[RBW] Re: Sugino crank question

2013-03-04 Thread Michael Hechmer
Interesting, although I would guess that's not how you feel about it. I
have never had this happen. My problem has been between the rings and I
now see that what I need are the 1.2 mm spacers. I am putting this on a
bike I hope to sell, and removing a DaVinci crank, which I like very much.
I am running a Phil Wood 108 on an Ebisu AllPurpose and hope the Sugino
crank doesn't create that problem. I run the Sugino on a Trek 620 (also up
for sale) with a 110 bb. No problem, but still need the shims on that
crank too.

Precisely. At big auto shows inevitably there is a Lamborghini or other
such terribly expensive and impractical machine lurking among the Malibus
and Accords drawing oohs and ahhs from people who would never buy such an
exotic even if they had the spare cash. Bike show need not be any
different.

Can't speak to the bargain varieties, but the Schmidt SON Dynohub has no
noticeable drag when not on. Even when the lights are on - least ways LED
lights - its drag is not noticeable. And this from someone who has bikes
with Maxicar and highly custom Campy front hubs.

Welcome aboard!

On Saturday I took a friend and his wife to RBW and after doing some test

patient until they arrive, so I gave then Grant's book as a present.

Enjoy your Sam!

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Simpleone 62cm frameset (located in Ontario, Canada)

2013-03-04 Thread Matt
Hello RivBunchers,

I purchased this frameset from Rivendell exactly a year ago, then built it
and rode it some over the summer. I have decided to go with a Sam Hillborne
for its longer top tube and more lax seat tube angle, so am selling the
Simpleone one to make room.

I have taken good care of it and treated it with RustCheck before build-up.
Geometry is available here: http://tinyurl.com/cj7k88j
Rivbike infopage here: http://www.rivbike.com/SimpleOne-p/f-simpleone.htm

Asking $725 + Shipping.

I will post pictures shortly and have some extra parts available if the
buyer needs something for the build.

Please message me with questions, trades, offers, etc.

Thank you and have a good ride,

Matt

[RBW] Work Shop Advice II

2013-03-04 Thread GeorgeS
My new work shop is coming along and the contractor has started asking me
about the interior. I have a Park bike stand that I use all the time and
that I intend to use in the new shop. I find that stand inadequate for
some jobs, particularly those requiring the application of significant
torque (removing fixed cup, the occasional recalcitrant seat post, etc.)
So, I purchased a Park wall-mounted bike clamp. It came with no
instructions. Anyone have any advice on how far off the floor to install
this thing? 700c wheels touching the floor? A couple of inches of
additional space? Higher? This clamp has to be screwed into a stud, so I
don't want to get it right the first time if possible. Thanks.

Hey George,

While I do not have the wall mount (mine's going on a very heavy work
bench; bench-top height of 32"), I would recommend mounting it at the same
height you find most comfortable with your stand-alone bike stand.

And, as Patrick wrote, pics when the shop is done :)

[RBW] FS SP PV-8 Wheel

2013-03-04 Thread Kelly
I have a PV-8 dyno on a Velocity Deep V Black Rim for sale.140.00 and
I'll pay shipping continental US. If you pick it up it's 130.00

Why am I selling: Because I don't want to cut the spokes out of a
perfectly good wheel and hang a really nice rim on the wall never to be
used again.
I found I liked the looks of boxed rims better than the deep V ... so
selling for the cost of a new hub.

Here is some photos..

Sorry, but I can't help you. I have a right side XD2 that is available,

Re: [RBW] Re: OT - Family Biking

2013-03-04 Thread rb
I'd like to put a word in for having the kid(s) on the back of a tandem,
either a regular sized one with a "kid back" or a bike friday (or MTB type
tandem with a lower top tube in back, or if you have the $$ or get lucky on
the internet, one of the amazing "periscope" tandems that are made for this
very purpose.

