[RBW] Bottom Bracket Changes

You could try some thin brass shim stock (0.001). I'd only try this if you
can't afford new cranks or a different BB.

[RBW] A visit to Rivendell world headquarters

2013-07-18 Thread Curtis McKenzie
Drove up from San Diego to Walnut Creek and stopped in at Rivendell. Kevin
helped me with some ideas to carry stuff on the bike. Ended up spending less
than I had in mind. What a wonderful experience.

We are know ready for twelve days of bike camping and exploration from San
Francisco to points north. Tonight is at a friends house. Wednesday will be
spent about 30 miles away at another friends house. We will be riding with
camping gear for the following days.

Ride safe,

Curtis

[RBW] Re: Bottom Bracket Changes

Thanks To all. Many good points I hadn't considered. Of course I'm

A shiny new crank is on its way.

Thanks again, ride safe

ride anyway; ref to earlier post regarding whether or not you could live
 with just one bike.
To get to the point, the original bottom bracket I installed in the
Atlantis has finally given up. I don't know how many miles, I gave up
odometers when I built this bike, but it has served me well over the last
few years. I ordered a replacement, the original was the Tange cartridge
that Riv used to carry, and I received a Shimano BB-UN55. I've always had
good luck with Shimano so I replaced the Tange. I installed my cranks,
Sugino XD2, on the new Shimano spindle and I have found that I cannot get
the cranks to seat well. Plenty of the creaking and snapping that I've
always associated with square taper cranks not fully installed or seated
 well.
My question is this, does anyone know of any differences between the taper
of the Shimano and Tange spindles? I always thought a JIS taper is a JIS
taper and just about any JIS crank would fit well on any JIS spindle. The
cranks are not new, in fact may be pretty worn, so I thought this may have
been the cause. Do square taper cranks take a set with respect to the
spindle they are installed on originally and then possibly not seat well
on a different spindle when re-installed?

Thanks for any insight, ride safely

Re: [RBW] Phone mount

2013-07-18 Thread James Chang
Hi Joe,

Topeak makes a metal phone mount that can be bolted directly on to the
stem. You can then buy a Topeak phone sleeve thingy that's appropriate for
your phone. I've seen it for the iPhone but not sure about the HTC EVO. A
very solid setup.

[RBW] FS: Rivish bike for kid or 5' tall person in Seattle

Put my wife's '87 Specialized Hard Rock on CL. It's not lugged, but it is
steel.

No real interest for 2 weeks. Seems a shame to break it up for parts. I'd
like to see a kid get this ideally.

24 wheels with Schwalbe Marathons. Upgraded to '87 Deore XT (best year
for XT IMHO) on almost every part.

[RBW] Re: Century ride training for the un-racer?

2013-07-18 Thread Bitonal
Hi, I am new to this forum. I think the advice here is right on but just to
get started here-

I recall my first century ride pretty well even though it was over 20 years
ago. The ride was Bellingham, WA. to Seattle and it is quite hilly in this
neck of the woods. I understand this ride to be lots more hill than Seattle
to Portland which I have not done. I had ridden a few 35 mile rides before
attempting this longer ride. This gal I knew was a racer and she invited me
to join her so I couldn't refuse! The challenge was abated by watching her
climb out of the saddle on hills :)

I would list these as considerations: saddle comfort (take at least a
couple of longer rides to be sure you are comfortable in your saddle
If you are commuting or doing training rides, be sure if you can't simulate
the poor wind in face condition maybe seek out some hills if you can.

This assumes your upper body is also prepared- neck shoulders , lower
back
Also resist the urge to stop for Mexican while doing this...save it for the
destination.

Another unexpected issue for me on the same ride a few years later was that
it temps were high and I sweat a lot. Sweat began to pour from my helmet
into my eyes...so a bandanna would have been invaluable.

