TOPIC DRIFT ALERT: Generally it's best to sell things on the forum as a separate topic however, but I'd like to sell a Nitto Top rack r-14, or trade it for a rack (like a tubus cosmos) that would allow for rear panniers. I'd prefer to not ship it which is why I'm offering it here, and I thought I'd ask you guys first. I'd like to sell it for agood price because I am the second owner, but only used it for a few months. does $80 seem reasonable? sincerely, Evan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Evan, Sorry I only have my Cosmo and likely will purchase another. May I suggest you post it both on CL the list-serve then I will direct you to a web seller that's reasonable price wise. That is if you can't find a trade. On the group make sure to post as FS/WTT Nitto R-14 rack for Tubus Cosmo rack and select the transaction tab. Of course if you already know all this then disregard. [RBW] 20,000 miles of Rivendells
While updating the little log I keep of my rides, I noticed that I am over 20,000 miles now on Rivendell bikes. I enjoy keeping the data and observing statistics about my rides over time. Like many, I got back into cycling later in life, realizing I needed a good way to get exercise. A bike was a self-bribe to sweat. Also like others, I went through a variety of bikes before figuring out what kind of bike suits me best. I got my first Rivendell, a new Ram in Jan 2007. Later that summer came a used Saluki and the next year, a pre-production '95 Road frame set that I built up. Some oberservations about the bikes: Of the Rivendell miles, a hair over 10K are on the Ram. The factory Arraya rims are still dead true (although the welded seam can be annoying when I brake in humid conditions). I re packed the Shimano 105 hubs at about 7K miles. Replaced the cassette at 9K (factory was a 9 speed Ultegra. I now have a wider range 8 speed and like it). Chains of course, more often. Original bars, shifters, deraillers, brakes all still work jam up. It's just to the point that I am thinking about re painting. A little sweat induced rust here and there, and a few dings from use. Do I stay with French Blue or get that Brandywine Red I've lusted after ever since seeing that Saluki on Cyclofiend. You know the one :) It's been a great bike, and trouble free. The other 10K miles are split evenly between the Saluki and the Road. I like the Road better, and it is getting more and more use, but the Saluki just has a certain feel to it that makes me keep it around. The road is quicker, the Saluki has a more comfortable long ride position for me. I ride it on RUSA events here and there, did a self supported tour on it, take it out on Sunday afternoon relaxer (and beginner intro) rides. The Road feels quick and handles quick. I have a 54.5 frame which is huge for me, but a 650B conversion makes it work. It also makes for a very nice hands-in-drops descending position. Do I like all of RBWs ideas and quirky approaches? Nope. But I do like the bikes. I think to myself, This is the most comfortable bike I've ever been on until I get on one of the others. I do like pedaling un clipped, and fatter tires at lower pressures, and wool, and no chamois pads. Is there a ripple effect? Well, only two other locals have bought Rivs (a Hillborne and a Foy) since seeing mine, but there is a population spurt on leather saddles, wool socks and higher handlebars (Delta stem risers for those who cannot quill) with my local circle. It's nice when someone comments on how comfortable they are. I'm all set I think for bikes now. Hope the next 10K miles are just as enjoyable. [RBW] Re: Greetings! - 64cm Atlantis?
