[RBW] Re: Mounting Supernova E3

2012-04-25 Thread Zack
I have the supernova with the proprietary "multimount" bolted to the front
of my M12. Works like a charm.

I think Peter White suggests that the E3 is too heavy for most other
mounting solutions that are not specifically designed to hold the weight of
the light, but ymmv.

Re: [RBW] Re: new Roadeo

2012-04-25 Thread Steven Frederick
As I recall, since the Roadeo is intended as an alternative to carbon bikes
for fast club rides, the figuring was that most would end up running some
style of brifter so the DT shifter mounts were left off in favor of cable
stops.

[RBW] Re: Mounting Supernova E3

2012-04-25 Thread Steve Park
The Boulder Bicycles light mount works well for mounting my E3 Pro
(euro mounting tab version) to my M12. I added a 1 cm spacer to move
the light out to the side so the light body clears the rack and the BB
mount arm with room to spare.

fwiw This set up is plenty sturdy even though I right off-road and
subpar roads a lot.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Lugged stem in an unusual 13cm length

2012-04-25 Thread Mojo
I bought this stem back around the first of the year 2001 to go on my
Rivendell Road custom. I don't think 13cm lugged stems have been available
for many years, so this is a rare item. Grant told me to be a 11 or 12cm
stem but I went longer. Now I am back to a 12cm and like it (advice: listen
to Grant). So this stem is for sale for the price I paid for the 12cm
replacement, $185 shipped in CONUS. It is in perfect condition except for
normal use quill marks, and a line from the clamp for the brass bell. It is
shinier and less "nickel" than the one I just bought.

[RBW] Re: Mounting Supernova E3

2012-04-25 Thread Tom Harrop
I've mounted them on both a Mark's rack and a Nitto mini-front. My methods
were a bit kludgey and the aesthetics may displease the rando crowd but I
can tell you they work fine.

For the mini-front I bolted the Supernova multimount to the hole in the
front tab of the rack. That gives a great light position and I don't think
water spray has been a problem because I have the long Berthoud fenders.
It's also protected from bumps by the tyre. Photo
here.
The downside is that it's highly visible when the bike is parked and I'm a
bit worried it will get lifted.

On the Mark's I made a little mount by bending some stainless steel. It
worked out a quite similar shape to the mount VO
sells
 but
obviously heavier (maybe stronger too?). If I'd known about the VO mount
before I made it I probably would've just bought one of them. I attached
the mount to the right hand rack stay by using a spare daruma bolt, or you
can piggy-back it where the stay attaches to the rack (like in this
photo).
In this case the light is less visible and better protected under the
basket, but you have to put up with a bit of tyre shadow.

Good luck, I'd be interested to see some photos when you're done!

Ridiculously expensive, but I love them -- indestructible, don't move unless
and until you want them to, install in seconds and infinitely adjustable in
seconds, and the spring design leaves a little gap that the rear brake cable
can go through. Great product. Kind of ugly, though, and definitely not DIY.

Here's another pic of one on my son's Quickbeam:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/5645450187/in/set-72157626433454817/

I also used one on the downtube to protect a rebuilt MB-2 from damage from an
over-rotated Paul Flatbed. Can't find a pic.

As Steve Palincsar rightly pointed out at dinner Friday night before our
Saturday departure, however, it may not be the best idea to finish a build the
night before a 65 or 70 mile trail ride. His advice proved accurate when,
around lunch time Saturday, the bike's rider complained of a wobbly pedal, and
when I checked it, the left crank arm came off in my hand. And the crank bolt
was missing! But the gods were smiling -- we walked up the trail and found the
bolt about 150 yards away, and a passing Boy Scout Troop leader was carrying a
crank bolt wrench -- that's being prepared, for sure. Even heedless
knuckleheads (that's me!) catch a break now and again!

I have a mounted once almost new Nitto M-12. I'll throw in the light mount

I use that bag without a decaleur. With the leather strap sliped over the

Greetings,

possibilities.

Located in Berkeley. Local swap is ideal but willing to ship as well.

Thanks,

[RBW] Conundrum: where to place tail lights?

2012-04-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I use both rack-n-panniers and saddlebag (Banana currently; hope to trade a
nice Banana for a Junior) on the Fargo which of course limits suitable
placement for rear lights. I've got a bright flasher clamped to the lower
seatpost and (17" M frame) thus low enough to peep coyly from under the
Banana and over the rear tire AND between the struts of the rack's front
vertical, but this is obivously not the best place. I've got a 2AA red LED
maglite clamped under the left chainstay.

Suggestions for other, better placements, or am I SOL? Lights will have to
deal with off road riding and having the bike stuffed rudely into the back
of a small car, so end-of-rack does not work, at least as tried so far,
since the lights continually get knocked out of position when placed there.

Also, helmet mounting is out.

I do use plenty of reflective matieral, for what that's worth.

Thanks.

A billion stars go spinning through the night
Blazing high above your head;
But in you is the Presence that will be
When all the stars are dead.

[RBW] Re: FS: 59cm Joe/Joe Longlow

2012-04-25 Thread SISDDWG
Much appreciated, Patrick. The yellow frame and fork came out of the
Motobecane factory with an Astra head badge, I think. Motobecane built
that bike for a distributor in Washington State. That's what Sheldon
Brown says. The vintage would be in the 70's I would guess. It's a
very nice riding bike. Presently, I have it decommissioned and would
like to sell the frame and fork with a Simplex seat post, Stronglight
A9 headset, Huret down tube shifters, and Huret Challenge rear
deraillure and front deraillure, (new).

Vittorio Malagnini: on Facebook look up Malagnini. Vittorio died a
couple of years ago but he has two sons that build beautiful racing
bikes. Lucio is on Facebook and there is a photo of him and his father
Vittorio. Also, goole CicloRestauri. There is one other Malagnini in
the U.S.A. built by Lucio. Look up Italian Racing Journal. I sold the
Malagnini frame and fork recently to a gentleman just North of San
Fran. He did a very beautiful build.

"So many nice bikes, so little money!" Yeah. That's one of the reasons
I'm selling the Rivendell. I'm 72 a retired year old, on S.S. and out
of that bikes class.

Best to you.

[RBW] Conundrum: where to place tail lights?

2012-04-25 Thread Philip Williamson
Clip a blinkie to the saddlebag? I clip a super flash or PDW arc-welder class
blinkie to my left prat pocket. Each bike has a blinkie clipped to a brake
cable, and I clip it to the pocket when I saddle up.

Re: [RBW] Conundrum: where to place tail lights?

2012-04-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That's a real possibility for one of the two rear lights I like to use at
night, flashing and steady. The problem with all the LED tail lights I've
used is that they need to be more or less on-axis if they are to have full
effect. Clipping one to a saddlebag means that, usually, it will be
off-axis -- y'all have probably seen night riders with blinkies pointing
earth- or skyward and therefore giving only feeble illumination. I do have
a strobe (Lightman) that will work well even off-axis, but strobes use
batteries at a far higher rate than even brilliant LEDs: the Lightman has a
life of 2 hours on 2 fresh AAs.

However, I'll have to try my newer, more powerful blinkies off-axis. I just
got two original edition Vistalights and, let me tell you, LED blinkies
have come a long way, baby, in the last 20 years.

What is a PDW "arc welder class" blinkie?