[RBW] unique hand made recycled leather saddles

2013-07-18 Thread Rudi Mayr
These are old leather saddles that came to me with ruined leather. I have
replaced the leather. They range from one of the first I did (late 2011),
to the most recent (which I did earlier this month). They are shown in
their present condition; I expect the leather to darken with time and use.
I cannot offer a money-back-no-questions-asked guarantee, but will stand by
my work and make repairs if necessary. Incidentally, I would be happy to
take your old saddle(s), with ruined leather, in trade.

The first three saddles are all made from sole bend leather, the thickest
stuff you can get. It is thick and hard. I have ridden thousands of miles
on saddles made from this leather. It holds up well, but some riders have
joked RHM must stand for 'rock hard material' rather than my initials. I'm
not exaggerating, and I'm not making any excuses; I think a leather saddle *
should* be hard. If you disagree, these probably aren't for you.

I believe this link will take you to photos. I have labeled them in the
'comments.'

2. RHM#40, an Ideale 80 frame, black, no bag loops. The width is a little
under 6/ I reused all but one of the original rivets, which are stamped
IDEALE. The skirt stamps are imitations of Ideale stamps, but says 'remade
in New Jersey and have my initials where you would expect to find T, B,
and 80. $120 shipped.

3. RHM#49, a Brooks Pro frame, about 6 wide. Copper rivets. Skirt stamps
show Zeus and Herakles based on ancient Greek coins. $120 shipped.

4. RHM#46, a Brooks Pro frame, about 6 wide. Brass rivets. Skirt stamps
based on an ancient Carthaginian coin. $120 shipped.
This one is made from a premium butt leather; more expensive, easier to
work with, but thinner and softer. I have only ridden a few hundred miles
on one saddle made from this leather, and I'd say so far, so good! but
honestly I am not sure how it will hold up over the long haul.

[RBW] Re: Exceptional Rainwear

2013-07-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
Good luck, Larry. In my experience, if it requires ventilation zips it's
not breathable enough and if it requires a coating or laminate, it will
wear off and you have a wind jacket at best. In terms of cost, I fully
expect this jacket to last 30 years or more and still work as well then as
it does now (it does not use coatings, only the inherent properties of the
fabrics. Double ventile jackets are still around and working after 40+
years), so at roughly $400, that's $13.34 per year.

In short, wow. Just did 3 days bikepacking on Pikes Peak with rain about
half the time, and some of that was solid deluge. I stayed dry, no matter
what I was doing (we stopped short of snorkeling the marshes though). No
wet from inside sweat while climbing steep hills, no wet from the rain.
Amazing, incredible stuff. Yes, this is a a lot of praise for three days of
rain, but I know how well ventile wears so longevity should not be an
issue, and the fur liner is the possible wear point. They've only been
around for 15 years, so none knows how long they will last. Grin.

I got the Cansip breeches and Liathach smock.
 http://www.hilltrek.co.uk/acatalog/Liathach-Cotton-Analogy-Extreme-Smock-.html.

The Liathach (as you can see from photos below), fonts amazing well, allows
complete freedom of movement, unzips at the sides for complete range of
motion on the bike while still having greater coverage font and rear. The
fur analogy never felt wet on the inside. The only moisture I felt was
the moments it took my sweat to move from my skin to my wool long sleeve
shirt, maybe five minutes paused at the top of a hill, no more sweat, and
that's with it raining significantly the whole time. Said wool shirt, dry
within minutes at the car. Never felt the need to take it off due to
 cold/wet wool feeling.

Amazing stuff. Well worth considering carrying. I would highly recommend
the cotton analogy over double ventile -- the active pushing of moisture
out of the garment is stunning and effective.

All previous rainwear I've had would be lucky to be half this good.
Amazing. I'm looking forward to abusing them even more on the Colorado
Trail Pictures are in the camping album, if you missed seeing that. Here's

Definitely the high latitude makes a big difference. I've read a couple of
good books about Denali (hey, we can all dream!). Some climbers who have
climbed the Himalayas, Alps, and Andes will look at the relatively low
elevation and wind up underestimating the extreme challenges climbing so
far north present.