I actually didn't know I'd be doing this much singletrack or that I'd even be able to ride single track except the gentle stuff. I talked with Grant and described the types of riding I wanted to do despite brain injury and constant neurological vertigo since 2002. Essentially I said I want to ride everything and be able to tour doing it, oh, and I want this to be the last bike I buy my entire life (I'm early 40's now). Grant said Hunqapillar. I'd talk with Grant and share what you want to do. I suspect the off pavement touring and possible single track touring is what had Grant steer me to the Hunqapillar over the Atlantis (plus price and availability too). Ah I see, so you already had the BM taillight on hand. Did the taillight come with enough wiring to route all the way down the frame and fender, or did you have to buy any extension? I know you mentioned using the Supernova quick disconnects... I was thinking of doing the same, because I have SS couplers. (Might as well make everything breakable in half, right? I removed the existing light's internals, sawed the Supernova tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing, ran the wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the light the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I surrounded the light w/ silicone to take up some dead space and to help adhere the light as well. Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and down the fender stay. [RBW] Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
I was hoping to find a previous thread on this topic, but I cannot seem to find it here. I currently have Honjo hammered fenders on my custom riv, but the front fender is so long and the aluminum is so fragile that it doesn't allow me to hop up and down curbs without having the whole thing get bent out of shape. I was hoping to move onto something more durable, and am contemplating between SKS Chromoplastic (26 P55) and Gilles Berthoud fenders (26 50mm). I am thinking the former would be a good option to improve the practicality, tone down the showyness, and reduce the chance of theft (although I live in one of the safest cities in the world -- Zurich, not sure if this should be a legitimate concern); however, the latter just seems to be a nice and durable option for a 'high end' bike. Also, I am not very mechanically inclined, so that is also another consideration. I would have an LBS install this, but if something happens in the middle of nowhere, I would think the SKS would be easier to pop into place. I purchased this bike new a couple of months ago. I have another Hilsen and was planning on using this one for a road bike with light weight parts. I have since gone another way and have this bike for sale nowSome parts I added and they are slightly used (wheel set has about 500 miles on it, handlebars are from another bike and fenders are from my other hilsen). Re: [RBW] Re: Gotham Cargo Crate

My bike is not a Riv so handling might be different for those on Riv's, but barely noticeable until it hits 15 pounds and more. With the weight I carry I can ride no hands with no ill effect on the steering. To the OP, I saw your photos with the Wald but as someone else already said, having the weight lower would help tremendously. As much as I like the crates, I would be concerned with total weight of the bike. All the metal ones are pretty darn long. Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
I have the longboards on my Hilsen, with sheldon fender nuts, which rotate the fenders to make them even lower, and I have to say, the rubber flap might bend, but I go up and down curbs all the time. One tip--I lift up a bit on the handlebar before descending the curb, essentially jumping down, which gives the bike a chance to make some forward movement before falling. If you roll right off of a high enough curb, you stand the risk of the fenders striking the top of the curb as you descend, especially at *low* speeds. I've had it happen. Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
I agree with Christopher. The other thing I found with a long front fender is I can't put the bike on my Yakima Roof Rack. With the front wheel off the fender hits the car-roof before the fork tips reach. So with my longboard bike, I just don't plan on putting it on the roof. For my Honjo bike, I redrilled holes with the fender rotated far enough forward that it clears, and I'll take up the extra space with a home-made flap to save my feet from spray On Tuesday, August 6, 2013 5:12:57 PM UTC-7, Christopher Chen wrote: If you roll right off of a high enough curb, you stand the risk of the fenders striking the top of the curb as you descend, especially at *low* speeds. I know there's clearance for 40 mm tires on the Hillborne but don't know if that is with/without fenders. 2. Anybody ever put 650B wheels on a 56 Sam? Looking on the Riv website at the page for the Betty Foy, it says that the Betty and the Sam can take the same volume tires. The Betty mostly uses 650B wheels. As of now I'm planning on 700c wheels, but am intrigued with 650B. Thoughts? Thanks, Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
