JPP, that is really a function of where you live and work, and your local
bike theft stats. In the past 9 years I've left some nice bikes (e.g.,
Richard Sachs, Curt Goodrich, Rivendell Rambo, carbon fiber racing bike)
locked up all day outside my place of work as well as outside restaurants,
bars, markets, stores, etc., in Madison, WI, literally thousands of times
and have not had so much as a blinky light stolen. I'm moving to San
Francisco in a few months and will surely have to change my habits.

I appreciate that these are show bikes, and it's exactly the point that
they are exquisite and perhaps even, in some cases, a bit too ambitions,
impractical, or daring. It's great that in a venue like this the builders
can just go for it and make bikes that showcase their skills and
imagination, and leave the pragmatic issues aside just for once.

Yes, but it's even better when -- as is the case with the Oregon

Sometimes the limits on the imagination are those dreary elements of
practicality.

I think the Oregon Manifest is fantastic, and I think Interbike is

There's plenty of room in the bike universe for a full spectrum of

[RBW] Re: NAHBS

2012-03-05 Thread Jeremy Till
I had a busy weekend, so only made it for a couple of hours on Saturday
morning. It was the same overwhelming barrage of eye candy that I remember
from San Jose 5(!) years ago, except with many more people this time.
Highlights for me:

-Finally getting to meet Rick Hunter, who's work and quiet style I've
appreciated for a long time. Nice guy. His off-road touring bike with the
split-handlebar stem was the top of my niftiest list for the show.
-Talked some with Eric from Winter Cycles, who I've been aware of but never
really spent that much time looking at his work. He had a great
stripped-down but functional fixed gear with fenders, generator lights, and
a Wald steel handlebar brazed into the stem.
-Got an atmo sticker for my tool box, straight out of the hands of the
man himself. He always brings the same bikes to NAHBS--a couple of his
signature road bikes and a cross bikes, all done up with his trademark red
and white Joe Bell paint job. But man, I could spend hours staring at the
details on them; not just in the frame, but the assembly as well.
-Talked with the folks from Selle Anatomica about the new Titanico X, their
saddle for those of us north of 200 lbs that they were debuting at the
show. I'll be getting one for the upcoming QB build. They had an AHH set
up on a trainer as a demonstrator.
-Through a friend, I got to meet Chris Chance and Charlie Kelly! Cool,
laid back guys.

Some of the bikes are always concept cars, that show off new ideas,

I don't think they're too nice. Bikes are made to be ridden. In
Portland I regularly saw an Ahearne mixte locked up on the street that
had been displayed at NAHBS. It may have won an award there. At bike

[RBW] Don't read if you don't like heresy (a.k.a. my new road bike which isn't a Rivendell)

2012-03-05 Thread William
Thanks to Rivendell, my entire stable of bikes got turned over in the last
few years. That process started in 2009. The last remaining bike I had
from my past life was a custom road bike (Davidson Signature), but even
that, I decided, was too small. I corrected that somewhat with a tall and
long stem, which looked a little goofy but improved the situation. The
nagging shortcoming to my Davidson was that I can't run anything wider than
a 700x25. Hence it's for sale on ebay, as many of you have seen (now it
has a bid!).

To replace it, I had bounced around several ideas. First off, a 59 Roadeo.
I'm virtually certain a Roadeo would be perfect for what I want from this
particular spot in my stable, but I'm on a bike department budget that made
that impossible. A San Marcos was out of the question, mainly because I'm
in between sizes. So, I considered the forthcoming Rawland Nordavinden,
was tempted by a super low sale price on the VO Rando frame, and kept an
eye out for a 58 Rambouilet.

My search ended when I got turned on to Black Mountain Cycles, a one-man
shop in Point Reyes Station. Mike Varley does the design and Taiwan source
thing for both a road frameset and a really slick monster cross. Mike has
a long history of design in the bike industry, and he's got a spectacular
operation. We had an open control in Pt Reyes Station last month on an SF
Randonneurs brevet. I stopped in, checked out a couple measurements, and
bought it. Our RBA was pretty entertained that my receipt for that open
control was for a frameset. Anyway, I drove out there and picked it up
yesterday, and got started on the build. So now I have a road bike that
makes it easier to get the bars up, takes Jack Browns without fenders, and
Roly Polys with fenders. It's entirely possible that I'll have the money
for a Roadeo someday, and riding this will get me ready to buy that with
confidence. Or maybe I'll get more refined opinions and do a Custom. This
bike gets me to a MUCH more useful road experience at an incredible price.
I highly recommend giving Black Mountain Cycles a look if you are in the
market for a $600 road frameset.

Pictures show the progress and status:

[RBW] Re: Don't read if you don't like heresy (a.k.a. my new road bike which isn't a Rivendell)

2012-03-05 Thread Ryan Ray
If there was a 64cm in either style (preferably the cross frame) I would
order one today.

