[RBW] Re: SoCal Rivsters San Clemente S24O
The photos almost make me miss the southland. Geographic elitism aside, it looks like the trip was a raging success. There have been so many inspiring meet-ups this year. I imagine there'll be a few more before the weather turns (more for some, less for others... in regard to weather turning) and we retreat to our caves for the winter. In addition to the small local gatherings, I'm already looking forward to the 2014 Jamboree. Will be nice to meet more of you characters in person and share a few pedal revolutions. --Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Japan?
Hi Christopher Japan is a very beautiful country. I think you will enjoy the visit. Can you speak Japanese? I am a native speaker of Japanese, so I have no idea whether or not traveling in Japan is easy for nonnatives. Maybe someone in this list can give you advice about that. Rural areas are more pleasant to visit than urban areas (for cyclists, that is), but there is less chance to meet someone who speaks English in rural areas. I think I can give you some advice about eastern part of Japan. I seldom go to west Japan, so I don't know much about west. Do you have any idea when you will visit? I like the idea of a rando bag on a small nitto I think.. thanks all. Matches what I would do. If I am riding with only one rack, prefer front to back. [RBW] Re: Saddles - A Weighty Question
Cecily, I have spent a lot of time and experimentation trying to help my wife solve a chafing problem. Her single now has a Terry Fly and the tandem a B17. We've been through the up down routine and have settled on level. A switch to Albas has helped. But not all the problem turned out to be the saddle or adjustment. She was wearing Ibex women's specific shorts which have a pretty thick pad. When she switched to a pair of men's shorts with a very thin pad, things got better. Finally she started using organic coconut oil as a lubricant. That seems to have made a big difference, especially when we go for a long ride, like 3 hours. [RBW] Birthday riding in Glenwood Springs
My wife organized a fun little vacation to celebrate my birthday and the end of summer for my daughter. We packed up the car and headed into the hills destined for Glenwood Springs. I had been through it several times but aside from stopping for gas never spent any time there. We had plans for hiking, swimming, cave tours, alpine slides, and hot springs soaking. Stuck the bike on the car just in case ;) Fun was had by all and I got out on the bike all 4 days in some fashion. Awesome singletrack underbiking, spectacular canyon trails, steep never ending forest service roads, and tiny quaint mountain town side streets were the playgrounds. Re: [RBW] Re: Saddles - A Weighty Question
Cecily- I'm a large mammal; I weigh 210# now (was #260 a couple years ago) and I have no problems with my Brooks. I have a B17 Select on my gofast bike (Giordana XL-Eco) and a Brooks Flyer on my Rivendell Road Standard. I like the springs of the Flyer because I bounce on the saddle a lot when trying to pedal hard. I'm not easy on the saddles, but they've never complained, bent, or even really creaked. Tim On Mon, Aug 26, 2013 at 11:57 AM, Michael Hechmer mhech...@gmail.comwrote: Cecily, I have spent a lot of time and experimentation trying to help my wife solve a chafing problem. My concern is that because I'm a heavyweight rider, a saddle like the B17 won't stand up to my weight, and I'll damage the seat rails. Have any of you who are in excess of 220# had any issues with the B17 saddle? If you have other recommendations, I'm happy to entertain them. Thanks! Philip, Looking over your flickr photostream I think you are just the person to ask a few questions of. :) What was your experience like with the dingle (double singlespeed for the archives) setup? I am very curious about this setup option. How is the sizing on the quickbeam? Long? Tall? Short? Stout? I hope that question makes sense. I have owned both a Saluki and a Rambouillet and they fit a bit different from each other. How did you decide on the size you got? Any fender solutions that worked better than others? Re: [RBW] Re: quickbeam/S.O. questions