A slightly different use case... one thing that's kept me away from aluminum and even stainless steel fenders is my need to move my bike(s) up and down elevators every day. Ahhh. City living. Not all elevators are sized for convenient bike transport, so fenders sometimes get banged around and squished. Plastic fenders spring back, but what would happen to metal fenders? I was hoping to move onto something more durable, and am contemplating between SKS Chromoplastic (26 P55) and Gilles Berthoud fenders (26 50mm). I am thinking the former would be a good option to improve the practicality, tone down the showyness, and reduce the chance of theft (although I live in one of the safest cities in the world -- Zurich, not sure if this should be a legitimate concern); however, the latter just seems to be a nice and durable option for a 'high end' bike. [RBW] FS: Rivendell Rambouillet 50cm
Hello All, 50cm Rivendell Ram for sale. It is from the stock blue and we are the original owners. It is in brand new condition and was ridden less than 30 miles- grad school, baby, and another on the way means it just never got ridden. Always stored inside. Everything is stock as it came from Rivendell with pink bar tape and interrupter levers added. No pedals or saddle. There is a small discoloration on the cream head tube that is only obvious if you look for it. It came this way and it is just a variation in the paint color. I would like to get $2300 for it and that includes professional packing and shipping. I am in Bismarck, North Dakota and would be willing to drive as far as Fargo for a local sale. I figure $2100 for a local sale? Email for pictures or with questions. Will consider any reasonable offers. Would like to see this bike ridden and not sitting in my garage. Cheers! Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
Thanks, all for your considerations. I see many of you are recommending the SKS longboard model, but I've already tried thesehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/sumehra/5556633615/in/set-72157626217977955 It is very difficult to fit a fender made for 700c wheels fit onto a 26 wheel, and it's 45mm width is probably also too narrow for my 26x1.5 tires. I also had trouble with the length of the front longboard fender hitting the curb, and the fender popping out of the 'socket' (which, in retrospect, is preferred to the alternate option of bending an Al fender out of shape). This is why, for SKS fenders, I am specifically, only considering the silver P55 of the chromoplastic model. The more I read your comments, the more I am inclined towards going for the SKS, just... the Gilles Berthoud's are so pretty! If I go with the GB, it will be the 50mm short variety. Not sure what short entails, but after having two sets of too-long fenders, I'm opting for short + mudflap if necessary. On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 1:04:12 AM UTC+2, Christopher Chen wrote: I have the longboards on my Hilsen, with sheldon fender nuts, which rotate the fenders to make them even lower, and I have to say, the rubber flap might bend, but I go up and down curbs all the time. Re: [RBW] Re: Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders
Hmm... that is a good idea regarding redrilling the holes on the Honjos, and rotating them further forward! I was thinking about maybe cutting the fender, but never even considered this option that seems much cleaner. On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 2:19:44 AM UTC+2, William wrote: I agree with Christopher. [RBW] WTT - 64cm Atlantis
I've got a Toyo-built 64cm Atlantis (#168), it's in good shape overall but does show signs of use, chain-suck scars and dark spots mid-fork where p-clamps held a front rack for a long time. Ultegra headset, unknown bottom bracket included... I'm going to go ahead and start building this puppy up, because I think it'll work for me. But on the off chance someone out there with an Atlantis or possibly a Hunq in the 60-62cm sizes wanted to trade for the next size up I figured I would throw it out there. I'm located in the Washington DC area, mid-atlantic would be preferrable for an in person exchange but I'd be willing to discuss otherwise. Re: [RBW] WTT - 64cm Atlantis
Tony, Careful. If you're worried the 64 cm Atlantis will be too big, the 62 cm Hunq will feel even bigger. This is because the Hunq's top tube slopes up 6 degrees, while the Atlantis's slopes up 2.5 degrees. Every degree translates to 1 cm of handlebar height. For me, the 62 Hunq fits like a theoretical 65.5 cm Atlantis, handlebar heightwise. Also, 62 cm Hunq's top tube is quite long, longer than 64 cm Atlantis. Simply put, my 62 Hunq is a larger bike than my 64 Atlantis. High bars are unavoidable. But it's cool that on this big Hunq I have a little more stand over clearance, as a result of the big upslope angle and it's shortened seat tube. If you're trying to go down 1 size, you want 61 cm Atlantis or 58 cm Hunqapillar. -Jim W. Jim - Thanks for the info I think you are right. I threw in the Hunq possibility without really understanding the differences that would change the fit geometry... definitely looking to reduce the standover height by a smidge if possible.