- Ryan

On Monday, March 5, 2012 11:01:28 AM UTC-8, William wrote:

Thanks to Rivendell, my entire stable of bikes got turned over in the last
few years. That process started in 2009. The last remaining bike I had
from my past life was a custom road bike (Davidson Signature), but even
that, I decided, was too small. I corrected that somewhat with a tall and
long stem, which looked a little goofy but improved the situation. The
nagging shortcoming to my Davidson was that I can't run anything wider than
a 700x25. Hence it's for sale on ebay, as many of you have seen (now it
 has a bid!).

To replace it, I had bounced around several ideas. First off, a 59
Roadeo. I'm virtually certain a Roadeo would be perfect for what I want
from this particular spot in my stable, but I'm on a bike department budget
that made that impossible. A San Marcos was out of the question, mainly
because I'm in between sizes. So, I considered the forthcoming Rawland
Nordavinden, was tempted by a super low sale price on the VO Rando frame,
and kept an eye out for a 58 Rambouilet.

2012-03-05 Thread Peter Pesce
Very nice!

It is indeed rare to find a road frame that will take 32's or even 33.3
JB's.
I was looking for such a thing myself and the Soma Stanyan seemed like the
best option. But once you're spending $700 you may as well spend $1k, and
then... well, you know how that goes!

Joseph Ahearne was a real nice guy. His designs are really exploring new
space. He had a snow bike, and a Monster Tour, and an urban mixte with a
 kiddie seat on the back.

I interrupted Tom Ritchey's lunch and yet he kept asking me questions
about my reactions to the show. The free beer and 40 Anniversary Ritchey
pint glass was a touch I didn't mind telling him I appreciated. It was
really great to see Jay, since I didn't get to say goodbye to him when he
 moved to Arizona

Mitch Pryor was also a real good guy. I admire his earnest motivation to
keep MAP a one-man-show. He's young but he's got a wise vibe to himself.
Of the young turks I have to say he might be my favorite

Steve Rex made the effort to come out, despite the massive 8 blocks of
travel from his showroom to the convention center. I'd say it is
extraordinarily likely I'll be buying a frameset from Steve in the near
future. He's a pro, knows his niche, and does delicious and clean work.

Jay Sycip heads up Cielo (Chris King). I really like his passion for the
real end to end craft of bike making. His fire for his ideas is really
 infectious and inspiring.

I had a nice long talk with the son of the founder of White Industries.
I've talked a lot about the ultimate compact double crankset. I'm saving
up for a 48/32 VBC crankset, after discussing a couple details with him
 that I'd never noticed before.

unfortunately most of the attention was from people asking if I worked for

Lots of beautiful bikes there, and I did ride the AHH at the Selle

NAHBS

Great seeing the few of you I recognized (!) at the NAHBS. I think the H
needs to be deleted -- come on, Shimano?!? Mavic?!? Also, the NA --
plenty of non-USA stuff there. I'm not complaining -- I thought most of
what I saw there was great. Special mention (by me) to Shamrock -- their
website is lugoftheIrish! Also a local SF framebuilder, Rafael --
interesting guy -- despite the carbon fork!

Anybody else notice how many wheels have disc brakes? And the Wheel Fanatyx
building/truing stand. Impressive -- and expensive at $2k! A bit
disappointed in the register of the fancy gauges, though. They measure down
to .1mm -- DTSwiss measure down to .01mm, and the stand costs less than
half.

My camera died before I could take any photos, so please keep posting them!

And one final note -- I saw Jon Grant (illustrator -- who, by the way,
designed the Hands on Wheels logo) -- recently lost his 5-year-old son
Auggie to Leukemia. He's marketing his drawings, prints and T-shirts to
raise money for pediatric cancer research. He told me Joe Bartoe has his
stuff on his site. PLEASE BUY HIS STUFF. He's an incredibly wonderful guy
-- and it's a good cause!

[RBW] Re: Grip King Supreme--Version 2.0 is about to be unveiled!

2012-03-05 Thread Lawnsbyt
William,

Great job on the aftermarket modification. I installed the the u-
shaped contraptions just fine on my Grip Kings, and went out for a 30
mile spin through Seattle this morning. The increased stability is
very noticeable, my feet felt more planted through the pedal stroke.
The pedal also feels grippier having more support on the sides.
Conditions were windy and dry this morning so I haven't seen how it
works during rain, but it should help quite a bit. Great Job offering
this to the group.

On Feb 24, 3:42 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:
Hopefully you either ignored or have long forgotten my youtube documenting
a DIY modification for my Grip King pedals

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo0YlOqqISs

Well, based on that, and the fact that neither my Dad nor I am very
efficient with our time, we collaborated to make Version 2.0.  And by
collaborated, I mean I did a sketch and my Dad in his machine shop garage
 did all the work.

The Grip King Supreme cage mod is a cage that you'll bolt into your Grip
King Pedals, that will give your feet a lot better lateral support.  See
the video to see what I mean.  The Version 2.0 ones are shaped a lot
better, especially in the middle, there's a milled out relief that still
allows the sole of your shoes to fully engage the nubs on the Grip King
 cages.

