I tried and only really could get to seven; any more than than and I'm
really just adding bikes for the sake of it, not really out of desire.

1. Quickbeam fixed gear commuter, done.
2. Allrounder/Touring/Rough stuff, currently being accomplished very well
with an Long Haul Trucker, but maybe by an Appaloosa in the future?
3. Go fast gearie road bike, steel frame, 57mm brakes for fatter tires or
fenders, currently being accomplished by my Casseroll.
4. Matt Chester Ti fixed gear road-ish allrounder, super light and stripped
down, probably flared drop bars. I share Philip's admiration for Matt's
work. He's also a super nice guy, unfortunately I don't think he's taking
orders for frames currently.
5. Brompton. 'nuff said. M6L-X in raw lacquer.
6. Bullitt front loader cargo bike.
7. My old touring bike, with headtube fixed, converted to Xtracycle.

or Ira Ryan http://www.iraryancycles.com/bikes/cross/. A pretty track
bike would fill the same (nonexistent) void.
 9. Custom Rivendell http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-custom.htm fixed

Boscos http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/hb11.htm, just a couple gears.

Re: [RBW] WTB or Trade: Nitto Mini Front Rack 32F

2013-07-07 Thread James Warren
Can't you still mount a Mark's rack on the fork that uses cantis? You need a
bolt of some kind to go through the hole in the crown so it can hold the
mounting bracket of the Mark's rack.

Rivendell used to sell these bolts that fit nicely in crown holes and when
installed, a couple inches of bolt would stick out pointing forward from the
fork. Grant called these paralysis preventers, because if the main brake cable
in front ever failed, the PP would prevent the straddle cable from coming down
and abruptly stopping the front wheel at high speed. The company that made it
was Selcof.

[RBW] Rivendell sighting what are the odds?

2013-07-07 Thread hsmitham
Went out for a short ramble South of Del Mar through Torrey Pines reserve
and just happened to run into another Hilsen on my way back, Curtis and his
67cm Homer. I recall Curtis joining the bunch inquiring about San Diego
mixed terrain rides as he had just acquired his Rivendell. What are the
odds in SD county dominated with carbon that we'd run into each other? I'm
not a mathematician but it seems the odds would be pretty high. Then again
as the Rivendell anomaly amplifies the odds will be more favorable of such
serendipitous meetings. It was a nice end to a ride.

Pictures prove that it happened.

[RBW] Re: Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?

2013-07-07 Thread Evan Spacht
No.

I recently made the swich to Albatross bars from Noodles. For me this was
a big improvement in the comfort category; meaning better endurance, and
therefore, going a more consistant pace. Not only did the Albatross improve
steering and leverage, but the rounded part up front is perfect for
agressive climbing, IMO.

[RBW] Re: Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?

2013-07-07 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
My commute takes exactly the same time (50-55 minutes) an Albas as it did
when I was on drops. At almost an hour for ~12 miles, my speed is
determined more by how hit traffic lights and similar obstacles than by
actual biking speed.

The biggest changes to my commuting times were:
1. When I traded in my old (steel Gary Fisher) MTB on slicks for a Sam -
time reduced to my old office from 37 minutes to 32
2. Changing from VO touring pedals to Grip Kings cut another 2-3 minutes
off.

presale notice - VO Touring pedals, 46cm Noodles and a few other things
will be available for sale when I go to NH later this month. I'll be in
Baltimore too if that helps.

2) Betty Foy with albas and racks for commuting
3) Quickbeam for quick errands (carradice bag)
4) Bridgesone RB-1 to ride with my roadie friends
5) centurion Lemans with moustache, a sentimental favorite cuz it's my first
non mountain bike

Bikes I used to have and wouldn't mind having again
6) Catrike Speed recumbent trike which is just fun to ride
7) Cannondale F600 hardtail mountain bike which fit me just right for mountain
biking

Bikes I wouldn't mind having:
8) Brompton folding bike
9) Hunqapillar (grey and kidney bean) cuz I love the head badge and colors
(hubby has one)
10) Roadeo (but then I wouldn't need the RB-1)

2013-07-07 Thread Liesl
Fav grip position on Boscos: all of 'em! With the ergons , it is
impossibly nice sitting upright. I used the short ones designed for twist
shifters; they sit perfectly abaft the brake levers and leave plenty of
room 'fore. I will say, though, that I have wee hands. Ditto next on the
vulcan grip ad the brackets on the shimano are nice and curved so very
comfy in the straddle position. Lots of riding on the top bend for uphill
riding either standing or sitting. I grab them there when taking off from
a start.

