Re: [RBW] Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar

2013-08-08 Thread Brian Hanson
Started with Moustaches. (good - too much reach)
Went to Porteurs. (better - wrapped with the wrong tape color, and got
antsy...)
Next up, Noodles. (best - but felt just like my Homer)
Now using Albas (tied for great with Noodles, but I am still a bit miffed
that they swoop up - bending my hands at an odd angle when I'm in the
forward position)
Next up - may go back to Porteurs or Boscos (like on a another bike)

[RBW] Post Courage Classic Pictures

2013-08-08 Thread Benedikt
I loaded up my Sam and rode it on the Courage Classic again.
Pictures to prove it! -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/neutralbuoyancy/sets/72157634961282335/
This year I even took my saddle bags and my digital SLR camera. This
brought the weight up to 47 pounds with empty water bottles. And actually
it wasn't that bad. I even passed some carbon peeps.

The Courage Classic is a three day/170 mile ride right here in the
Washington Cascades. Each day climbs over a mountain pass. The Sam was a
huge hit. There was a small crowd formed around it many times taking
pictures and asking questions.

To the one person in the RBW Owners Brunch who made a donation thank you
again. If anyone else wants to donate here's the link to my fundraising
page. There's still time.
http://www.courageclassic.kintera.org/Brian_Pickart
With your donation you're helping to stop the cycle of child abuse and
neglect . 100% of your donation goes directly to the charity. The web page
makes it appear that $25 dollars is the least you can give however ANY
amount can be entered in the box. $5, $10, $15, $20 dollars all gladly
accepted. Skip out on your morning latte. Feel good about helping kids and
a friend reach his fundraising goal!

This reminds me of when I made snow tires with machine screws through the
knobs on my old mtb tires. Wouldn't it be really great if folks just
demanded large supple smooth road tires so we don't have to go to these
extremes? Oh wait - the Compass 26" 2.0s are exactly that. I love mine,
BTW - awesome ride - probably made my older Miyata with Bosco's a favorite
bike. Now if I could just lower the bottom bracket...

Stick it out, Tom. This group is a wealth of knowledge, freely shared by a

[RBW] Re: Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar

2013-08-08 Thread shawn m.
I gnashed my teeth a bit before I finally committed to the Albatross bars.
I'd always had drops on my road bikes in the past, and I was a little
worried that I'd be giving up too much in the way of hand positions. Now, I
can't imagine ever riding with drops again. I LOVE my Albas. It was a real
revelation. I really like upright riding; I can see better, breathe better,
and my lower back and neck are much happier. I use my 54cm Hunqapillar for
everything: joy riding, grocery runs, camping, and even touring and I've
never once wished I had more hand positions. The hooks are super
comfortable for stretching out on the bike, climbing out of the saddle,
getting out of a headwind a bit. I will unabashedly evangelize Albatross
bars to anyone who will listen, and many who won't. I don't think you'll
regret it. The Bosco looks to be a great bar as well, and probably my next
bar, for all of the same reasons. Very comfortable, and they look great on
any Riv.

I rode trails with Albas, and they work really well. The Boscos look
like an improvement on them. I'd give either one of those a try first.
Then put some drops on the Sam for variation.

[RBW] Stolen Royal H Mixte Ventura

2013-08-08 Thread Pammie
Hi all,

I love reading this forum and have a similar type of hand built bike - a
Royal H Mixte with custom Peter White Son Dynamo wheelset. . . . It was
stolen out of the garage this week while I was in DC. My partner thinks it
could be that left the garage door open for just a few hours before going
to bed one evening but it would not have been long. When I arrived home, I
immediately saw it gone. . .

If anyone come across it please let me know -- Ventura Police Department
has also been notified, and I have notified all the bike shops! It's
really one of a kind. . . I'm sick about it.