[RBW] Re: Need shoe recommendations for riding.

5.10 Dirtbags. I bought a pair a month ago and have been pleasantly
suprised at how good they are. I too ride MKS touring pedals with clips and
straps and these are the best shoes I've tried to date.

My regular, every day shoes are great on commutes, but feel a little soft
on standing climbs, and sometimes my toes get squished as they get jammed
in the front of the shoe.

I can put up with it for the short rides, but I think it would get on me
 nerves on longer rides.

 Any tips are welcome.

 been a pleasure.

I'm not a talented photographer, and the bicycle does look lovelier in
the steel. This is my first Rivendell and it absolutely rides like a dream
 - the stories are all true. I took it on its maiden voyage today and 20km
later was walking through the front door thinking I really must buy an
 Atlantis as well.

I've set it up for Randonneur riding and light-weight touring. It will
comfortably handle true 35mm tires with the fenders, so I think it offers
lots of versatility. I have it as an 8 speed (12-28) to the XD triple
(28/38/48) and that seems to be a good fit for this bike.

It's my first ground-up build. The headset was already pressed in, but I
built the wheels myself for this bicycle (first time) and assembled
everything either in my living-room or when I needed to at the local
bicycle co-op. It's taken me a few months as I was working too much, but
it's good to finish the build finally. I kept the build cost as low as
possible, using second-hand or using parts I already owned where I could.
There are also quite a few new parts and I haven't compromised on quality.
Overall, I'm very happy with the way it has turned out.

[RBW] FS: Two Burley trailers for the price of one. Burley Solo/Cargo

2013-07-18 Thread William
When my son was born I bought a Burley Solo. At that time I had done a
fair amount of touring with a cargo trailer and liked it a lot, so I also
sprung for the Burley conversion kit that converts my Burley Solo to a
Cargo Trailer. I used it as a kid trailer a fair amount, maybe once a week
in the summers. My daughter arrived a couple years later and we still used
it maybe 15x a year for short putts around town. Now it has been sitting.
Both kids are way too big, and I now carry all my luggage for S24Os and
touring on Nitto Racks and matching bags.

So, I admit I do not need my Burley trailer any more. So, before I go the
ebay route, I'm offering it here. It's a Burley Solo purchased in 2001.
It's in very good used condition, and has always been stored in the
garage. It fits one child, up to 50lbs, and it has a space behind the kid
for play gear or a bag of groceries. It comes with an optional conversion
kit to make it into a cargo trailer. I'd like to get $200 plus shipping.
I am in the East Bay. Local exchange is preferred, but not mandatory. I
just hate how much it costs to ship things.

Anyone who is interested contact me offlist and I can share copious photos
and answer any questions.

Last July I toured from the San Juans south as far as Corvallis, OR, along
the west side of Puget sound. No rain in nearly 3 weeks of riding. A
couple of years before that our family toured the San Juans for a week with
only minor drizzle one day on San Juan. Earlier a group of us followed
Bicycling the Pacific Coast's coastal route from the San Juans to Florence,
OR. Minor drizzle one day on the Oregon coast but 100 degree temps in
northern WA. All of these during July-August.

OTH, I've done the Oregon Bike Ride when it rained every other day, and not
always along the coast. Summer seems fairly safe but don't be surprised by
the odd storm. Less fun than riding in the rain is camping in the rain. I
live in southern CA so tend to overreact to rain.

 It
wasn't a downpour and it wasn't that cold, but it certainly didn't feel
like summer. I think Fenders would be worth it even if you just get a

I would just say that each person passing on (or getting rid of) a Quickbeam or

instead I spent the time I needed getting the right set up on it and now I know

2013-07-18 Thread Michael
Pauls have about 2k on them based on what original Bleriot owner and I have
put on them to the best of my recollection.

