[RBW] Re: New triples and wider gearing from Campagnolo

2012-05-15 Thread Michael_S
been there, done that. I'm running a 10 speed Campy Centaur ( square
taper) triple that was originally 50-40-30 that I put a 28t small ring on.
I'm using an 8 speed shimaNo 11-30 cassette shifting with Simplex retro
friction down tube shifters. Centaur rear long cage derailleur too. 9
speed Record chain. Works great on my rando bike.

Campy Demographics? Baby Boomers with aging knees...

The 12-30 is nice. I could use a higher gear than 50/13, but I might miss
the 16t cog from my current 13-29. Guess I'll have to go 11 speed someday
to have it all...

I would rather have seen a 110/74 BCD ultra-compact double than the
triples. Lighter, simpler, lower Q, all that. I use a Record Triple
crank as a 46/30 double with a SRAM Apex drivetrain and 11-32 cassette, and
find that to be very useable gearing.

[RBW] Re: Rivet review?

2012-05-15 Thread Bill M.
I bought a mahogany Pearl Rivet (with Ti frame, no less) directly from Deb
& company at NAHBS in Sacramento. I only have 300 miles or do on it to
date. As far as it splitting the difference between a Brooks and an SA,
I'd say its firmer than either. That's not a bad thing necessarily, the
firm leather does a good job of supporting the sit bones which keeps the
softer stuff from crushing against the saddle. The SA is a different
approach entirely, it's leather is soft enough to act like a hammock and
supports you more because the leather is in tension under your weight.
What I find to be really stellar about the Rivet is the shape - the nose
is long and narrow, with a sharper flare out to the wider part of the
saddle. That keeps the edges of the saddle from contacting the inner
thighs, It gets out of the way better than the B17 or the SA.

One other rider in my club has a Diablo (the narrower one), and he likes it
a lot. He also probably rides more miles a week than I do a month.

I haven't been uncomfortable yet on the Rivet, and I expect it to get
better with more miles. I like it. And I have to admit, I only briefly
met Deb but I did like her too.

Re: [RBW] Rivet review?

2012-05-15 Thread qwerty
Hi Brian,

Sorry I can't help out with a Rivet saddle review, but if one of those
doesn't work out for you, you might consider looking for a B.17 in
maroon. Somewhat rare, but they do turn up for sale now and then. I
recently found one on eBay for my recent Hunqa acquisition. (I also
have a Haulin' Collin rack but it resides on my rSogn).

[RBW] WTB: your 60cm-ish 700c touring frame

2012-05-15 Thread Scot Brooks
I've decided my Sam is perfect the way it is, which means I'm setting up a
dedicated camping bike. As long as it takes 700c wheels, canti brakes, and low
rider front racks, I'm game. Trying to do this on a budget means that a new
Hunqapillar will have to wait.

Pardon me? I guess people that prefer metal can buy carbonif they stop
preferring metal.

Most of the people that prefer metal are those that prefer metal *instead of
* carbon. There's no third option (bamboo, plastic, marzipan). Some think
carbon cranks are ugly and metal ones look nice. Some think carbon cranks
are too expensive. Some people believe carbon cranks can't last 30 years
and metal ones can. Some think carbon cranks will break. Some people

Re: [RBW] Re: s240 up diablo?

2012-05-15 Thread Anne Paulson
Fabulous trip. I rode from my house in Los Altos to the Union City
BART, a good part of the ride in the Baylands. Since I was plenty
early, I had no trouble with bikes not being allowed. Note to other
riders who take the elevator down when they get to the Walnut Creek
BART station: you're supposed to run your ticket through the machine
when you get out. It's not obvious.

The Google directions from the BART to North Gate Road are correct
(more or less) but difficult to follow. You find yourself on the
Contra Costa Trail, and then at some point Google helpfully says "Turn
right." Um, yeah? There were a lot of chances to turn right. But I
managed to find my way to the bike path by the hospital, which was
delightful, and then to Walnut and North Gate, and up I went, starting
around 4:00.