I bought the frame from bike blogger Lovely Bike a year ago and have used
it for rides of 30+ miles. We have kept it in the house off and on -- but
live in a very safe neighborhood. I've never had a bike stolen as an adult.
I also have a new Acorn bag on the front. S

The police believe it is carnies -- we have a park and ride about 4 blocks
from the house and the fair is in town and we are, apparently, in the
middle of a crime spree. I do have insurance but I am still heartbroken.

My build (although I have cream delta cruisers on it now):

Here the frame on the builder site:

Thanks for looking! And thanks for all the nice compliments on the others
I've been moving out. I know this is mostly a steel/leather group, which I
am too (mostly). But it's worth a look-see for anyone looking for a go-fast

[RBW] Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders

2013-08-08 Thread LBleriot
I have Berhouds on my Bleriot, and can say that they look sharp and are very
durable. They are, however, a bear to fit and adjust. I have SKS fenders on
my San Marcos. I find them them to be lighter and a doddle to fit. They are
not as rigid, of course, and tend vibrate a bit. Both sets provide good
coverage. Berthouds are an investment both in time to fit and cost.

[RBW] Re: Friction Brifter?

2013-08-08 Thread IanA
Have to agree that stem shifters are super convenient and can be had for
small sums of money. Old Suntour or Shimano with long levers work well and
you can change gear for front or rear with either hand. This is a low cost
and excellent option, if the Kelly's or Retroshift weren't more your style.

[RBW] Gilles Berthoud stainless steel vs SKS Chromoplastic fenders

2013-08-08 Thread Jonathan Shinefeld
I run bikes with both. Both are flapped. Berthouds are sturdier, longer and
offer better coverage in the wet but no QR. SKS are cheaper, work fine, have
quick releases. If they do catch on something. I can't imagine Berthoud stays
coming loose without much trauma. (See recent Blug post). I think the key to
durability is is mounting fenders sans tension. A nice single malt helps.

Re: [RBW] Re: Calling all SoCal Rivsters S240 August 23rd anyone? See details below.

2013-08-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Rivendell Hugh,

I have a lot going on the 23th due to work, but I am committed to getting
there and camping with you folks. I want to see all of you you and see
your bikes. Whether I ride from Del Mar or do some combination of
contingencies (train + bike) I will get there. I've figured out several
Amtrak options. Even if it's after dark. Do you still have some space for
me, a Samuel Hillborne, and modest tent space? I do regret that I cannot
commit to getting up to starting from Irvine for the full S24O from the
transit station or Doug's in the timeframe (have lighting, and can deal
with dark if I do it later).

I may opt with Doug and either bring take out or ride out for comeda. I
don't want to take all the cook gear. OTOH, once I've got there, I have a
largish Sackville, saddle bag and can do carrier service back into
civilization for supplies and any liquid refreshment that might be required
to ensure restful sleep.

I might opt to ride back South with any San Diegans or those who would like
to extend their ride and visit our county. Let me know. I ride slow.
 un-racer.

Do you have a reservation and how do I specify the campsite when I get
there?. What did this cost you to reserve? May I contribute?

I am a short timer in this group, but I have seen such passion about these
bikes and the people here that I feel compelled to meet all of you that
turn out.

Heck yes, I am bringing camera and iPhone (gotta prove that it happened to
wife). Perhaps we should create a "proof that it happened" clump on flickr
and post so other folks can enjoy.

Thank you,

Tom

[RBW] Frame trivia; Squeezed chainstays and double-tapered seatstays; Ram v. AHH

Years ago the Ram was touted as having beautifully squeezed chainstays (to
clear fatter tires and the big chainring) and custom made double-tapered
seatstays (in 3 different lengths).
Did these features make it over to the AHH design? What say ye, AHH owners?

[RBW] Potential Sale of my 56cm Sam Hillborne

2013-08-08 Thread Larry H
Rivendell has been running a few frame specials recently and I'm
potentially picking up a 54cm Hunq. I don't think I can really afford to
build up another bike so I'm thinking of taking parts of my Sam Hillborne
and selling that frame.