I have two Quickbeams and love them both. One lives here in Washington... http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrivers/sets/72157631759010530/ And the other in Cape Cod. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrivers/sets/72157618452191962/ Front basket, back basket, upright bars or noodles, I always smile when I ride this bike. I have run them fixed, free, and even rigged a three speed with a front and rear der before I bought my Ram. These are both 60 cm and fit a bit better than my 60 cm Ram. Because they are SS, the BB is higher on the QB. I ride a 61 cm AHH and have a PBH of 87.5 cm. I weigh 200 lbs and like 35-37 mm tires; fenders work well with this frame. Tis is a seriously fun bike! +1 on snow peak gigapower stove. I actually own 2 so I can lend one out. Great power and fairly adjustable, at around 4 ounces. And mine are not the Ti version. My other stove is a homemade Pepsi stove that's actually a Guiness stove (higher octane ;-) Combined with a Snowpeak ti pot and cup, it makes a super light and packable cook system. I used to use a MSR whisperlight, but these two options do everything I need, and packing alcohol or canisters is far easier than the white gas I used to use. I know your desire to not have more than one rack. I use a Mark's in front and R-14 in back. Mostly there is a Wald medium in front that carries a Shopsack, occasionally my Carradice Barley strapped onto the basket in front, or a rando bag without basket. The back usually sports an S'ville medium, but occasionally has the Carradice or smaller saddlebag. Lots of options, little discernible disadvantage to using 2 modest-sized racks, and the racks make for nice bling. Also get to make use of all the fork and seats that fittings. Good luck! Re: [RBW] Re: quickbeam/S.O. questions
Hey Jason, Dingle: Awesome incarnate. The only way to fly. I actually got kind of OCD about not moving the axle, since I was using big tires AND fenders. However, the real advantage is that it gives your Quickbeam 12 teeth of chainring difference instead of 8. I had a geared bike with the same overall range as my Quickbeam (it had a single ring and a tight range cassette). So, with a Dingle cog, you could have 6 usable(?) gears, from 42 to 80 inches, based on 32/44 rings, and a flip/flop 15 and 17/21. You'd be in the 44x17 90% of the time, with a 15 second change to the 32x21 42 gear. Long flat road rides with other guys, you could flip to the 44x15, and still have a quick change to a 58 climbing gear in the 32x15. This is predicated on a 38mm tire, which might not actually work with this range. A 32mm tire would almost certainly work, but lower each gear by about an inch. Or so. According to Sheldon's gear calculator. And some hand-waving. If I'd gotten into the Quickbeam's bottom bracket, cranks and rings to set that up, I think it would have worked for the Grin Fundo straight up Mt Diablo and straight down again. The Quickbeam would not have been an impediment to enjoyment. As long as I could re-borrow the Large Saddlesack. Man, that bag is awesome. Size: My saddleheight is 790mm, so my PBH is probably 90cm. Because I wanted to ride the QB offroad with the largest tires that would fit, John suggested the 60cm over the 62cm frame. I have a 63.5cm low-trail Ross touring bike, so I'm comfortable with big bikes, but the Quickbeam is ideal. Fit: I don't have other Rivendell bikes to compare it to, but the bike fits great. I did try three stems and two bars. The stock stem and Noodles were flexier feeling than I like (200# guy riding fixed offroad), and the Dirt Drop stem was too tall, but the old Salsa stem and WTB dirt drop bar combo has been amazingly fantastic. I have a backup silver Midge, and I'm happy with Midge, Woodchipper and Moustache bars on other bikes, but I hope the WTB bar outlasts me, because I never want to change it. Fenders: I've used SKS fenders, and VO Zeppelins. The SKS were easier to deal with, but the Zeppelins looked better. I painted them both to match the bike. The VO fender hardware was crap when I got the fenders about 5 years ago. The stays never seated very solidly into the mounts, which I guess could act as a slip-fit fender quick release if you picked up a stick, but mostly means I need to dick around with the fender after putting it into a car, or leaning it against a wall, or just whenever. Every modification I tried to do to make the fit tighter somehow made it worse. They look dynamite, though. http://www.biketinker.com/2012/fine-bikes/state-of-the-quickbeam-3-3-12/ If I wrote a new state of the Quickbeam post, it would show zero fenders. Track ends: Sheldon was wrong. For fat tires, removing a wheel with fenders mounted is easier with track ends than front-opening dropouts, because fat tires are large, and the crotch of your chainstays gets narrower and narrower the forwarder you go (which is what 'crotch' means). Having quick releases on the rear of my SKS fenders and crap (excuse me, conveniently loose) hardware on my VO fenders probably influences my idea of easier, since I can just pull the fender out of the way to drop the wheel. For the record, this is my only disagreement with anything Sheldon ever wrote. Now I feel inspired to set up a proper two-ring dingle again. I have owned both a Saluki and a Rambouillet and they fit a bit different from each other. How did you decide on the size you got? Any fender solutions that worked better than others?
