Re: [RBW] Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-08 Thread jimD
I was finishing high school and entering college during the years that the
pivotal struggles for civil rights were occurring.

I recently read Taylor Branch's Pillar of Fire. The book is encyclopedic in
scope as the author depicts that struggle.
For me, 'Pillar of Fire' shifted my understanding of the struggle for civil
rights. The politicians, including LBJ, were driven
to pass the legislation due to the heroic efforts of the many people who put
life and limb on the line in pursuing rights that
today we take for granted.

I learned that the Civil Rights Act was accomplished through the bravery and
sacrifice of many unsung dedicated citizens.
The politicians followed, rather than lead that struggle.

I rode my bicycle to the polls, as well, but the only reason I posted on
this thread was because of the irrational opinions and fears I saw voiced
about those who may have voted differently. As long as this great
disparity remains, the next four years will be four more years of gridlock.

I absolutely believe that all adult americans should have the ability to

regardless of their race, gender, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

I believe anyone pushing to withhold those rights from folks in our

I absolutely believe that all women should have control over their own

2012-11-08 Thread Steven Frederick
Sorry, that was a bit glib. I feel a little hesitant to continue this
thread in a political direction. The point I hope to make is that if
there are some individuals who believe absolutely that A is more
important than B, and some other individuals who believe just as
fervently that B is more important than A, then it is the
responsibility of those elected by all of us to reach a consensus that
both extremes will find more or less equally unsatisfactory, and that
everyone that falls in between the two extremes of the A/B question
can live with.

Speaking only in the most general terms of course.

I feel strongly about some of issues you mention, and less strongly
about others. I also have biases and opinions about things you didn't
mention, but that are also very much points of contention these days.
But I'll keep all that to myself due to the off-topical nature of this
discussion.

If you are expecting snow in your winter, you might consider derailleur
system. On rare occasion they do need a little nudge because frozen in
place and you do have to keep an eye on the drive train, but you also need
those low ratios if getting bogged down in the white stuff. If your winter
is mostly rain, single speed would be great. I have Suntour XC hubs with
6 speed freewheel and it works great for commuting (there's a foot of snow
outside my window as I write this). No front derailleur, but two rings so I
can manual shift. If I didn't already have the parts and was buying new,
I'd just go with a cassette hub. Gives more options with gearing.

Hey lost track of this conversation at work today. I hope that Ron does not
think that I assume everyone who voted for Romney is a bigot or racist.
Everyone who voted for Romney voted for the wrong guy, in my opinion but I
am sure they had thier own reasons and I would not assume any blanket
reason. Looking back at the comments I cant see anyone who wants to force
thier opinion on anyone else or make anyone else believe something they
dont. I dont feel we need someone on here defending us from anyone elses
comments though, seems to me we are all adults and would not be swayed by
what someone wrote on some message board. Oh and BTW Federal Government

Federal Constitution after all.

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-08 Thread Rick
I voted early, but rode the Atlantis to work on election day in a
deluge here in the ATL. Even had on the rainpants, and it was pouring
enough to still soak through the leather uppers of my boots. (Should
have bought those splats . . . ) I figured if I didn't ride, it would
be bad luck. Then I rode home in moderately less nasty weather, and
made some fresh bread for the kids to continue the karma.
Surprisingly, it worked.

[RBW] FS: Tektro CR720 cantilever brakes

2012-11-08 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have a surprisingly large number of these, new but no retail packaging.
$15 each shipped (so $30 for a bikesworth). They're black. Come to think of
it, the first brakes I ever bought from Riv (in 2004 for my Atlantis) were
black Shimano cantilevers, so black is not altogether non-rivish.

[RBW] OT ? Building a Rivendell-inspired Surly Long Haul Trucker

2012-11-08 Thread Joss Winn
I recently built up a Surly Long Haul Trucker entirely from advice on
Rivendell's website. The crank and bars were also bought from Rivendell,
but there's no denying it's a Surly :-)

Anyway, hopefully it's not too off-topic and members of this list will
enjoy the photos and maybe read about the build, too. I go on a bit.

http://josswinn.org/bikes/lht.html

Someone on the Surly LHT mailing list said that they didn't think there
would be a LHT without Grant Peterson. I have a feeling they might be
right. My bike certainly woudn't have come together in quite this way
without his influence.

Comments and advice on the build, most welcome.

Cheers
Joss

Re: [RBW] OT ? Building a Rivendell-inspired Surly Long Haul Trucker

2012-11-08 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Joss: very nice build (well, I personally don't like big front baskets
except on cargo bikes, but that apart, very nice). The colors look good as
far as my semi-color-blind eyes can tell; the purple is unusual but looks
very nice against the darker background of the frame. What is the frame's
color, exactly? And just a thought: might the very nice looking cloth tape
chainstay protector (excellent whipping job, btw) not hold water where you
don't want it to?

That must be a XX-36 cassette. Am trying to decide if 2 addtional teeth are
worth the effort and cost for my Fargo, but if I had one in my hand, it
would go on.

Finally, as proud as I am of my new Sackville, nothing, but **nothing** in
the way of bike luggage looks as good as a fresh, green Carradice!

How does it ride? I hear that the LHT is a pretty beefy frame, so how does
it compare with your other, presumably lighter gauge, bikes?

[RBW] Re: Friend of Rivendell Maynard Hershon in LA Times

2012-11-08 Thread Jim Cloud
The most intense level of bicycling activity in Tucson declines
considerably after the El Tour de Tucson (always on the Saturday
before Thanksgiving). Many of the snowbirds are themselves cyclists
and they're active right up until they return to their home roosts
around late April!

One of the better books, recently published, that shows some of the
routes in the immediate Tucson area is Desert Journeys, written by
Jerry Rosen (published by the author - http://www.jrphoto.org/journeys.htm
). It's nicely illustrated with photographs on a glossy stock paper.
The most active local cycling club (for non-racers) is GABA (
http://www.bikegaba.org/ ) they have a variety of rides in the area,
including some with support.

One of my favorite day rides is from Amado (south of Green Valley) to
Arivaca. A ride that includes some climbs and roller coasters and
ends up in Arivaca, where there is a small market and some decent
restaurants. Return is back to Amado (46 miles total with the
opportunity for some side rides in the area). I first heard about
this ride from Colin Laing, the British custom framebuilder (now
retired) who had apprenticed with the Taylor Brothers. He once had a
shop in Tucson and built a triplet for my family with a kiddie-crank
conversion in the center position.

[RBW] Anyone tried Mark's rack attaced to dropout eyelets?

2012-11-08 Thread JL
Hello all,

I am trying to figure out a basket mounting solution for a bike of mine.
Has anyone tried a Mark's rack attached to fork dropout eyelets?

The bike in question is a CB0 that I have been setting up for a short
time. I want to mount the Mark's with clamps to the top of my unicrown
fork
and with the long stays the riv sells to the top eyelets on my fork. Has
anyone tried something like that? Maybe mounted an MR with a
four point attachment to the threaded bosses on the Bomba fork crown plus
the dropout eyelets? My concern is that the long stays with bend easily or
be in the way on the front of a bus rack.
I like the Mark's rack because it is short unlike the R14 which has a
similar setup.

Thanks JL

I don't have a Mark's rack yet but I did recently acquire a nitto big front
rack for the same bike - but the fit wont work. It is up for sale.
Ask me off list about the big front rack.