Is there anyone interested in a Sam that is about 1 year old? It is the
blue version with twin top tube. Fairly light use with less than 1000
miles total. A few light scratches. I would sell it with the headset,
bottom bracket, Tektro sidepulls, Kalloy seat post. I can add a single leg
kickstand, Microshift front derailer, and cream longboard fenders to the
sale. Possibly include the 40mm Schwalbe Dureme tires as I would go wider
on the Hunq.

I will consider offers but I'm looking to get around $1,000.

For instance: By calling RBW you can learn the size your seat tube is
supposed to be and how to measure it, which isn't available on a geometry
chart online yet because I believe this 55 is a new size. Then you can
measure it for fun and see for yourself if they sent you the correct size

I am sure they sent you the right size, though.

Supernova tail light wire was not long enough. I did the slpice near the
rear of the bike and hid it behind the non-drive side chainstay, attached
with zip ties. I mounted my quick disconnect on the front rack, it was the

[RBW] Re: La Ruta Loquitica (The A Little Bit Crazy Ride)

2013-08-08 Thread Tom Virgil
What a great bike camping "adventure" narrative. I have bike camped before
but am going on my first S24O with Riv oriented folks on the 23th (San
Mateo Campground). I am looking forward to the experience. I hope this
bunch likes "various cheese, bread, sausage, fabulous pastry" and
"spirituous beverages". I "rode" my route using Google Maps Street view
and have a plan for points of interest where I might do "provisioning" of
such "comida" and liquid refreshment. Have to see what room is left in the
Sackville bags, but I will find a way.

You and your fellow riders rock.

[RBW] Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar

2013-08-08 Thread Ozonation
I'm trying decide on *Albatross - or other -* bar for my Hunqapillar

I currently have Sam Hillborne with moustache bars and it's great, but
would not mind some more hand positions. I was very intrigued by the Salsa
Fargo and its woodchipper drop bars. I do not plan on doing excessively
long tours - mostly day long trips of several hours at a time. I was
thinking of trying *drop bars* on the Hunqapillar.

However, when I ride with my wife, she prefers a more leisurely ride, and
this is where the moustache bars I found a bit less comfortable because I
just really want to go faster. So, I was thinking of a more *MTB style or
Nitto Bullmoose bar* to be a bit more upright. If I take the bike on
rougher trails, I would think something like *Nitto Bullmoose* bars (more
MTB style) would be best.

I hadn't really consider the *Nitto Albatross *bars - how long are they for
longer distances and rougher trails? I have noticed that a lot of
Hunqapillar riders use the Albatross bars, and it has gotten a lot of good
reviews. And Rivendell even features a rider on mountain trails using what
looks like an Albatross bar on one of its videos!

Some swear by another one, the *Nitto Bosco Bullmoose *bar, which sort of
lends the above.

Any opinions on what handle bar best serves me in all situations?
Albatross? Other?

Thanks.

[RBW] FS: 56 cm Waterford Hillborne frameset, lots of Riv-related parts and bits

2013-08-08 Thread gordo
Hi all,

Grad school is starting in two weeks and I need to move some things to pay
for books. I'd really prefer to sell the Hillborne and Miyata framesets,
as well as the wheels locally (I'm in San Francisco). Everything else can
be shipped if need be - please add $5 to cover shipping (we can works
something out for multiple items). Pictures of most items can be found
here:
http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/gordo2231/library/grad%20school%20sale%20bike%20parts?page=1

The list:

1) 56 cm orange Rivendell Sam Hillborne frame/fork/headset/bottom
bracket/Kalloy seatpost. Built by Waterford (double top tube model with
cantilever posts). Paint has issues - lots of non-matching touch-up paint
and a few decent scratches provided by previous owner. The frame is
straight and dent/crack-free with about 2,500 miles on it. - $700

2) Brooks B67 Aged saddle (brown) with maybe 100 miles on it - $80

3) Rivendell Silver bar-end shifters - $50

4) Tektro R536 sidepull brakes with recessed mounts (appear to have been
mounted and barely used) - $30