At the junction, there were other riders of course, and all they could
talk about was the race. And then just after I left the junction to
continue climbing, as I was stopped to snack or put on a sweater or
something, three other bike tourists passed me, two of them women. I
wondered if they were us, but they were another bike touring party. I
speeded up to try to stay with them, ending up ahead of one of the
women and behind the other, pulling into the campground at around 6:20
or so.

I promptly became the laughingstock of the entire campground as I
dithered about trying to pick a campsite that would have flat spots to
camp, and also a place for Manny's hammock. Finally I decided to just
pick one, put up tent and began to cook dinner (what would end up to
be my first dinner. It was good, but as you'll see, it didn't take.) I
was just eating my asparagus and cooking my noodles when along came
Dustin. He didn't like the campsite I had wasted so much time picking,
and by that time neither did I, so we decided to move to a different
spot, the very spot we camped the last time I was with a Riv group. I
ate the rest of my dinner, packed up my tent, noticed that although
the initial campsite I had picked was pretty crummy it had a
spectacular view of the sun just going down in a haze of gold, and
moved to join Dustin.

We had our flashlights on by the time Manny, Tommy and Bill showed up.
Yay! Time for second dinnner. Dustin cooked us vegetables and some
delicious sausage. Manny, a prince among men, offered us all
bacon-wrapped hotdogs. Bacon-wrapped hotdogs! Yum. If it's good, it's
better with bacon. Or cream. Or both. I shared nothing, but next time
we go camping I'm cooking pancakes and Nutella for breakfast for all.

There was a gorgeous fire, but I'm still jetlagged from being in Spain
last week (I took one ride in the other Sierra Nevada) so I just went
to my tent to get something, and next thing I knew I was waking up and
it was 2 in the morning or something.

I got up in time to get the last of Bill's coffee and say goodbye to
him. He asked if he should summit Diablo before he went down to go to
work. Of course, I said stupidly, forgetting that by saying that, I
was committing myself to summiting it later. Now that it was light, I
could see everyone's bike. Dustin's I had already seen, a handsome
Atlantis gorgeously kitted with Saddlesack, front bag and a stylish
tweed handlebar bag. Manny's loaner Hunqa was a beauty as well, also
kitted with a shiny new Saddlesack. I could imagine riding that dandy
loaner, it would be easy to "forget" where Rivendell is, and be, alas,
unable to return the bike Every time I see a Hunqa I have to remind
myself that even though I think the gray/red paint job is the most
beautiful thing going, I have no need for a Hunqa and wouldn't ride
it.

Quite a bit later the rest of us rode to the top. By that time, I
realized that if I stayed to watch the race, I'd be facing a 75 minute
BART ride and then 30 miles riding at rush hour-- and I wasn't at all
sure I'd be able to avoid the BART rush hour ban, so I decided to just
head home, passing a stream of happy cyclists going up the other way.
At least on North Gate, almost everyone was arriving the proper way,
on bike, though I suppose cars came later.

One mysterious guy was driving from the junction up to the summit with
a bike on his car. I thought to myself, "What's the bike for, dude?"
but the more apposite comment would be "What's the car for, dude?"
Near the bottom, the race officials were spraypainting every pothole,
a time-consuming job on North Gate Road, which does not appear to have
been beautifully maintained lately.

I tried to put my ticket in the BART reader in Walnut Creek, but it
didn't work because I hadn't swiped it yesterday. Oh well. The station
agent fixed it all up. Next time I'll know better.