They have newish (less than 500 miles?) Salmon Kool Stop pads on them which
are great in the rain. Comes with 2 straddle wire hangers, seat tube
hanger, brake bolts - Allen, an extra straddle wire, and the original black
Kool Stops.

I will sell them for 95$ if you just want to buy them outright.
To be honest I'd rather sell, then I can just buy new Tektros.
Let me know what you think.

Paypal is great.

[RBW] Re: WTT/S: Paul Centerpulls for Tektro R559 sidepulls

2013-07-18 Thread Michael

PS- I am selling/trading the centerpulls because they are not going to
work with my new lower drop bar setup on my Bleriot which I must do to
avoid low back pain. I can have bars below saddle height or sit bolt
upright, but the in between heights don't wok for me.

So with bars at1cm below saddle height, the headset brake cable hanger is
too high for the cable to pass under the bars and over to the hanger
without bending the cable too much.

So on to sidepulls.

[RBW] Re: Century ride training for the un-racer?

2013-07-18 Thread Jon Doyle
Assuming you're in decent physical condition, I'd say don't give much
thought to training. If you're commuting, you've got the legs for a flat
100mi. Make sure you are comfortable for a long day on the bike. Regularly
consuming food and water will be key, too.

I did my first century with minimal cycling experience, mediocre
20-something's fitness, a fixed gear bike, and rolling terrain. I was
extremely ignorant; didn't know how to fix flats and bonking was a new
concept. I stuck with some other slowpokes and had a great ride. We were
probably the last to finish, but I was the happiest rider.

You might be surprised with the capabilities of under trained riders.
Many of the ones I know get strong by just riding frequently, to work or
running errands.

Do you get by on centuries with little to no training - just your commutes
 and such?

I am under the impression that those training cards you get at the LBS are
overkill and geared mostly to people racing or looking to do their personal
 best.

 Or am I sorely mistaken?

A friend of mine at work decided to try bike commuting and got himself a
29er hardtail with 2.1 aggressive knobby tsire for that purpose.
Now he wants to try something more road-like. Any reason he can't use a

Just for laughs, I will mention that he flatted both tires today and came

the knock-off slime tubes he just bought. He had a glass fragment inside
the front tire and a staple in the rear. Yipes.

that dealing with the people on this list has been a pleasure.

I'm not a talented photographer, and the bicycle does look lovelier in

I kept the build cost as low as possible, either buying
second-hand or using parts I already owned. There are quite a few new
parts and I haven't compromised on quality. Overall, I'm very happy with
the way it has turned out.

*claps hands with glee* Thanks for showing these. I know Betty is so much
more than a cute city bike, so I really enjoy seeing photos of people using
her for other types of adventures. Thanks, Smitty!

[RBW] Re: skinny tires OK on a mountain bike?

2013-07-18 Thread dougP
Jay:

I've run 1.25 (32 mm) wide x 26 tires on my old MTB. It worked fine,
maybe a little more responsive (or twitchy, depending on your viewpoint)
than with the honkin' knobs it came with. Worth a shot before springing
for a dedicated street / commuter tire. Not sure about a 29er but my old
26er feels more stable with 1.75-2 street tires.

pair of 32mm Pasela TGs I have taking up room in my closet?

Just for laughs, I will mention that he flatted both tires today and came
to me for help. He was pretty upset that such a thing could happen despite
the knock-off slime tubes he just bought. He had a glass fragment inside
the front tire and a staple in the rear. Yipes.

[RBW] Re: skinny tires OK on a mountain bike?

2013-07-18 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I did actually did the same thing myself for years on a 26 (steel)
hardtail.

I've got that bike stashed in my in-laws' basement in New Hampshire, where
I'm going next week. It's got 32mm SMPs on it at the moments and I'm
planning on riding the s**t out of it.

Not sure why I thought 29' might be any different. Maybe the garish colors.