My Dad is shipping me several sets, and I will be offering them to sell.
This is a free-time thing that my dad just did for fun.  If we were
charging time and materials, we'd probably have to sell them for $250 a
pair.  Seriously, you should see the press/bender tooling he built for this
project.  Anyhow, I'm not going to just give them away, even though I'm
giving them away.  I might give a set to Rivendell.  So I'll be asking $25
shipped priority mail.  I will post copious pictures and maybe another
youtube when they are actually in my hands.

I think my Dad is sending me 7 pairs.  I'll keep one, and send one to
Rivendell.  I will have 5 more sets available, and am enthusiastic about
making a lot more since my dad worked so hard on the tooling.  Stay tuned.

[RBW] WWT 170 Cranks for 175

2012-03-05 Thread Bill Lucas
Hi,

I have an excess of cranks.

The first is from my lunch time ride, a 1986 Scwhinn Passage. The
crank is a Sakae CX with 50/46/30 in 170, include the original cup and
cone BB. The bicycle was nearing unused when I bought it. All sizes
came with 170s.

The second is a Sugino XD triple arm set in 170. These are nearly
new, but very marked from my wife getting chain suck.

I am after 175 110/74 cranks with or without rings.

Thanks,
Bill Lucas

[RBW] Re: FS - Sam Hillborne - Orange with Canti brakes $1800 (Seattle)

2012-03-05 Thread Tom Taylor
Hi all - the frame here has sold. Some parts, in particular the
wheelset and tires will be reposted soon once I figure out what stays
and what goes.

I had some reports that trying to contact me via the list did not work
- please use email instead if you are interested.

Cheers.

On Feb 28, 4:21 pm, Tom Taylor taylor...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi all  -

I have a Sam Hillborne, of the earlier orange cantilever brake
variety. In very good condition cosmetically with less than 200 miles
on a professional build composed of almost all new parts.

 Build details below.

 More photos
 at:http://www.flickr.com/photos/75431624@N03/sets/72157629444619317/

I am in Seattle and would love to sell local.  Otherwise we'll figure
 out packing and shipping.

It's a great ride but just not my thing.  I've been riding an RB-1 for
years and while the ride was absolutely a blast, I finally tired of
the limited tire clearance and ugly hacks rqruired to make fenders
work.  I swung too far here though, and want to get back to something
more sporty.  On the off chance anyone wants to trade a Roadeo or
 similar, I might be game...

 Anyway, more:

To replicate this build would cost ~$2225 before taxes and misc. small
 parts - and that's not including a rear der. or crankset - I didn't
price those out since they are vintage, but figure another $200 for
new equipment there and you're pushing $2500. Also, if you like the
orange, like cantilever brakes, and don't want a second top tube, this
 is the way to go.

Full disclosure: I am the second owner of this frame (bought used
because I wanted canti's and no second top tube). there are small
paint chips here and there - not very many. The worst offender is
pictured on the seat stay and is the result of a bag hupe
(http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/r9.htm). The headset has some marring on the
lock nut, and the front brake barrel adjuster also has some marring.
Overall though, this is very minor stuff - frame and components all in
very good condition mechanically and cosmetically.

nagging shortcoming to my Davidson was that I can't run anything wider than
a 700x25.  Hence it's for sale on ebay, as many of you have seen (now it

To replace it, I had bounced around several ideas. First off, a 59
  Roadeo.
I'm virtually certain a Roadeo would be perfect for what I want from
 this
particular spot in my stable, but I'm on a bike department budget that
  made
that impossible. A San Marcos was out of the question, mainly because
 I'm
in between sizes.

Mike Varley does the design and Taiwan
  source
thing for both a road frameset and a really slick monster cross. Mike
 has
a long history of design in the bike industry, and he's got a
 spectacular
operation. We had an open control in Pt Reyes Station last month on an
 SF
Randonneurs brevet. I stopped in, checked out a couple measurements,
 and
bought it. Our RBA was pretty entertained that my receipt for that open
control was for a frameset. Anyway, I drove out there and picked it up
yesterday, and got started on the build. So now I have a road bike that
makes it easier to get the bars up, takes Jack Browns without fenders,
 and
Roly Polys with fenders. It's entirely possible that I'll have the
 money
for a Roadeo someday, and riding this will get me ready to buy that with
confidence. Or maybe I'll get more refined opinions and do a Custom.
   This
bike gets me to a MUCH more useful road experience at an incredible
 price.
I highly recommend giving Black Mountain Cycles a look if you are in
 the
market for a $600 road frameset.

[RBW] Re: Grip King Supreme--Version 2.0 is about to be unveiled!

2012-03-05 Thread William
Excellent. I'm really pleased you like them so far.

Hopefully you either ignored or have long forgotten my youtube

Well, based on that, and the fact that neither my Dad nor I am very
efficient with our time, we collaborated to make Version 2.0. And by
collaborated, I mean I did a sketch and my Dad in his machine shop
 garage
  did all the work.

If we were
charging time and materials, we'd probably have to sell them for $250 a
pair. Seriously, you should see the press/bender tooling he built for
 this
project. Anyhow, I'm not going to just give them away, even though I'm
giving them away. I might give a set to Rivendell. So I'll be asking
 $25
shipped priority mail.

Stay
 tuned.
