per van (from WV HQ), which adds only $2 per person. I have sent
in an inquiry to the Fallingwater people requesting a group tour rate
(normally $22 individually). We'll see if they can accommodate a
group of 25 for the Noon time slot; THEN it's up to us to decide
whether we'd like to include this tour or not. Another option would
be to have a nice, relaxing lunch in Ohiopyle. I'd like your
 thoughts, please.

Next up will be a decision on lodging and shuttle options. The WV
folks made a pretty good case for leaving our cars in Cumberland MD,
citing better parking options, and actually by leaving cars in
Cumberland, another advantage would be to allow late arrivals on
Friday night (or even Saturday morning), by not having to pre-shuttle
at a predetermined time. Moreover, we can check in with WV at
Ohiopyle on Sunday, and provide a pretty accurate time estimate for
when we'll need pickup in Connellsville, which is 17 miles down
river. The disadvantage to this is that it tacks on additional time
and distance for our friends coming from the North. But Sunday will
be a shorter day, and I'd anticipate arriving in Connellsville around
3, putting us back in Cumberland by around 5 PM.

For those who would prefer to start in Frostburg (which is 16 miles up
trail from Cumberland), this would give you a later start on Sat AM
(while you wait for the rally to catch up) and it would spare you 16
miles of additional climbing (albeit at a gradual 1% grade or less).
I'm sure we can convince the WV crew to drop people in Frostburg on
the way back into Cumberland on Sunday, but they may tack on a small
surcharge. Another option for those wishing to start from Frostburg
on Saturday would be to arrive in Cumberland during the day on Friday,
leaving your car in Cumberland, then riding 16 miles to Frostburg up
the climb to a hotel in Frostburg... then you can sleep in on Sat
while the rest of us huff and puff our way up to meet you.

Finally, for lodging options in Confluence, I would strongly recommend
reserving the Paddlers Lane Retreat guest house, which can accommodate
at least a dozen, and costs about $425 a night (which is a bargain if
we fill it). Here's a link to their site

Sort of a side track from the OP but regarding wheel size trends... My wife has
a Kona brand commuter type bike. She's 5'3. The frame's a 50cm or so (I forget
exactly and it's not available to measure at the moment). It has 700c wheels.
The top of the back wheel is level with the bottom of the seat. It has fenders
and a rear rack. The rack is so far above the braze-ons that it made more sense
to zip-tie it to the seat rails. It's a perfect example of why wheel size as a
trend is foolish. The wheels are way to big for the bike... poor design. The
wife's Betty Foy is 650b and is much more proportionally appropriate.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis vs. Sam

2012-02-04 Thread James Warren

I have both. They ride very similarly. With the Atlantis, you get greater tire
capability and slightly more touring capability.

When set up with the same drop bars, I have noticed no less speed-capability of
the Atlantis compared to the Hillborne. I have in the past set up the Hillborne
with drops, but I don't have it that way now. With Hillborne with bullmoose and
Atlantis with Noodles, the ride of the Atlantis is much sportier of the two,
but I attribute that to the handlebar difference.

Anyway, my experience has been that both can be ridden equally fast, and the
Atlantis has a few more capabilities in the big tire and touring categories. I
think the only reason to choose Hillborne over Atlantis is to save money. In
that respect, the Hillborne might be a better value. But if the money is not an
issue in this range, I think the Atlantis is the way to go.

Atlantis all the way.if I had the money I would get one for sure.
Its been Rivendell's flagship model for years now..the Hillborne
is a fine machine for sure but it is designed to be more affordable
and flexible (fit wise) whereas the Atlantis is a little more refined
and traditional from a design perspective. I think the Atlantis is a
little beefier and can take wider tires also.important, if you
want to carry a load or you are a heavier rider and want to use
slightly wider tires sometimes. I think the Hillborne would be fine
also if you are under 200 and want to load up modestly. Just my
opinion but it is another almost $1000 but..it could be the most
versatile bike you may ever own and life is short. If the money isn't
too much of an issue I'd go Atlantis in the right size and never look
back...

I just got an Atlantis. I have been riding it every day, since the
weather here has been unseasonably warm.

The Atlantis is not slow. (There are a lot of good things I could say
about it, you know how it is when you get a new bike. But that isn't
  the topic at hand.)

The major factors limiting your speed are air resistance, and the
  power you  can generate.

The weight of tubing is inconsequential.

I haven't ridden a Sam Hillborne, it looks like a great bike.

But the Atlantis is not sluggish.- Hide quoted text -

[RBW] Re: FS: Assorted Bags

I knew that bike was 52cm. Congrats with the bike!

I am the proud new owner of Duy's 52 cm Ram, which I bought to replace
a 54 which was a tad too big.  I want to ride this bike long
distances, so fit is everything.  Anyway, in case anyone was wondering
the bike truly is a 52 and rides great.  Duy sent it to me via Amtrak,
which ends up being a great way to ship bikes if you live near a
 station with baggage service.

Also, over the years I have purchased and tried numerous bag set ups
for my bikes.  Over time I've learned what works for me and what
doesn't.  As a result, I have several bags to sell.  I'll be putting
these on Craigslist, but thought I would offer them up here first.  I
will add actual shipping costs to the final price.  Email me directly
for pics and more info.  Thanks!

[RBW] Kojaks

2012-02-04 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Schwalbe rates these as 4 stars for puncture resistance vs 5 for the
Supremes and I think 6 for the Marathon Pluses.

Would these good commuter tires in this context?
Would slime tube work for this application at 70-80 psi? I've read
that they are excellent at mtb pressures but fail at road pressures.

My commute is increasing from 25 km RT to almost 40. So any insights
or advice would be much appreciated.