5) Rivendell Silver sidepull brakes with recessed mounts - just checked and
the pads have plenty of life left - $60

6) Nitto Technomic 110 mm quill stem with 26 mm clamp - $35

7) daVinci shifter cable splitter set-up - new in bag - $25

8) Cockpit: Nitto technomic 90 mm stem with 26 mm clamp, 44 cm Nitto Noodle
handlebars, Silver bar-ends and Shimano Tiagra aero levers wrapped in very
well-used Toshi leather tape: $125 local sale or $140 shipped

9) Front wheel - SON dynamo hub (older style no longer made in 32-hole
configuration) laced to 700c Velocity Dyad 32-hole rim with rimtape and
locking skewer (handbuilt with very low mileage): $250

10) Front wheel - Shimano LX 36-hole front hub laced to 700c Velocity Dyad
rim with rim tape and Shimano quick-release skewer (handbuilt and very
lightly used): $75

Based on the Permatex descriptions and looking around online, 1A,1B, and
1C and their corresponding item numbers seem to mean tube sizes:
1A is like 1.5oz., 1B is 3oz, 1C is 11 oz. That's the only diffs I can
read and determine from what I have seen. If anyone knows better please
chime in.

Ha ha! Funny how when you take on a project that isn't in your line of
experience, you run into small stuff like this that wastes time trying to
figure out, and sometimes it doesn't amount to anything anyway. But you
have to get to the bottom of it just to be safe/sure. Wouldn't want to ruin
the new 30$ cork grips or have them fail because I used the wrong goo.

The people at Rivendell must chuckle at us and all our green-horn bike
talking and queries about projects we are doing (for those of us that are
green horns in bike mechanics like me).

But it is fun to learn. I can do a whole lot more on my bikes now than I
ever could before. Saves cash that woulda been paid to the LBS for labor.
Now I can use it to buy more stuff for the bikes. Ha ha!

Frames look small without the wheels and bars. Especially one without a top
tube. Pretty easy to measure and make sure though.

Hope you enjoy the build and the bike.

[RBW] FS: Grip Kings, MUSA Large pants, Power Grips pedal straps

2013-08-08 Thread Sean Cleary
Items are all in excellent, hardly used condition:

Grip Kings have "pedal spikes" installed (easily removed) and a few extra holes
for more. Grip is vastly improved, in fact, I removed half the spikes that I
originally installed, they work so well. $40.

Large butternut color pants have zipper pulls removed, they were too noisy.
Zipper works fine without. $50.

Power Grip pedal straps work extremely well and tan looks great on cream accent
Rivendell bikes. Argyle pattern shown is only on one side-I used the plain side
with no graphics.

All items include shipping to lower 48 states.

Well, the Betty Foy frame arrived today, and I'm absolutely thrilled about
completing the build. I'm looking forward to many great rides together.

There's just one thing: I've never actually paid attention to frame size
before, so when I took Betty out of her very well-packed box, I was a
little surprised by how small she is. I ordered the 55cm size as
recommended by Keven, but she looks so small without all of parts.

Is this normal? Should I measure her just to be sure?

[RBW] Re: Cork grips glue suggestions?

2013-08-08 Thread Sean Cleary
I didn't want to buy a tube of $10 adhesive just to secure a $20ish grip so I
checked what was on hand. Super strength double stick tape: too thick to get
grip on bar. Hot glue: stuck momentary but then broke free. Weather strip
adhesive: light layer sorta held so gooed on some more and wa-la! Still working
one month layer.

Michael,
I found great success with a HOT GLUE GUN. The trick is to squirt some hot
glue into the grip, then put it straight on to the handlebar. If you twist
the grip, the bond will be too weak. Once the glue dries, you will not be
able to twist the grip. This way, if you ever want to remove the cork
grips, or even use them on a different bike, you can.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Anomaly ?

