[RBW] Re: Portland Riv-ish Ride

2012-06-18 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
Was good to see a couple familiar faces (folks previously met through the
list here) on today's "Grant Petersen Style Ride". I imagined a bigger turn
out of Rivs, but 3 Hilsens and an All Rounder in one room is a good time.
As Allan mentioned... the ride leader had a propensity for wacky twists and
turns along the route. It was all fun and good though... even after having
to unclog our drivetrains of grass after a stretch along a grassy/overgrown
levee, and lifting bikes over a fence at one point.

As a kid, my buddies and I spent a lot of our free time at a variety of
undeveloped areas that were sprinkled around our neighborhood. We knew
where there were holes in the fences, which trails were good to ride up and
which made for the fastest descents. We built forts and jumps on land that
must have belonged to someone but we never thought about who that someone
was. Many of those stomping grounds from my childhood have been paved over
and built upon. Even though I never really stopped riding my bike I haven't
really done that same kind of off-the-asphalt urban exploring in a long
time. My "around town" riding is usually transportation oriented and my
recreational rides are usually directed beyond the hidden spaces of my
neighborhood.

The seemingly silly loops and detours of todays ride brought me to nearby
but out of the way places that are practically under my nose and reminded
me that adventure can be just around the corner... if I choose to find it.

Happy Pedaling.

I printed this portion out and read it to my wife, she thought it was

[RBW] Re: Portland Riv-ish Ride

2012-06-18 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Andy: most Saturday mornings over the past 6+ years I lead a ride from my shop,
Hiawatha Cyclery in Minneapolis, that is much like this. The route is
determined on the fly and there are often offroad stretches and various
obstacles to surmount on the way to/from breakfast. At the beginning of each
ride, I usually have only a vague idea, if any, where we're gonna go. We have a
few regulars who are confirmed "roadies", and they sometimes defect when the
deviations-from-boring become too much. Amazingly to me, rides that have the
same (usually dull) route every week seem to be wildly popular, while an
unpredictable but fun ride puts people off (because I can't give them a
straight answer about distance, speed, or other meaningless stats). Anyway, it
sounds like your ride leader and I are on the same page! It's so easy to get
into the rut of commuting everyday and having only a tiny number of
recreational loops to ride. But the permutations of adventure in any major city
(or elsewhere) are endless.

ill take him to a camping spot on the eastside that the Swift

Ride :) Actually with a little luck I'm going to get to do SABRAW
this year. It would be a good year for it since its layover day is
here in Waupun so I'd get two nights at home! Otherwise I'm just
hoping to get to where I can do my loop around the Horicon marsh in
the mornings before work rather than having to wait for the weekends.
It's a gorgeous ride (and great for bird watching) but at 45 miles it
takes just a teeny bit too long to be fed and showered by 8:30.

2012-06-18 Thread SteveD
Beefing up my Atlantis to replace ten-year old parts:

   - Paul Neo Retro/Touring Canti breaks (purchased last night)
   - Honjo Hammered fenders
   - Rear rack change from Tubus Cargo to VO Constructeur
   - Phil bottom bracket
   - VSynergy/Phil Touring hum rear wheel combo

To some, this might be excess or frilly. But I've always wanted a bicycle
that I could call my "dream" bike. At 56, life has become too short. :)

Also, when summer starts in Seattle (as Brian H. pointed out earlier), I'm
going to do a few day tours in the area with the goal of making it up to
Snoqualmie Falls:

   - .5 Lake Washington Loop
   - Full Lake Washington Loop
   - Seattle to Everett Interurban
   - Seattle to Snoqualmie Falls (maybe follow the Seattle Century route)

Aww darn, I just got off the phone with Rivendell to verify my size (56 was

Hopefully another late run Saluki (I like the kickstand plate) or AHH come

color is School Bus Yellow but it looks more to me like Creamsicle
Orange. Frame obviously has room for Hetres and 52mm VO Zeppelins
Serial number for those that keept track of those things is SA 226. It
has all the rack fittings of the new Hilsens on the midfork and mid
seat stay, one eyelet on the front fork, two on the back dropout. Has
a kickstandplate, and cast in ridges on bottom bracket. A really top
shelf example of a bike that is used but not abused or ridden hard. No
damage, usual paint loss on eyelets, small scuff on seattube decal,
overall in excellent shape, just begging to be ridden way more than I
have been. Will include dia compe centerpulls and kookstop pads if
buyer wants them. Bike really is beautiful and I have already gotten
compliments on the few rides I have squeezed in. Looking for $1050
shipped to lower 48, paypal only. Link to Flikr page, I can take more
 pics if buyer wants.