Like one of the other posters, I live in a hilly rural area; and I have
been pulling my kid on a first a kidback, and tandem since he was 3 1/2;
and he's been putting out reasonable pedal power since (from 10 months - 3,
he was in a trailer). The added power from the child is very helpful
sometimes, esp as he got heavier (now at 80 lbs and 10 years old, a
sprinter esp on hills), but most importantly - early lesson in "there is no
free ride" - even those few times where I said stop pedalling and I'll pull
you up the hill, or we'll walk, or whatever, he saw the relationship
between effort and benefit. We've all seen kids who expect everythng to be
handed to them...how are they going to understand that they have
responsibility if after being hauled around until they're 7 or 8, THEN they
have to start riding up those hills?

Whichever tandem we've used (and here's a link to some of them), they've
all been great for carrying lots of stuff besides the kid; with cheap
panniers, or even better, the wald folding grocery racks / big rack +
basket up front, I've hauled 60 lbs of stuff, plus kid, no problem,
although we do sometimes walk up hills (there are a lot of steep grades
round here (western mass / & Columbia County NY). We try to ride
everywhere within 10 miles.

Blakely installed fenders on his Trek and kept them year 'round; he
found he crossed enough irrigation runoff puddles to make them worth
while. But then, at 10K+ miles on a normal year, you'd probably cross
a lot of everything.

I kept Honjos on the commuter Riv until they broke and I didn't bother
to replace them.

[RBW] Re: Work Shop Advice II

IIRC, there are a few bench mounted Park stands here -
http://cyclofiend.com/shop/

Others have made good salient points for mounting height. If it's
primarily to be the "high torque" resource, I'd try to approximate the
position where you "bear down" - for me, that's a bit lower than my regular
preferred workstand height.

When removing the fixed cup, I like to have the bb low (i.e., wheels
on the ground). In this position I can bend to reach the wrench
handle, which allows me to utilize more back strength than if the bb
is at waist height. Kind of like the difference between a dead lift

Hmm, interesting quesiton, i've never considered this, but now that you
bring it up, not sure about the right answer. my first inclination would
be to have it high enough for standing height working of the bike, but high
torque situations would need it a little lower.

you mentioned a stud, how are you going to get it away from the wall?

Re: [RBW] Latest BLUG post (2/28)

2013-03-04 Thread Bryan
Fenders in LA with me, too, at least on my commuter. The streets here are
always filled with run-off from the lawn sprinklers of the rich and
clueless, and who knows what else. I don't want that stuff splashing on my
feet and legs. Every once in a while, it rains here, and when it does the
streets flood almost instantly.

I grab my Quickbeam almost every day for my commute. I don't want to think
about shifting when I'm riding to work. I just want to pedal. I like the
reliability and the fact that I'm always in gear.

George,
Glad to hear your bike workshop is in progress.

Here's pics of mine:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/skvidal/sets/72157629538063710/

I will say that I contemplated the wall/table-mount park clamp. I
eventually settled on just using the one I had b/c I wanted to move the
stand around to make it useful for hoisting up the tandems.

I've honestly considered doing a stand like Ezra Caldwell (Fastboy cycles')
workstand:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fastboy/343233482/

The surface-mount workstand on a big poured-concrete base on wheels.

it's absolutely GENIUS imo. Heavy enough to counterbalance a bike, easy
enough to roll around.

2013-03-04 Thread Eric Norris
It's actually not that flat. The ride organizer lists the climbing at about
9,000 feet, including the (long) climbs to Salisbury and Jubilee passes. Most
of the rest of the ride is either slightly uphill or downhill, the result of
the road undulating over the alluvial fans that extend from the mountains into
the valley. Not the toughest double, but certainly not easy.

[RBW] Columbia Slough

2013-03-04 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
The Columbia Slough is a waterway that parallels the Columbia River in
north Portland, OR. It's not really that spectacular as far as waterways
go, but it's largely contained by dikes that have an access road along the
top. Our plan was to ride to the NW corner of PDX and follow the Slough
east as far as we could. We ran shy on time before we ran out of dike to
explore, so I imagine we'll be back another day.

The slough itself isn't very photogenic so no pics of the muddy waterway,
but there are enough from the rest of the ride to prove we were went
somewhere...

[RBW] interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and "innovation"

2013-03-04 Thread Aaron Thomas
In light of Grant's recent Blug post, which mentioned the influence of Tom
Ritchey, this interview just published on Road Bike Review may be of
interest to the list:

http://reviews.roadbikereview.com/2013-predictions-tom-ritchey-of-ritchey-design

I particularly liked his quip that the bike industry, which "innovated"
away from clearances to run larger tires, is in some ways "'innovating'
back to where we started."