2013-08-08 Thread RJM
I have a 48cm Sam, 650b wheels and feel the bike is very stable and does
really well going down hills, especially in the twisties. I noticed on my
ride yesterday, where I was pushing myself on the bike pretty hard and
coming to a section with quite a few twists in the road, at one point
I felt myself put countersteer into the handlebars to get the bike to turn
tightly on one of the turns. It was just more noticeable at that time and I
would say I conciously did it. This maybe due to the fact that it was a
really tight turn, I was riding pretty fast and my hands were in the drops.
I don't know, but I remember it being different from the other turns I went
through and I was thinking about what I had to do to get the bike to go
where I wanted it to.

I didn't have any bags or racks on the bike at that time, just a small tool
roll on the saddle. I ride on pari moto tires pumped up to 70lbs and am
using dyad rims.

I used to ride a Trek Madone and I remember the bike was quicker handling
and not as good when going downhill. The Sam is not as lively handling as
a race bike like the trek, but that kind of stability is what I really want
out of a Riv like the Sam.

bicycle spokes will not slice thru it. Catch a critter in your wheel & you

I've noticed that especially in springtime squirrels seem to play a game of
"how close to the bike can we get" that's a bit unnerving. One theory is
that they are young males out to prove themselves. The will sit up, on the

Ok do this.. or at least this is what I would do...

1. Move saddle forward on seat post or back...just make a change and
test - if still pain put it back
2. Raise / lower seat ...
3. Raise / lower bars

If none if the individual test help then make combo's .. 1 and 2 the 2 and
3 etc. Always returning to beginning.

When all the measuring and thinking don't work make a change... make it
worse make it better just change it ;0

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Anomaly ?

2013-08-08 Thread IPATOM
I think Joe Bernard is right. I too have a single TT Sam and it handles
more like a Mercedes sedan than a Porsche 911. The Sam is definitely not
twitchy but I like the feeling of stability I feel on fast descents with
the Sam compared to descents I do on my titanium road bike. I think this
type of handling is ideal for a versatile bike like the Sam.

[RBW] Re: Cork grips glue suggestions?

2013-08-08 Thread William
RoadieRyan

Was it possible you were trying to install 22.2mm grips onto 23.8mm bars?

Anyway, Michael

Riv cork grips are 22.2mm and Albatross bars are 22.2mm. I agree with Ryan
that you should do a dryfit first, but it should be easy. Mine slid on
effortlessly when dry-fitting them. Then I used a gaskety rubber material
to put them on, like Andy suggested. Days later I could still kind of
rotate them like motorcycle throttle. I didn't like that so I re-installed
them with Gorilla Glue. That stuck them in place, and I think I waited
overnight. Next time I had to get them off though, I couldn't. I had to
scrape them off and put on a new set when I was ready.

But I will say that compared to my race bike, my Bleriot and the Sam are
more stable riding and slower responding/handling bikes, which I like. They
are very predictable and smooth handling.

Unlike the twitchy and more unstable and unpredictable feeling race bike

If you are not familiar with riding Rivendells, it could be just the newer
stable type handling of the bikes compared to the twitchy, fast handling
of race bikes you may be used to.

[RBW] Re: Tire bead won't seat/will unseat around valve area?

I've had tires with a mold-error where the bead is just flattened, and
can't hook the rim properly. I got them warrantied. That doesn't mean
that's what you have going on, but it is possible. You'd easily be able to
see it and feel it if the bead is messed up at the area where it is

Re: [RBW] A few of my photos from (The A Little Bit Crazy Ride)

Underbiker Mark was absolutely amazing. How did he get up that rocky
trail without a pinch flat on those narrow tires? Seriously, that
trail is a pinch flat waiting to happen, for most people. It's the
perfect argument for wide tires, in three dimensions. Mark was clearly
a very skilled rider, as well as being strong.

[RBW] A few of my photos from (The A Little Bit Crazy Ride)

2013-08-08 Thread James Warren
It was one of the best ways to spend two days. The people were tremendous as
usual.