The Dumbarton Bridge, never a delightful trip, was particularly
challenging today because of a wicked crosswind. Every time a truck
passed, I'd get buffeted. It would have been frightful for a light
rider (but I am not one) on a light bike (but my loaded Atlantis
definitely doesn't qualify). Once over the bridge, I headed home

compared to 9 speed; or even for that matter a 7 speed triple. I moved
away from 7 speed freewheels because they offered a 12 cog & now an 11,
which offers the option for a smaller big ring. A 7 speed triple with
13-28 offers closely spaced gears and a decent low gear. A 9 speed 11-28,
can offer the same range and spacing as a "racing" triple.

10 & 11 speed systems add cost and reduce durability with not much to offer
in return.

Advantage compared to Campagnolo's other standard, 11? Or do you mean
compared to a 9 speed?

Personally, I'm a great fan of the 9 speed 13-30, which happens to have
exactly the same sprockets (in terms of number of teeth, that is) as the
10 speed 12-30, only without the 12T, which has no value for me (unless

2012-05-15 Thread William
On the San Francisco Randonneurs Google Group, there have been several
posts about the Rivet. None of them are blog length narratives, but they
have all been 100% enthusiastically positive. It is my perception that all
of the people who posted there on the SFR page went into it agreeing with
the mission of Rivet, which is splitting the difference between a too-hard
Brooks and too-soft Selle Anatomica. It is also my perception that all of
the people who posted also went into it liking Deb Banks very much
personally, and so all of them really wanted to love their new saddle.
That doesn't prove anything, but it does provide context if you go to that
group and search the archives for reviews. I also like Deb Banks very
much, and will probably buy one of her saddles soon.

2012-05-15 Thread Michael Hechmer
Campy has always made wide range triple deraillers. For many years the
stock offering included three different length cages on the popular rear
deraillers. What baffles me is that they have, apparently discontinued
their excellent compact front derailler, which is a great fd for triples.
In fact it outperforms the SR I have on my tandem. As for 10 speed
cassettes... it's hard to see what advantage they have for recreational &
touring riders.

Looks like the old racing triple. The 30t biggest cog at least
affords a 1:1 low gear, sorta like using a cogset with a 34t with a
compact double. Campy's prices alone put them in a market by
themselves.

[RBW] New triples and wider gearing from Campagnolo

2012-05-15 Thread Aaron Schmidt
At the risk of inciting a religious war, I figured some folks might
want to know that Campagnolo is coming out with some updated triples,
(slightly) wider 10 speed cassette (12-30:
12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27-30), and a long cage derailleur.

http://www.bikerumor.com/2012/05/15/campagnolo-intros-5236-wide-range-cranks-cassettes-performance-triple-cranksets/#more-43869

Does anyone else find this slightly sensible and therefore surprising?

[RBW] FS: Acorn, Brand V, Brooks bags

2012-05-15 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean

Hi folks! Some bags and stuff for sale. All new when I bought 'em. I'm not
terribly efficient at figuring out what I prefer. And now I'm cleaning and
organizing. This is the result.

This is part one. A few other things to come in a few days.

All prices include shipping to the contiguous US. I think these prices are
pretty attractive. I submit my judgment to the market for
confirmation/denial.

Brooks D-shaped Bag

*
http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/7568778/1/bicycle%20cycling/Brooks%20D-shaped%20Bag?h=a8effb
*

- brown leather

- somewhat scuffed on the outside

- internal part is in very good condition

- not-so-gently used

$35

Brand V Seat Bag

*
http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/7568778/1/bicycle%20cycling/Brand%20V%20Seat%20Bag?h=a8effb
*

- used very little

$45

Acorn Large Saddlebag

*
http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/7568778/1/bicycle%20cycling/Acorn%20Large%20Saddlebag?h=a8effb
*

- tan canvas, non-waxed

- slight customization (at my request... by Acorn, not me!)... typically
this style of bag had a slotted patch of leather near the bottom of the
back face for strapping to the seat post; on this bag that leather "patch"
is a "strip" that extends horizontally across much of the width of the bag.
The intent (and it works!) was that this strip would supply a little
stiffening and protection of the canvas if you hang the bag off the side of
a rack like a pannier. The leather is slotted as normal... it's just longer
than a patch.