Note to Patrick: the custom is slated to arrive in the fall, so no updates
at this time. rest assured, there will be when it's near! It asn't
changed, though, from the world's smallest appaloosa.

[RBW] Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?

2013-07-07 Thread Kelly
Albatross bars are slower than drops if same power is applied and you are in
the drops.
The aero dynamics going from brake hoods down to drops is over one mph
advantage by itself.
Of course you could mount your albas low enough and run a stem long enough to
achieve the same aerodynamics then they would be equal. :).

So wider, higher, and a more upright riding position guarantee they will be
slower.
Based on equal power imput.

Re: [RBW] Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?

Note that bending at the hips more also brings into play additional
muscles; I can feel a slight increase in power, independently of aero (I
feel it even a lowish speeds) when I go into the hooks or shove back and
grab the hoods or ramps with bent elbows. So there are two speed benefits
for a more-bent-over position, ceteris paribus of course.

Re: [RBW] Re: poll: what do you have on your rack (s)?

On SimpleOne either a Caradice Barley or Nelson Longflap with Nitto grip.
Sam Hillborne has either a Sackville Small or Medium depending on mood.
Most of the time small. Until the clanking of the buckle on the rack

Re: [RBW] Re: 10 Bikes - could you do it?

2013-07-07 Thread RJM
I will write something up when I finally get the Roadeo built up. I've had
a few other bike projects to do for our kid and his friend first, but once
I get the cash for some wheels I should be good to go.

I don't think I can do 10 bikes for me, but in my family I think I could
now that I have had a chance to ponder it. Here is what I would do.
1 - full on touring bike: Rivendell Atlantis with the stock Noodle build
with added front and rear racks and fenders.
2. - Roadeo go fast with light wheels and a modern groupset. New Dura Ace
would be cool. Mark bars and I would keep it quill stem just because it is
sexier.
3. - Wife's road bike which is now a Mustached bar Nishiki International
but I would think about Soma San Marcos for her.
4. - Kid's road bike which is now a Cannondale Synapse w/ Tiagra
5. - Wife's mup bike which would be a Betty Foy with basic Albatross build
6. - Mountain bike for me. I would really dig a Bombadil w/ Nitto Bullmoose
bars or a Rivendell custom mountain mixte. Either way it would be totally
cool.
7. - Kid's mountain bike. Something modern from Trek. Hardtail w/ front
shock fork, probably 29er.
8. - Yvez Gomez for me. Albatross bars and set up for commuting with a
front basket and rear foldable double basket.
9. - My Sam Hillborne. Noodles, barend silver shifters, 650b dyad laced to
phil rivy 7 speed freewheel, Pari Moto or Hetres. Handlebar bag and small
saddlebag.
10. - Modern fast carbon road bike like the Trek Domane. I rode one and
really liked it. I would be cool to have one and compare it to the Roadeo.

I'll be interested in hearing how the Roadeo feels compared to the Sam. (I

I have been doing it with one bike for a couple of years now, a Sam
Hillborne with noodles, silver shifter bar ends and a 7 speed freewheel in
the back laced to 650 b wheels. I realized for the riding I do I needed
another bike, namely a Roadeo go fast bike. I ordered a frameset and have
been putting together the parts to build it since. It will do me just fine.
The Sam will become the full on touring machine and I will permanently
affix racks and bags with a front basket and possibly change to Albatross
bars on it. The Roadeo for fast club stuff, the Hillborne for most
 everything else.

If I get the cash for another (3rd.) bike it will be some sort of
mountain bike. What I would really like is a custom mountain mixte from
Rivendell that takes wider tires, like 2.5s, would be cool in 650b.

[RBW] fs: Rivendell Rambouillet - 58cm blue

2013-07-07 Thread Eric
So I recently bought this beautiful Rambouillet from member Steve. And
after a funny receiving it a funny thing happened. I took the frame down to
the basement placed next to the other bikes, other frames, other wheelsets
and other bike related stuff. Then I took a good look at everything, I
assessed the stable and came to the realization that this is too much!
and I can't possibly have every Rivendell ever existed (I own a Saluki
Atlantis as well) and that (fill in the number) of bikes is quite enough.

As a result this realization I have decided to sell this beauty!

Rivendell Rambouillet - frame/fork/headset - 58cm

Geometry can be found here: http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html

Nice condition but with a few knicks in the paint. No dings/dents.