Caltrain was a good start, chatting with Anne. An eavesdropper would have
learned a bit about hobo touring, if they could follow a conversation full of
words like Nitto and Schwalbe 1.6 and Hoss bag. Like DougP down south, I learn
a lot from Anne's wealth of touring experience.

Michael was a distinctive presence in the distance at the Ferry Building,
looking every bit the classy tourist as I'm sure you see in the photos. Soon
Esteban arrived with his backpack that was apparently infinitely cavernous; how
did he get a tent and pad and sleeping bag in there? But he wasn't ready to go
without a baguette sticking out the top. The Ferry Building fixed that. That
baguette guided us to the campsite. When we saw Manny talking to Pedicab
co-workers before joining us, I was convinced that he was going to make a few
bucks and tote a few tourists along for the first mile or so of our tour. He
had plenty of rear space for a person to ride a rear rack, since he carries
EVERYTHING up front. Manny is the most frontloading US tourist I have seen.

By the way, http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/46035786@N07/sets/72157634988367622/

shows 9 photos.

The Ferry Building is the perfect place start a SF ride. You can start your
ride with great food.

I could tell the stars were aligning on the way to Mill Valley: youth bike
rally of some kind in Chrissy field graced by the presence of E's baguette,
Golden Gate Bridge in full view, two Atlanti in different colors, stop at
Sausalito Cyclery where a beautiful orange XO-1 rider zoomed by us. That had to
be an illusion we all shared, right? I mean the bike that inspired the Atlantis
appearing before a ride that would feature 4 Atlanti out of 7 and one
Hunqapillar (which was made to sort of replace Toyo Atlanti)!

So how could the stars get more aligned: Andy M appears in Mill Valley! My
friend and former So. CA native who, along with DougP, was my introduction to
the So Cal Riv group 4 years ago. His Atlantis is looking good, surviving fork
mishaps and still going strong. The orange fork is a sign of strength,
experience, and activity.

The photo's not super, but you can see the public bike tool box that sits on
Railroad Grade, with oil, tire repair stuff, a pump. Civilization!

Around this time, we met Gabe, the only rider I had not ridden with before.
This man knows every trail in CA north of Pismo and is great fun to talk to.

One of my photos shows evidence of more Bridgestone juju to come our way. This
very strong underbiker named Mark on a 1994 RB-1 rode up to West Point Inn,
which means he climbed most of rocky Railroad Grade with skinny tires and
classic (high) road bike gearing. It was impressive. He was pretty excited to
see us with our Rivs and overnight stuff. He was a Bridgestone catalog nut like
me, so we had some things to talk about, and Andy got involved and RB-1/7 vs.
RB1/8 came up at least once. I was in heaven.

Finally, we got to Pantoll campsite with many hours to spare, so there was lots
of time for high frivolity: Mike turning into the Hulk and shattering tree
limbs for firewood, Esteban mimicking with comic effect, a raccoon crawling on
our table since we left food out late, lots of fun conversation.

We said goodbye to Esteban at the campsite in the morning, he and I noting that
it's not summer unless we meet for a campout with little to no planning. Summer
almost didn't come this year, but then sure enough this ride materialized
proving that the laws of nature are intact.

The morning road to Muir Beach from Mount Tam was on a single track I had been
wanting to try, Coastal View Trail. Amazing. Then coffee, then we said goodbye
to Andy. The remaining 5 had lots of outstanding Headlands climbing, on Green
Gulch. Then Old Springs, then down Miwok, then tunnel.

After crossing the bridge, all went their separate ways with the exception of
Michael and I who got pizza and beer for lunch. Great decision.

I then stayed out. I rode down to Pacifica, got a cheap room, cleaned up,
rested, and planned Wednesday's ride. On Wednesday I rode down the coast with a
long detour climb on Old San Pedro Mountain Road, then lunch in Half Moon Bay.
Then I got back east via Purisma Creek Redwood Trail. Quite a day of riding.
After Purisma, Kings Mountain took me down from Skyline to Woodside, then I
hopped on the Redwood City Caltrain to bring me north to San Mateo where the
ride began for me 50-some hours earlier.