- older style... 2009, IIRC... leather straps on the side pockets, not
turnbuckles... no "compartment" leading to the seatpost like the current
style

- used several times (just not since stocking up on Sackvilles!)...
light-to-moderate wear, no damage

$80

I have once again embraced PayPal. That is my preferred payment method.

Please reply off-list. First interested, first served.

Yours,

Thomas Lynn Skean

That's opposite my experience, but I'd be interested to hear the
"slow-release" skewers you had success with. I'm not able to get near
the clamping force out of those 5mm bolts that I get from an internal

I think it almost has to be the axle at this point. Many have run QRs

Re: [RBW] Re: s240 up diablo?

2012-05-15 Thread William
Dustin did in fact get there, and he got there before Manny, Tommy, and me.
Anne was also there, and that made 5. I was the only one to leave early,
and I'm back in the office now. It was a delightful S24O.

I BARTed from South Hayward to Macarthur, just in time to see "no bikes" on
the trains heading to Walnut Creek. I texted Manny "am I hosed?". Manny
replied "maybe dude". I didn't get on the first train, but when I saw
three bikes get off the next one, I decided to ignore the 'no bikes'
flashing and take my chances. I think it changes at 5PM, and it was only a
few minutes after 5, so I concluded that my chances were good to not have
to contend with 'Johnny Law'. The train wasn't even crowded, and that got
me out to Walnut Creek.

I met up with Manny and Tommy who were waiting there. Manny was on his
brother's bike, an old Raleigh beater, made famous because it has the
epicly crumpled Honjo fender on it. We started off right away through the
busy streets of Walnut Creek, when "POP" Manny's rear tire blew. It was an
ancient Ruffy Tuffy, nowhere near used up in treadlife, but the sidewall
was long gone. Manny started taking it apart, but I had made up my mind
that the tire was a total lost cause. Manny said "Yeah, my brother said he
didn't trust that tire anymore". #facepalm#. Anyway, I looked at our
location (Ygnacio and N Broadway) and immediately called Riv HQ. It was
5:45, well after closing, but of *course* someone answered, and of *course*it
was Grant, and of
*course *he said come right over. I rode ahead the 2.5 blocks while Manny
and Tommy walked. Grant and I talked a little about what he needed, and
one of the solutions that Grant thought up was "Manny can take his new
bike". I got to see it. It's an orange and cream 650B Hillborne. It's
adorable. I resisted the urge to snap a photo of it. Manny hadn't seen it
(and still hasn't) so I thought that would be unfair of me.

Anyhow, Grant pulled out a tire, and Manny went to fixing it. Perhaps
foolishly, we went Jack Brown, and sure enough it rubbed on that tattered
fender. Grant said "forget it, let's put you on a bike". He grabbed the
48 Hunqapillar, a Saddlesack Large and put us to work. I had a couple
extra zipties so I got the Saddlesack down pretty quickly. Manny started
stuffing his stuff from the porteur rack on his brothers bike into the
Saddlesack. Grant reappeared with a Nitto Mini front and a basket, and we
had that on in another few minutes (beeswaxed threads and all). Grant
enjoyed making a small wrench joke, he handed me a 10mm box wrench for the
centerbolt of the Nitto Mini and said "Here's a 10mm Allen wrench". The *
brand* of the wrench is Allen. Anyway

We were totally loaded up. Manny was pretty mortified with guilt that he
put Grant out, but I was elated that we were able to parlay some good karma
back into a really useful upgrade. More than anything I was grateful that
Manny's tire failed at the absolute perfect location. On the decent of
Diablo this afternoon could have been substantially less optimal. Starting
towards and up Diablo about an hour late, we were pretty sure it would be
dusk-to-dark when we arrived. It was a great ride up the mountain, road
essentially all to ourselves. We saw a pair of EPIC wild turkeys showing
off their tail feathers to the same hen. There was a moronic family of
quails that ran away from us by running up the center of the road in a very
slight serpentine.