[RBW] Re: interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and "innovation"

2013-03-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks for sharing. A little over a year ago, when I began looking at what
bike to get, I'd been running barefoot or in moccasins for nearly three
years. The shoe industry is doing much the same thing -- discovering the
value of the simpler way of doing things and the price we unwittingly pay
for things that get in the way of proper function (of the pneumatic tire,
the foot, whatever).

That is a huge part of what attracted me to Grant and Riv. -- so much so I
bought a bike I'd never ridden, after not riding a bike for over a decade
(I had a Greenspeed trike for a few years, but that only worked on paved
roads and was pretty limiting).

We need more retrogrouches! Grin

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and "innovation"

2013-03-04 Thread Tim McNamara
I have a Ritchey Road "Classic" fillet brazed bike. I bought it used after a
decade or more on Italian road bike, Reparto Corsa Bianchis and the like. The
Ritchey handles and responds better than any of those bikes. Over the years I
have re-simplified it with down tube shifters, single pivot brakes, friction
shifting, etc. It weighs less than it did with Campy Chorus Ergo and, with 25s
instead of 19-23 wide tires, it's a versatile all-day-long bike.

The problem comes when going for a ride... Ritchey? All-Rounder? The 3 speed
I designed and built? Such terrible choices to have to make! I can only ride
one a a time.

Ritchey's building philosophy came in part from years of Jobst rides in the
Santa Cruz mountains on fire roads, long climbs, hike-a-bikes, etc. Simple and
strong gets you there and back again more often than not. I think that there
is a slideshow video on YouTube from a number of years of those rides posted by
Ray Hosler.

Aaron thanks for a great read. I've always liked Tom Richey. I also agree
with his thought that bikes are coming full circle back to wider tires and
lots of innovations are just trends. Just recently mountain bikes were
going with 29er's now I hear their going with 650b wheels? Pretty soon
we'll be back to 26" wheels.

Well actually the saddlebag is a Barley. It's not an iPhone, it's a Garmin

was too slanted and couldn't read it in certain light.

Re: [RBW] interview with Ritchey on steel, gravel, wide tires and "innovation"

2013-03-04 Thread Mike Schiller
Hugh, the very 1st MTB's that Ritchey made were orignally
650b. http://www.flickr.com/photos/slonie/8008516231/in/faves-37347002@N05/
So we've come full circle.
Off topic... but 29ers are here to stay for taller riders. The big wheels
roll much better off road. 26" MTBs will gradually fade away except for
kids's bikes.

[RBW] Re: anyone have experience with the Velo Orange 50.4 BCD Grand Cru crank?

2013-03-04 Thread Jon Doyle
I have the Velo Orange 50.4 crank (first gen) on a Rawland rSogn. I've got
15,000km on it and the non-anodized aluminum arms look nasty from my
neglect. Functionally it's a great and low-cost way to try the wide-range
gearing (cheaper than Sugino OXs).
You could probably use the 118 BB on your RB-1 with no issues; my mtbish
frame required a 122.5 spindle.

[RBW] Re: anyone have experience with the Velo Orange 50.4 BCD Grand Cru crank?

2013-03-04 Thread whiskeyding
I used a first gen for about 6 months; it got replaced by a White
Industries VBC. Setting up the front derailleur was a real pain (super
tight crankarm clearances), and the stock chainrings had quite a bit of
runout. They also wore very quickly. Replacing the stock rings with TA
rings helped the runout problem, but it was not a cheap switch. I seem to
recall a stripping issue with the stock chainring bolts, but I may be
misremembering.

Looking at the VO website, they claim to have addressed most of these
issues.

I love my 44/28 (it lets me run a lightweight Dura-Ace 9sp 12-25 in the
rear), and the White crank was the best option at the time. If the Rene
Herse crank had been available, I probably would have bought that instead.
The White was about $160 dollars more than the Grand Cru, but after all the
frustrations I had with getting the VO crank set up properly, I considered
it money well spent.

If you do decide to get a 2nd gen Grand Cru crank, let us know how it goes!