[RBW] WTT front racks. My Nitto Mini Front for your Mark's Rack

2012-06-18 Thread William
I have an extra Nitto Mini Front rack. I'm sure I'll get around to using
it eventually, but my need right now is a front rack for a bike with
caliper brakes. So, I'd like to trade my lightly used Nitto Mini Front for
a Mark's Rack in similar condition. Local hand-off preferred (East Bay,
from Fremont to Richmond) so we don't have to pay shipping. Let me know if
you have one and want to swap.

[RBW] tires and bars on the Hillbornes

2012-06-18 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Having decided that I do in fact prefer the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser to the Kenda
Rain V-Cut tires, I put them on both bikes. They feel great. And there's plenty
of room inside the fenders. And they look... well... interesting. I like it,
anyway.

http://db.tt/2vi8YLQG
http://db.tt/2n964325
http://db.tt/eYhx7khQ

Green has Bosco with wood grips and stem-mounted shifters. Orange has Albatross
with cork grips and indexed bar-ends-on-thumbies.

So far, Albatross still edges out Bosco in overall comfort and looks. It's
close.

The bikes ride virtually identically, of course. Just wonderful.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] What are your favorite blogs?

2012-06-18 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Facebook and other "social networking" sites have led me away from blogs,
which I used to read voraciously in ye olde days. I'm making a conscious
effort to read more blogs. Current favorites are:
http://whileoutriding.com/
http://www.pushingthepedals.com/
http://bikenoir.blogspot.com/

I prefer blogs about touring/bikepacking/adventure more than ones about
equipment fetishism (of course, that's usually a neat sideline, whether the
fetish is bikes, camping gear, or cameras). Good/unique writing, photos,
and perspective are necessary. I can only handle a small number of "artful"
photos of handlebar twine or Phil hubs or fixed-gear chainline, but I'll
put up with it if there are enough words and photos from cool rides/tours.

What are you folks reading?

[RBW] Re: What are your favorite blogs?

2012-06-18 Thread Michael Hechmer
Jim, those really do look like interesting sites but, I turn 68 this
year and increasingly feel like life is too short to give much to Facebook
(zero) or blogs. Try this post again, around jan 7th.

On a semi related topic, my wife and I ended a brief argument by agreeing
that we are working too hard and need a vacation. I was thinking Minnesota
bike trails, but am open to suggestions. Caveats: we'll be self supported
on a tandem for inn to inn touring, and the stoker is vertically
challenged.

Michael,
Westford, Vt
where my typical 2 hour ride today had 1499 feet of climbing.

[RBW] Re: Bosco Bars

2012-06-18 Thread Marc Irwin
I had a problem with it under certain conditions, like if I got clumsy and
leaned all my weight on the ends of the bars. I wasn't too surprised.
The sweep on those bars creates a lot of leverage. I have retightened them
a couple of times. The last time, I increased the leverage of the Allen
wrench by using a steel tube over it to give me 2 feet of additional
leverage. I was able to ease another 1/2 turn to the bolt beyond what I
could by hand. I doubt that I will have any other problem. Like I said, I
wasn't surprised those bars create a lot of leverage and simply need to be
tightened more than others. The comfort is well worth the extra turn of a
wrench. If I was worried about it, I would go to the Bullmoose.

[RBW] WTT my Noodle 42cm for 44cm (sf bay)

2012-06-18 Thread JL
Hell all,

I have a very good condition set of Nitto Noodles in 42cm that I don't
need, Does anyone in the SF bay have a set of 44cm bars (noodles or
similar 26.0 clamp flat ramp bars) they want to trade for my smaller set?

Thanks
JL

I get tired of "the wonders of Colombian racers" in CI. But like it when he
throws in heavy metal!

Rob, that site is great. I forgot about it!