We arrived in camp at about 8, which was pretty good time considering how
late we started. Dustin and Anne were there. We got out several stoves
and feasted on veggies and sausages from Dustin, and bacon wrapped hotdogs
from Manny. My pitiful supplies went unopened, but I was happy to help
cook and clean. We made a pretty respectable campfire and hit the hay at
about 11. Manny rocked the hammock.

I got up around 6 and packed up. Manny and Anne got up and we had
coffee/tea/oatmeal before I headed off to work. The rest of them are
presumably watching the race. I did go ahead and summit first. It was a
lovely morning.

I'll post some pictures later this afternoon.

I need some Sugino chainrings, 46 teeth and 34 teeth, 110mm bolt pattern. I
would love to find some NOS ones, the older ones with the stamped name, not
laser etched as they come now. Really clean used condition is fine also.

[RBW] Re: I really do love my dog but...

2012-05-15 Thread John Price
Can relate. A few Christmases ago I bought my wife some expensive
riding breeches (horseback riding that is). They were custom fit, had
a nice leather seat... Anyway, our dear Madonna (Afghan hound too
clever for her own good), opened the sliding closet door, pulled them
down from a hanger, dragged them out of the room and proceeded to rip
up and eat the leather off of them. My wife got maybe two rides out
of them before this happened. Madonna, by the way, thought she had a
special prize and was quite pleased with herself.

Darn "kids" anyway !

Re: [RBW] Re: Slipping QR in horizontal drop out help

2012-05-15 Thread William
OK, well that was a red-herring. You are right that they taper in a
little, but the thing I'm talking about tapers in A LOT and only on the
left side. This 7400 rear hub kind of shows it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dura-Ace-Rear-Tubular-7400-Hub-Nisi-Countache-Rim-8-9-Speed-Excellent-Condition-/120914827269?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c2715d805#ht_500wt_1361

Especially in the second photo. Yours look like the right part on both
sides. The knurls do look kind of flattened out, but not in a way where
I'd say "Yes, that wheel will slip, because of those knurls".

Resume your debugging process. Anything else from my would be a wild
guess. If you asked for my wild guess, I'd try those 'slow-release'
levers. The ones you need an allen wrench to tighten. On chrome rear
dropouts in the past, that's been helpful for me. I think they generate
substantially more clampforce.

The reason the first generation of 130mm spaced dura ace hubs had a
beveled locknut was to aid in wedging your 126mm frameset open to take the
thing. That beveled locknut was on the left side, though, and we're
talking about dura ace cassette hubs from the early 1990s. If you swapped
parts around when you converted this dura ace rear hub to 135mm, then you
actually might have solved your own problem. Specifically if you moved
 the
left side locknut on an early 90's dura ace hub to the driveside, then
 that
very well might be the cause of your slippage. Have that specifically
looked at, preferably by a mechanic older than 30.

[RBW] Re: Group response - Stolen Rivendell Posted on Ebay

2012-05-15 Thread Imladris
In any event, the Seller will have some 'splaining to do. When you
are a re-seller and you don't ask for the provenance of the goods you
are buying, you have a much harder time proving that you didn't "wink,
wink" know that the goods were stolen. Ebay has a particular method
to follow - Taylor should make sure that local law enforcement deals
with Ebay per their policy - the re-seller may not be allowed to sell
on Ebay anymore at a minimum; may face jail time at the maximum; and,
should be forced to, at least, hand the proceeds of the sales (plus
the cost to fully replace) over to Taylor.

Ouch, Zach. I'm not sure how that can happen. Did you hit it with your

the Bruce Gordon with the White pedal on my town - errand - touring bike;
and like them a lot because they pretty much keep my foot settled while
working well with sneakers and easy on & off.