Practical note: if you are using a huge saddlebag for camping, like the Hoss,
or Sackville Large, with camping weight in it, the older Carradice Bagman is
insufficient support. Mine began to fail on the last day. It didn't break, but
I had to bend it back in shape and then use John's Irish Straps to pull the bag
to the seat and take weight off the Bagman. Good thing I brought those straps
or I would have had persistent problems with rac

I agree with those that say it is because of the design/geometry. I just read
an article (I forget where) about how certain bike designs affect how
responsive a bike is to turning using the handlebars vs your hips.

Subject: [RBW] La Ruta Loquitica (The A Little Bit Crazy Ride)

Every time I read about one of Manny's adventures, I think to myself, "Wow,
that's too hard for me, glad I didn't do that one." But Jim Warren asked if I
were going to ride this one, and then I wanted to reward myself for finishing
up some programs, so somehow on Monday morning, there I was at the Mountain
View train station, waiting to take the train to San Francisco and adventure.

You dudes with all that upper body strength don't have to worry about this, but
I was worried about even getting my loaded bike onto Caltrain. The bike cars
I'd been on in the past have four very steep steps you have to carry your bike
up. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do that. (For good reason, as I found
out the next day.) But, happily, the bike car that arrived was a different
sort, where the rider just had to lift the bike up one tiny step.

And, at nine in the morning, there were a whole bunch of cyclists waiting to do
just that. As there were also a whole bunch of cyclists already on the train,
embarking resembled a game of Bike Tetris, with bikes and riders crammed in the
aisles, and much shifting at each station. Fortunately the other cyclists were
patient with me and my difficulties maneuvering a bike loaded up with rear
panniers in the cramped quarters.

By the time we got to San Mateo where Jim Warren was to board the train, the
herd had thinned and he was able to find a space with no difficulties. Once in
San Francisco we went on to the Ferry Building and Pier 1 to meet up with the
famous Manny and the other riders. The Ferry Building is foodie heaven; we
stopped there for a bite to eat, and to get some provender for the ride. Manny
pooh-poohed the idea that we needed food, but was overruled. I had awoken early
to finish packing, ride to the train to take the hour and a half trip--
breakfast was a distant memory by that time.

We proceeded through San Francisco, over the bridge (which sucked, as
usual) and down through Sausalito, where we stopped at a bike shop.
Sadly, none of us could fit in the handsome wool tweed riding breeches that
were on sale-- perhaps no other riders could, either, and that's why they were
on sale.

We continued on to Mill Valley, for another stop, to meet another rider, for a
cheese and fruit snack and for purchase of more food, some to eat then, some to
bring, plus various beverages of an alcoholic nature. Manny pooh-poohed the
idea that we would need anything for breakfast, saying that we'd have a
downhill trip from our campsite to the Pelican Inn where we would be able to
have coffee. I like coffee at breakfast but I like breakfast food as well, so I
nevertheless brought food, as did others. When you read the description of the
next day's ride, you will notice that there were no places at all to get food.
So, if you are on a ride with Manny, it can't hurt to bring extra food, as
indeed he always does.

Now it was time to start the dirt... and the ride was pretty much all dirt from
then on, until we got back to the Bridge the next day. We started up the east
side of Old Railroad Grade. The trail was fire-road width, not too steep, but
the surface is sharp pointy rocks.
I was glad I had installed the Marathon 1.6 tires on the bike, but realized as
I jounced around on the rocks that 75 psi was way too much air. I kept letting
out more and more air.

On our way up, we met up with our last rider. Now we were seven, with four
Atlanti, Jim's Hunqa, a Hilsen and another fine non-Riv entrant.
Of our four Atlanti, three were the original green (mine is purple) but only
one of our forks was the original color: we had a kaleidoscope of green,
purple, orange and blue. Odd. (And I'm sure Manny will have pictures to prove
this.)

At West Point Inn, at the top, I was thinking that the climb would have been
iffy with narrow tires. But then, who should arrive at the top but a
fit-looking Bridgestone RB-3 (?) rider on narrow tires.
Clearly, this dude was a skilled rider to be able to navigate the rocky surface
without getting pinch flats. We all stood around for a while appreciating each
others' bikes, then descended to the campground.

The campground seemed oddly wet. Hmm... I didn't think it had rained, but our
campsite was muddy. Oh well. We set up camp, and stuffed ourselves with various
cheese, bread, sausage, fabulous pastry and other good stuff people brought.
And then it was dinner time, but having eaten all that other food, I didn't
feel like eating the sandwich I had lugged up there.

Manny made a little fire, expertly, as it began to get dark. There was much
talk around the fire, and drinking of the aforementioned spirituous b

2013-08-08 Thread Kieran J
Yeah, I guess thats what happened, even though I checked the bead before
inflating. It seemed to just push itself out.

Anyways, It was a 25 mm tire in both cases. I'm guessing the jack browns that
are due to arrive soon will be less prone to this behaviour. I've never
experienced the humping on fatter tires, including the Pasela 35s and the Nomad
32s.

I currently have Honjo hammered fenders on my custom riv, but the front
fender is so long and the aluminum is so fragile that it doesn't allow me
to hop up and down curbs without having the whole thing get bent out of
 shape.

I was hoping to move onto something more durable, and am contemplating
between SKS Chromoplastic (26" P55) and Gilles Berthoud fenders (26" 50mm).
I am thinking the former would be a good option to improve the
practicality, tone down the "showyness," and reduce the chance of theft
(although I live in one of the safest cities in the world -- Zurich, not
sure if this should be a legitimate concern); however, the latter just
seems to be a nice and durable option for a 'high end' bike.

Also, I am not very mechanically inclined, so that is also another
consideration. I would have an LBS install this, but if something happens
in the middle of nowhere, I would think the SKS would be easier to pop into
 place.

Re: [RBW] Re: First Riv in the wild

2013-08-08 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Riv-Spotting! Awesome idea... this might be a good 'sticky'!

I caught sight of a gorgeous tall iridescent blue riv, white/cream headtube
and the headbage was the Rivendell 'RBW' one the gentleman riding it
was headed east into DC on the W&OD trail near Falls Church, VA. Looked
like he was commuting and as I was out for a recreational ride the other
direction we didn't get to chat. I was also riding my grey Trek so it
wouldn't have been 'riv on riv' anyway.

Still, very cool!

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Anomaly ?

2013-08-08 Thread Ron Mc
Long-trail and short-trail seem to be opposite of the way they look, so
let's talk about offset. My Italian bike has a very small offset and
handles like a sports car. My old Raleigh has a large offset fork and I
have to force it through a turn, especially with a load on front. A fork
with less offset gives you more nimble handling, a fork with more offset
makes for steady go forward. Where you grip the bar affects the speed you
apply to turn the bar. Far forward on the hoods gives you a leverage
advantage, but really slow down the steering speed. Gripping as far back
on the bar as possible increases the turning speed. You can affect this by
the length of your stem.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Anomaly ?

2013-08-08 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm not smart about geometry and such, but I know every Riv I've ridden
(Rom, Ram, Saluki, Bleriot) had what motorcyclists used to know as "Italian
handling": Dead steady through a turn, which translates to you having to
kind of push it in, rather than having it fall quickly to one side or the
other. This handling trait is especially helpful for newer riders because
the bike doesn't react so quickly to every twitch and shift from their
bodies. To use a car comparison between my Bleriot and Bstone XO-1: The
Bleriot is a nice sedan to the XO's sports car. The XO feels more
maneuverable when doing point-and-shoot-style city biking, while the
Bleriot feels stable and smooth on long flowing descents.

Assuming there are no alignment issues with your Hillborne, you may simply
be experiencing an inherent stability built into Grant's design which
doesn't show up on your other bikes.
